yes. yes. did you hear me? yes. - from the summery patio, to the chipper waiter, to the first rip & dip of frena bread into the labneh, to the supple chicken, to the last bite of soft serve. - starting off with the frena bread was the start every meal needs. this fluffy pillow of garlic-drenched bread did not even need dip to be enjoyed. the roasted garlic on top served as its own topping. - we got the whole wheat pita too, which went well with the super nutty smooth hummus & the sweet, fig-lined & drizzled labneh. skip the pita & try the specialty breads... or get this to let the dips shine. the labneh was thicker than a block of cream cheese & broken up with the sweet garnishes. - the chicken was cooked astonishingly well. thick chunks of juicy meat with charred, salty skin. top it with a spoonful of their homemade garlic toum & it's even better. - the watermelon feta salad is a simple dish done with a flair. they add a tajin(-like) spice to add a spicy flair that is tamed by the refreshing, light watermelon & salty, savory feta. - the soft serve options are, of course, beautiful. the blueberry sorbet is intense, a fruity blast of bright, cold, light delicacy with a bold blueberry compote at the bottom. the "mic drop" is a nut lover's dream of tahini-based smooth ice cream topped with crunchy nuts. read more

Such a lively and popular Mediterranean spot that my friend recommended. Luckily we had reservations, we I overheard walk-in wait times were over an hour on a Sunday evening. We got an outdoor patio table and I found it quite inconvenient for me to place my purse on the floor since the seats could not hang anything. The dips are where it's at here, so we got the Labneh ($13) and Smoked Artic Char ($14). Of course we had to get some bread to accompany the dips and got the Frena ($13) and Pita ($7). I really wish it came with more bread because this wasn't enough and it's quite pricey for the portion. The frena is definitely one of the best breads, which comes with whole garlic pieces on focaccia-like bread. The pita did get quite hard after awhile, so you need to eat this one fresh. We enjoyed both dips, but the labneh is a must in my book. We also got the Grilled Wings ($21) and Scallops à la Plancha ($30), which were both nicely grilled. The wings were full of spicies and come plentiful, but scallops are a smaller portion. We were pretty stuffed with all the food, but had to end it with the Tahini Softserve ($15). This is a popular item here as almost every table had it. It's creamy with nutty, tart, and sweet flavors. It's also quite the presentation with such a tall swirl topped with halva floss. It's a delicious spot with a fun atmosphere, but on the pricey side. The labneh and soft serve are a must here. read more

I was at this popular Levant restaurant with a group a couple of days ago. The inside was bustling and pretty loud, but not so loud that I had difficulty hearing. Our waitress was friendly and gave us some pretty good recommendations outside of the entrees, as I would avoid ordering the kebabs next time. A couple of us got drinks, and mine was the Tangier, a $17 cocktail with grapefruit, lemon, pilsner, Cocchi Americano, and fino sherry. In short, this was a tasty, fancy version of a shandy. Another person loved the summery $18 Watermelon Gazoz, with baby watermelon juice, lemon, dry vermouth, and brut sparkling wine, which had a couple of pieces of watermelon in it. The server recommended one bread per dip, so we decided to share two dips and two breads, which was filling and tasty. My preference of the two dips was the $12 Not Your Average Hummus, with marinated chickpeas and bang bang shata, or shatta, a popular hot chili paste throughout the Levant. The hummus had a wonderful texture, being closest to the level of Laser Wolf or Ayat, with the chickpeas cooked down enough to be soft but not so much that they lacked texture. The green shata on top added a slight salty and spicy kick. The other choice for the same price was the Matbucha, a dip made from roasted eggplant, charred tomato, pepper, mint, and cilantro. It had some nice smoky elements with a little bit of heat. For breads, my easy preference was the $13 Frena, a Moroccan bread with garlic and oregano. The bread had a soft inside and a slightly chewy outside, and while I preferred the more charred version at Frena, the restaurant of the same name, the roasted garlic was a nice touch. There was also the decent Laffa for $12, a grilled flatbread topped with preserved lemon butter, dill, sumac, and sea salt. I found the texture less interesting, and it was a bit messy due to the lemon butter, but the thick texture worked well enough for both dips. My main dish of choice was, unfortunately, the $29 Lamb Kebab, with baharat-spiced potatoes, whipped goat cheese, shishito, Castelvetrano, and chili. For pros, I liked all of the accompaniments, though I wish the potatoes had a bit more spice, even if they were well roasted. However, the portion felt a bit dainty, with five small pieces, and the lamb just wasn't cooked well. First, while it looked good, the meat was quite dry. More importantly, the lamb was not sliced against the grain properly before being put onto the shish, resulting in every piece being extremely chewy from muscle fibers unless it was cut into very tiny pieces, which I preferred doing over choking. Combined with the price point, I pretty much hated my main dish and didn't finish it as I got tired of cutting the lamb. Others found the Grass-Fed Steak Shish Kebab, which was the same price as my dish, decent, but they also preferred the appetizers. As an ending, two of us decided to each get one of their Instagram-famous sundaes, because when in Rome (or greater Syria). We both went with The Mic Drop for $15, with tahini soft serve, halva floss, hazelnut, and pomegranate reduction. The soft serve was light, with a bit of sweetness and some nuttiness, while the floss halva/pişmaniye added some texture, though it was overall a tad messy. I loved the roasted hazelnuts throughout, and the reduction added some sourness, which the other person disliked, but I enjoyed it. It was overall a nice mix, but it reminded me of a worse version of the silan dessert from Dagon on the UWS, which has more textures, has a more balanced flavor, and is less messy overall. I have slight food regrets with this restaurant, as I was originally going to get either the Fish in a Cage or one of the other small plates. Outside of the bad entree, we had a good meal here, and I can see why others like this place a lot. I prefer them heavily, at least compared to their sister spot, Shuka, as the spices and flavors are much more pronounced. read more

We wanted to try middle eastern while we were visiting NYC, we decided on shukette. I want to preface that we are both of middle eastern descent, so our taste is well equipped for this cuisine. The labneh was ok, I see what they were trying to go with it. But sometimes keeping it simple is the way to go. The breads were solid, kinda hard to mess this up. The broccolini was undercooked and not seasoned. The scallops lacked flavor as well. We had high expectations, as we when we were doing our research this spot looked good online. Everything here was just great. The flavors are beautiful. I loved the strawberry lebneh and I've never had fluffier bread in my life. I only wish we had more bread for all that lebneh. Made a reservation but it wasn't crowded on a late Thursday night. Host was incredibly welcoming and kind because we were a bit late. Server told us we needed to get going and was helpful in getting us decided. Ambience was romantic, urban, and lively. As someone who's allergic to gluten LOL, this was 1000% worth it. Ordered the Frena w labneh -- one of the best bread I've had in my life, and the spread was amazing. Also got the steak shish kabob -- very juicy, but kind of hard to eat once it cools down. Also got the lamb skewer -- this is where I started to feel the gluten kick in, so I wasn't feeling 100%, but it was so yummy still! Probably my second fave dish here besides the frena. Lastly, ordered the Tahini soft serve -- the ice cream and sorbet mix was very interesting, but then it ended up working very well together! My friend tried this place out and raved about how this may have been the best meal of his life. Reservations are definitely needed and he was able to get us a table on a Tuesday night. The service here was very friendly and welcoming! Our server in particular was awesome especially given how busy this place was even on a Tuesday night. The vibe here is fun with great music, everyone including the employees seemed to be in a good mood. We ordered a variety of plates to share and started out with the labneh dip and bread. I really like labneh and the strawberries and sumac gave this a sweet and tangy flavor. We also ordered the roasted beet, chicken, fish in a cage and jeweled basmati rice. The main flavors that permeated all of the food was garlic and salt. I'm a fan of garlic so I didn't mind but some of the dishes especially the caged fish were extremely salty. We were all a big fan of the Paesi turkey house wine, it paired well with the food. Surprisingly my favorite dish was the rice. The rice was so flavorful and fluffy, I probably could eat a whole pot on my own. All of the dishes were beautifully plated and visually appealing. We ended the meal with the soft serve ice cream. Finally got to check Shukette off of my NYC restaurant bucket list! We had a 5:15 counter reservation on a Monday night and were seated right away upon arrival. We loved being able to watch the food being cooked and plated in the kitchen. Ambiance was great and the playlist was one banger after another. For dinner we shared the fairy eggplant, broccolini, hummus, frena, Joojeh Chicken and jeweled rice. We absolutely loved the chicken and the broccoli. I did have a quibble with the eggplant because the menu doesn't list it as being fried and also doesn't use any of the clue words like "crispy" to even hint that it might be fried. I have to stay away from deep fried food for health reasons so that was disappointing but we loved everything else. Loved the atmosphere here. Lively, upbeat, upscale yet relaxed and casual all at the same time. Hip hop and RnB playing so the noise level is a little higher than some other restaurants. We chose Shukette for our 14th wedding anniversary dinner - looking for something fun, delicious, and maybe a little splurgy.* Our server, who's name I can't remember, was outstanding. In general, the service was far above expectations for a "fun" restaurant. I dropped my napkin twice, and he was there to scoop it up and replace. My wife dropped her fork - same thing. Our extra plates were picked up quickly. Water carafe was filled regularly. We largely went with our server's recommendations for food, after starting with a Tangier drink for my wife and the heaviest red wine available for me - from Lebanon. We both thought the drinks were delicious and paired well with the food. For dips, we chose the Labneh and Smoked Arctic Char with Frena bread. Labneh and bread - some of the best things we have ever eaten. (I'd get the char again, because fish feels healthy.) When we finished the bread, server recommended we try the Lafa bread. Also fantastic, but I would choose 2 Frenas next time. For The Shuk category, we chose Glazed Sweet Potatoes (CAN'T MISS), Roasted Beets (would order again), Shrimp A La Plancha (wouldn't order again - tasty, but hard to eat grilled with shell on - didn't blow me away), and shawarma spiced fries. Fries were affordable and a nice "stuffer" if you had a table. Took away from the "healthy" feel of the meal for me, and weren't worth the space in my tummy that was mostly gone by that point in the meal. Went with the Joojeh chicken next, which was succulent and delicious. I would be happy to eat that again, or try the fish in a cage (which seemed like everyone ordered.) We also added Bang Bang Shata and White Harissa. The Bang Bang was insanely hot for us. We put tiny amounts on things - didn't have the heat strength to take care of much of it. The Harissa was a must if you choose the fries. We finished with The Swirl, which had a nice little candle in it with a "happy anniversary" wish from the person delivering it. Tasty, but we would choose The Mic Drop next time. *Splurgy in the sense that we tried many things - probably 2-3 more things than our stomachs were prepared to hold. Kids finished the leftover fries when we returned home. And one note about noise, since that seems to come up, we found Shukette to be as noisy as an average, lively NYC restaurant. It wasn't bothersome or too loud to hear one another. In summary, we had an amazing experience at Shukette. I'm excited to recommend it to friends and visit again sometime. read more

Had one of the best meals ever at Shukette. The menu is packed with bold, vibrant Middle Eastern flavors, and every dish we tried completely delivered. We started with the smoked arctic char dip, which was rich, smoky, and perfectly balanced, especially with the fresh frena bread. The broccolini di ciccio stood out with its herbed tahini, pickled shallots, and a great mix of texture and brightness. The shakshuka-style butter beans were incredibly comforting and flavorful, layered with garlic and herbs. The fish in a cage was a highlight. The whole black bass came out beautifully cooked with green charmoula, fennel, and potato, making it both impressive and deeply satisfying. We also loved the pickles, which added the perfect sharp contrast to the meal. Their signature bang bang shata hot sauce deserves a special mention. It brings real heat, but more importantly, it has the depth and complexity to match, elevating everything it touches. This was easily one of the most memorable dining experiences I've had in NYC. I haven't had so much fun dining for a long time, partly because we stick with our tried and true usual places. My husband has been trying to get a table here but we got lucky that there was a table on a Tue night at 5:30 just as we were done with some errands. Anyway, I will always ask for indoors because the music was popping! They were playing late 90s early aught hip hop and it brought me back to my twenties. Some of you GenXers might remember a tiny bar/club in east village called BoB that used to play the sickest hiphop mix? Good times... anyway, I felt like I was at a party and it was hard not to sing and dance while I was sitting in the booth. I caught some guy singing along too. Oh and the food! There wasn't a single thing that I didn't want to try. It was really hard to pick the items to try for the first time. Well, everything we ordered was so delicious, thankfully. The frena, Moroccan bread is wow. The smell when it came to our table was so mouthwatering. Fluffy, a little garlicky and a slight kick for chef's kiss. We ordered the smoked white fish dip but man we wanted to order all the dips. The dip was great but the bread flavor kind of disappears when you eat it with the dip. And that bread should be enjoyed alone. We also got the fairytale eggplant from the shuk section. Another wowzer, party in the mouth. Then the fish in a cage and scallops shuk came as mains. Everything was fresh and flavorful. The dessert we went with was a tahini soft serve and blueberry sorbet. Get their soft serve dessert. It's an incredible end to a fun dinner. The music was loud but not enough to drown out your partner's voice and due to cork walls, the diners' conversations seemed muted and it's also nice that we are not packed in like sardines. The service was friendly and efficient. Really, there was very little to be desired in that dining experience. I can't wait to go back because I saw some amazing looking things pass by. read more

I'm late to the party on this one, but I (finally) made it to Shukette and now I understand why reservations are still so hard to get. The menu is veggie forward, so there are plenty of (delicious) options for vegetarians and vegans. To start, we ordered the Frena bread, Labneh, and Beet Tzatziki. All three were excellent - no notes. The Frena bread is so good, it really deserves it's own post. We shared the Heirloom Carrots, Glazed Sweet Potatoes, and Charred Broccoli di Ciccio as our "mains" and WOW. Shukette knows how to make you eat your veggies. The carrots and sweet potatoes are melt in your mouth delicious. The broccoli is the only dish I wouldn't order again. To finish, we had the Mic Drop Tahini Soft Serve. It's huge (translation: easy to topple over), and the perfect, subtly sweet end to the meal. This is going straight to the top of my favorites list, and I can't wait to go back. read more

Was finally able to try this spot out and managed to get a reservation day of by the counter for a weekday dinner. Getting the counter seat was actually so much fun because you get to see the pass, the craziness of the dinner rush, and every dish made in front of you. We originally ordered the Lafa, but had to get the Frena after seeing it get ordered so often and it's literally the best bread ever - sooo fluffy and crispy on the bottom. Calamari dish was a miss for me, but my friend liked it. For entree, we got fish in a cage and chicken. The chicken was oh so moist and something I'd come back for (+ the frena). I'm so glad I found this restaurant! I came for a solo dinner and thoroughly enjoyed everything I ordered. I was actually sad I couldn't eat it all myself! Everything you order will be delicious but I recommend the labneh and frena at the very least. I could have eaten just that and been happy. Fair warning: the wait is brutal. Even for just me without a reservation it was 40 minutes on a Tuesday night after 8:30pm. I was also sat outside and was freezing since the heaters didn't reach me. The food all came out quickly and the server constantly checked on me but I definitely felt rushed to eat before I froze to death or all the trains left. My boyfriend and I visited Shukette during a December NYC trip. What a fantastic experience. Phenomenal food, great service, and immaculate vibes. I highly recommend making a reservation for this spot. We saw people waiting a long time for tables to open up. We had reservations for the chef counter, which overlooks the kitchen. It was fascinating being able to watch the flow of the kitchen, seeing how each dish is made and who owns each step of the process. Our server was friendly and attentive. He provided insightful menu recommendations throughout the meal. We started with the Frena and Labneh. Both were fantastic. I see why people come here just for the Frena. The crunch is so satisfying. The Labneh is equally craveable. That hot honey adds the perfect hint of sweetness to break through the tart base. Next we ordered a selection of dishes from The Shuk section of the menu. We got the Charred Kale, Egyptian Spiced Grilled Wings, Shawarma Spiced Fries, and Shukette Pickles. All were wonderful. As a fry snob, my favorite bites were the Shawarma Fries. Highly recommend getting either the Toum or White Harissa sauce on the side to dip - preferably both! For the finale, we shared the Fish in a Cage. This was a super moist and flavorful dish. I don't eat whole fish frequently, but they make it easy to navigate. The head comes off easily and the body has already been filleted for you. There were a couple small bones throughout, so eat with caution. For dessert we shared The Swirl. I expected it to be very sweet, but it definitely leans more tart. Combined with the nuttiness of the tahini, you get a super craveable dessert which doesn't taste like it's packed full of sugar. Shukette screams fun date night or night out with friends. The bustling atmosphere, the upbeat music, the young crowd. If you're looking for quiet & romantic - this isn't it. Highly recommend this place. I can safely say that I had the best meal of 2025 here last night for my Birthday. Everything we ordered was beautifully plated, quickly made, and an absolute flavor bomb that left me making this face after every single bite: 8-O We ordered the frena bread, arctic char spread, and the labneh spread topped with pomegranate syrup. We also got the halloumi and the joojeh chicken. Everything was remarkable. The labneh spread was our favorite bite but--we'd order everything all over again. Seriously mad we didn't book another reservation upon leaving because ... it's that good! Oh, and the service--Carlos our waiter was a dream. Not only was he full of energy but you can tell he genuinely loves the food himself. I love this restaurant - it's a go to when I have friends visiting! Definitely recommend making a reservation if you're going on the weekend and note that it is difficult to sit parties larger than 4 (unless previously reserved). They do have an outdoor area that is enclosed and heated in the winter. The dips and shuk are perfectly shareable - my favorite dips are the labneh and smoked arctic char, and my favorite shuks are the cauliflower, halloumi, and wings. They change the menu up pretty frequently, but a few of those are staples. For main sharing dish, I usually rotate between the fish and the chicken - both are good, I might like the chicken a little better. This place was great! Service was the most outstanding part of the experience honestly. They were kind, very fast and attentive, and refilled the water like nobody's business. We were seated in the outdoor heated patio area, which was honestly very nice and warm. It was a lot quieter than the main area, which we appreciated. Food was deeeelish. Those dips and breads were the star of the show, especially the labneh, parsnip, and the frena was absolutely to die for. We ended up getting two because it was sooo good. We had a reservation and were seated outside right in the front. I knew there could be a problem when we sat down and there were purple blankets on the chairs. Soft blankets, but still, I was worried Our menus flew away so I went inside and asked if we could sit somewhere else. They were able to sit us on the side of the restaurant outside under a plastic enclosure. Sitting down I was a little bit worried because the chairs at the table seemed really rickety until I met Juan. I forgot all about the rickety chairs and tables once Juan and the food entered my life. Juan is a bright shiny star so happy self friendly so warm and he told us everything to order. He didn't lead us astray once and we love that in a waiter. This time during our our New York visit we were not only discussing our food we are also our waiters. As the hummus was being served, I was telling my table that I don't eat hummus anymore. I found a reason to go back on that here. A must order would be the very first bread in the bread slices for handstands down. So I must've said that it was my birthday when I made the reservation which my birthday is this month and our dessert came with a candle and Juan sang happy birthday to me. It was so freaking cute. I was with two non-dessert eaters but they dove in and I seriously got no more than 1/3rd of it, not one slurp bite or morsel more. I wanted to order another. The only chains I'd make is that I wish there were more bathrooms. I felt bad for the waitstaff peeking at the line and choosing not to stand in it. I hear the chef is up for a James Beard award and the menu is changing with more veggies for the summer. I'll be back in August! read more
