3.6 -- i cant give it 4 stars because something about the ambiance i didn't like. nothing was wrong though.. i just didnt enjoy this restaurant as much as i have enjoyed other places.. the food was good but not amazing. the waiter was nice but he kinda talked funny and it bothered me a little.. I went on Christmas eve with mi hermana and it was still pretty lively. A lot of older people with friends/family. drinks: MANGO MARGARITA -- it was really fruity! i love fruity drinks! :)) appetizer: FRESH GUACAMOLE. (12) they make it in front of you! and you can choose your spicy level. we asked for spicy but it wasn't spicy. - -;; entree: 1) Carne Asada (22.5) -- the steak was juicy and tender. It also came out with a plain cheese enchilada. The first bite was good but there was too much cheese..The green rice was also good. It tasted slightly different than white or brown rice but I don't know what kind of different. Thank you Sinigual for disproving that Midtown is a wasteland when it comes to delcious, fresh food. This place rocks, and I'm used to good Mexican food since I'm from Texas. There were some great values: huge, chicken fajitas wrapped in soft melt-in-the-mouth tortillas, fresh guacamole, and a side of sweet corn. There were some overpriced items (but amazingly delcious): $12 for freshly made table-side guacamole with freshly fried chips. Maybe good for sharing or if someone else is paying. Business lunch? Only cons: could be spicier, would love chips instead of complimentary tortillas at the start of the meal, and more fresh chips with the $12 guac. The service, mood of the restuarant, and lack of wait time was amazing. The plates were all generous, filled with mixed flavors, and the prices are very reasonable for dinner. read more

Why oh why did we pick this place? I think it may have been a moment of temporary insanity from my husband. We walked in and the whole place screams tourist trap! If we weren't so hungry maybe we would have walked out. The server puts a name tag on the table so you don't forget his name. We ordered the tableside guac which was tasteless and btw, we ordered it spicy and I couldn't taste anything remotely spicy. The chips were good. I ordered the fish tacos - no taste. Positives: (1) nicer decor on the inside than you'd expect from the outside (quiet, nice tables), (2) FREE chips with two types of salsa (both tasty), (3) creative and balanced food combinations - I had carnitas that were very tender with sides of guac, a small bowl of beans, and a dollop of corn-based something that was great...co-workers had fish tacos and fajitas and were pleased with both, (4) friendly and attentive service - efficient enough for a work lunch, but not rushed at all. Been here about 3-4 times ranging from lunch with the coworkers to Administrative Professionals' Day happy hour .. that's what happens when your job is right across the street. And in those 3-4 times I've never been disappointed. Granted I've always gotten the same thing, Lobster Quesadillas, but they're SO delish! And the guac is great too. Drinks are pretty good but could be stronger, for example the Patron margarita came off a little weak .. then again this is coming from a girl that considers tequila her "juice". Prices are in the moderate range, anywhere from $11-30, but seems pretty good for a chain in the city. Servers are friendly and attentive. AMAZING guac. in my quest for the perfect one, this was was towards the top. i could've eatin it all as my meal. had dinner with my visiting mother and while she's not a fan of spicy- the waitress, who's name has escaped me :(, was very helpful with her suggestions and offering alternatives. beautiful atmosphere and decor. when we got there, she put flour tortillas, 2 salsas? and honey butter?i didnt get that. i wasnt going to fill a tortilla with salsa? it was strange. but whatever. drinks were very weak considering the price. probably wont be back but glad i went. read more

My first time having fish tacos and they were delicious. Went here during lunch time and my companion said it was pretty empty in there, so I guess they are usually packed because it definitely was not empty. I didn't pay for lunch so I can't say much for the price but for Midtown I think it was pretty reasonable. The rice and beans were also very good. And there was this corn puree thing on my plate which was good but I don't think I would want too much of. I definitely would go back to try some other things on their menu. read more

The food is 5 stars and is the only reason why I added another star. Exceptional food must be delivered by friendly/attentive wait staff. I took a friend out for his birthday. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees (and later a dessert). We received tortillas at the same time as one of our appetizers, the ceviche. Within two minutes, our guacamole was made for us. Four minutes later, our entrees arrived (carnitas and fish tacos). Our margaritas arrived as we were finishing our entrees, I sent my margarita back as it was delivered too late (we already toasted his birthday with water)! Our waiter was also very late in asking if we were enjoying our meal. We received all of our food within six minutes and our beverages did not come out until we were finished with our entrees. Furthermore, we had to request water refills and knives (which were casually plucked from a neighboring table). Our waiter was either distracted or uninterested in providing good service, which was a stark contrast to other waiters and ancillary staff that seemed busy and attentive. First impression - very nice decor, kind of slow for a Saturday night, great place to bring a date or impress someone. I came here with friends. We ordered the sangria bowl- me, being a wine lover, was not very impressed with it since it tasted more like capri sun than an actual red sangria. So major disappointment there. However, they redeemed themselves with the food. W-O-W. The prices are pretty reasonable and everything sounded delicious. I ordered the Dos Favoritos and let me tell you, come hungry! There is so much food!! The meat was seasoned just right and the sauces on the dish definitely enhanced the meal. My company had a luncheon here the other day and I was very impressed with the food. The food was fresh and had great flavor. My only complaint is that some of the dishes are on the small side. The guacamole was awesome so I definitely recommend it but again the amount of guacamole that you got was on the small side. Since I wasn't paying I didn't care how much lunch cost but the prices were a little on the high side. I will definitely come back again and give a Sinigual another try when I am with friends and not co-workers. read more

YUMMM!!! I got their Especial De La Casa which includes a lobster enchilada with a great sauce and a steak taco! Also comes with a side of rice and beans. It was a lot of food, very filling and SOOOOO good, I was practically licking the sauce off the plate! There was a group of 5 of us and we ordered the guacamole, they said it would only serve two people, but with all the chips, tortilla and salsa they serve beforehand, it was plenty enough for us. This is definitely my go to place in Manhattan for mexican. Though it is "contemporary" mexican it still delivers my big Texas craving. I always fall for chowing down on the guac...and when the food comes I'm pretty full. But I still manage to finish whatever is on my plate...especially their lobster enchilada paired with a caipirinha. The decor is elegent, and service is fantastic. Went here for lunch. My party of 3 ordered the guacamole for starters. It was pretty good. Not at all spicy for medium spice level. The complimentary tortillas were really yummy with the sweet butter. The fish taco is decent. Not a fan of the chopped mango in the taco, but the fish was grilled and seasoned well. The rice and sweet corn that came with the meal were good. I would have preferred black beans over the beans that came with the meal. Our waiter asked us 3 times whether we wanted tequila shots. We sorta didn't get his humor, even when he told us he couldn't split the check with more than 1 credit card unless the bill was over $100. Funny? We didn't get it. Ambiance and general atmosphere are pretty solid, though Sinigual can feel pretty empty at times since it's quite a large space. Regardless, it's a cool scene located in an area dominated by office buildings and a corporate crowd. Salsas and guac were right on point, but entrees left a bit to be desired. In particular, lobster quesadillas were entirely too sweet with pineapple/mango salsa overtaking the taste of the dish. Fish tacos were fine but not on par with some of the best I've had, and chicken & corn enchiladas were also good but not great. Stick to Sinigual for happy hour drinks and appetizers, but not necessarily dinner. read more

Love the guacamole here! But...for the price of the simple food...eh. I had the pineapple margarita and the carnitas yucatan. The margarita was delicious. And I loved the pork and rice in my entree. The margaritas are amazing, the food is only meh. One thing though is that they do offer to make the Guac in front of you which looks delicious and my gf and I did not get it, so maybe that would jump it up a star. The ambiance is very nice, good date place (especially if you remember that the margaritas are great). Instead of chips and salsa for the table, you get tortillas and salsa. Points for originality there even though it was a pain to dip. My girlfriend got the fajitas and I got one of those mix and match combos. Had possibly one of my worst dining experiences ever at Sinigual this past weekend. We made a dinner reservation 3 weeks in advance for Cinco de Mayo. However, the hostess sat us at a fold up table in the front with a trash can bag looking tablecloth over it. We asked to be moved and so they brought us to another fold up table but one that at least had a real table cloth. But one of the legs must have been wobbly because during our dinner the entire table collapsed which caused everything to spill. When the manager came to help us, he said they would just clean it up and have us sit back down at that table... We obviously did not agree to that, and were finally seated at a normal table. I barely even remember how the food was because of the terrible experience. We were also served our drinks at the table in plastic cups... Horrible place with subpar overpriced Mexican food. read more

Service was awesome! Waiter was extremely friendly and had great conversation. The table side guacamole was my favorite! The chips were better than average chips at a Mexican restaurant, and the salsa they give you for the table was so good! It seemed as though they had roasted the vegetables prior to making the salsa. We also got the steak, chicken, and shrimp fajitas and a steak taco. The steak taco was amazing! The steak and shrimp on the fajitas were great. The chicken was a little off. It had a weird rubber texture. I wouldn't recommend getting the chicken. The fajita shells are probably the best part of the fajita. They are freshly made. Amazing service and food! Ive been here quite a few times for upscale Spanish (or whatever the non offensive word is these days) food and enjoyed the decor as well as the selection of items. This time was better in particular due to the super-friendly server we had (Katarina). The manager also specially came by our table. Rolled in at 8pm on a Friday, and there was no wait. The atmosphere was very relaxed, sort of romantic. Our server was very attentive, I loved his flourish when going over the menu, it was cute. I wasn't that impressed with the food, I ordered chicken tacos, which were a bit soggy when they came out and served on their side, so when I picked up a taco, everything fell out of it. The plantain rice was delicious tho, and black beans were well seasoned. My friend got the Santa Fe stack, which looked delicious. Recently, on a whim, I checked out Sinigual in Murray Hill for some Mexican food. I didn't know what to expect when I walked into this place since from the outside, it doesn't look like much. However, once inside, the restaurant opens up into a large room with lots of tables. On a Friday night, the restaurant was very busy. We ordered a bunch of your typical Mexican food - fajitas, enchiladas, tacos, etc., but at Sinigual, everything has a contemporary flare. We also had some margaritas and sangria which came in enormous glasses and was enough to keep us going through the entire meal. The highlight of the meal (at least for me) was my dish, filet mignon enchiladas with grilled shrimp. This dish was one of the specials. However, from what I've heard, it's on the specials menu every night. This dish was delicious. It was much like your typical enchilada dish but the sauce that was used to top the enchilada had a great sweet taste that added to the filet mignon. Additionally, the grilled shrimp were incredible. They had a great barbeque flavor that I absolutely loved. I didn't want the shrimp to end. read more

Loved the ambience here and attentive service made it even better. They have some interesting margaritas - I tried the grilled pineapple and enjoyed it just enough. They made some fresh guacamole by the table and served us the spicy, medium and mild version - the spicy wasn't spicy at all unfortunately. I would recommend the halibut entree - it was a well done fish preparation. And the lobster quesadilla was a nice treat too. Most other entrees coming out of the kitchen smelled delicious (especially the fajitas) and was well presented. Came here for a business dinner while visiting clients in New York. We called ahead and reserved a table for 6:30 on a Tuesday which was good because it was crowded. The interior was very inviting, Mexican inspired and intimate. Prices are decent for a New York dinner, drinks around $10 and entrees $20-30. They bring you salsa and tortillas (we were a little confused why they didn't just have chips). The food was good, nothing spectacular but I just had fajitas. Looked like they had some more interesting options like lobster quesadillas but I wasn't feeling adventurous. Came here on a Sunday at 7:15pm with 2 friends just for some guacamole and drinks. We ordered 2 margaritas and a mango mojito, and I can say that while they were totally delicious, it's questionable if there was any alcohol in them because we couldn't taste it at all...so it's up to you what you care more about. The guacamole was good, not spicy at all which I like, but I will warn that it was very salty. It was not made at our table like it said, so we couldn't customize it and let them know what we wanted more/less of. The main reason I'm rating this place lower is because of the service. It was actually horrendous. In the two and a half hours we were there, our waiter only checked on us (or even walked by our table) once. We ran out of chips for the guacamole, then had to wait 30 minutes for more chips because no waiters came anywhere near us. We waited 45 minutes just to get our check at the end because even when we started asking random waiters for our check, they wouldn't actually bring it to us. It was a mess. read more

Wow. My Roomate had a guest in town and we were craving some good Mexican. Sinigual had good reviews so we gave it a go. Upon arriving I was very overwhelmed by the interior. I felt like I was in the most upscale place in midtown. It was pleasing to the eye. There were a lot of things popping out and drawing your attention such as the star lights We started with some guac and chips. It was delicious. I ordered chicken taquitos for dinner and they were delicious. Presented well and so flavorful. It was the cheapest thing on the menu, but by no means did the chef half-ass it, I want to mention how great the service was. Our waitress was polite and knowledgeable. I accidentally was that person who asked for the specials only to decide something else. I felt bad about it, but my waitress wasn't annoyed at all. I wish yelp had a way to specifically mention your waitress, because I'd ask for her again next time I go. Overall it's a great place, a bit expensive , but worth the product. Finally, some decent Mexican food in midtown. We ordered take out and were impressed with the cute and gigantic platters that we had to carry out in shopping bags. I come from the perspective of a Californian spoiled by amazing Mexican food in Cali. 3 stars --- very average place. The guac that everyone raves about is good not great. At $12, it's overpriced beyond a doubt. The free chips and salsa -- 2 types of chips, 2 types of salsa -- is a very nice touch. The location of the place, as well as the sprawling massive interior with high ceilings, are both big pluses. Being able to reserve via OpenTable is very convenient. But the food is simply nothing special. The fish tacos are somewhat creative, but not super satisfying. The black beans lack that freshness that makes black beans amazing. The enchiladas are something a novice Mexican cook could put together. Overall, right in the middle. You won't be blown away here but you won't feel like it was a waste of a meal either. read more

Classy, really nice place. They have a tray with guacamole they come over and hand-prepare for you. And the ambiance is unique with stars on the ceiling serving as your lighting, wispy curtains adorning the windows, and bright orange/metallic walls with an open-view of the kitchen preparation area. We came here for a friend's birthday dinner get together, and they treated all 10 of us very well. All of our dishes were spectacular! And I hardly ever take a picture of my food, but mine was so cool-looking (everyone around me was wowed by it!), I did! I got the Taquitos-delicious! And for my drink I had the Mojito! YUMMY! On a business trip in NYC, went to lunch with colleagues. This restaurant was recommended by a local. I've finally found a GOOD Mexican restaurant in NYC!!! Well, better than good. I tried the "Especial de la Casa" (house specialty) found on the menu and it was beyond excellent A lobster enchilada (with big chunks of lobster) with a steak soft taco, retried black beans & cilantro rice. Let me tell you this was one superb dish!!! We also tried the guac made table side and what appeared to be home made tortillas (they do serve chips, btw). When I interned in the area (Jan. 2011), I stopped by not having heard anything about it. From an objective point of view, the tableside guacamole was a hit. It was fresh, flavorful, and fun to watch. They don't skimp on the avocado. I also had a variety of dishes, including the fish tacos, carnitas, and the carne asada y chimichurri. i've been to Mexico before and had some legit tacos. Sinigual comes close. The restaurant was a high-end mexican restaurant as was evident from the ambiance and arrangements inside. For drinks, I got the Grilled Pineapple and cilantro fresca. It was basically a spitzer with a combination of pineapple and lime juice with a hint of cilantro. I was surprised that I could taste the cilantro but it gave it a nice cool taste to the tongue. It was a well needed refresher from the summer heat. We went ahead and got guacamole for the appetizer and this was a special treat. A server came up and made the guacamole in front of us in a large bowl. It looked cool to watch and it also tasted fresh. All the parts such as the onions and avocados weren't pureed as usual and was still chunky. So, I enjoyed that. What surprised me was that the guacamole didnt taste that much different from when I make fresh guac at home. The real surprise came with my entree. I was sort of disappointed when they wouldnt let me change any of their ingredients from beef or chicken to beans because they were already pre-made. So, I went with the only vegetarian dish on the menu - a Fire-roasted vegetable platter. I am usually not a big fan of veggie platters because they are bland and not too filling. But, I loved this one. It comes with a huge pepper that is filled with corn and cheese chile sauce. It was spicy and the goat cheese they gave on the side really complemented the spiciness. The rest of the plate was an assortment of grilled veggies like yams and eggplant; they were roasted well and the light dressing they placed on them went well.
