Tucked away in the quiet town of Healdsburg, SingleThread delivers the kind of experience that immediately reminds you why it stands among California's three Michelin star destinations. From the very beginning of the meal, there was a clear sense of precision, elegance, and intention. The opening presentation was stunning, filled with an assortment of beautifully composed small bites featuring oyster, mushroom, sea bream, and a variety of other seasonal ingredients. Each bite felt delicate yet purposeful, showcasing both technical refinement and remarkable balance. One of the most memorable dishes of the evening was the bluefin tuna moriawase paired with strawberries. Normally, fruit in savory dishes tends to feel distracting or overly sweet to me, but the execution here was exceptional. The chefs managed to create a harmony between sweetness, tartness, acidity, and umami that elevated the tuna rather than overshadowing it. It was a dish that felt thoughtful, restrained, and incredibly well composed. The consistency throughout the progression of the menu was equally impressive. Course after course arrived with meticulous presentation and a strong sense of identity. Every dish felt polished and intentional, balancing visual artistry with flavors that were equally compelling. There was never a moment where the meal lost momentum, and the pacing allowed each course to feel distinct while still contributing to a cohesive experience. That said, there was one course that completely missed the mark for our group. The milk and honey dessert, which resembled a sponge cake topped with a whipped goat cheese foam, was overwhelmingly pungent and difficult to approach as a dessert course. The intensity of the goat cheese dominated every other component, to the point where it felt less like a composed dessert and more like being punched by a goat farm. Looking around the dining room, it seemed we were not alone in our reaction. Interestingly, when we mentioned that this was the only dish we did not enjoy, we were told, "if at least 1 out of 10 guests enjoy it, we consider it a win." It was certainly an unexpected response, especially given how polished and thoughtful the rest of the experience had been. Even with that misstep, the overall meal was exceptional. Food Service Wine Beer Experience Tonight was my first night here and I don't know how I missed it since it has been open nine years. It was so good that it blows my mind. Since I was just in Paris for 15 days, I booked this upon my return so that I could experience the American version of perfection. It is mind blowing how good it is here. Every course and every moment ... feels special and delicious. Americans have definitely enhanced the lifestyle experience. I know I like it in France... and I love it here at home! Maybe a bit more! Set in the idyllic town of Healdsburg, Single Thread was an incredible experience. The farm to table restaurant serves a coursed meal with inspirations from traditional Japanese kaiseki. The dishes were beautifully plated and delicious. Service was friendly and professional. They also offer a non-alcoholic paring which was very interesting and a must try if you're not a heavy drinker. The ambiance of the restaurant was very nice and felt as though you were being transported to another place entirely. All the elements came together to create a whimsical experience and a wonderful evening. This was a whole dance from start to finish! My parents took me here for my birthday and I was blown away by the entire experience. The restaurant is located in Healdsburg, which is a super cute town in Sonoma County! We were seated at the table right in front of the kitchen and it was impressive watching the entire flow of the service. Every dish was meticulous, thoughtful, and delicious. There was never a moment we needed to ask for anything because they were ten steps ahead of us. We all opted for the wine pairing which I thought was fair and good. My only criticism is that the ounces of wine poured into our glasses was quite different. This wasn't a huge deal though as I felt they were pretty generous with the pours. Time passed quickly and we were seated for about three hours. It was truly a unique and very intimate experience. Nothing compares! read more

My two friends and I had a 7:45pm reservation, and I regret not arriving a little earlier to wander their charming downtown area. They have their own private parking lot, and there's plenty of street parking. We were seated within 5 minutes of arriving, and I was grateful for our table in the corner as it was quieter. We had efficient, professional service and although I appreciated the rundown of each dish, I wish we were given the menu to keep throughout our meal instead of when we left. I typically forget everything I'm told after I've heard it, especially when I'm not familiar with certain ingredients :) Everything tasted wonderful and fresh, and the mocktail pairing was unique. My favorite course was the first because of its initial impression; we sat down to a gorgeous flower arrangement with little plates already scattered throughout for us to grab. One of my friends typically doesn't eat seafood because she's sensitive to its fishy smell, but she loved all the seafood served. We were so full by the end of our 10 course tasting, and we left immensely satisfied with our experience. My friend also noted he hopes to stay at their inn next time; I believe it's $1317 a night and includes a dinner reservation as well as a breakfast. Near perfect modern Japanese in a near perfect environment with near perfect staff. It's terrific and worth a side trip specifically to go. Food was perfectly prepared. It was even more perfectly presented ( I actually wanted to get the minimalist table settings for my home, but don't worry I didn't steal the silverware: ) The interior was similar to the table settings, classy elegance with a slick minimalist vibe. 3 Michelin star restaurant in Healdsburg This wasn't on our Napa agenda at all...until my sister said "oh look I can get a reservation!" and then I had to figure out how we were going to get from San Jose to Oakville to Sonoma to Healdsburg all in one day. 10 course meal is a treat for the eyes and taste buds. We were greeted at the kitchen window with a welcome palate cleanser (?) and then we sat down to the prettiest edible centerpiece for the first course. It doesn't really matter what specific dishes we had because it changes seasonally, they grow most of their veggies on their farm (which you can tour before your meal only on certain days, make a res ahead of time, the farm is 10min drive away from the restaurant. What really impressed me the most is that they accommodated each individuals preferences/allergies (which we told them way in advance) so we all could enjoy every single dish. Let me tell you how big a deal this was for us. One of us was gluten free/no raw seafood, one of us was no seafood, no fish! (At a freaking sushi inspired kaiseki place!). But all 10 courses looked very similar for each of us but yet had substitutions. To me that was super impressive. The entire team was super knowledgeable about every single ingredient. They are well trained in both service and answering random questions (how many ppl can you seat here? Why is the restaurant called SingleThread? Can you eat these little flowers?) The theme was "tomato" in one dish and I hate tomatoes but it was still pretty interesting. Tomato ice cream! Overall this was the most bougie over the top meal I've ever had, but way more enjoyable and fun than the other 3-star Michelin restaurant in Napa. Bravo to the entire staff! read more

Came here for my birthday dinner and it was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had! When you enter you're greeted by this beautifully executed array of welcome bites, followed by 9 courses of seasonal, Japanese inspired dishes. My favorites were the gravenstein apple, a duck liver parfait, and the caramelized mugi shime, which was thinly sliced wagyu over a warm bed of porridge. Beautiful interior and service was excellent, everything was accounted for and considered, from the menus, to a signed birthday card, to the well polished staff serving and explaining each course. Spectacular! Our favorite fine dining experience! They offer a tour of their farm, and I highly recommend you go if you have time. It's a nice touch to see where they source most of their produce. The night starts off with a welcome tea and a glimpse into the kitchen before entering and sitting down to the stunning opening course. The spread is both tastes amazing and visually beautiful. About 10 tasty bites of food - oysters, sashimi, black sesame tofu, all delicious. There's 3 different wine pairings ($300/500/1000), we opted to share the basic pairing. It was very nice of the sommelier to give us an extra glass of champagne so we could toast! Their Japanese-American farm to table tasting menu hit every high note, not a single misstep on their menu. I enjoyed learning about where they sourced the food and the creation of the dish. Some highlights included the duck consume, the squash blossom and scallop dish, and the apricot jelly with tuna! We went to SingleThread with high expectations and they were met. The entirety of the experience was not perfect, but it came darn close. Our reception by the staff was nothing short of excellent. The ambiance, decor, and warm wood feel of the interior was sumptuous, elegant, yet welcoming. I did not feel like I was in a stuffy restaurant. The presentation of each dish was excellent. The amuse-bouches stole the show early on, and were presented on an incredible platter featuring real plants. The courses were all 8/10 or more. Everything was carefully sourced and incredibly fresh. The wine pairings were tasteful and creative. I sometimes spring for the more expensive pairings but was thoroughly pleased with the selection of mostly new world wines (read: excellent wines from California). The roof was also quite lovely, although the service slowed down there quite a bit. We waited longer than we would have liked for our coffee, which was delicious and warm. 98/100 is not perfect. But Single Thread earns its three stars and my utmost respect. It's worth the trip to Healdsburg. read more

Story Time I am not going to cry. Many tears have been shed since April 30 and I don't want to dwell in the past anymore. I was updating my calendar as I was sorting through receipts today and I got lost going through some photos (53,363 of them to be exact). My sister, Patricia, needed a break from the kids, her husband, work, dentistry school, and our mom. She flew down to California to help me stage and list a distressed property in Clearlake. It was my first pro bono file since the seller, an old lady, had bought it for more than what it is worth in 2007 after her divorce. Her ex-husband said that she took him to the Chinese cleaners. Sales History * Feb 5, 2007 -- Sold: $350,000 * Jul 3, 2019 -- Sold: $255,000 That's about a -$95K drop (~27%) from 2007 2019 (Likely impacted by the housing crash + local market conditions) This was an upside down property. I just looked up the value on Zillow and coincidentally the house is back on the market! It is currently listed for $297,000. It has been on the market on and off since April 2025. Apparently, it is a tough market for sellers. That area like Patterson never recovered back to the height of the market in 2007 which was right before the real estate market crash. Basically, after 19+ years, the vacation is still worth less than what she purchased it for in 2007. How was she going to pay me to list her house? The seller was under water (no pun intended since her backyard was a green lake). She had to bring money into escrow in order to pay off her mortgage. Patricia yelled at me because I told her that the pictures she was hanging up was not straight. She said, "Why does it have to perfect? Why do we always need to do it your way!!?" I forgot that she just had surgery to remove the tumor from her brain. The surgeon took too much brain cells out (to make sure that all of the damaged tissue was removed as a precautionary measure). This affected my sister's ability to see well. I simply forgot that she was sick in my pathetic desperation to make the house look good for the open house on Saturday. My sister had lung cancer and I had no idea at the time how her death, exactly 3 years and 3 months later, would unravel my little perfect world. Somewhere in our frustrations with different but very similar situations, Patricia and I both needed a vacation. Waking up to the sound of waters and seagulls in the morning was very relaxing but there was no way I could continue to drive to Clearlake every weekend. To make myself feel better for driving 3.5 hours to Clearlake and another 3.5 hours back home after the open house and spending Saturday night there eating cup -o-noodles from Walmart, I decided that we NEEDED to eat really well on Sunday evening. I made every trip to Clearlake a mini vacation for myself by stopping in Napa on the way home. We had dinner reservations at Single Thread Farm in Healdsburg, CA. It was a surprise. My sister always puts Derek and the 5 kids first. I wanted to thank her for being a great sister to me and the rest of my siblings. She is very nurturing and is the glue in our family. The waitress asked us what we were celebrating because we were under dressed for such a fancy 3 Star Michelin restaurant. My sister had a white T-shirt with her Costco leggings and black jacket. I told everyone that my sister beat cancer. She survived her brain surgery and was taking morning walks every day at the park. The tumor in her lung was not growing; it was not shrinking (with the experimental drugs) but was stable. They treated my sister and I like royalty. The food was clean, modern, simple and classical at the same time. They focused on Japanese food with amazing presentations. My sister sheepishly asked me how much was the pre-fixed menu dinner. I showed her the bill of $17 for the drink that we ordered for her. This is a pre-paid dinner. The price was a lot at the time but I would pay a million dollars to have dinner with my sister again. I still see her in my dreams and feel her presence when I am in Renton but it is not the same without her in this 3D realm. If it was possible, I would trade places with her so that Bryan, Brandon, Bradley, Brooke, and Brielle would still have a mother. She can hang the pictures however she wants; it doesn't matter anymore. I just want her to be alive again. We don't need to eat fancy food. I can eat Lee's Sandwiches banh mi and In-N-Out burger too, Chi Phuc. Review: 5 out of 5 stars for giving my sister and I an experience of a lifetime. We opted for a 4:30 pm dinner since we had a long drive there and an equally long drive back and we did not want to get back too late. There's a good amount of parking around the area, but if you come early there's actually a small parking lot you are allowed to use. Service was really well done - before we entered the restaurant, we were trying to take selfies outside the restaurant. The hostesses somehow noticed, came outside, and took photos for us. The servers were also super friendly, professional, and it was fun talking to each of the different servers we got. Ambiance was super nice. For the majority of the meal, we got sat in a corner booth. We loved how big the table was, as well as how comfortable the seats were. At the end of the meal, we got to sit on the rooftop and enjoy the sunset, as well as sit in front of the firepit. Food: - Most of the courses were amazing. Aesthetically stunning and I could see lots of technical details in the sauces, how the ingredients were prepared, etc. - There was a heavy focus on produce (vegetables). I kind of liked this, but for some courses it felt a bit much. There was one dish that was focused on tomatoes that I thought was good, but a bit too produce forward for me. Another dish paired duck mousse with lettuce, which was fine, but I thought it would have been more enjoyable with a bread/carb instead. - I really disliked one dish because of their usage of bittermelon (or at least some type of bitter eggplant). Easily one of my top 3 favorite restaurants of all time! Celebrated a milestone anniversary with my husband here over the weekend. The moment we approached the door, they greeted us by name. They took us to a little window were we can glimpse the chefs working; where they also presented us with a welcome drink. After that, we were led into a smaller room past the kitchen with a fireplace against the back wall. We were seated and given a brief introduction of Single Thread, the owner's inspiration of Japanese inspired dishes given their five year stay in Japan. After our trip to Japan, our love for anything related to Japan grew so we appreciated the Japanese influenced menu. The room we dined in had walls that remind us of shoji, the wooden frame sliding doors in Japan covered in washi, a Japanese paper or cloth. The delicious 10 course meal started with a presentation of wood covered with fresh florals with 9 mini bites of what is yet to come. I asked for a matcha latte which their served with a leaf art. Each course bought colorful, Japanese influenced dishes meets farm-to-table Sonoma County (Single Thread has a 24 acre farm in Healdsburg where a majority of their greens, herbs are grown). I enjoyed the explanation of each dish, the ingredients and where it comes from. Some notable dishes were of course the A5 wagyu and I recommend getting the wagyu supplement. My absolute most favorite thing about Single Thread is their farm! We tasted so many fresh vegetables, flowers, herbs, tomatoes and grapes within the dishes. The next morning, we embarked on their farm tour to see where the food we ate came from as well as being able to taste fresh strawberries, tomatoes, peppers etc. We saw chefs out there on the farm picking out different ingredients for their dishes. It was truly amazing to see the growing process, harvesting process to ending up on kitchen, your plate, and leftovers crops gets sent back to the farm for composting. Truly farm-to-table and enjoyed eating from the bountiful crops grown locally in Sonoma County. If you are wondering about dress code, it is "Wine County Casual". Think of what you would wear to Wine tasting. Mens would be polos, button down with khakis with some stylish sneakers. For Women, sundresses, a nice top with jeans or capris and stylish wedges or sneakers. Come with an empty stomach as there are many dishes to eat. The only thing I would change is I prefer to have the menu in the beginning so I can see what courses to expect instead of having it in the end to take home. KenScale: 8.5/10 Visit: December 2023 [Note: After some deliberations, I have decided to upgrade all restaurants receiving 8.5 or 8.75 KenScale to five Yelp stars from four.] Among the restaurants I had booked for my birthday trip to the Bay Area last December with my wife Jun, I was looking forward to a visit to SingleThread the most. Led by chef Kyle Connaughton and his wife Katina who farms many of the ingredients, SingleThread has quickly vaulted into one of the best restaurants in California if not America, with three Michelin stars in addition to other countless accolades. I was particularly intrigued by the restaurant, owned by a Caucasian couple, looking to pay homage to Japan's multi-course kaiseki tradition (inspired by their time in the country) with California ingredients and ethos. Did our dinner on my birthday live up to the hype? I would say SingleThread is worth visiting as a dining destination if you can stomach the hefty price tag. The format at SingleThread consists of ten courses, starting with a stunning display of vegetable, seafood and meat snacks placed artfully across a board resembling a beautiful mini garden of colorful flowers and plants. I was somewhat surprised by the rather large number of snacks that I was almost feeling halfway full by the time we were done with them, but in any event it was quite a showstopper to make us think the kitchen is not settling for an ordinary meal but aiming for an experience of a lifetime for diners. Most of the dishes that followed also displayed the very high level of execution and thoughtfulness. One of my favorite dishes of the night was a gorgeous combination of Santa Barbara abalone and uni surrounded by sea lettuce cream and chawanmushi; it was a quintessential example of the kitchen's ability to skillfully navigate between Japanese and Californian cuisines. Another dish that offered a pleasant surprise was a colorful salad of salanova lettuce, badger flame beets and orange with duck liver parfait buried beneath to offer a unique flavor. For a winter dinner, you would certainly appreciate an aromatic bowl of aka amadai fish (a type of tilefish) with pumpkin mochi, Napa cabbage and bone dashi, or (another favorite of mine) a bowl of koshinikari rice with mushrooms in duck tsukune broth. We also really liked the main dessert made of Warren pear, toasted oat and cardamom, as well as the smaller sweet bites that came after. Getting a reservation at SingleThread definitely requires advance planning with ticket purchase up front. Since we were dining during the holiday season, the ticket price was higher than normal times at almost $500 per person. If you are willing to shell out even more beyond the meal, there are three different wine pairing options, also at eye-watering prices starting in the hundreds. The entry-level pairing that we tried showcased a thoughtful selection of wines from California and various places of Europe, plus one sake. Of course, you can also choose individual bottles from a not surprisingly expansive wine list featuring many boutique California producers. The minimalist décor of the restaurant adds an aura of Japanese aesthetics that aligns with its culinary philosophy. Yes, SingleThread will cost an arm and a leg but Jun and I agreed that it is a very, very good restaurant. I do admit, though, that dining at the restaurant was another moment (like the dinner we had at n/naka in Los Angeles) where we realized that we had done maybe too much fine dining and we didn't have the kind of eye-opening experience at some of our all-time favorite places. I have eaten at SingleThread when it was awarded One Michelin Star, Two Michelin Stars, and now Three Michelin Stars! The ambiance and service have been equally exquisite each time! This remains one of my three favorite restaurants on the planet and I will definitely come back again! To be honest, they have increased the prices of the various Wine Pairings and, unfortunately, the wines still are fairly young. Which is odd, because they have an exceptional Wine List with both depth and breadth. We ordered a bottle of white and a bottle of red, then some dessert wine by the glass, and that felt like more volume and higher quality (at least more bottle age) even though it was admittedly fewer varietals overall. Our reservation was late in the evening, and a breeze had picked up, so we did not go sit up on the roof by the garden, which has been a highlight of prior trips. Next time for sure, I will go back up there! Speaking of their garden, they grow -- and served -- the most delicious tomatoes I have ever had and a "melon cucumber" our server (one of at least 9 who helped us throughout the evening!) described as "the cutest fruit on the property" ... and it was!!! read more

Wow, just wow. Came here to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. I've been to many a fancy meal (including French Laundry nearby) but SingleThread blew me away. And to be honest, that is really tough at this price point because I came with high expectations. From the food, to the wine pairing, to the impeccable service, everything flowed perfectly and was ridiculously impressive. I haven't enjoyed a fine dining experience this much in a really long time. In addition, the staff were like ninjas often refilling my water glass or taking away finished dishes without me noticing. The presentation of each dish was beautiful, especially the first one. A storied experience To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect when I walked in. But I think now I understand - this is a true, integrated farm to table experience. Every dish here takes freshness to the extreme, and the ingredient choices are interesting and provide the punchline. The table setting and plating exudes freshness from the extensive use of branches and leaves and the tiny edible flowers on almost every dish (which actually provide complimentary flavor). I wouldn't necessary say that every dish was optimized for taste, but rather optimized to bring out the taste of a farm. Also having heard Kaiseki style meal as a descriptor for the food, I was afraid that there would be a lack of spice would be the problem, but fortunately that was not a problem since the flavoring seemed purposely exaggerated for blunted Western taste buds. The Asian influence is clear and something I always welcome. As you walk in, you are given a warm mulled cider and seated right away *Opening bites - As you sit down at your table, the opening course is already laid out. It is an impressive arrangement of plants and flowers with numerous small bites neatly arranged. It is reminiscent of a Kaiseiki course with many types of offers, including tuna, oysters, amberjack, and thinly sliced steak. My fav was probably the panna cotta with mushroom topped with caviar - so much umami in one bite. *Kan Buri - Another refreshing fresh fish dish, balanced with persimmon and ponzu. The miso ice provided a savory twist *Georgia Candy Roaster Soup - I have to admit, I don't eat a whole lot of squish soup, but this was the soup was very well balanced. The tofu skin in the soup worked surprisingly well and the fritter provided a nice contrast *Healdsburg Chestnut - Probably the freshest lettuce I've had. Served with a crunchy spiced soil, which was both thematic and a nice flavoring pair with the lettuce. Probably too much foie gras for one person to eat, but it's hard to say no *Kinmedai - 3 different types of cabbage? I didn't even know there were that many types. The fish was heavily salted with a slight chew, a skin to ham, which was a nice departure from all the prior raw fish that we have had *Albion Strawberry - Definitely a risky dish. Didn't know that cheese could be turned into ice cream and how strong it could be. The cheese was very pungent on its own, but the acidic strawberry actually cut into it. I applaud the effort, but the not the best tasting *Sonoma Wagyu - Who doesn't love steak? Especially when its this tender. Not sure if local Wagyu is different from Japanese, but I appreciate the effort to make it feel closer to home *Matsutake & Short Rib Cohan - Umami bomb. Short ribs falls apart on the pillowy savory rice. I love mushrooms so easy score with the murshroom soup and grilled mushrooms *Sunchoke - I was skeptical. Basically a chocolate croissant, but made pristine. I couldn't taste the sunchoke per se, but I could feel its thickness in the filling. The hot white chocolate didn't taste like sunchoke either. I didn't mind the chocolate ice cream bar (it was delicious), but didn't feel that special. *Wagashi - I was too full at this point to fully appreciate this and the many asian inspired dessert offerings blurred together, but you can always find room for more dessert. The exploding chocolate egg really surprised me (despite the warning). Of course, the service here is impeccable and I applaud the staff. Also needless to say the dishes are prepared perfectly with impeccable detail. They send you with a menu and some japanese vegetable seeds on the way out, which is on point. Bravo I am curious about the farm and its a real shame that is it offsite from the actual restaurant. If you love Japanese style cuisine you will love this restaurant. It took a while to score these reservations but it finally happened. Once we sat down at the table we were greeted with the first course sitting at the table when we arrived. It was about 10 bites and each one was so thoughtfully designed. If all we had was the first course it would have been a great meal by itself. There were so many great courses. Of all the tasting menus I have done I have never been more full than after this tasting. The servers were some of the best I have seen. We actually closed down the restaurant and were the last ones to leave. Very cool restaurant and highly recommend it. read more

I was invited to dinner here as part of a work event and could not have been more excited. For a week straight this place had been hyped up to me and I was beginning to worry that my expectations were too high. They were not. A 10+ course meal where everything tasted amazing and each time something new came out, it became my favorite dish. The presentation is amazing and the staff does a great job of answering questions and explaining what items are and how they are prepared. The ambiance inside is special and after dinner they took us to their roof patio for a nice drink. Advice I'd share is to come on a completely empty stomach as it is a lot of food and you don't want to be too full to eat something! It is a little pricey as well, but certainly a place everyone should eat at least once. No surprise it's a 3 star Michelin restaurant! read more

we're not rich, but we wanted to do something special to celebrate some special people in our lives with that in mind, my questions before coming to singlethread were: is it worth it, will it be uniquely delicious, and will we be full? (poor people questions) will it be worth it? somewhat, for us. i'm glad we did it for a special occasion, but we likely wouldn't do it again. it's ridiculously expensive for us. this is subjective, of course. if we were billionaires, then yes, it's worth it. will it be uniquely delicious? yes. it was definitely unique for us. there is A LOT of thought put into almost every dish. i don't think there's any point in mentioning the dishes, because it seems like this is the type of place that creates new dishes depending on season and availability. all the food was at least good, mostly great, some amazing. tonight, the duck and desserts were amazing will we be full? yes. we were well-fed. we weren't counting the dishes, but about halfway, they served a satsuma orange sorbet. at that point, i was a little worried that we entered the dessert stage and the dishes would start slowing down, but they continued with savory dishes, ended with a filling porridge dish, then a super-dense chocolate dessert, followed by a brighter dessert sampler. we were full. presentation was beautiful. service was as great as you'd expect from a place like this. cozy room, dim lights, soft music, great food knocked out a member of our party right at the table pro tip: amazing bidets in the bathroom. use the remote to flush. read more

I celebrated my 30th birthday here, and I was so excited for a farm-grown, seasonal, and elevated food experience. From the moment we sat down, the anticipation built -- especially with the first course: a stunning presentation of 13 different small bites artfully placed among fresh flowers. It was truly one of the most beautiful and iconic plating experiences I've ever seen. The meal continued with a series of thoughtfully curated tasting courses that leaned heavily into Japanese-American fusion, both in flavor and presentation. A lot of the dishes included wasabi or mint-like notes, and while beautifully executed, the repetition of a salty, mint-forward base flavor across several courses started to feel a bit one-note. We had clearly communicated our vegetarian dietary restrictions (no meat, seafood, or eggs; dairy is okay), but the menu didn't seem to reflect much creativity within those boundaries. The lack of variation -- particularly the repeated wasabi/minty flavors -- made it feel like there wasn't as much thoughtfulness in the vegetarian curation as we had hoped for. The service, while polite, didn't quite meet our expectations for a 3 Michelin-starred experience. We were hoping to hear more about the farm, the ingredients, and the chef's philosophy. But there was little storytelling, and very few insights shared with each course. On a positive note, every course was visually stunning, well-plated, and tasted good. You can absolutely feel the skill of the kitchen. But the lack of narrative and emotional connection made the experience feel a bit flat for such a highly acclaimed destination. The dessert, a raspberry sorbet, was underwhelming -- not particularly unique or memorable, especially given the hype and the level of dining we expected. My husband and I stayed and dined at SingleThread to celebrate our 10 year anniversary this past weekend. It was definitely an unforgettable experience! "Farm-to-table" would be the best words to describe it, as you can truly taste the freshness of the ingredients that we've never experienced before. There's organic and then there's SingleThread level of organic. When you stay at the inn, dinner is guaranteed, as well as breakfast and a farm tour. If you are able to, I'd definitely recommend to, as staying just upstairs above the restaurant is apart of the collective experience. There's nothing quite like retreating a few steps to your suite after a night of indulgent eating and wine! We opted for the second tier of wine tasting which was $500/person. We enjoyed the first 3 wines but the rest were kinda meh. Albeit, we are usually champagne drinkers. If we were to ever come back, we'd probably just get a bottle of sparkling instead. Now, onto the food. Presentation was top-notch, unlike anything we'd ever seen before. We tried to have an open mind about all the dishes as this is what to expect with SingleThread and its plethora of varied ingredients. Expect a lot of edible flowers and tastes of herbs that you have never tried before. Our two favorite dishes were: the crab trio dish which featured a crab dumpling, as well as the main dish which was duck. We were happy that we didn't sub the duck for wagyu because the duck was cooked to perfection! The flavors were out of this world and I wish we could have had more. We were extremely full though, by the end of the dinner. In terms of the in-room dining at our suite, we were able to select either a Sonoma (Western) or Japanese style, or even both. We also opted for the in-room shabu and selected the Hokkaido Seafood pot which was amazing. It was priced at $250/person though, but hey, that's to be expected at SingleThread right? All in all, we enjoyed it here but wouldn't say it 1000% justified our taste palette for the value. But I'd come again, if the opportunity presented itself. I totally get the hype about SingleThread because my boyfriend and I fell in love with this place. There's bougie and then bougie BOUGIE, which is what SingleThread was. It's a place to go if you have something to celebrate and want to eat with your eyes as well as taste buds. My bf was able to snag a rezzy here for us to celebrate our 10-year anniversary, and we were hoping it wouldn't be overhyped and gimmicky (spoiler alert, it wasn't). We've been to 1 and 2-star restaurants, but this would be our first 3-star, and let's just say, we were WOW-ed! These were some things that stood out and really had us enjoying our experience: - someone was outside and greeted us by name...say what?!!? - you're offered a nice little tea while you're getting settled (this is all before you're brought to your table) - we had an amazing view of the kitchen and the floral centerpiece was gorgeous. it was SO gorgeous that we didn't even realize it had plates on it and was our first course - so many dishes had us saying "this is so pretty" "this is my fave dish" "i could eat this all day" - they matched our pacing instead of batching tables altogether because we do eat quicker than others We would 100% come back the next time we have something big to celebrate! read more

Well, where to start. This place is expensive. As a birthday celebration it was, of course, a wonderful gift. Something truly different that I would not normally do. That being said, I think our experience was not a great one. As someone that normally would not dine at this type of establishment on a regular basis location and would so as a celebratory thing-- I would have expected a higher level of attention. I do wonder whether they profile those coming into the restaurant which then reflects on the type of service one receives. I am a vegetarian, we noted this in the reservation note and upon arrival mentioned this again and long story short, I was served meat, and while my partner has been waiting patiently for his wagu, we had to wait for them to create a non-meat option for me it just kind of ruined the course experience for us. The food is quite interesting. Some of the courses were a little laughable, such as the tomato sorbet. Best part of the meal was the first course with all the little bites, served on a log and the last savory course, which was the most basic one the rice with mushrooms. The ambiance is a little sterile, and because we had a later reservation we did not get to take the iconic pic in the kitchen. I think staff should make it a point to offer it before they close the doors. We added the reverse wine pairing, was definitely not impressed and didn't like most of the selections- also mostly French. Too many good options in the area to return again. read more

Highlights included the duclair duck, which was genuinely a statement dish: deep, savory, and plated with the elegance of a masterclass. Japanese dishes anchored in tradition, but executed with modern finesse. Seasonal ingredients from their own farm just minutes away. And yes, caviar. But handled with restraint. This wasn't showy. It was sincere. But what I didn't expect was how seamlessly that same ethos of care carried through the entire stay. The inn isn't just a place to sleep; it's a continuation of the philosophy behind the restaurant. The inn offers only five suites, and yet the experience feels grand--like you're the only guest in the world who matters. From the rooftop garden to the smart in-room details (the matcha-grinding machine and Aesop products were especially appreciated), everything felt like it was designed to anticipate and support your comfort. We woke up to soufflé pancakes, soft scrambled eggs with caviar, and the best heirloom tomato toast we've ever had. There was Koshihikari pesto rice under sunflower seed furikake, perfectly grilled saba, and fresh rhubarb jam paired with honey biscuits. Omg I don't know why this restaurant got 3 Michelin stars. It was a big hype that fell flat. Food had so much cream on many of the dishes (e.g uni, oysters and tamago had cream on it.). Appetizer was served before the Somalier visited our table to take drink orders. The service was stiff and felt unnatural. $50 for a glass of wine! The up charge was ridiculous! The server kept taking away my food before I could finish it. Usually server should ask if you are done first before the plates gets taken away. The whole thing felt rushed. Restaurant was very dark and hard to see what you're even eating. Food was pretty and decorative, but taste was whatever. The only dish I enjoyed was the duck, crab soup and the snapper. I love the rare wines pairing 1979!. The bed is so soft but at this age with several decades of life, would like the bed to be firm. Despite being a Michelin 3-star restaurant, the Japanese-American style dishes didn't quite live up to the hype. Service-wise, there's nothing to complain about, it was flawless. But I couldn't quite understand why they gave us the menu at the very end. Anyway, the first presentation dishes were visually stunning and elaborate, but because it was pre-set, the oyster wasn't cold enough. I appreciated that they have their own farm and offered a variety of vegetables, but throughout the course (even considering the season), there was an overwhelming amount of tomato. At some point, it almost felt like a vegetarian menu with just a bit of meat and seafood thrown in. The worst dish was the wagyu served over rice with pickled carrot. There was like a green thing inside the wagyu, becuase of that, it became overwhelmingly greasy toward the end. The desserts didn't really stand out for me. Too much berry focused desserts. I wanted to have some sweet desserts at the end. Overall, the service was excellent, but the food didn't match my expectations for a Michelin 3-star level experience. Unfortunately, we were told guests can only access the property about 45 minutes prior to their reservation, so we ended up hanging out across the street, where we chatted with some amazing locals. In the end, it just added to the charm of the town and the evening. The service throughout was graceful, attentive, and seamless. With it being a 3 star restaurant, it didn't feel stuffy. It was approachable and inviting. We laughed so much with our waiter. The open kitchen gave us a fascinating look into the calm, focused energy behind each plate. It was like watching a well-choreographed ballet in chef whites. If you're thinking about going -- just go. This place is the real deal, and worth every moment (and every penny - it was not cheap, but there is so much value for the whole experience) It's not just a restaurant, it's a full-on experience. The welcome card was also such a nice touch to start the evening, with a personalized signed copy of the menu to close it out. It's been a few years since I've been to a Michelin stared restaurant. The beginning was an exceptional experience. We were greeted outside the restaurant before we even walked in. Sipped some tea on the counter by their open kitchen. Really blown away and confused when we got to our table. There was like 10 dishes already plated on top of this moss wood in the middle of our table. I'm like ahh... is this our whole meal at once? LOL Luckily that was just the appetizer and there were 9 more dishes to go. The presentation is top notched. 10/10 for that, the food, the plating, the silverware, they changed with each dish. Food was fantastic, it's always a marvel seeing how they blend these different ingredients that I never actively eat. Majority tasted great, of course it's 100% in line with your tasting preference when it's a preset meal. But I would say probably only 3 outta 10 didn't hit the mark with me. Service was decent. At first the pacing of the food was spot on, midway through the dishes started taking a lot longer to arrive. Then we felt slightly rushed on the way out. I would still definitely recommend SingleThread for the experience. I assure you this is one of those Michelin restaurants that you will not need to go to a fast food joint later because you weren't full from the portion sized being too little and not fed enough.
