I came across this even on Facebook and Yelp. The list of local vendos piqued interest as I thought…read moreit was a perfect event to get my feet wet with local foods (I moved here 2 weeks ago). It was also conveniently located within 2 miles of the hotel I was staying at. The vendors were arranged in a circular formation with an open field in the middle. This made it easy to move from one vendor to another. The event was reminiscent of a "food fair" held annually in the Caribbean in which local vendors sell locally made foods and handmade products. There was good music, ample parking, a variety of food/drinks/dessert vendors to choose from, and inflatable bumper balls (I think this wasn't an ideal event for these balls because unless you went with a group of people, it would be awkward bouncing strangers). The timeframe for the event was perfect. The sun was setting so it was not unbearably hot. There were benches for if you wanted to sit and eat or plenty of open space in the middle of the vendors for those who brought blankets and lawn chairs. The police had a small presence at the event, which provided a sense of security and they blocked off some roads leading directly to the event, which made it safe to walk about.

The Eat The Street event occupied the entire football field so space was no problem. I've been out…read moreof school for more than a couple of decades now so I've forgotten what it was like walking across a football field. All the huge spotlights cast multiple shadows from you so at one point, I was walking with a freshly bought pot pie from Sweet Revenge and I actually thought someone was following me. I quickly turned guarding my pot pie to only realize it was my own shadow...sigh, I'm such an idiot sometimes. Anyway, this was my first ETS event so was very eager to see all the different foods to try. The line of trucks, with their generators rumbling and owners/workers calling you over to try samples seemed endless. It was actually a bit overwhelming. The 3 of us walked around the entire field 3 times before we each finally decided what we were going to eat. I got a Smoked rib plate from Tin Hut BBQ ($12.00.) The plate comes with 2 sides (I got a double helping of green salad.) The ribs were fall of the bone tender and had a nice grilled flavor, although I didn't get a strong smoky taste. The salad was fairly plain; it was like the type you'd get in a large bag of tossed greens at Costco. The greens were fresh though and they offered 3 different dressings that you served yourself. The favorite thing about Tin Hut is that they have squeeze bottles of BBQ sauce out for customers to use. They had 2 different sauces: one was an apple/chipotle and the other was unmarked. Both were delicious. I'm a saucy kinda guy so I thought that was pure awesomeness. Sorry, I don't remember the names of the trucks that my other two friends visited One of them got a deep fried, shrimp stuffed avocado and a mixed plate of ribs and shrimp. It looked really good and she confirmed that it was "Da Bomb". My other friend went to a thai food truck and had stuffed chicken wings and satay chicken sticks. He said the wings were really good but the chicken sticks were horribly dry. We were all still a bit hungry so decided to split a pot pie from Sweet Revenge. We got the pork guisantes pie and it was fantastic. The top crust was just so buttery and flaky. My only gripe is it's pricey for its size ($7.00). I really wanted to try out more trucks but was pretty stuffed by then. If you come to an Eat The Street event in the future, I'd recommend coming really hungry. ***Oh...and a little side bonus was that I got to meet Yelp! Elite Pualani P and future Elite Darren S. They were manning the Yelp! tent and were both really cool.

The service was easy and fast but just know they only take cash or venmo - no cards! The menu is simple and yet creative because there are so many of their signature sauces to choose from. I got the three mix plate with Firecracker Chicken, 94 Sauce Pork Chops and Cream Meatballs. I also got the 74 South Moko. Everything was delicious. The chicken was crispy and juicy and the pork was tender. The meatballs were a little salty with the sauce, but just eat a lot of rice! The moko isn't a patty, it's just their meatballs. I got one of the sspecials: the Mum Mum Noodles Deluxe; and the Pork Chops with Garlic Kake (garlic Furikake) sauce. Yum! The Mum Mum Noodles Deluxe was topped with easy over eggs, French Fries, and a sweet mayo (?) sauce. I liked the chewy Noodles, but I prefer a more savory sauce - I'm sure I could have asked to change sauce if I knew. Note: Ketchup at home helped a lot! The pork Chops were delicious and tender! Corn was a nice side, along with two scoops of rice. Service was okay. I asked what "Mops" stood for - it's slang for "eating". The cashier made an eating motion... LOL!

I was so happy to have Jackie driving us down to Wai Kai and knowing at the same time there was their usual even every Thursday night which is the Ono Grindz and Makeke at Wai Kai 4p-8p as it's filled with various small biz gathering on the lawn as the sun sets browsing around was just fun and when I finally decided on Hometown BBQ it's because I knew exactly what I wanted. Creating a menu is very difficult and with this market circumstances it can be difficult since there's not a lot of tables and many menus are handwritten with price so I don't have samples of size or plating as I was afraid if I would be able to carry it around without making a mess. Thankfully though here I wanted the Esquites which is basically corn, beans, beef, sour cream and bbq sauce. I asked if it came in a bowl but it was a container so very transportable but very hot as well and large omg which still made it a challenge to carry around. The service here is fast and friendly and as I took a few bites from it it was delicious a tad bit salty for my personal taste but really enjoyed all the layers of flavors it had and didn't expect it to be that enormous. Great to support our small local biz while getting something unique is fun and being in our hometown is the best. Thank you!
