My wife and I, famished after she donated blood at Tripler, were looking for some good eats at Hickam Air Force Base. We considered the PX Food Court but decided instead to try out one of the various food trucks lined up along Freedom Ave. by Burger King. There were a few choices and we decided to try Indian cuisine from the Mykalki lunch van. According to their website, they just recently set up shop at Hickam so maybe some adjustments were to be expected.
When we placed our order, there were 4 customers ahead of us waiting for their lunch. The lunch plates, if I recall correctly, included Chicken Curry, Chicken Vindaloo, Butter Chicken and sides. Lunch plates came with one or two entrees, a couple pieces of naan bread and some tomato salad with cucumbers and onions. We placed our order for Chicken Vindaloo for me and Chicken Curry for my wife. Both lunch plates were for $9.00 each. I don't recall seeing any drinks available so bring your own.
The wait was rather long (at least 20 minutes - one or two customers decided to leave and not wait for their food due to the long wait times especially if you only had an hour for lunch) as the busy, lone cook frantically took orders, with lunch plates cooked to order. There were two tables with 4-6 chairs each under a canopy for customers. While waiting, we overheard one of the patrons commenting about how the food was OK but was rather soupy. When we finally got our lunch, we saw for ourselves what they meant.
First of all, the chicken entrees were not served over basmati rice or any rice, for that matter...so, yes it was soupy. You pretty much had to use the naan bread to sop up the juices. Flavor-wise, I didn't think there was any separation in flavors between my vindaloo dish and my wife's curry dish...both pretty much tasted the same. The tomato salad was good as was the naan bread...but the entree served without rice was a big fail. I told the cook as much.
A disappointing visit to the Mykalki lunch van at Hickam...placing much doubt to their staying power without a change in their menu and how they prepare and serve their food. Long wait + blah food do not equal a loyal following. read more
