Wimbledon Cake. Strawberry and vanilla cream cake
    Riaria C.

Was happy to discover Shu Cake when I was looking for birthday cakes in the city. They also sell other baked goods like Chinese buns and fancier types of cakes and cream puffs if you are looking for something more unique. Staff at downtown location were very polite and helpful. I walked in right at opening to see if they had ready-made cakes, but I realized cakes required at least 24 hour notice. Staff called their bakers to see if they could squeeze a cake in for me to pick up after 6pm and I was happy they agreed! Day saved. I'm honestly used to walking into a Pusateri or Bake Code and buying a cake but my husband specifically requested a non-grocery chain cake this year. The cake was so light and cream and strawberries were very fresh. They also added a birthday message and gold candle for me. This is a great cross section between the lightness of Chinese style cakes, but with more European flair.

Who else out there is a sucker for pretty desserts? Tried 6 different cakes @7baker.ca and if you enjoy mousse you'll enjoy these. Top left to right- Pineapple mousse with coconut Dacquoise (Puerto Rico) $7.99, Pistachio mousse with black current cake (Green) $6.99, Chocolate mousse with almond Dacquoise (Florence) $6.99 Bottom left to right - Raspberry & Lychee mousse with rose milk pudding (Vienna) $6.99, Coffee flavoured mystery name dessert, it was a new flavour when I went so it didn't have a name yet $6.99 and lastly Peach and Earl Grey tea mousse (Fes) $6.99 Sadly I'm not a big fan of mousse with a gelatin texture so I will probably come back and try their bread or croissants. I did enjoy their purple potato and mochi bread though, good with some tea or coffee.

I keep debating if I should rate this a 3 or a 4. But I think it is definitely just an OK bakery. - wide selection of breads (as expected from a bakery) AND cakes - they have some unique cakes. i love how vibrant they all are. i don't like how mine was 50% or more in mousse (yellow cube) - taste wise much better than bake code that has a similar concept - completely out of ALL the croissants when I came in :( I looked at the oven and they didnt even have a single tray in there baking (3pm sunday) - I adore the dinosaur/7-shaped mascot they have. The art inside the store is also very beautiful (paintings of their baked goods) - hallway is a bit narrow but its downtown... there is a large window to look into their tiny tiny kitchen - they have a bar for quick bites - drinks (tea) start at $4.99 Shrimp Carbonara ($3.99): - expensive for the price. there is 1 big shrimp on it. Does that deserve an extra $1?? I don't think so. I was expecting there to be more cream sauce. Like a cream sauce ribbon, instead the bread was just a little more moist and didnt even have a strong cream flavour. It tasted like a regular chinese bun, a bit more moist, with corn and 1 shrimp on top. $4 was very expensive for the smaller than average bun. Leaf Shaped Matcha bun with Red Bean & Mochi ($6.99): - generously filled! The Red bean and mochi was not too sweet and was a delicious combo. - the bread was a bit dry and tough but it may have been my fault for eating it the next day? - this bun is larger than normal but still expensive for bread Charcoal Crab bun ($7.99?): - bread was ultra soft and fluffy like a fresh asian bun should be - crab salad inside was delicious but very tiny portion unlike the red bean & mochi bun. The crab salad only filled a small pocket - includes a bunch of veggies inside like peas, onions, etc... - most delicious bun overall from the 4 items I've tried

Pork floss mochi cake, coconut cream bun

Hmm. I had high hopes for this bakery since the desserts sounded intriguing, but alas the execution simply wasn't there. The cream in the coconut cream bun tasted like oil, yet was somehow devoid of flavor. The pork floss Mochi box cake sounded good on paper but I'm not sure the mochi layer added anything to the dessert...texture wise it was just mush on mush. I ended up eating the cake and mochi layers separately. I mean I still demolished the entire cake but probably wouldn't do it again...

I should have listened to the Yelp reviews before ordering delivery from here. The pastries are inventive and look visually beautiful but are lacking flavour. Our selections were delivered individually packaged in plastic, which sort of made it feel like airport food vs a luxurious bakery. - The mini Japanese cheesecakes were a tad dry, and lacked flavour. It was more like a pound cake. I was exiting it to be like Uncle Tetsus. - The strawberry box cake was actually very good. I love stars every shortcake and this one had a lot of fluff and was a portion great for sharing for 2. - The BBQ pork bun was very good, the filling had tender pieces of meat and the pastry was subtly sweet, - The Italian cheese and sausage bun was cheese melted on bread with strips of sausage that were sliced very thin. It still tasted good, but similar to a supermarket option. - The butter croissant was good but wasn't crispy on the outside. Overall, I think it could be an okay stop in person if you were in the area, but as a delivery option I would search elsewhere in Toronto for pastries.

    Moana
    Christina Y.

Was soo excited but man the prices are a bummer! Everything was $5.99 or up with 15% discount if you follow them on Instagram. I ordered the Kowloon and Moana cakes. Moana is mango flavoured and Kowloon is supposed to be chocolate with milk tea I believe. There was NO identifiable taste to the Kowloon.. absolutely none... it felt like I was just chewing on sponge cake. This one is a 0.5/5 for me. The Moana on the other hand was contrastingly bursting with mango flavour. Solid 3.5-4/5 taste wise. I haven't tried the other items instore as yet but they looked very interesting.. Maybe it's just the hype but I can't see myself coming here unless I really want to spoil myself.

I went to buy bread at 7 Baker a few days ago to purchase some bread for breakfast, and I found that they just recently downsized all of their bread half the size! The new size was like the size of my hand, compare to before it was more like the size of my 2 hands combined. I really loved the Purple Fever when I first tried it during their Grand Opening. But this time, to be honest I was super disappointed by both the quality and the taste of their breads. Before the same Purple Fever flavour had purple rice, mochi and cheese filling before, but this time I could only taste ONLY purple rice. I cut it open and still couldn't find any trace of cheese or mochi anywhere... From the store's staff's recommendation, I also got the Yammy Mochi bread, $3.99. I ate it today and again, super disappointed in the amount of filling that was inside of it... the amount of filling and the dryness of the bread without it was not worth the price. I thought downsizing would only be downsizing the size, but it turns out the filling and the overall quality let me expectation down. Purple Fever - $3.99 Yammy Mochi - $3.99

    Kowloon cake

I've been here twice now and I find that their products are mostly hit or miss. I was first allured to come because of their "Kowloon" (milk tea and tapioca) cake and it was pretty disappointing on all fronts. The texture of the cake was mostly mousse but it wasn't the melt-in-your-mouth kind, it was more the firm-stale-jello kind. The flavour was also lacking - I couldn't really tell that it was a milk tea cake. While the presentation was nice, the tapioca balls on the top were very hard/difficult to chew and added no palatable value to the cake. 100% would not recommend or order again. I then came back a second time to try their baked goods - I had the matcha lava croissant that everyone raves about and the espresso walnut bread. First off, when I think "lava", I normally think of a gooey custard filling that oozes out. In this case, the matcha filling was more of a whipped creme filling that was fluffy and had peaks. Not bad, but not what I was hoping for. The espresso walnut bread was tastier as it was a really nice blend of chocolate, coffee, and nut flavours in a dense but soft bread, but was still fairly expensive for its size. Overall, I'd say this place has its presentation side down but has room to improve with flavour and value-for-price. I like that their pastry ideas are novel but they're also not the only ones doing this sort of asian-fusion cafe so they've really got to step their game up if they want to stay in the game.

7baker offers premium Euro-Asian style bake good products that are unique and delicious! My personal favourites would be the Shrimp Carbonara and Tom Yum favour bread! They're savoury, full of fragrant, and delicious! Also, the Happa bread is worth trying if you're a matcha fan! Ps: if you're a fan of the 7cakeboutique , you'll be able to order their cake product in store!!!!

The Puerto Rico and Fes. Very limited seating inside the bake shop: one table at the back and a counter with three stools
    Allison D.

First impressions: Photogenic but teeny tiny desserts, limited seating, and rookie service. It felt like one of those cases where the hype on Instagram really outweighed the actual substance. Importantly, 7 Baker really wants you to know that they don't have a public washroom. I visited 7 Baker on a weekday evening after work. The bakery, located at the busy intersection of Yonge and Wellesley, was totally empty at this time. When I looked at the desserts in the case, I was somehow surprised to find that they were all *really tiny*. Maybe all those ultra close-up photos on Instagram distorted the proportions, but I was under the impression that the cakes would have been more...substantial? *Atmosphere* Before ordering, I walked around the bakery to see whether there was any seating and spots for taking photos. The narrow layout seemed to only afford limited counter-seating with three bar stools, and one table at the back with a single chair, seemingly set-up as a photo opportunity with a wall of pictures and neon signage. Though I'm no stranger to eating alone, that table-for-one situation seemed a bit odd. It was also a bit strange to me how the format is geared towards take-out, rather than a sit-down place to socialize and slowly enjoy the *fancy* pastries. *Service* When I approached the front counter to order, before I could even say a single word, the cashier blurted out, "By the way we don't have a public washroom." I was stunned. I just came from work and was dressed professionally. I had full intentions to buy pastries. Even *if* a customer was looking for a restroom, I think that the cashier should let the customer ask, instead of being presumptuous. I was not impressed. The rest of the visit was spoiled by that experience, and I felt a bit uncomfortable and unwelcomed. I tried to be as pleasant and polite as possible, but was honestly really disappointed. Once I clarified that I was *NOT* looking for a washroom and was there to buy and take some photos of their desserts, then they were more helpful and accomodating. They put the desserts on a tray for me to photograph, and then boxed each one of them individually. *Food* I brought the desserts home for my family to try, and really the most positive part of my experience was seeing how happy my family was with trying the new/novel treats. We tried the Puerto Rico ($7,99, yellow with daisy decorations) and Fes ($6.99, pink and heart-shaped). The Puerto Rico was the unanimous favourite: bright, acidic and fruity, not too sweet, with a strong pineapple flavour. The Fes was also good, and I personally liked the pronounced tea-flavour (?) of the jelly in the middle. So, to be fair, though the desserts were tiny at least they did deliver on flavour. In short, 7 Baker does deliver on unique, aesthetic and flavourful fusion east-meets-west pastries, but the rookie service and take-out format does not seem to be consistent with the high-end, pricey product that they're trying to sell.

Matcha bun with red bean and mochi filling
    B L.

7 Baker is a twist on your typical Asian bakery. They have a big selection of interesting buns and cakes. Pricing wise, I think it's reasonable but compared to your traditional Asian bakery it's expensive. Seating was pretty limited, so would recommend going during less busy time during the day or just getting take out. I got the matcha bun with red bean and mochi filling. There wasn't much matcha flavour but if you really like red bean then this might be for you! The soft and chewy bun was filled with mochi and a generous dollop of red bean paste. Overall, interesting combination of textures (chewy mochi, soft bread and thick red bean paste) with a very heavy red bean flavour. My dad liked these buns since he loves mochi and red bean, so if you love them as well then these are worth trying.

TL;DR New Chinese-European fusion bakery with expensive baked goods. Imagine your classic Chinese bakery, but designed by the MOMA. Imagine your classic Chinese pastries, but baked by Daniel Boulud. This is elevated Chinese baking. They have an off-white crab-meat bun for god's sake. We ordered the Matcha Lava croissant. It was $4.99. They have a 15% discount during opening week. Croissant itself was exceptionally baked, reminded us of experiences in France. There was a reservoir of matcha custard within the croissant that spilled into your mouth upon taking a bite. This sounds like it would be a good idea, but it just didn't really work out. The cream was a little too bitter, and could have used some sweetening. In addition, the amount of matcha powder that crested the croissant was really over-poweringly bitter. Definitely not a cheap place, especially when baked goods are $4.99 and upward. We look forward to trying other offerings, but maybe only during special occasions.

My wife always judges a French Cafe by their Butter Croissant ($3.00) and she liked it! She also noticed all the  staff speak French sp it gives it even more legitimacy.  She also ordered a Flat White ($4.50) which was also good. I ordered a Plum Almond Tart ($7.25) because it was the prettiest. It was super delicious so it was definitely a good choice! Service was courteous and friendly. You place your order at the counter and bring it to your table. Someone will come around to clear the dishes when you are done It is a great place to have a nice casual time eating and socializing. They make all their food in-house in the basement. There are products for sale such as coffee beans, fruit syrup, maple syrup, smoked sauces, olive oil, scented soap, wine glassware, etc. I will definitely come back again to try other items. There is free WiFi. The neo-bisto is not wheelchair accessible since there are stairs leading up to the entrance. There are two gender-neutral washrooms. There is free street parking on their one-way south-bound street. Review 2023-017

Hopped on my bike and a half hour later I was there. The friendly staff helped me by answering my question regarding eggs and which items did not have any in the recipes. This place was also super poppin' when I got there. It was earlish in the day around 10:30am and it seemed all the tables were pretty much taken. They are adding a dinner menu which is very exciting. Their pastries are phenomenal!!! Picked up a plum and pistachio tart, a chocolate mousse cake and an apple Danish for my mom. Plus a chocolate caramelized croissant. So much butter, and yet so good. Brought my container, which they happily used. The last time I visited this spot back in 2022, I vowed I would come back and take up space in that beautiful bay window seat. Yet I haven't followed through with that yet. One day. They also changed the name, since I was there last it was called Le Conciliabule Lab. Le Conciliabule means, "speak easy", as their website says. It was used back in the day to describe a place where people would come together and talk about everything and nothing. I can definitely say that happens here. What a beautiful concept, "everything and nothing". Now named Bisou, which means kiss. That's actually really simple and sweet. Since every pastry and any food item or beverage enjoyed here is a kiss for your tastebuds. Love it. Keep going team. You are amazing!
