I really wanted to love this place because I think it's so great to have a dedicated gluten free bakery. However the baked goods are pretty meh. I've had many delicious GF baked goods from various coffee shops and bakeries around the cities and these just don't even compare. Flavors are fun and inventive but the taste is just a little cardboard-esque. Definitely not a bakery that a non-GF person would care to visit. I've gotten the Sift muffins from SIMPLS coffee downtown and they always disappoint with the dryness. When visiting the actual bakery I got the sausage egg and cheese muffin which had an actual hard boiled egg inside - kind of weird but kind of fun? I also got a chocolate donut and tossed it after one bite because it just wasn't worth it. I'd recommend the muffin from Bellacour or the cake donuts from Angel Food Bakery if you are looking for a GF treat instead! read more

I love this place. We don't eat gluten free, but do avoid peanuts because of my son's peanut allergy and what a delight to find a bakery that it allergy-aware! They do not use peanuts, so we ordered freely. I love that all their products are labeled clearly with what allergens they do/don't contain. Also the space is pretty, the people are friendly, the coffee was great, and the baked treats were yummy. Can't complain! We have a party coming up with guests that altogether avoid peanuts, gluten, and dairy, and I'm so excited to get a cake from Sift that everyone can eat! read more

It's hard to avoid GF things tasting GF, but they do a decent job. Focaccia Bar - the one with cheese was good! Zapped it in the microwave and really like it. I would get this one again. Cinnamon Roll - reheated it a bit, it was super moist! I would get this again. Sunbutter bar with almond and berry - this def tasted GF. It was just ok. Coffee Cake (spiced pear) - obviously A GF blend, like bean flour. Couldn't taste anything spice or pear. Honestly tasted like cardboard and was on the dry side. My routine every time I'm in MSP: Pick up bag at baggage claim. Get rental car. Drive to Sift. Everything about this place is adorable. The neighborhood, the bakery, the staff, the TREATS. These are some slam ass goodies, gf or not. A little haiku, because why not? Sift is gluten-free. Don't know what to get yourself? Cinnamon rolls, yo. For real, most gf bakeries won't touch a cinnamon roll... they're too hard to make, and they're usually gross. Not at Sift -- they're great. Also great: the donuts, cupcakes, banana bread, and the focaccia. What's nice about Sift compared to a lot of other gf bakeries is that there are plenty of dairy-free and vegan goodies too! It's decent, the food we had was ok- the cinnamon rolls were hard and the cupcakes were moist but I was disappointed in the limited flavor options- only 3 flavors and they were all holiday themed like peppermint and eggnog. I love that there is a place I can get a nice coffee and a baked treat without worrying about my wife or kids getting glutened. I've always found the staff to be friendly. They've gone as far as to give my son a free treat when they were out of what he wanted. However, I've found that when it comes to baking, you have to pick two out of three - gluten free, healthy (or appearing to be healthy), and tasty. Unfortunately, Sift often falls too far towards the healthy (or appearing to be healthy) to be really tasty. Many of the products are overpoweringly coconut heavy. I know that coconut oil and sugar are probably a little better for me, but I'm also eating a cinnamon roll, so it's of little value. I truly appreciate that they try new things with their ingredients and flavors. I've had a number of delicious things here, but I've also had a few that just weren't worth it. Overall, Sift is an essential if you are celiac or gluten free, and it's still worth a visit if you just love creative baking. read more

Very impressed with this place! I ordered some dinner rolls and a frozen pie shell for my girlfriend, who's gluten and soy free, for Thanksgiving. I had a wonderful conversation with whomever answers their email. They were very patient about answering my questions regarding pie baking as I had never done it. The dinner rolls and pie were AMAZING! The rolls are almost biscuit-like in their aeriness and flakiness. They reheated well and made excellent turkey, american cheese sliders out of leftovers. The pie crust was also awesome! Baked up well using a recipe I found online. Pick up the day before Thanksgiving was fast and friendly! Since I was diagnosed in 2010 with Celiac Disease, I had yet to find a GF doughnut that tastes like a doughnut, and I have tried any GF donut that I have encountered, throughout the US and beyond. I finally ventured to South Minneapolis to sample some goodies from here and was pleasantly surprised to find the best GF doughnuts I've every had! I ate a vanilla doughnut with chocolate icing and it was amazing. I actually felt a pang of sadness once I had finished it, regretful that I didn't buy more than one. I also tried a cinnamon roll, another elusive baked good in the GF world, but was wary that it was vegan as well as GF. As suspected, I was disappointed. Combining GF and Vegan is just too much for me, although I think it's great that people with egg or dairy allergies can also enjoy baked goods from here. If Sift did a non-vegan GF Cinnamon roll I would be overjoyed. I will definitely revisit this spot for doughnuts when I'm in the neighborhood...and by "in the neighborhood" I mean any time I'm within a three mile radius of the place.... read more

I will pick a coffee shop based on whether or not they have Sift donuts and muffins. I nearly teared up when they finally opened their own coffee and bakery shop! It's all delicious. As a person with Celiac Disease, it is such a treat to be able to go out and buy a fresh baked good. I have tried a handful of their items and found them all delicious. It's a great spot to go with a friend (even if they're not celiac). It is also a great place to pick up a special treat for a GF friend- their cupcakes are delicious too. Everything is reasonably priced. There are some things that are difficult to make GF - cinnamon rolls are one of them. Sift's cinnamon rolls are DELICIOUS. In the hunt for a 'healthier' donut, I found Sift. I really like that they label everything clearly and have lots of choices for pastries and drinks. I arrived shortly after they opened on a weekday and wasn't feeling coffee so really glad they also had unique selection of teas. Since I was early, there were a couple things that were still in the oven (cinnamon rolls) so I will need to go back for those. I feel like it might be a fine line of getting there too early and things might not be out and getting there late and being sold out. Not 100% sure but I will return later in the AM to find out. I love gluten and animal-products, yet I still LOVED Sift! Usually busy in the morning, but not wildly packed. We stopped into Sift for our third visit today & really enjoyed it. We had a chocolate donut, cinnamon roll, oat milk latte & cold press. The cold press was very bitter & acidic, but the staff was nice enough to trade it in for an iced oat milk latte, which was super delicious (smooth & creamy with just the right amount of espresso). They are very eco-conscious with compost collection & utensils. Prices are a little higher than a standard bakery, but it's cool they're able to make things delicious with limited ingredients. I've been to Sift a few times to visit the cafe. It's a pleasant space to sit and do work, drink a coffee, and enjoy a pastry. I usually have to skip the pastry part at other places around town - I love Sift for providing the gluten-free baked goods for me! The coffee was good but not memorable. Some of Sift's baked goods were amazing, and some I would not order again. The brownie is amazingly rich and delicious! I am not a doughnut lover but tried their cake doughnuts and really liked them. I was less a fan of the banana bread and the cinnamon roll was too dry for me to enjoy. I'd say be willing to try a few different things before giving up on Sift - they make some delicious treats, even though not all quite hit the mark for me. read more

I ordered a cake for a birthday party where the birthday gal has Celiac disease. They were very attentive to my needs, calling at one point to get clarification. The cake was stunning to look at, chocolate drip on the sides, gold sugar dusted on top and coffee frosting, and a lovely scripted message. Not having the "need" for gluten free food (no celiac or gluten free needs with us, luckily), we tried Sift because they are in our 'hood and we love to support small business. I think it's fair you know this: when reading my review, I am comparing sift to all bakeries. I am NOT basing my review on other gluten free bakeries that I have tried, but all bakeries. My assumption is that they want to be the little bakery that MANY or ALL people choose to buy their breads and treats at, not just the small percentage of people with celiac or other degrees gluten intolerance; I am guessing they want the business of those of us who appreciate little bakeries and patisseries. Thus, my evaluation... Sift is pretty and clean upon entry. The women running this bakery clearly take pride and ownership of her appearance and first impression. Large tables, sturdy and comfortable chairs and stools, and a fresh item display are there upon entry. The music they play, however, makes no sense. Gluten free eaters are predominantly younger, often hipster-ish crowd. The music selection is something my 75 year old mother would appreciate. I wanted to hang out longer and enjoy our coffees, but the music quickly changed my mind. The young woman who greeted us seemed a bit cold. Never a smile or warm greeting, just there to take our order. She had a job to do, and she was there to do it. Nothing more, nothing less. We ordered several different items, in an attempt to "kick the tires" as it was our first time. We sampled a couple muffins, a cookie, a couple of doughnuts, the coffee cake and the cinnamon roll. Flavors for all were admirable, to say the least. One of the muffins, The Hummingbird was clearly under-baked. I don't know if that is deliberate, so not to be dry, but it wasn't desirable at that degree of doneness, either. The cornbread muffin was cooked very nicely, which makes me think the pineapple in the hummingbird muffin may adversely affect their baking time, as it definitely wanted to cook a bit more... The cookie was really good, as was the cinnamon roll and coffee cake. The doughnuts, one of which was vegan, were okay - not memorable as they finish with an odd texture. Of the items we ordered, we did not completely finish one of them. That speaks volumes. I know this: If I were to have gluten intolerance, I would be VERY happy that Sift is there for me. They do elevate gluten free foods. Kudos for that! However, to this point, they are NOT making the notable "traditional" bakeries or patisseries in Minneapolis concerned about their arrival. I often wonder, why can't a bakery do both gluten free and traditional offerings at a high level? It's like making something with gluten is "beneath" them or something... My point is this: I've been a chef for 20 plus years, and I love and appreciate GREAT FOOD more than anyone I know. I want Sift to be so good that I choose them over the other great bakeries found outside of my neighborhood. But at this point, honestly, they are not. read more

I came particularly in search of their chocolate doughnuts, which had been highly recommended. Alas, the word is out - they were already sold out! So folks must love 'em. First of all as soon i walked in I did not even care what the food tasted like because they actually require and enforce masks. I haven't felt comfortable in any public store since the mandate was lifted and I cannot applaud and appreciate enough their willingness to protect immunocompromised people like myself. I am here because Covid made me lose my ability to tolerate gluten despite my best efforts. I am so so sad about it but this place could not do a better job at lifting my spirits today. I love it here. I already ordered Christmas treats and I am so excited. I preordered online (I didn't know they would be requiring masks when I did) because I expected to need to be in and out as soon as possible but I would have been totally comfortable waiting. However there wasn't even a line the service and staff were beyond my expectations. I cannot give them enough praise. Oh and my brownie and cupcake were so yummy today. But again they could have served me any mediocre pastries and I would have been happy. But they didn't!!! Two doughnuts, a pumpkin bar, a scotcheroo, a hot chocolate, a 6oz mostly foam golden milk, a hobby farm soda, and a loaf of plain bread cost $45 plus. The service was unwelcoming and rude. We moved to Minneapolis after living in the same neighborhood as one of the major gluten free bakeries in the US, Mariposa, in Oakland, CA / San Francisco, CA. Put most simply, realizing I needed to forego gluten after serious, chronic inflammatory issues was made much better by living by a GF bakery that had croissants, cookies, doughnuts, danishes, pizza crusts, baguettes, dinner rolls, and so much more. The vast majority were very good and a viable substitute for their gluten-having counterparts. I visited Sift Bakery today for the first time and was totally wowed. This is a smaller operation than Mariposa, but t is not lacking in options. Their moist and cakey doughnuts are well known now for good reason. They are best in class. Delicious with just enough icing, a yummy mocha on this visit, and a bit of that elusive "doughnutty" texture GF folks are often chasing. Today's offerings included mini-quiche, a small and deliciously chewy cinnamon roll, muffins, cookies, sandwich bread, cupcakes and mini-cupcakes, red-velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, and more. The ginger cookies we had were delicious and hit that spot right between soft and crispy. Not quite a snap, but snappy nonetheless. My favorite was a pear cake. The use of the pear was wonderful. No too-hard peely bits or too-soft mushy bits, It was thoughtful and present when the pear could easily just be absorbed into the cake. I believe there was a touch of cardamom as well. What was most clear, is that no one here is "phoning it in" as some folks say about places that are just coasting by. There are many average gluten free menu items and bakeries and this is anything but. What sets Sift apart, besides the friendly, competent staff and the selection, is the high quality of their products. Baking gluten free, scaling the recipes, building a production process, etc. is still exponentially less charted than doing the same for a standard bakery. To make all that happen and offer a super yummy set of products (accompanied by excellent coffee), is no small feat.
