Soooo, it been about four years since I've eaten here. I was super excited about it because I remember how good it was back then. This trip, however, was not exactly bad enough for me to not return, but not good enough for me to come back any time soon. First and foremost, Simply Marie's is a great neighborhood breakfast/brunch spot. Locals appear to love it. When I pulled up, people were seemingly happy eating & enjoying the late morning air. When I came in, I was happy to see that there was available seating. As I scoped the menu, however, I was kind of taken aback at how expensive the items were! Five dollars for a side of bacon and two dollars & change for ONE egg is kind of extreme. The cashier seemed less then enthused to be there. Busing tables, answering the phones, and taking orders probably had something to do with that. After scoping the menu, I ordered the same exact meal I did four years before- pancakes, scrambled eggs with american cheese, and scrapple. When my order was up, I was super excited. Buuuut, that excitement fizzled a little bit when I picked up my fork and discovered someone else's pink lipstick on it. Even the cashier made a face, lol...it wasn't a huge deal, although the fork and knife were already laying on my pancakes (for convenience, I guess?). The scrapple was cut super thin & just wasn't what I expected. The eggs were a little on the loose side, but they were still pretty good. The pancake situation was a little weird. First off, the pancakes were *super* thick and had a faint cornmeal taste to them, which was interesting. I barely got through the first one. There was powered sugar sprinkled on top, which I liked & was used to, from the first trip. However, there was already syrup swirled on the pancakes! (Just think of someone swirling ketchup on your fries. Like, how do they know how much you want?) I thought that was so weird and never experienced that before. I'm not sure if there's a syrup shortage somewhere, but that was different. Anyhoo, the food looked good in the picture I took, but it honestly could've been something I could've made at home for half the price. Maybe next time, I'll order a breakfast sandwich or the biscuits and gravy. Someone ordered both of those on this recent trip & the plates both looked amazing. The food is quite good in this corner stop restaurant. We ordered a veggie omelette and corn beef hash which is making my mouth water. The restaurant has simple tables and bar seats along the window sill so but that's about it. The man behind the corner knocks this rating way down for me. This is a very unassuming place! I came for a solo Sunday late breakfast. When I entered there were two full tables, and two diners sitting at the counter looking out the window. I went to the back where a guy was standing behind the counter of muffins. He pushed a menu towards me. There's also menus on the wall. Basketball was on the TV. I ordered a "Marie's Way" omelette with wheat toast and home fries, crispy, please, plus a glass of water. I sat at the counter facing the wall, not the nicest seat in the house. My food was ready super fast! And it was really good - home cooking! The omelette was tasty and a good sized portion. I asked for strawberry preserves with my toast and that was even better than the usual. The potatoes were my favorite, crispy on the outside and tender inside. Service was fine, I didn't really require anything but the guy who took my order asked me twice during my meal if everything was okay. Price was decent. The only thing I think this place needs is a bit of a scrub (as my view was of a less-than-spotless wall with a grubby switch plate nearby and crusty salt and pepper shakers) and some cosmetic updates. This was the last place I had saved to check out while I was visiting Baltimore. I'm going to be blunt and say that there are NOT enough solid reviews to justify Simply Marie's 4-star rating...even considering the fact that this is more of a local/neighborhood spot and not some high-end or fine-dining experience. I'm all for homey type places that have a personal feel where the owner/cook is friendly/connected with the patrons, but yet and still my experience tells me it's just not all there. Some of the items in the baked goods display looked questionable, and I happened to notice the liquid soap dispenser over the employee sink looked at least 10 years old and had turned color and coagulated (not a plus am I right?) Either way, about the food. The place closes at 1pm and I walked in at about 12:05pm, so I figured that although it was closing soon I could at least order what I had been waiting to get from the menu (which was the chicken and waffles) and get on. I was wrong. Allow me to tell my story: First off, I walked in and the place was empty bar one older woman who was sitting and waiting for her food to finish being made. I kindly said Hello and no one responded. No one was at the register, and I couldn't really see or hear anyone back kitchen working. Excuse my language but in all honesty by this point I was thinking "Okayyy wtf is going on here?" So with my hopes of enjoying Baltimore's take on Chicken and Waffles seemingly grinding to a halt I just sat and waited since the trip waited for service. After about 7 minutes my ideas were confirmed, as Marie walked out and asked what I wanted, and since I had already checked the menu on yelp I was quick with responding "Chicken and waffles please." She quickly nixed that and told me that preparing that particular meal takes 25mins, and that she had to be out by 1 to get to her 2nd job on time so I either needed to come back another time or order something else. Mind you, it was still 12:20 by this point, and while I respect the grind of working multiple jobs...my thought process still tells me that when you advertise certain operation times as a restaurant you honor them. Needless to say I was not impressed. I went ahead and ordered the Sammie Said It omelet, which was basic. The whole trip was a sunk cost by that point so I figured I'd at least try something else instead of schlepping to a whole other restaurant since I was pretty hungry. The meal itself was truthfully not even up to the level of omelet I could make at my own home...or anyone's home if you ask me. The potatoes were too greasy for one thing and probably contained more onions than actual potatoes. The omelet was supposed to come with cheddar cheese, but came with american. It was alright at best...the best part was the bacon. Sad thing is, the best part of my whole meal was the wheat toast with grape jelly. Now THAT was a delicious 30 seconds of eating. So while I doubt anyone will read this whole thing lemme just say that there are many areas of improvement for Simply Marie's to address before I'll decide to go back. Nuff said. read more

First, we came at 12 noon for brunch and we actually needed to "ring the doorbell" so the door will be opened! Delicious chicken and waffles, just be prepared to put up with some attitude, because they don't really want to make you delicious chicken and waffles. As others have mentioned, when you order the best dish on the menu, which you should, you'll be dismissively told it takes 20 mins to prepare. Plan for this; my strategy is to call in a take-out order over the phone. If you live in the neighborhood as I do it is worth dealing with some sass once in a while for the sweet sweet fried chicken and lofty waffle. The chicken is "real" fried chicken, so good, in a different class than what you get at the Delmarva Cafe with the same dish. 3/19/16: Starved for food after a rigorous boot camp workout, but looking for something with a more substantial food menu than a coffee shop, I stumbled upon Simply Marie's. I was immediately impressed by the making-the-best-out-of-a-small-space environment. Although clearly little more than a carry out space-wise, Simply Marie's has tried to make the place something you want to come and stay a while in. The walls are lined by counter tops with pretty comfortable stools, and there is 1 round table that a party of 4+ could sit at. It is the only table however, but I appreciate the attempt. Another positive point, I think Marie is actually in the back cooking. So she cares A LOT about whether her patrons are enjoying her food and her restaurant. And the food is substantial. Huge portions. and Tasty (Although a bit too salty for my taste buds). I had their version of a southwest burrito... cheese, salsa, black beans. All well cooked. nice flavors. but i found the seasonings a bit heavy handed. What I didn't enjoy was the lackluster unenthusiastic person taking our orders. When my compadre asked why getting an egg and biscuit as a sandwich was cheaper than getting it a la carte, the clerk treater her as if she was looking for him to give her a free something (which was not the case). I don't understand all the great reviews. I can make a better omelet myself...it wasn't bad but it was pretty flavorless, greasy and a little overcooked. I like when homefries have a few crunchy pieces but these were all soft... they were meh....I never add salt to my food but I did here. I saw a pic of the french toast and since I like real french toast aka pain perdu I decided not to order it because I had a feeling I wouldn't like it. I've been here a couple of times before, and while I have found the food to be salty and the service to be less than friendly, neither was enough to keep me from returning...sometimes you just want breakfast food without getting dressed and going to brunch for real! (For reference, here is the description of my order that is the same on the website and menu: SM 4 That's A Wrap scrambled eggs with your choice of meat and cheese in a soft tortilla with grits or Homefries .........$10.50) I was kind of annoyed at this point, due to the unfriendly service and the fact that it really pisses me off when people try to cheat you, I don't care if it's 10 cents or 10 dollars, it's dishonest. Plus, I specifically asked and you confirm that it includes cheese, then charge me anyway!? So, I asked again. He sighed deeply and agreed to take it off-I'm not sure why charging me the advertised price was portrayed as doing me some kind of favor, but it was. When I finally got home, I was so pleased that my food was still piping hot-generous portion of home fries, so bonus points for that, but unfortunately the home fries were so salty, I found them inedible. I ate my wrap and it was fine, but nothing special. I live in the Canton area, and I am a huge sucker for good bagels. My go to was always Towson Hot Bagels, but after showing up one Saturday morning, the line looked like one from Six Flags- without the 'your wait in line will be a half hour' sign. My girlfriend and I started strolling around the square, peeking into restaurants to see what they offered. But no dice on finding a bagel joint. At one point, she exclaimed, 'I just want a bacon egg and cheese bagel!' And at that moment, a passerby mentioned the delicious bagels Simply Marie's, and how it was just around the corner from where we were. It was love at first bite. Seriously. I don't know what they do to their bagels to make them so delicious, but I was in heaven. I got a plain bagel with cream cheese and my friend got her bacon egg and cheese bagel fix. We ate there this morning and had the best pancakes in Baltimore! They were soft and fluffy but had these magical crispy sweet edges. Eggs Benedict and home fries were delicious too, with hollandaise that tastes truly homemade. We shared both and even with big portions the plates were almost licked clean. Went here for breakfast on a Sunday morning. I ordered the pancakes with two eggs over easy and scrapple. Scrapple is as scrapple does, although the hot sauce on the table provided a new twist on the scrapple. The eggs were huge; probably some of the biggest eggs I have ever been served. They were also perfectly over easy with runny yolks that could be swabbed up with the pancakes. The pancakes were large, too, and delicious. They were fluffy and cooked just right. The other person in the group ordered the French toast, and they were quite happy with it as well. Black coffee was good, not weak. So, they serve the food on styrofoam plate? Big deal. AAAHHHHH LEGIT CHICKEN AND WAFFLES. I could stop there... but I won't! I'm really lucky to have this neighborhood gem a block away from me. It's the most perfect weekend breakfast spot. Don't expect super quick service (unless you call in and pick up) because the food is all made to order from scratch. The portions are as big as your head, so if you can't finish it all for breakfast, set it aside and come back for it at lunch! So far, I've worked my way through the egg breakfast sandwich on a croissant, french toast, eggs benedict (really, really good hollandaise sauce), and a few types of omelettes, all delicious and so massive that it feels like you're carrying a brick back home with you. Location is small and no frills -- it has a few bar stools and counter space to dine in if you choose, but it's best to grab your food and go. The guy behind the counter is always pleasant. My favorite thing about this place is that it doesn't break the bank. You can eat like a king for under $10! If you're really splurging -- and you have the stomach capacity of an army of teenage boys -- grab a massive pastry form the pastry case for an after breakfast dessert! read more

So happy to find this little corner gem. Went today in search of breakfast food at noon and stumbled upon Marie's. Coffee was surprisingly good, and the guy at the front counter was very friendly and welcoming! Sausage gravy over biscuits was AMAZING! I have heard of this place for years and it had quite the name......pretty much unwarranted. I ordered the French toast which came with three eggs over easy and sausage and it was not very good. The French toast had an odd flavor to it and was a little soggy. The eggs were fine but the sausage looked like it was freshly taken out of a package and re-heated in a barrel of grease. I've come here on several occasions over the years. I find the many reviews for such a small even hidden place impressive. While I see most reviews for Simply Marie's are positive, there a few negatives. This is my take and response to some of the negative comments. When you go in to eat at Simply Marie's, the food you are going to eat is prepared by Ms. Marie (at least I presume that her name is Marie, but I never asked!). She is a black female entrepreneur in a predominantly white neighborhood. Her mannerisms probably don't match what some of the patrons are used to. While I find her a little curt and perhaps not the warmest individual I've ever met, I do appreciate her chasing the dream--the dream of running her own business, being her own boss, taking credit and blame for the fruits of her labor. If you've ever been in business for yourself---and I mean, legitmately in business, like Tax ID #, physical location, accountant, and licenses kind-of-in-business for yourself business (not MLM or lemonade stand), you would be able to tell that she earnestly wants you to LOVE the food she makes. I really do appreciate the legitmate effort that she puts into her business. I get the feeling that she reads every review, whether it be on Yelp or elsewhere--and while it's strictly business, I sense she takes it personal--and she should! Being a small business owner in America is brutal! I can tell you that what I enjoy the most and am willing to buy from Miss Marie, is her Biscuits and Gravy. While, I'm a salty food lover, however, even for me, the gravy is on the salty side. I hope to try her Chicken and Waffles one day. The homefries are probably her signature breakfast accompaniment---and her best. I like them a lot and I wish I knew how to make them at home. Pricing for her food is fairly par--I understand that her volume may not be high enough for her to fiscally lower her margins--but I always come in hoping for a greater value. Simply Maries has a small dining area which I find quaint. I never gone when it's been busy--sometimes a one or two other patrons. There has always been room to eat--but on the flip side, generally, it's a take out. Should you come here? Tried out this place in Baltimore just for the hell of it and tbh I'm so undecided about this place. I was not satisfied and I also was not disappointed, if that makes any sense. The chicken was good I should have asked for mine to be cooked longer though. As you all can see I order a lot of chicken and waffles but it was something about Maries waffle that didn't do it for me. It had that country pancake mix taste to it and I was trying my hardest to ignore it. Plus the price was pretty high! I live in the DC area and I've had much better chicken n waffles for less. I will spend $30 on chicken and waffles if they're worth it but sorry Marie your waffles are not worth $19 (Not sorry) Also all the juice bottles had an expiration date of Jan 28, 2018 on them which turned me off as well. If you eat here just get a bottle of water. I will say that i definitely will return to try something else. I love local family owned places like that so I don't mind giving Marie another shot, I just will never order the chicken n waffles again. read more

I was SO excited to see chicken and waffles on the menu, but a little disappointed when I tried them. In fact, my experience here is about evenly split: -No table service and very few tables / seats. +Charming downtown neighborhood with outside seating and friendly passersby. -Chicken wings were underdone, not crispy. +French toast and waffles were heavenly. -Loud, chaotic atmosphere inside (we would have taken our food home if we hadn't scored a table on the sidewalk.) +OPENS at midnight on weekends (they know their clientele!) -Food comes in Styrofoam. Aesthetic and environmental cringe. I guess the bad outweighs the good. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing! I am so in love with Simply Maries. The food, the establishment and Miss Marie herself! She is everyones favorite aunt! This place feels like home to me. Anyone whom ive told about Miss Maries or have taken there fell in love as well. When my boyfriend and I go we both get scrambled eggs (his with cheese), Turkey bacon and home fries w/ toast and we get an order of French toast to split. That French toast is AMAZING!!
