Decided to try something new, came with a friend and my partner for lunch. This is my first time coming here and trying it all out and I'm quite somewhat impressed. The ambiance of the place was bright, quiet and small. Service was decent just need to be more attentive, get that it is slow but still need to be attentive to check on customers on how the food was tasting, is everything okay, as well if anybody on the table need refills or any sort. Here's what we all had: Beef scallion roll - 10/10 was very tasty Cumin lamb - 8/10 wasn't really spicy Hot and sour soup - 9/10 was good hot and spicy Chicken wing pot - 8/10 was good just to much bell peppers. Yangzhao fried rice - 7/10 didn't really like it didn't know the ingredients that came on it wasn't a fan of the peas as well as the carrots. Secret recipe scallion pancake - 8/10 it wasn't bad. Overall it was an okay experience. But it did make my stomach hurt afterwards as well even if it's been 3-4 hours and you ate something else you still taste their food :/ As well I think they need to check their ice or something cause the water given to us taste weird with the ice as well the coke had different taste when it was from the cup with ice vs it being in the can so most definitely it's the ice that taste weird. read more

I recently had The best sichuan food in San Antonio last month, and decided to yelp search some sichuan places here in Jax. This place popped up while looking so me and the significant other decided to visit on a Friday night after work around 5:30/6pm. This was the perfect time to go bc there was a line at the door when we were finishing up 45 mins to an hour later. That's always a good sign. Clearly people love this place and now I know why! We of course had to try the signature spicy chicken dish (Chongoing spicy chicken). Highly recommend trying if you are one who can handle some heat. I ordered a cup of egg drop soup as a small appetizer, and we also ordered fried rice to share. Giving a 5 star rating solely for the food and server. Upon walking in, the place was bright and clean. The busgirl and waitress was busy cleaning a table for us and it was super clean after they finished! We sat down at the round table (which I appreciate, provides more connection and feels more intimate). There was a group of six of us! Our waitress was super sweet and quick, however, the busgirl wasn't very pleasant. Not sure if she was having a bad day but absolutely no smile from her, even after all "thank yous" from us. The server only gave us waters and didn't offer us any other drinks. I glanced and saw they had other drinks in the clear compartment behind us, but not sure why she didn't even ask. We also looked around and saw that everyone was drinking water so I'm not sure they were also just being polite and not asking about other drinks? Nonetheless, we still had a great time! There was alot of items on the menu and the prices were a little on the pricier side but it's because the portion sizes were HUGE!! Enough to feed 2-3 people! We even had some left for leftovers! All of our food took up the entire table. Even the cold appetizers were huge too! We had the following: Appetizers: Cucumber salad: 10/10 - It was perfectly crunchy, crispy, and super fresh! It's a cold salad and it comes with the chili oil sauce. The sauce itself is not spicy at all and goes so well with the cucumbers. It was tangy, bright, and the pop of juice I had after each bite was amazing. I would absolutely get this again. Pork and cabbage dumplings: 7/10 - I thought it would be pan seared but it was steamed instead. It was filled to the brim with filling and tasted great! Loved all the flavors but wished it was pan fried instead. Not their fault, we didn't ask. It came with chili oil for dipping! Xiao long bao: 9/10 - essentially soup dumplings and they did not skimp on the filing or soup broth here! They were fresh, juicy, plump, and exploded in our mouths as soon as we bit into it. One of the best xiao long baos we've ever tasted! Entrees (came with rice): Mapo tofu: 9.5/10 - We've had many variations of mapo tofu and some were hits or misses. This one was probably one of the best, if not the best, mapo tofu that we've ever had. It came with rice and comes in a huge pot and you can see all the chilis and spices on each and every crevice of the tofu. The tofu was cooked perfectly and had that distinct jiggle. It came with minced beef and beef soaked up all the sauce. The sauce was spicy (but not obnoxiously spicy) and the flavor was indescribable. The broth tasted like (to me) very chili-tomato-ey but it was so delicate and rich at the same time. The balance of the sauce, spice level, and seasonings were perfection. Honey walnut shrimp: 8.5/10 : It came out fresh and hot and the batter still crispy. The batter is more so of the tempura style, not the panko style but it was still pretty great! I do wish the shrimp was a little bit more crispier but that's just my preference. It came with the honey sauce on the side. The honey sauce was sweet and if you had walnut shrimp before, it pairs very well with the shrimp. The dish came with rice, broccoli, and also walnuts. I appreciate the amount of walnuts on this dish as sometimes when I get walnut shrimp from Panda Express, they skimp on the walnuts, but not here! I do like they allow you to dip your shrimp in the sauce yourself because it doesn't get soggy that way. The broccoli was vibrant, green, and super fresh as well. What our other friends got: Orange chicken - I cannot rate this as I did not have this but our friend said it was really good! It looked extremely seasoned, crispy, and had huge chunks of chicken! Chicken with lo mein: 9/10 - My friend ordered this dish and I had a few bites of it and loved it! The noodles were cooked perfectly and you can taste the hint of char from the wok too! It was salted perfectly too! Lo mein can taste really bland if not seasoned properly and here, they do it right! I found myself sneaking bites after bites from her plate hahaha. Beef with peppers: 9/10 - My other friend ordered this and as soon as I put the sliced beef into my mouth, it was a flavor explosion! WOW! The flavors on the beef and veggies were amazing. So much umami flavor and the beef was not overcooked at all! The beef was tender and the flavors (I think soy sauce, sesame oil?, red pepper flakes, etc) worked so beautifully. I'm not a huge beef fan but I would gladly eat all of this in a heartbeat. Overall, we would definitely come back here again! The girl who waits the tables cleaned the floor, cleaned the table, dumped leftover food on plates from other tables into the trash etc using a pair of gloves and then used the same gloves for poking the nose many times when we were there, then used the same pair of gloves to bring our plates and glasses etc. And to top it off she has an attitude that I haven't seen in anyone in a long time. Tables who came in much later than us got their food first - possibly because they are regulars and were asian. Horrible experience in all. Food was really good, so complaints there. What a great meal. We left very satisfied and stuffed. The spicy wotons and dumplings were awesome and a must have every meal at least of those. We shared a huge bowl of Dan Dan noodles soup with nappa cabbage beautifully Flavored broth and ground pork. We also shared the fresh cucumber in spicy chili oil sauce. Sichuan Kitchen is newly opened, occupying same building as the former Season's Dumplings. And if my memory serves me right, Sichuan Kitchen would be the first in the area serving mainly Sichuan dishes. How exciting. So here we go. Walking inside, it was packed. Majority of the patrons (90%) eating were of Chinese decent. They were chatting amongst themselves, happily eating as if they were being fed for free, so I was excited and ready to eat because I too wanted to be one of those happy eaters. So let's get to Sichuan Cuisine 101. First of, pardon my ignorance. I was under the assumption that Sichuan Kitchen and their menu items was just going to be another Chinese/Mandarin type cuisine. Truly it is not. And boy was I wrong. Just looking at their menu alone made me realize that their food is more highly spiced judging from all the "hot chili pepper" symbols rated next to each dish item. Looking further into, it looks like Sichuan (Szechuan) food is world famous for its addictive "spicy-numb flavor profile" and they use alot of the Chili Oil in most of their dishes, as well as Sichuan Peppers and Garlic. Moving on. The Good from what we ordered. Everything below needs no introduction as they were purely delicious. - Braised Beef Noodle Soup (5/5) - Sauteed Vermicelli w/ Minced Pork (5/5) - Beef w/ Pickled Pepper Sauce (5/5) - Braised Eggplant w/ Shredded Pork (5/5) The Whoa: - Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs (2/5): this is a dish that is "served cold" and it even states so on their menu, I really had a tough time enjoying this dish eaten cold. It's like taking a bowl of ribs right out of the refrigerator and eating them cold. So on a random request, we requested the ribs to be heated up. And we were glad we did because it was much tastier eaten warm vs eaten cold. - Kung-Pao Chicken (1/5): Not my most favorite Kung-Pao Chicken dish I've ever had and I believe it had to do with the Sichuan Peppercorns that was chopped and added into the dish. If you are not familiar with Sichuan Peppercorns, it is known to give a flowery taste when chewed but what makes it unique is how it gives your tongue a "numb-like feel" which is part of the side effect. I wasn't really a fan of that Sichuan Peppercorns' taste nor feeling. All in all, I enjoyed my first experience at Sichuan Kitchen. Listen, I have to admit the moment we walked in the restaurant, we were a little taken aback. There really wasn't much atmosphere nor service when we first walked in. The young lady was very shy no words and just basically motioned for us to sit wherever we wanted. First off, of course, we ordered our drinks. My friend and I both ordered a Diet Coke which was served in a can with a plastic cup with minimal ice so we started out being a little leery of the restaurant, but let me tell you the food could not have been better! My friend and I travel for food on occasion, and we decided to hit this local restaurant I heard about on the Facebook page Jax scoops. This really is a hidden gem and I guess you could say not really a hole in the wall, but not the finest of dining establishments either but for me, I could care less about the atmosphere. It's the food I'm after and this place was amazing. I'll post photos of some of the food that we had but honestly, I forgot to take pictures of several of the items because we just were so in love with the food that we forgot to take pics. Anyway, if you're not an atmosphere and service snob give this place a try and I hope you all like it as much as we did. After having mapo tofu in Montana, I was craving here badly in Jax. I've also been wanting to try Sichuan Kitchen for a hot minute. I heard several mixed reviews about this joint, but ultimately had to decide for myself. Of course we ordered the mapo tofu and red chili wontons. I was incredibly disappointed in the total lackluster service here. One would assume if two people are sharing a dish, a second bowl of rice would at least be offered, at the very least bring out a second spoon. The mapo tofu was very flavorful and rich and I kept going back for more until it was all gone. It had the perfect amount of spice, the kind of spice that makes you yearn for more. However it did not pair well with the white rice that was served. The rice was flat out horrible; hard and just plain bad. The red oil wontons looked fantastic and overall they were okay, I wouldn't order it again. I'm not in a rush to go back to this restaurant, but their mapo tofu is the only reason I really came. I would happily order this dish again, I'll just need to make sure I make my own rice to go with it and get it to go. I visited Sichuan Kitchen on a Friday night with my wife and toddler son since my wife was in the mood for authentic Sichuan food, which is difficult to find in Jacksonville, and was quite pleased with the experience. The food is great- I ordered Mongolian beef, which was a huge dish of gently sautéed beef and onions along with freshly cooked, tasty rice. You wouldn't think that fresh rice is a big deal, but it is- I've had plenty of old, crusty rice when visiting Asian restaurants, so fresh, delicious rice was welcome. We ordered shrimp fried rice for my toddler, who eagerly munched down all of the shrimp and a lot of the rice. I tasted the rice, and it too was excellent. Each grain of rice was properly fried and seasoned. A ubiquitous dish, but extremely well-executed. Lastly, my wife ordered a boiled fish soup which she loved. Prices are reasonable, between $12-$19 for most dinners, considering the quality of our food was great and the portions are generous. The restaurant itself is newly remodeled and very clean. Also, the food came out very quickly. The only downside was the service. One server was nice, but she didn't speak much English, while another server seemed disinterested and not very happy to be there (and forgot to provide us with rice until asked). Hopefully, their service will improve and match the quality of the food in the future. If you're looking for delicious Sichuan Chinese food in south Jacksonville, venture to Sichuan Kitchen and enjoy! Born and raised in Brooklyn, I was fortunate enough to enjoy "authentic" Chinese Food on occasion in the earlier days of my life in Chinatown. It was exciting to discover that Jacksonville is home to several highly rated dining establishments along the same style. Anyone who has eaten "authentic" Chinese Food knows there is quite a difference from what they serve in the typical American Chinese Takeout place. Both can be amazing depending on how well the food is prepared, but they are definitely different. And I do realize that what they serve non-Chinese people even at the "authentic" places are probably not exactly 100% true to what they might prepare for themselves, simply because the Western palate might not enjoy that enough to keep a business running. Regardless of the above speculation, Sichuan Kitchen has excellent "authentic" Chinese Food that my family and I thoroughly enjoyed! They are in a strip mall with plenty of parking. The restaurant interior was clean and inviting. The staff was extremely friendly, and even though we didn't understand everything we wanted to say in words, by using gestures together that was readily overcome. In no particular order, we ordered Chongoing Chicken, Spicy Tofu, a dumpling soup, Fish Flavored Eggplant, fried rice, a pork on the bone dish, sesame balls, and spring rolls. The prices were a little high but that is typical everywhere these days, and the portions were very generous. We took home much of what we ordered and enjoyed several more meals the next day and the day after! I did not find the spice level overwhelming. Everything was insanely good. The Chicken and Tofu were lightly battered and fried to a perfect crispy exterior. The flavors were exquisite. I wish I could recall the pork on bone dish, but it had a slightly sweet sauce that came from pineapple. Tender and delicious. Sesame balls were hot and stuffed with sweet filling. Soup broth complex and flavorful, but those dumpling, wow were they good. Spring rolls crunchy and delicious. They did not bring white rice over so I assume you would need to request this separately. And there is an Asian grocery in the same strip mall, so you can go shopping for goodies after eating a very yummy meal. We will be back as soon as we can! You can tell that the ingredients they use are authentic. Clean restaurant and clean bathroom is a deal breaker for me. Sichuan Kitchen is very clean and the bathroom is very clean. The owners are super lovely and hospitable. You can tell that they really care about the quality of their food.
