I'm sooo sad Shuggies is closing. The innovative menu and concept is just too far ahead of its time. The food here is so good, beautifully presented, and unlike anything you will ever have. We had the tuna ribs? (Basically a carcass, perfectly seasoned where you scraped off the meat), beef brisket and fries. Restaurant inside and super fun and kitschy. After visiting again recently I wanted to update my review, as the restaurant is pretty different now. I would say most of my concerns from my original review have been addressed - the menu is larger now and the music was a much more reasonable volume. This time around, we tried a bunch of dishes that weren't pizza, and all were amazing! I do wish that there were some pizzas on the regular menu, as I really did enjoy it last time. Some standouts this time were the fries and the boar chop - both were amazing and paired well! The cacio e Pepe fluff was also amazing, and a must-get IMO. The one dish I'd pass one was a veggie dish that I can't remember the name of - it was tasty, but I just thought the portion was too small. Still love the vibe here, and the service was great. The bright orange and green room is like Wes Anderson had a loud baby with a neon spray paint. The ambiance screams fine dining until you see a twist in the menu. It was early Sunday, so they brought out their happy hour menu and pizza menu. Service was great, and the staff was super friendly. See if you can spot the twist. - Onion peels funions with ugly trumpet mushroom sauce - Grandma-style pizza: CHEDDAR & FETA radish top chimichurri, broccoli stalks - Bon bon handy chocolate mousse, peanut fluff, spent espresso tuile, edible glitter That's right. Rejected grocery items. The funions and bon bon handy were my favorites. I was more astonished to discover that onion peels make onion powder... I thought we'd get a few drinks and maybe have to eat somewhere else to supplement but we left super satisfied. We got the Funyuns to start and I had the jammy red wine. Came in the summer when the focus was pizza before they rebranded their concept. Tried the Bobo's the Pep, the Roni pizza, already famous garlic knots, and the super shroomy pizza puffs. The garlic knots were great. I wanted a little more garlic, but the butter and ricotta made it delicious. I loved the wilted greens on it. The pizza puffs reminded me so much of hot pockets but better. A nice crispy exterior and piping hot interior. The mushrooms were delicious. Grandma slices are such a good type of pizza. The pizza was good. There was a lot of toppings, so it was more wet overall and almost masked the crispiness of the crust. In the front where the host checks you in is completely yellow and the back room with the self-seat bar is fully green. In the green room there's a table, which we sat at, that had green hands. The material felt like it was like those toddler playhouses, a little sticky to the touch. Service The host made it clear we only had the table for 90 minutes. We weren't drinking so we weren't planning to hang out for a while, but there seemed there was already an expectation to turn the table and we felt rushed. We had already waited 45 minutes to get seated. Food was amazing! I had their pizza at outside lands 2025 and absolutely needed to try again in restaurant. The fries were super crispy with so much flavor. I wish the pizza was as crispy as the first time I had it, but I think in the future I could ask for it overcooked! The pepperoni was spicy and thick cut 10/10. Rating is 4/5 because the servers checked in when food was delivered or when other people were being sat around, not in between. Also it would've been great for the fries to come with a sauce! I made a reservation since I heard they are going to stop doing trash pies in a few weeks- The ambiance is so cool and eclectic, from the moment you walk in to when you realize there's another room to what originally felt like a tiny shop! I have a minor complaint- we ordered the crispy green beans and it wasn't until they served the dish that we were informed they ran out of green beans and replaced it with asparagus instead. This dish was super delicious- but as a person with a lot of food allergies, I was not thrilled that it wasn't communicated at the start. Trash pies we ordered Summer Pie - with tomato, squash, chèvre - delicious, nice that the crust was yummy and crispy. the regular cheese on it felt a little overwhelming but the chèvre added a much needed tang. The Big Chee 2.0 - with ricotta, mozzarella, grana padano, garlic - love that this was loaded with garlic and personally love that we had whole cloves- however this was actually too much cheese. I love cheese but felt overwhelmed and wouldn't get this one again. It needed something maybe a little acidic to cut through the cheese. Social media hyped this place up for me that I had to come try it out. I'm glad I finally did and it was such a vibe. The whole aesthetic of the restaurant is soooo cute, I was taking notes for my own home decor. My friend and I got mocktails and we were pleasantly surprised at how refreshing they were. She got the Pineapple Shrub and Soda and I got the Ginger Lime Spritz. They also offer you either still or sparkling water. Be aware that if you get sparkling water you'll be charged $9 for the bottle. The staff were so friendly, our waiter asked if we had any dietary restrictions. I let them know I was gluten free and dairy free so she informed us that the fish sticks we ordered was not any of that. She recommended that we order about 4 plates between us but we decided on 2. We then saw what she meant, 4 plates probably would be of been great because we weren't filled. I also wanted to say that between two plates and two mocktails it was already around $80. I'd say this location is more for small bites and grab a drink or two restaurant but they do have a section on their menu for bigger bites so I'm curious how that would look. The restaurant is on the corner so it won't be hard to miss but parking is not so great so you'd have to search for street parking. read more

We had such a fun and enjoyable dinner with excellent, attentive service by Elijah! We ordered six dishes and each one impressed us; not only was each dish delicious but the creativity of the ingredients and the presentation also contributed to the wonderful experience we had at Shuggie's. Kayla visited our table several times and was super friendly, warm and expressed gratitude for our visit; that really helped make our evening even more pleasant than it already was. It also made us very sad that Shuggie's is closing, but we are hopeful that their amazing, sustainable food journey will continue on in some other way in the future. What they do is so important in terms of not only feeding people food & JOY, but also educating people about how we can be less wasteful if you just think outside the box. Thank you, Shuggie's team! They say one mans trash is another mans treasure. At Shuggies they take that to heart by creating dishes from imperfect fruits, veggies and meats. In other words "rescued" ingredients. The decor of the place is really unique. It screams fun! I can't think of another place like it. The NY Times even recommends it as one of the top 25 restaurants to eat at in the city. I stuck with the pizza which tasted great. Although the competition for best tasting pizza in SF is pretty stiff. I wouldn't put it at the top. We had 4 dishes to share for the restaurant week menu. It started with an asparagus tempura in a lip shaped dish. I really enjoyed it, it was perfectly crispy and not greasy. Next was the meatball made of beef heart in tomato sauce. I couldn't tell it was made of heart and it tasted pretty good. For the trash pie, we got the mushroom verde pizza. It was tasty, the mushrooms were roasted well and the crust was nice and crispy. The dessert was a chocolate semifreddo which is similar in texture to a mousse. The service was nice and attentive. He brought us some chili oil for the pizza that was made in house, it went really well with the pizza! Overall it was a good meal and I would definitely recommend this spot. I really liked the concept of Shuggie's and their goal of tackling food waste, so it's been on my list for a while. I came on a Thursday night and was seated immediately. First off, the space itself is insanely vibe. There's a yellow and green room that are both so unique in their decorations; even the bathroom was interesting. In terms of the food, we ordered the Sausage Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band with a side of Ricotta Fluff and the Big Papa Cal's Daddy Cabbage. Overall, the food was solid but maybe a little overpriced for what you're getting. The pizza had a good flavor but lacked structure and fell apart super easily; it definitely isn't the best pizza in the city by any means but it was good enough. The charred cabbage had a good mixture of flavors, but I wish the portion was much bigger. The ricotta was super yummy--we were honestly just eating it by the spoonful, so I would super recommend ordering it. Service was kind and attentive, and the meal was enjoyable in general. The bar and restaurant interior looked super fun and had a lot of personality I especially liked the stark color differences between the restaurant and bar side. It's September 2025 and the pivot to the new menu with a more fun-yet-fine dining vibe is a huge success. I always really liked Shuggie's pizza and I'm a HUGE fan of their annual crawfish boil, and this revamp just took their cuisine to the next level. I didn't even really know what to expect from the menu but everything we had was so interesting and flavorful. The tomato & stone fruit salad, fish sticks, and cacio e pepe floof were all outstanding. The polenta with fried green tomatoes and okra also blew me away -- some of the best okra I've had in years. The beef dish is really fun and served with some of the most perfect French fries ever. And don't sleep on the dessert -- we were gifted it as it was a birthday dinner, and it was a sparkling delight (literally). The Hot Breakfast is incredible. It's full of gorgeous flavors and the perfect amount of spice! I've been back a few times for this dish. Haunted. Cacio de Pepe Pillow is visually mesmerizing and so delicious that it a challenge to eat it in a civilized manner. The base is a crunchy on the outside and sensuously chewy on the inside fresh baked bread. It's topped with the perfect egg and angel tears (I don't know what it is but damn, it's stunning). Hubs and I sat at the counter and had a terrific meal and conversation with David, the chef. Highlights were my mai-ta-ipa drink, I'm a sucker for anything with orgeat, the cacio e pepe foccacia, and the funyuns homage. But everything was delicious, with the added bonus of also being sensitive to sustainability and avoiding food waste. We came for a Saturday night reservation and was promptly seated. The food menu is small, one page, but the drink menu is larger. Sadly, there are only 3 non alcoholic options and when we asked if the cocktails could be made into mocktails, we were told no. We ended up both ordering the Ginger Lime Spritz. We had to follow up for my drink, maybe waited 10 minutes or so. It was really no problem and we were pleasantly surprised to be gifted the Stonefruit Salad as an apology for the wait! The salad (peaches, tomatoes, mint, some crispy onion bits?) turned out to be my favourite dish of the night too! We also ordered the Sausage Party Trash Pie (has a kick of spice so really great with a the honey add on) and the Garlic Knots (the ricotta fluff is to die for!) All in all, this was a great dining experience! Didn't get a chance to try this place when they were doing the pizzas and really wish I had. The food is very creative and I love their mission, but it was a little difficult to know what to expect from each plate based on the description. 4 of us split a couple apps, a couple musts, and a couple bigs, which was the right amount of food. Overall the food was tasty but I think my favorite thing was the fries with mushroom powder that came with the 3 beef entree. The restaurant was bumping and very loud as a result, so it was a little hard to hear everyone. We sat in the green room at one of the tables in the middle of the room and it was just not comfortable for me. The seats that looked like hands were very hard so I couldn't really lean back in them for very long. The table and chairs were both on the shorter side, and the base of the table pushed right up against my chair, so there wasn't room for both of my feet and I kept shifting around for the 2 hours we were there. Servers were friendly but there was a fair amount of waiting to order/for the next course. For example, the bottle of wine also didn't show up until after we'd pretty much finished our salad appetizer - if we had ordered a bunch of cocktails I would have understood but I would have expected a bottle to get there a bit faster. I would definitely return to try the pizza if they ever bring them back. The current menu is worth checking out (especially if you are looking for something different) but can't say any of the meals really stuck with me. read more
