Food truck Friday in Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii... Ko'olau Night Market happens on the second Friday of the month. It's too bad that November 8, 2024 was the last event for the year. Simply Ono (food truck) happened to be at the Windward Mall parking lot. I read a review stating that Simply Ono had been in Mililani. Wow! I'm so happy that it was on the Windward side where there's lots of free parking! I ordered the Prime Rib plate for $22.50 (including tax). It was juicy and tender! Celebrating the first day of Fall... Found this truck at the Mililani Town Association Autumn Festival Craft Fair at Recreation 5 and what a lovely setting to celebrate the first day of fall...I should've started here first before exploring into the craft area as I heard but didn't realize the massive portions they dish out. On the menu tonight is Prime Rib, Rack of Lamb, Okinawan Shoyu Pork, Furikake Crusted Island Mahimahi and what I got is Beef Stroganoff over pasta and Garlic Bread and I got the last order for the night yeah!!! One reason I should've eaten first, there was much more seating and now the obvious the massive portion given...I could've walked it off and not fall into the lurking food coma. These delightful couple working hard non stop filled the container to the most ultimate brim that I've never seen anywhere else...and to think there's pasta under the coating of Beef Stroganoff was quite overwhelming but I did give it the Simply Ono try. I was just looking for a small bite to eat for dinner, as I had a large lunch and wasn't too hungry. So I headed to the Hawaii Kai Farmers Market at Kaiser High School on a Tuesday. They're open from 4-6pm. Simply Ono was one of the food trucks there, and as I browsed the menu, I spotted the Salad Nicoise (Mahimahi, capers, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, green beans) for $8.00. I've had this salad before on the mainland and it's delicious, so I thought I'd give it a try. The salad did not actually have any green salad, like previous ones that I've had. This was much more heartier, with chunks of mahi-mahi, cubed potatoes, green beans, etc. It was very delicious! It came in a bento container along with a taro roll, which was also very yummy. It was the perfect amount of food for me. I had read that it's a mother and son team. They were both extremely friendly and the guy was hilarious! 3 words: Okinawan Shoyu Pork ($16)! Every last Wednesday of the month, Pearl Country Club has a night market and this food truck is always there. I've come here twice now and have gotten the same thing. The pork is tender, falls apart and has such good flavor. Portion wise, I do wish they gave a little more because I can eat the whole plate in one sitting. (Hehe) I love the Japanese potato salad as well. Potato salad isn't something you find at many places since mac salad is so popular here so I'm so glad I can get my potato fix here! My mom has gotten their corn chowder with garlic bread ($7) and she's loved it! It's nice and chunky with tons of corn. The garlic bread is a nice added touch to dip and eat. The couple that runs the food truck is always so sweet. You can tell they put love and care into their food. The wife individually wraps each fork with a napkin and a twist tie. The husband makes the food and serves the food. They're always so nice & happy to serve you. If corn chowder or shoyu pork isn't your thing, they're also known for their prime rib! Man, am I still glad to see that the Simply Ono food truck is still around. My first introduction to Simply Ono was when I used to attend Honolulu Community College in the mid 2010s. I was reminded of Simply Ono's existence when I attended the most recent Kakaako Night Market (6/8/24). Me and my friends ordered prime rib plates ($20) and furikake crusted shutome ($15). We each opted for garlic rice (instead of white) and potato salad (other options: toss, orzo). All of our food was delicious and generously portioned! I placed an order at their truck and stood back in the shade. When my order was ready the guy was looking for me, so I stepped forward and raised my left hand to let him know it was mine. As he handed me my order, he said "next time don't use your left hand k, you're gonna get smacked next time k". I was so taken aback that all I could muster was a confused "ok?" I don't know if he was having an off day or if this is just what he's like, but his comment was completely uncalled for towards someone who was just trying to get his attention. Located near the John A Burns School of Medicine I had the Hawaiian plate #2 and my wife had the Ahi patties. I have to concur with my wife the ahi was a bit spicy. My plate which consisted of lau lau, lomi lomi salmon, beef. stew, kalua pig and rice. The all items except the lau lau is of average taste. The lau lau is deserving of a four star rating. I never knew that the John A. Burns Medical School had a public cafeteria until I was invited to lunch. It's on the ground level and quite spacious with two eateries, one being Simply Ono. There's a lot of public parking, metered. They have a rotating menu so check out their website for daily specials. They have a variety of plate lunches from fish dishes to sandwiches and soups. I tried their seared ahi with a wasabi sesame sauce, served with rice and green salad. I was impressed with the amount of fish for $9.50. It was really fresh and nicely sliced pieces of ahi. I also had the brie and pear sandwich, which came on wheat bread for $4.50. I could have made this at home to be honest but it was still dang yummy. They had a perfected ratio of ooey gooey brie cheese to bread. A few more slices of pear would have been nice, but it was simply ono. Overall, I was more than satisfied with our food choices. I will say, I think most of their items are made ahead and re-warmed when ordered. But that does make the process speedy. Service was ok, you basically counter order. Since Corona virus is happening and cant dine in the restaurants till maybe april I needed to leave the house for awhile so I saw this lunchwagon on yelp as well as frolic hawaii website so decided to check them out if they give alot for the price the owners are friendly and polite. I had the ahi patties with ponzu sauce mac salad and rice and my husband had the Hawn plate #2. Had beef stew laulau,lomi salmon, and kalua pig and rice. The patties were a little spicy but I could handle it. The beef stew I tasted it was good ask my husband how was the rest of the food he said the lomi salmon could have a little more salt but other than that was good. Crunchy crust mixed with tender steak on the inside...even my co-workers were raving about it and wanting to get another plate of their own of it! 3. SERVICE It's a food truck - no long conversations here, but the service was nice, fast, no unneeded upselling, and as I mentioned, takes credit card unlike some (who carries cash these days?!). 4. Attended the Eat the Street event last Friday. The theme was luau in conjunction with the 125th anniversary of Kamehameha Schools. Since the theme was luau, I was really looking forward to getting some Hawaiian food. I was kind of finding that theme lost in many of the vendors at the event. But then I found Simply Ono which has several lunchwagons across Honolulu. Specifically, downtown Honolulu and the University of Hawaii. This lunchwagon is an old school truck unlike the social media era trucks which focus on a specialty. Simply Ono is a great spot in which you can find a large selection of dishes of different cuisines reflecting the culture of Hawaii. Hence, you will find American, Chinese, Filipino, Hawaiian and Japanese dishes available here. Though you will want to look on the daily/weekly calendar on their website to see what they are serving on a certain day as it changes daily. Since the theme was luau, the selections at Simply Ono were Hawaiian. I saw a number of tempting dishes including a bread pudding and a full Hawaiian plate, but I decided to get the kalua pork with rice ($5). It was a mini portion that was just the right size for a event like this in which you want to try many things. The kalua pork was flavorful and moist. There is a little fattiness to the pork which just makes the rice taste better. This is the type of food that I ache for here in Seattle. It just doesn't taste as good as in Hawaii. They must rove, because although this specific post states that they're at UH, as I walked down punchbowl street, I saw a blue truck parked right next to the library, and wouldn't have known that it was the Simply Ono truck until I saw their logo on the back of the woman's shirt! I had to order it today because I know they will have a ridiculously long line at the truck food rally this friday night, and I'm so glad I ordered! Seared Ahi - 4 star - for $7.50, the ahi was very fresh, but cold because they have to keep it refrigerated. Their soy sauce with a tinge of wasabi blended very well with the ahi. There's a choice of brown, white or garlic rice. I wanted to eat more healthy, so I ordered the brown rice, which was a little hard, but made a healthier meal. I am still on my quest to find out who makes good mac salad. However, the mac salad was ok, but the mac noodles were a litlte hard and there was too much mayonnaise - though I'm very very picky when it comes to mac salad and certain other foods - as the hunt goes on. I was going to order the prime rib, but being such a heavy meal, I'll have to save that for dinner at the lunch truck rally, if they don't have a long line. Haven't eaten here since Eat Da Street at Restaurant Row. Their Seared Ahi is just as good as before. Its served with an oil/Shoyu sauce on the side. I called her to be a part of our event last minute and she agreed, even though it may not have been a show stopping crowd for her like she's used to, we were glad she and her Simply Ono food truck was there to feed the hungry patrons. My coworker had been hinting at eating here for a while now and we finally took the time to drive out there for lunch. HINT: If you can find street parking on Ilalo Street right in front of JABSOM, do that. You just park there and go into the campus and it's on your left. Unmarked from that side but it's a little cafeteria looking (high end). The other side has a sign that says "Cafe Waiola" which is what threw me off. I was so excited to try the Shoyu Pork. Order completes pretty quickly, food is pre-made and just plated at order. Perfect for them to-be-doctors! Looking at my plate, I couldn't have been happier to dig in. Shoyu pork looked DELICIOUS! Choose between white or brown rice, toss/potato/mac salad. Some parts of the pork was a little tough, have to say it's probably because it was over-cooked from sitting too long (understandable) and overall it was really very tasty. SO GOOOD!!! I started checking this place out after seeing a shared post on Facebook about their menu for an event at Radford High School (Foodie Fest?) It seemed so reasonable that I decided to go check it out. I loved the food so much that I have gone back when I have seen them at the same event and have also gone on my lunch break to their wagon in front of the UH Medical School. (They told me to check their website for their location and menu and this is smart bc they move around) They have gourmet dishes and local dishes AND gourmet twists on local dishes! If you haven't gotten the Prime Rib, this is a must!! It's so tasty and tender and it's only $16! I have also had Rack of Lamb. This was also under $20 and super delicious! Oh and how could I forget about their Lobster Roll?! I want to say this was $16...? Their Shoyu Pork is glazed and juicy and ran $12.50. This review would be incomplete if I didn't mention that the portion sizes are seriously generous! Many dishes come with macaroni or green salad and sometimes you can have garlic rice instead of white rice. Garlic rice is yummy!! Aunty and Uncle are very nice and fun people too! After six weeks of passing by this place before class I was finally able to try it. Now that summer school is almost over, I'm quite sad I won't see it around anymore. Located right across the street from the School of Law library, and right before the John Young art museum is where it's at. First time, only got a bowl of soup, corn chowder (3.50 small bowl, $5.00 large bowl), I liked it. Not too heavy on the creaminess, and not too watery either. It was a bit different, has carrots inside, not something I'm use too... Next time, seared ahi with wasabi aioli ($7.50). Their ahi is very fresh, and it is seared the way I like it (slightly cooked on the outside, raw on the inside), and it isn't dry either. You can definitely taste the shoyu/wasabi sauce it's kept in. It isn't too overpowering either, so you'll still taste be able to taste the ahi. It also comes with either white or brown rice, along with either toss or mac salad. It's about time I wrote a review for Simply Ono. I've been enjoying their selections for years, first when I worked at UH Manoa, and now in Kakaako at their location in the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). Please note: The food is delivered here in a truck; however, you go into the cafeteria (called Cafe Waiola) at JABSOM to get your food. Anyone can go into JABSOM. There is a security guard who may ask where you are going, but that is for the sake of safety. The cafeteria is in the Medical Education Building (MEB), toward the back right on the ground floor, if you are looking at MEB from Ilalo Street. Enter through the main doors off of Ilalo Street, or walk around back. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. "Simply Ono" is an apt description. This is simple, fresh, yummy comfort food that hits the spot. The portions are large. I got the roast turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, salad and cranberry sauce with gravy today. The regular size is $9.50 with a smaller size for $8.50. I eat my largest meal at lunch, but even I couldn't finish the regular size. It would make two meals for some people or may be enough for two people to share. There was a mound of mashed potatoes the size of the Big Island, topped with four generous slices of turkey, a scoop of dressing on the side and a small salad. (Just iceberg lettuce, though.) I've also had the BBQ pulled pork sandwich, homemade corn chowder, hamburger curry, and I can't even remember what else. Nothing is over-salted but everything is flavorful. The staff members at all sites are helpful in accommodating dietary needs. For example, most of the time I forgo rice or potatoes or other starches. They will substitute tossed salad instead at no extra cost. I really appreciate that. Some places freak out when you ask for this, while others will do so, but charge extra. They do breakfast and lunch each weekday. The coffee bar is open 7 am - 3 pm. Breakfast is 7 am - 10:30 am and lunch goes from 10:30 am - 1:30 pm. You can view the daily menu by visiting http://www.simplyono.com/Menu.html. Parking can be a challenge. There's free parking on Coral Street, if you can find it. There's metered parking on Ilalo and Keawe Streets, or pay parking in Lot C (enter from Ilalo Street and follow the instructions on the payment machine). The 19, 20, 42, 55, 56, 57, and 57A buses stop at Ala Moana and Coral; you'll have to walk a block makai (toward the ocean) to get to JABSOM. I recently discovered that an express bus goes down Ilalo Street. I couldn't see the number. Only problem with express buses is that they make so few trips - usually only one or two trips in the morning coming into town, and one or two trips in the evening heading out of town. read more

Previously, as a college student, I did not have many suitable places to eat. Sure, you could walk across campus to Paradise Palms and get something from the slew of selections they have there. You could also get something from the Campus Center's cafeteria's heavily overpriced food. However I like to spend my money on value (big portion at value price). That having been said, when you want a big portion of onolicious, local Hawaiian food to eat, this place is where you need to hit up! Food: The menu changes changes every day with Friday containing an addition of whatever's left over during the week. Every day this food truck changes what they have for fish, poultry, and pork/beef dishes. Check the menu online to check whether they have what you like that day! I love Thursdays and Fridays. Thursdays is turkey day with mashed potatoes, stuffing, and turkey. Fridays are full of Hawaiian style plates from laulau and kalua pig to spicy poke and chicken long rice. Yum! The service is friendly, fast, and efficient. Generous portions are given and the server is always able to recommended a dish; even when its busy. Filipino plate (pork adobo + gisantes) at the UH med school's Cafe Waiola was barely edible due to too much vinegar & too many peppercorns. plus, i had a pool of oil or liquefied fat in my food container -- healthy eating means ingesting little or no oil. obviously, quality control doesn't exist here. i would have thrown out this menu choice pronto if i were the eatery's manager or JABSOM's contracting officer who awarded a vendor contract to Simply Ono. expensive Chirashi sushi bowl was another insult: very small bowl & refrigerated till you order it (sushi's meant to be eaten at room temperature). the counter gal was a visual assault with tattoos on both arms & on her throat area. couldn't help but wonder "what tribe is she from?" reminded me of harpooner Queequeg in the movie version of Moby Dick. it'd be OK if she worked in the kitchen. no paper receipt for credit card/Square purchasers. the dining room is split into two vendors & figuring out the set-up was not quickly obvious to me (or anyone). the Olena vendor had watery chicken curry & its Vietnamese banh mi was another insult: bread from Sam's Club it seemed (not French roll) with little/no lemongrass taste & the worst: gamey tasting dark chicken meat! ugh -- can i give no stars rather than 1 star? again, no quality control; but alas, it's gov't. (or gov't. contract award) & "they're trying their best." but the dining room is spacious & there's outside tables looking out on the green space between JABSOM & its neighbor, that scandalous & shameful & typical gov't. creation, UH's Cancer Center. bringing in your own food would be a good option & get free ice & cups & condiments. read more

Today was my first visit to "Simply Ono" and it was very ONO! The owners Harris and Cora are so friendly and funny. Everything on the menu looked delicious. We wanted the Lasagna, but they sold out. Must be good, got to get there earlier next time. I went for some comfort food, Chicken Nishime. The portion was very generous and very tasty, just like grandma's. It came with a choice of white rice, brown rice or Garlic Rice. I got the white rice and Potato salad. My friend got the Furikake Ahi, which was seasoned and cooked to perfection. They've gone downhill, and seem to be gaining speed. While they still occasionally attempt more ambitious offerings, their execution rarely matches their ambition. They also only offer old favorites, such as the seared ahi (one of the few dishes I might still risk), but rarely now. Even routine standards like hamburger steak are more reminiscent of the salisbury steak from a bad tv dinner. Think rubber slipper, boiled until spongey soft; its strangely non-beef flavor mostly masked by a copious pool of gravy which seems to be primarily comprised of the ingredients salt, gelatinous thickener, and brown. This was the worst experience I've ever had with a food truck. They were at the Waikiki Aquarium's final Kani O Ke Kai concert and when I got in line, it was about 15 people deep. It took 25 minutes to get to the counter. All I wanted was a piece of banana bread and a piece of bread pudding. After making the order, it took another 25 minutes to get my food. When people in line started complaining loud enough for the truck people to hear, their response was not an apology, it was a statement that they were going in order. Sure, they had to put together the entrees, that takes time. But they weren't making the desserts on site - did I really need to wait 25 minutes for it? This place lives up to its name...Simply 'Ono! My co-workers and I look forward to the days their food truck is here at work. Pastele stew, gandule rice, winner. Prime rib, with REAL mash potatoes, au jus and horseradish is a must. Still have yet to try some staples that I have heard are good--baked spaghetti and beef stroganoff. The two ladies who work the truck are always friendly and accommodating...we tell them what we like, what to bring back, and they actually listen! Located at the front of the campus on the way up from the parking structure and school, this lunch wagon has some hits and a few misses. I've tried almost everything on the menu and really appreciate the herb chicken, seared ahi, corn chowder. Portions are decent to generous depending on the worker. Credit cards are ok (one of the first food options to take credit cards if I remember correctly). Whats preventing a higher rating than 3 stars? I recently found hair in my soup on one occasion and also the fact that the lady who works there ranges from being not nice to extremely rude. I know she's trying to run an efficient operation but showing some professionalism will go a long way.
