We got there on a weekday morning and waited about 30min to get a table, which wasn't bad considering the crowd outside when we got there.. We ordered the banana bread french toast and the buttermilk batter with bananas, blueberries, and chocolate chips. The fruit was fresh and the batter was a good, thick buttermilk. We had fun trying to draw different shapes and our 4yr old really loved it. He wanted to go back every morning for breakfast. Mind you the small pinch of bacon and peanut butter. The taste of the pancakes was decent but I'm not sure how you can really go wrong with pancakes, for $16 id expect a lot more. If you make your own pancakes it's $10 for a 8 oz bottle of batter (which only made 4 small pancakes) it's $3 or $4 for each topping you order and it's a small serving. The iced coffee was no good, I couldn't even drink half of it. My 2 year old liked it, though. I wouldn't return to this place if I visit Maui again. I've come to Slappy Cakes every year when I visit Hawaii, which makes this experience even more disappointing. For years, Slappy Cakes didn't serve specialty coffee, so before coming in we grabbed coffee across the street like we always have. We waited outside with our coffees until our table was ready. Only after we were called inside were we suddenly told we couldn't bring them in because they now sell specialty coffee. That isn't customer service--it's a great way to alienate loyal customers. If you've recently changed your menu, tell people. A simple, "We recently started serving specialty coffee, so we'd appreciate it if you purchased it here next time," would have taken 10 seconds and left everyone happy. Instead, we were forced to choose between throwing away nearly $50 worth of coffee or leaving after patiently waiting for our table to be ready. I've supported this restaurant for years, and this is how returning customers are treated? Policies are one thing, but good customer service is about using common sense. Calling us in while we're holding our coffees and then telling us to get rid of them is unnecessarily rude and completely avoidable. This wasn't about coffee--it was about how customers are treated. Unfortunately, that's what I'll remember most from this visit. EDIT: We were a party of seven with two kids. Instead of all of us ordering breakfast, we decided to just get batter for the kids and skipped coffees and meals for all of the adults out of principle. The kids still had fun, but the restaurant lost out on the additional business it would have received had we been treated like valued customers instead of coffee cattle. Forcing us to choose between keeping our coffees or feeding our children cost this establishment about $300--the amount our family of seven would normally spend on breakfast--all over three coffees. Instead, we only bought batter for the kids so they could still enjoy the experience. We spend several weeks in Maui every year and used to visit Slappy Cakes multiple times during each trip. We came in for breakfast early morning at 7am and ordered a dragonfruit chia bowl, grand slap, and mushroom scramble. The dragonfruit chia bowl was pretty good, just the ratio of the actual dragonfruit (puree) and chia pudding was about a spoonful of each in comparison to the actual fresh fruit. It was really off. The grand slap was basic with overcooked scrambled eggs, plain potatoes that tasted frozen from a bag, and dry toast. It didn't come with butter or jelly so we asked for some. The pancake was okay. We did ask if there was another kind of syrup available other than the maple syrup that was there at the table. Our server offered us coconut syrup which was brought out ice cold. On top of that there was a $3 charge for it which the server didn't mention and I didn't see it listed on the menu. The mushroom scramble was also dry and plain. We were seated quickly on a Saturday at 8 am. We ordered the Elvis pancakes and the seasonal Benedict, which was carnitas with a lilikoi Hollandaise sauce. The pancakes were nothing special and needed more of the bacon, peanut butter chip and banana topping. The butter provided at the table helped a little. I don't order eggs Benedict often but thought it was very good. I'm a passion fruit fanatic so I appreciated the hint of flavor in the sauce. The micro greens on top were a nice touch too. And you can't go wrong with a side of crispy potatoes, though they were pretty basic and could have used some seasoning. We've been coming here for years and I just realized I never submitted a review. We've been calling this place Slappy Jacks for so long (that's the name our toddlers gave it the first time we visited) that on our most recent visit, I forgot the actual name was Slappy Cakes, hah. This time we opted for two tried and true options, the griddle table for make your own pancakes for the kids (ok adults too, lol) and the Loco Moco. The Loco Moco has a nice smokey flavor to it and sits on a large bed of white rice topped with brown gravy, an egg of your choice, and green onion slivers. I could have used more gravy because it's definitely not swimming in it which is my preference - so if you like gravy, ask for extra or you'll be licking the plate for every drop. Big enough to split if you're also enjoying pancakes, but it'll you're hungry you'll want to eat the entire thing. ;) The kids enjoyed the buttermilk pancake batter and we opted for whipped cream, blueberries and chocolate chips as toppers for this visit. In the past we've tried the chocolate batter and other toppings but the chocolate chips and whipped cream are our go-to favorites. Our family doesn't really use syrup so it doesn't bother us that the "good stuff" is at a premium price like a few others have mentioned.
