I've had the pleasure of finding this place relatively recently and it has quickly become one of my favorite places for both dine in and take out. Easily 90% of the dishes I've ordered have been fantastic, and the other 10% have been solidly good. The atmosphere is better than the average Chinese restaurant and it's been easy enough to get a table that I selfishly hope that continues. I look forward to eating my way through their menu. A good place for a regular Chinese style food but had was pretty disappointed for not finding it to be Sichuan Style. While the name is Sichuan Style, the food lacked the essence of a Sichuan dish - the peppercorns. Ordered the green onion pancakes, diced chicken with three peppers and Kung Pao chicken. The food was good. But I had taken my friend there to have a good Sichuan food experience, which it lacked. The service was great and the place is good for small as well as large parties. We went on a Tuesday night dinner time and the entire restaurant was empty so I'd say you don't need reservations since the other restaurants in that street are fairly busy during that time. Upon entering, the restaurant was close to empty. There were only two customers. I was with my mother and daughter, was asked where I wanted to sit, I asked to sit by the window. Why not? Well, I was immediately told "no" because they claimed the table was too small and it was only for 2 people. I didn't understand their reasoning, as the tables by the window have 4 chairs. If it's only for 2 people, perhaps there should only be 2 chairs. Whatever. I sat where they wanted us to sit. Shortly after, another family of 3 comes in and they were allowed to sit by the window.. which is where I originally asked to sit. I couldn't help but to wonder why they were allowed but not us? Was it because they were Asian and we are Hispanic? These thoughts are inevitable as there is no other explanation for this. It was extremely upsetting because they weren't treated the same as us. Am I wrong to feel disrespected? The food was ok. They didn't completely understand what I was asking for which was just a communication issue, but the rest was unacceptable in my opinion. As a customer giving them business, if the restaurant is empty, I don't find it a big deal being seated where I ask after THEY OFFERED. Anyway, another thing I noticed that bothered me was someone coming out from the back and dropping hot sauce all over the chairs and floor and making the hostess clean it up. I'm quite shallow. I go by first impressions and make snap decisions without a moment's thought, but don't call me Mr. President. Jamie W. and I have noticed this restaurant many times as we strolled Solano, but I would immediately dismiss it as the blow-up food photos and laminated menu on the exterior looked quite faded from the weather, especially compared to culinary competitors like Kirin and Akemi. The amazing necessarily tired-looking appearance gave way to a much nicer and spacious interior, but it took us months to give it a try and only because I saw Ginger Scallion Organic Chicken as the last item listed under the lengthy chicken section of the menu. They were savvy enough not to call it steamed chicken lest they get a lot of 'ewwws' from less sophisticated diners. While the poultry was tender enough, the sodium content was a bit daunting. Been to this restaurant once before COVID and all I remember was having a positive experience with their dishes, especially their fish. We ordered the mapo tofu w/ pork, chongqing spicy chicken, and Szechuan spicy fish fillet w/ tofu. Large portions although the dishes were on the slightly oily side (but it was fine). My absolute favorite was the chongqing spicy chicken--delicious, the perfect amount of spice, crispy, but it also just melts in your mouth. You have to eat the mapo tofu with rice because it's the perfect combo. The tofu (with the fish dish) is soft and compliments the spicy fish (not super spicy). The menu is strikingly similar to that of China Village which is down the street, although the portions here are much larger. Will definitely order from here again. read more

I had the pleasure of coming here last night with my son and daughter. My daughter had been here a few nights prior and told me how great it was. And it was! We ordered five items: 1. Hot and sour soup 2. Honey Walnut Prawns 3. Ma Po Tofu 4. Spicy charred stirfried lotus root 5. Lychee sizzling rice The Ma Po Tofu is the best I've ever had, not only having the spicy black bean sauce taste to be expected, but it also had some other exceptional flavors that just exploded in my mouth and will make this dish memorable. The spicy charred stir fried Lotus Root was also exceptionally good! It had great flavor, texture and crunch! The Lychee fried Rice with shrimp, water chestnuts, Black fungus, and snow peas was outstanding and had great flavor as well. The service here is exceptional. Several times throughout our meal, the manager and another woman who may be his wife, checked in on us to make sure everything was OK and that we had plenty of water and everything we needed. They were both extremely kind, friendly and hospitable. A glass liter of chilled water was left on the table which is always nice. Everything was done right from the exceptional freshness of the food, the impeccable service, and just the way all the dishes are put together. The chef here obviously knows what he or she is doing and not just for the amazing flavors that are put together perfectly, but also by the way they present everything. Everything about my first experience here was high quality, and I will no doubt be back soon and recommend this excellent place to others. Outstanding! read more

Now that I am aware that I can order quality Szechuan food though Uber Eats, I sort of worry about how lazy I'll get with cooking. Really good, seriously. As soon as we opened the containers, I started drooling from the smell, and afterwards, my mouth was numb, hot, and somehow salty. That's how you know its good. We ordered a bunch of spicy stuff - toothpick lamb, fuqi feipian (listed in the menu as "Szechwan Pepper Beef Trip and Beef Flake"), and the dry cooked beef. Everything was excellent, but I particularly recommend the dry cooked beef. It's delightfully crispy. The spice is definitely there and stronger than the food at say, Chengdu, but it's not overly strong, so I think spice wimps could handle it. Delivery came in a Costco box carrying two trays of food. The portion is very generous. Really enjoyed the grandmas fried fish with tofu dish. Couldn't stop eating until I finished half of the tray. Very juicy tofu with peppery and sweet sauce, and the fish is tender and fresh. Also impressed by the ham in the MaoCai (mixed veg, meat, beef organ hot pot), the texture is extraordinary and it is not so salty. I didn't know that there was an authentic Chinese restaurant in Berkeley until a few days ago. Located in North Berkeley this restaurant has lots of paid street parking. My friends and I ordered the kung pao chicken, the fresh spicy boiled fish, the map where the food, the Szechuan spicy string beans and eggplant, and the spicy sour soup. Picked it up to go, 5 minutes from home. Inedible, and I don't say this lightly. The Mapo tofu was so salty we had to throw it out. The General Tso's chicken was very soggy, the coating was either undercooked or possibly because it was placed on top of steamed broccoli. I have so much love for this place! The people who work here are very friendly, you almost always get an appetizer of Sichuan style "kimchi", and the food is HELLA good. This restaurant isn't far from me and it's been on my list to try for a while. I love spicy food but can't always take it, but I finally got to try it recently. I ordered for the boiled fish and beef stew to be delivered. They were both so yummy! The textures of both proteins were perfect - soft and melts in your mouth. The spice was a great kick and flavor but not overwhelming. There's also some sourness and umami. Both dishes went so well with rice, and I didn't want to stop eating as the sauces start spreading and permeating in the rice. I can't wait to order and try other dishes. Can't quite put my finger on it as to why, but this place falls just short of being excellent and instead lands on being just good. We got: Fu qi fei pian- solid rendition of a Sichuan classic. Water boiled fish- could have used more kick, though fish was very tender Scallion flatbread- this is my guilty pleasure both here and at Wo Jia. Definitely get it. String beans- good, though they neglected to pluck the ends which is a pet peeve of mine. Fatty spicy and sour ribeye- despite the name, the meat was actually a bit too lean compared to how this dish is usually done Spicy fried chicken- excellent Big plate of chicken- noodles were great and obviously handmade. Two of my friends have been raving about Sichuan Style for ages now and finally convinced me to come out to Berkeley to join them there for lunch. It was an afternoon well spent as this has been one of my best Sichuan experiences in the East Bay so far. The food was delicious and the waiter was very friendly, remembering my friends as well as their favorite orders. My friends ordered their favorites- the diced chicken, string beans, and eggplant. We threw in cumin lamb and water boiled fish to make it a complete Sichuan meal and it was deeelish. I can't remember the last time I tore threw everything so quickly. Another friend who joined us struggles with spicy food (everything we ordered has some degree of spice) but was able to quell the flames with orange juice. They also serve coconut milk and I think that helps as well. You'll have a very authentic Sichuan dining experience here as well as good service in a nice area. Definitely worth a visit! read more

11/12/21 Chef Yang Jian you did good. Your food was the best #Szechuan #Sichuan I've had in the past year, and definitely top 3 I've ever had in NorCal. And cuisine aside, this dinner hit the spot better than any other in recent memory. It was that great. 1. Sliced Marinated Beef w/ Spices? (receipt says "Spicy Beef & Tendon") $10.95: This might be the best version of the famous Szechuan appetizer I've had in the last decade. FYI, for those not familiar, you don't go to a Szechuan restaurant and not order this. It should contain heavy numbing peppercorn to prepare your face for the pain (good pain) yet to come. Normally it's some combo of sliced beef, sliced tendon, sliced pig's ear, and/or tripe, but this one's just beef and tendon. I'm not clear if I got the right English menu item right because we ordered it in Chinese, but you should know what this is. Anyway, their version is ABSOLUTELY PACKED WITH FLAVOR. Hell, even the chili flakes are extra crisped and crunch in your mouth, almost like tiny candy crisps!!! The sauce not only is super heavy on numbing, but has the perfect amount of sweetness to accentuate the heat, not take away from it. It's an amazing balance of sweetness to savory that almost no Chinese restaurant gets right as they tend to cater more to Americanized tastes if there is any sweetness, which means... too much sweetness or none at all. I've never had such an intense flavor and texture bomb in this famous dish that I can remember. 10/10 2. Tofu, Choice of: Family Style, Braised $11.95: Okay, this one is more standard. Still perfectly made with a perfect example of Chinese sauce made for tofu/vegetable, but otherwise not too exciting. Btw, for those not familiar with Chinese cooking, this isn't your typical tofu--it's I guess what you can call "higher-end" wrinkly skin pre-fried tofu, almost aged feeling in texture. For the price though, it's a good quantity. 8/10 3. Fried Rice, Choice of: Combo $10.95: AWESOME fried rice. They got some good meat going on here. No skimping on breaded and pan fried pork, and tons of other stuff. If I ain't getting my usual preserved fish fried rice, this would be my next pick. 9/10 4. Mao's Style Braised Pork $14.95: So, my gf said they call it "Mao's" cuz it was famously his favorite dish. Basically braised pork belly, stir fried with garlic and jalapenos. Now, yes, clearly jalapenos is not authentic--Chinese would use red peppers, but it worked. More edible, more vegetable-like, I kinda dig that you can eat everything here and still be happy with stuffing your mouth with everything on your spoon/chopsticks. Perfectly braised pork btw, nicely tender even in the lean parts, and with a sauce that's not too strong. Again, with that perfect sweetness. Just a hint. Just enough to bring out flavors and some heat. 9/10 5. Chongqing 1000 Chili Pepper Chicken $15.95: This might very well be The Best version of this dish I've ever had in my life. Yes, even counting my weekly trips to nearby Szechuan restaurants in Monterey Park and surrounding areas--basically, the best in the world outside of China itself. First off, I've never had chicken so crisp, with a breading so crunchy, at a Szechuan restaurant. And that perfect marriage of heat, spice, salt, and sugar......... holy f. During the two hours, we asked if our food was on the way to which they kept responding "It's coming out soon" or were dismissive of it.
