It had been a while since my dining companion and I visited our 'Happy Hummus Place' on 9th Avenue in Hell's Kitchen. While we're making fewer trips into the city these days, our return for a pre-theater lunch proved that Hummus Kitchen hasn't missed a beat -- in fact, we both agreed that they've stepped up the entire experience. The Kosher Israeli food is fresher and tastier than ever. The Green Shakshuka off the Brunch menu was a standout, featuring a rich, spiced tomato sauce topped with fresh baby spinach and two perfectly poached eggs. A major highlight to me was the swap from the traditional pita bread to a mini challah bread for dipping. The bread's sweetness perfectly complemented the savory stew. We finished with Turkish coffees and the Kitchen Kadaif, which was absolutely incredible. It's hard to believe it's dairy-free with a combination of shredded phyllo, rich halva, and shredded coconut that's the perfect balance of texture and sweetness. The service was incredibly friendly and attentive without being overbearing, ensuring we were out with plenty of time for our show at Studio 54. Have been here a few times now for both lunch and dinner (weekends and weekdays) and the food and service is always great. I first went to Hummus Kitchen at their UES location, but this one is equally wonderful. The space is on the smaller side (a bit narrow) and they have indoor seating for around 20-25 people. I recommend making a reservation in advance. The servers are friendly, attentive and the food comes out fairly quickly. As the name implies, the hummus here is excellent as is the thick pita it comes with (they have regular and whole wheat). If you haven't been before, get "the hummus kitchen" as it has 4 different types of hummus you can try. The mazze are also tasty, my favorite would have to be the grape leaves, but the falafel, cauliflower and babaghanoush are also extremely delicious (you can order any 3 for $28 and it comes with pita). For entrees, I highly highly recommend the chicken shawarma tacos (2 per serving) followed by the open arais tacos (also 2 per serving) and the Mediterranean red chicken (in that order). If you don't go with the shawarma tacos or want less bread, then the shawarma platter is also a good choice. The chicken shawarma tacos here are simply incredible, they serve them in their warm fluffy pita, sliced in half, open and fill the inside with chicken, onions and whatever else makes is so ridiculously addictive. This thing is bursting with flavor, it has to be the best chicken shawarma I have had in NYC. The tacos also come with a small side of hummus and babaghanoush along with pickles and some tomato salad. The portions are what you would expect as are the prices. Really a delicious spot if you are in the area or want a great/quick meal before or after a show. read more

The cauliflower sauce was amazing and paired well with the zest of the cauliflower. I wasn't the biggest fan of the grape leaf one but that's a personal preference. Loved the restaurant logo on the wall made from cement grout. Service was also wonderful. We ordered chicken shawarma tacos, veggie hummus, and my chicken shawarma platter with rice. All the food was delicious. Have to say the standout was the hummus with veggies. The roasted beets were incredible. The seasoning on them was so good. Fava Mazze: Hearty beans and nice sauces. A really substantial appetizer. Cauliflower: Roasted and lightly pickled. It was decent, but it's still cauliflower. Stuffed Grape Leaves: Really loved how this got fancied up with fresh pomegranate seeds and a tangy herbal sauce. Plus, tasted fresher than those really dense grape leaves that are made a long time ago. Humshuka: This was the perfect choice for me. I wanted to taste the shakshuka, but I also wanted the signature hummus. This was mainly hummus, with some nice tomato stew swirls. The service is super friendly and welcoming, but not "hovering". The ambiance is very cool, authentic, and cozy. Once again, a marvelous meal here. I didn't even know that they have brunch! But they do! My son-in-law and grandson were in town to go see Tosca at the Met. But they have a small enclosure on the sidewalk in front so we pushed the 2 little tables together and it was fine. Back to brunch...I often get a falafel "taco" platter or shakshuka. Both here are excellent. But on the brunch menu they have a humshuka, which is a platter of hummus and shakshuka with just 1 egg on top. Your choice of whole wheat or regular pita. SO good! Son-in-law had the sinya shakshuka, which is with beef, and with it came a miniature challah loaf! He had a beer as well. The brunch special includes a small 3-section dish with an appetizer sample. This was one stuffed grape leaf, 2 pieces of their excellent roasted cauliflower, and a luscious bean salad. Everyone ordered the special. Grandson and husband had something we've never seen before, I think it was spelled jeneh or something like that. It was a rolled up kind of slow cooked bread, served with a brown egg, some pickles, Israeli salad and tahini. Not satisfying enough for my husband, but I was stuffed and was happy to share some hummus and pita with him. We didn't think that particular dish was worth the price, but live and learn. Wow was really blown away with the quality and amount of food here! We came for the lunch special- one of us got the chicken shwarma and the other got salmon. Both were absolutely delicious. The salmon had the perfect sear, while the chicken was juicy and flavorful and came with a delicious sauce that really took it to the next level. The special also came with a cucumber/tomato salad, hummus, mujadara and warm pita bread- all were so fresh and flavorful. My only complaint is that it was a little pricey, especially when compared to other lunch specials- I believe it was around $18-22? In addition, I tasted my friend's schnitzel, which was lightly breaded, crunchy, and full of great savory flavor. For dessert, my friend and I shared the Kadij Kitchen and Loco Morocco, which was chocolate mousse cake, with coconut and whipped cream. I loved the Kadij Kitchen, which consisted of halva parfait on shredded phyllo dough, topped with halva ice cream. This was simply delightful, with delicate spun halva, flaky dough, along with a sticky velvety smooth ice cream that didn't seem to melt. The taste was not too sweet, yet very satisfying. My husband successfully talked me into going with him to drop the car off for service (boring) by bribing me with dinner at Hummus Kitchen (not boring), which is only two blocks away from the dealership. It is so cute and relaxing inside and the staff is super nice. The falafel tacos are delicious and are a good shareable dish if you are not too hungry (or want to order some mazze to share, too) because they come with two per order and all the extras (baba ganoush, hummus, tahini, tomato & cucumber salad, and pickles) come on the side so you can each customize to your liking. They also include a surprise extra falafel ball that you can share or fight over. Ask for the green hot sauce but be warned - it is very hot, so start light handed. Don't be confused when you see "tacos" on the menu - they are traditional pitas, not tortillas. The passionfruit magarita was, as stated on the menu, "summer in a glass". And no disrespect to my Greek friends, but they make the best baklava! It is not the typical overly sticky and sweet variety and comes in an order of three small pieces - one each of almond, walnut, and pistachio. The pistachio is our fave. My husband made a declaration that next time, he might get his own order so he won't have to share. Best hummus I've ever tasted! In this NYC foodie mecca, I am grateful for finding Hummus Kitchen. It was our last night in Manhattan and we were looking for somewhere near our hotel for dinner. We narrowed it down to mediterranean and Hummus Kitchen was just a few blocks away. So off we went. We almost didn't see it because it's the definition of a hole in the wall. There is not much seating inside, but it was late and we got a table quickly. Our server arrived almost instantly and presented us with electronic tablets for menus. We got some hummus appetizer with pita bread. We all agreed that the hummus was unlike any hummus we've ever tasted. It was buttery smooth and tasted delicious! Yom Yom Yom! We also tried the Grilled chicken, Shawarma platter, Seniya Pita taco and the Arais. Everything we had was delicious. The chicken was juicy. The marinated beef was grilled perfectly. The sauces were spot on. Even the pita bread was toasted just right. It's true everything tastes better when you're hungry, so we must've been really hungry!
