This place in aktion, nice family awesome service ...... Well worth the trip to Kalhi

Hawaiian chop steak made with ribeye. Very good.

I enjoy finding new places to eat for lunch and I'm glad I found this cute little lunch wagon located right across the Kapalama post office in Kalihi. So I came here on two separate occasions at a little after 1pm. On my first visit I ordered the hawaiian chop steak which I really enjoyed. I'm glad I was able to try it at a discounted price during their Super Bowl special cause now I know I would definitely buy it again at their regular price. They use ribeye steak so it was really tender, not chewy and hard to swallow like the ones they serve at other fast food places. Not many places use ribeye for their chop steak. I love the flavors and the steak and veggies were cooked just right, not over cooked. On my second visit I knew I wanted to try their steak and shrimp plate. So I called in my order and the lady asked how I wanted my steak done so I said medium rare. I arrived in about 10 minutes and they had just finished packing it. When I opened my plate I was kind of disappointed cause the steak was more like well done. But again, they use ribeye so it wasn't too bad. It was a little dry but still easy to chew and swallow and the seasoning was just right. The garlic shrimp was flavorful, not overcooked, and I appreciate that it was already peeled, which is my personal preference. It comes with 6 good size pieces. Most places give 4 or 5 with a steak combo. So overall this plate was still decent enough. I would order it again but hope that next time the steak is cooked to my liking. I'm sure I'll have more visits here. I really want to try their pot roast pork, hamburger steak, and fried chicken! And FYI cash only. Very friendly staff!

There was tons of parking out front so we were glad! It's a cute little shop and I really like the door to go inside. We ordered the strawberry and salted lemon shaved ice #4 and it came with pineapple and strawberries. We also added ice cream so the total came out to $19 and something cents. Without ice cream would've been around $15. I think it was worth it! It was our first time trying and I'm not sure if it was the owner but I feel like she recognizes her customers because she asked if it's our first time since she's never seen us before hahaha!! The person taking our order was so sweet she explained everything to us and was easy to understand. 10/10 would come back and recommend. I wanna try the pickled mango so I'll definitely be back!

The interior is pretty tight, with a narrow walkway between the seating areas. When we visited, almost every seat was occupied, so we had to make our way to the far end and squeeze past other customers to find a place to sit. There was also an area marked for employees only (at what would have been the front door) and boxes were stacked in front of part of the bench seating, which made the space feel a bit cramped. The menu is very limited, with eight bowl options, all priced at $14.99 and no sign of a standard type shave ice. The portion is large and includes fresh fruit, but there is not a children's size or a smaller, lower-priced option available. If you are looking for a traditional shave ice shop with lots of syrup flavors and the ability to customize a simple shave ice, this probably is not the place for you. We ordered what was essentially the plainest shave ice available, just ice with two flavors, and it was still charged at the same price as the specialty bowls. There was not an option for a basic shave ice on the menu, we had to ask for that (since my son doesn't eat all the extra stuff and only wanted plain strawberry banana flavors) and the flavor selection was fairly limited overall. They were also out of a couple of flavors during our visit, despite already having a relatively small selection (around a dozen total). I also found the ice was not as finely shaved as I expected, and the flavors left an aftertaste. While the portions are bigger (served in a bowl), the price felt high for something that melts quickly. Adding ice cream costs extra, bringing the total close to $20 for a single shave ice. One small thing that stood out to me is that they refer to it as "shaved ice" rather than "shave ice." Visitors may not notice the difference, but in Hawaii, "shave ice" is the traditional local term and part of the culture, so the wording felt a little out of place - and definitely didn't seem local (Everyone we saw seemed to be either a tourist or military). That said, the employees were genuinely friendly, and the shop itself is cute. It may appeal to those looking for specialty fruit-forward creations, but it was not quite what I was expecting from a traditional Hawaii-style shave ice experience, especially given the price point. I did like that they had a little treasure chest for kids to pick a surprise! It was small bubbles but was a fun surprise for my son!

They offer snowthies which they describe as a smoothie and shave milk ice. They are really good! I got the strawberry and mango snowthie. They both are refreshing and seem to have fruit puree. I have also tried their milky tea which is non dairy. It is not quite like milk tea but still has that tea flavor that is pretty strong, it is unique and difficult to describe. The milky tea comes with two toppings of your choice. The boba is tasty but I did find it had a slightly bitter aftertaste. One thing to note is that the snowthies contain whole milk. There are no alternative milk options, so be sure to bring your lactaid! Over all this place makes great drinks for a reasonable price ($6-$8). Overall I would come back for more!

As you can see in one of my photos on this review, they offered a flavor called "Cheezus" which was a cheese ice cream with real cheese-its in it haha! I thought it was pretty unique. Theyll allow you to sample some flavors if youre unsure of its crazy name! The triple scoop sampler comes on a perfect little serving plate. Easy for sharing. Since this ice cream shop is located in chinatown, parking isn't the greatest at times. There is no designated parking for this ice cream shop but you can hopefully find nearby street parking or go to a nearby parking garage. It's easiest if youre just on foot. All in all, definitely an ice cream parlor worth trying out!

I've seen this place packed before with all tables filled and a line. Weekdays in the afternoon might be good timing! The vibe was your average "ice cream" ambiance. I loved the photos so you can see your options. IMO, the menu board lighting was a little weird, I thought when I was taking a photo it was my eyes, then thought it was the lighting from outside, but I think it's lit by bulbs? Idk. LOL. You can still read the menu but at first glance, you will question if it's your vision. LOL. My "mini" Mahalo-halo was perfect! It didn't make me feel that guilty at all. I mean, I'm all about dessert before a meal. In my experience, it is always a challenge to eat Halo halo because it's filled to the top. My strategy: take off the cover (if it's not overspilling: if it is, skip this step), eat some of the ice cream, and take a few sips! That should leave you enough room to mix everything, each scoop you should get a different bite. A long spoon would be best for the larger sizes! Magnolia did not disappoint. I'll be back!!

Standard generous portion for a bingsu location, notably generous for an Ala Moana location. The location itself was free of insects despite being on a ground floor location with sugary desserts everywhere. Meh: The $14 (including 15% tip) dessert tasted too light and ice-like and appeared more translucent (rather than opaque white) than expected, leading me to think the milk was watered down, which may be how the establishment can make up the cost for the portion size while maintaining a spot in Ala Moana, especially given milk prices in Hawai'i, even if you're buying from Costco or direct from farmers. Also, tables were not cleaned after each party departed; that transparent puddle on your table might not be condensation and may instead be drool drops from the toddler who sat there before you. Overall: Good (not outstanding) experience. Knocked off 2 stars for combination of suspected diluted milk + unclean tables.

Another colleague and I jumped at the opportunity to tag along on a Friday early afternoon. Located down Umi Street not too far from neighboring New City Nissan on N King Street, Samurai moved to their current location in 1995 serving Maui style sherbet, popcorn and other local snacks. They also expanded to Samurai Snacks Aiea for an impressive 20+ years before closing its doors in May 2023. We arrived shortly after lunch time where we pondered at the menu wondering what to get. It's not fancy here at Samurai - - the storefront is basic and nothing fancy with a few seats patrons can sit on if they decide to eat their treats on premise. Morale has been low at the office so I decided to get some convenient prepackaged 4oz assorted Samurai cups to cheer up the staff. My colleagues also picked up some bags of buttered popcorn with mochi crunch and furikake for an informal office party to welcome the much needed weekend. Because we were already there, we also got some soft serve cups to cool down before heading back to the office. My colleagues had the classic strawberry and blue vanilla swirl and I selected the mango. My colleagues enjoyed their selection but the mango didn't live up to my expectations. The color was vibrant and enticing but sadly the mango flavor did not come through. Each cup came with a sugar roll cookie that was delicious. After our cold treat we headed back to the office with our surprise for our colleagues where it was a big hit. There were many happy faces standing in line grabbing some popcorn and a 4-oz cup of Samurai. Overall, a much better experience with Samurai that's deserving of an update with higher marks. It has been noted in my books to stick to flavors I'm already aware of and avoid trying new ones for that possible disappointment that often happens to me.
