Sae's food truck was at my work today. I was excited to try because there aren't many southern food options in Hawaii. The wait for the food took almost 40 mins. I ordered the mini plate with jerk chicken and Mac and cheese. I spoke to my coworkers that ordered food and some waited 45min to an 1 hour, so if you are on a crunch for time.... I recommend trying something else. A lot of sides were not available and they were out of their ribs. The chicken was delicious. The meat was falling off the bone. The Mac and cheese was okay, the cheese had curdled. I heard their catfish is worth trying. Staff were nice. Food truck was simple, no bells or whistles. I love the food here! I come by often for lunch in the Hickam food court and it hits the spot every time. The jerk chicken: amazing. The sweet potatoes: delicious. The greens: on point. The cheesy grits, the fried okra, the cornbread.... *chefs kiss* I haven't tried a single thing on this menu I didn't love. They occasionally sell out of certain items, but I don't mind, since no matter what you get, it's going to be delicious. read more

Holy crap this place is BOMB. Ono for southern food and the wahiawa place was close. You need military ID to get on. They are located near the PX. My entire plate was Frigging awesome. Ordered a combo plate and the lemonade. The lemonade was so good perfect sweetness and actual berries inside, but I thought the size was too small for the price of $3. About that food. Dang it's so good. Ordered the 2 choice combo with fried chicken and catfish 2 sides and cornbread...greens were awesome! The chicken and catfish super tasty and cooked perfectly. Plate was $19 and could easily feed 2 people. Maybe 3. But that cornbread was the showstopper! I could eat that out of garbage bag it's so darn good. read more

Forgive me up front... I started eating thru it before thinking about taking a picture. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised by the nicely seasoned cabbage, acceptable mac and cheese, and tender juicy jerk chicken. It was so good I came back 30 mins later to get the curry chicken special, and then again for some fries. But it was that good and we had a good laugh about it. Recently I visited HAFB and was lucky enough to run across the Sae's Hot Plates food truck. Southern cuisine is my favorite and they offer many instances of it on their menu. I had the catfish plate and chose Mac and cheese as my side. The menu price was $16 but I ended up paying over $30 for basically a plate of Mac and cheese and 1 catfish (two halves/ fillets). It was rather expensive for the amount of food. Nothing really jumps out about the fish or the Mac but they were solid, but maybe I tried the wrong item. The service was decent and the delicious berry lemonade wasn't even on the menu. The berry lemonade tasted like the koolaid people make in the southern continental United States! It was certainly perfect. If you have time to wait, aren't a penny pincher, don't care for large main portions, and enjoy koolaid, this is your place! I'll go back whenever I see them! Was told 12-15 mins Waited 20mins then went back to windows and was told another 5 minutes. Waited another 10 then was told they was working on it. People who ordered after me received there food. This was on my lunch break and had to go back to work without lunch. I understand they were busy and the chef was injured but just need to be more realistic about time frames because I was told 15 minutes and here it is 40 minutes and I didn't receive any food read more

I really enjoy eating at Sae's Hot Plates. It's located on Schofield Barracks in front of the main and to the right of Class 6. My suggestion is to call ahead and make your order so it's ready when you get there. I always get the catfish plate with grits (double since I like it so much). Comes with cornbread that I'm a big fan of. If I'm feeling extra hungry I sometimes get a side of that. Food is hot and made to order so it might take a little but it's worth the wait. The portions are more than I can finish and that just means I get it eat some left overs later in the day. read more

Yesterday they had us waiting for an hour and a half for our food only to tell us they were offering a refund. They were really slow getting orders out and didn't have the decency to stop taking orders when they were backed up or to at least give us a warning. They were at an event on Schofield and it wasn't that busy maybe 6 people standing in line to order. I purchased 2 plates. Spent $40 and I was disappointed. The only thing I enjoyed was the Mac and cheese. My catfish tasted like it had freezer burn, and the chicken has no taste. I see nothing but good reviews on this food truck that's why I thought it was a good idea to try it. Don't know why or what happen this day but I don't agree with what I read. read more

The chicken is fried to perfection. It really has delicious flavor. You won't be disappointed. You should call in your order if you plan on going between 1130 and 1300. I truly wish there was a rating above 5!!!! I can't speak to the price or even to the service but the food alone deserves at least 8 stars! I was fortunate enough to be apart of a gathering that was catered by Sae's and when I tell you that it was good...if the food was a person, I'd marry it, lol!!! I'm from the South, deep South so getting Soul food from a business in Hawaii tends to be a crapshoot. I have real expectations and Sae's more than exceeded my expectations!!! There was soooo much food and it felt like one of my aunties from back home catered it! We had collard greens, cabbage greens, red beans with sausage, cornbread, yams, mac and Cheese, Mac and Cheese(it was good enough to say it twice!), gravy so flavorful I had to stop myself from drinking it alone, green beans and the star of the show... catfish fillets! I have been to so many restaurants on the island that claim to serve catfish but instead present nuggets moonlighting as catfish... not Sae's! My mouth is watering even as I type this review, lol! The fact that the only review recommended is a measly three stars when there's nine five star reviews not recommended is a disgrace!! This food is amazing and absolutely authentic. I confess, I've only had four things on the menu, catfish, collard greens, cornbread and Mac and cheese, but That's because these four things are so good I don't want to try anything else! This is probably the only place on the island you can get real southern baked Mac and cheese and it is soooooo good. The kind of Mac you can only get at a family barbecue, the kind of Mac that grandmas guard the recipe of fiercer than jewels, absolute fire. The collard greens are absolutely vibrant in their flavor, I'm a pretty good southern cook and I honestly couldn't do any better. The catfish is fried perfectly, with excellent flavor and not too much grease! I will say I prefer less-sweet cornbread, but that's a hotly debated topic in a lot of places and they do their cornbread very well.
