Such a charming Japanese café -- a perfect spot for anyone with a sweet tooth or looking to try something a little different. This was my first proper introduction to choux pastry, and now I'm hooked. The lady at the front was super friendly and took the time to explain the different options, which made the experience even better. They offer a great variety of choux pastries with unique flavors. We tried the lychee and ube choux -- both were delicious, with soft, airy pastry and rich, flavorful fillings. The lychee had a delicate floral sweetness, while the ube was creamy and subtly nutty. You can really tell they put care into the textures and flavors. We also grabbed the Earl Grey pudding, and it honestly surprised us -- such a deep, aromatic flavor that lingered in the best way. It's definitely worth trying if you're into tea-infused desserts. Aside from choux, they have a nice selection of cakes, puddings, and drinks, so there's something for everyone. A lovely little spot to treat yourself or impress a dessert-loving friend!
Got to try a full cake this time and it was so delicious! The flavoured cream and the two filling layers went really well together. One of the layers has red beans and the second has crunchy bits. The matcha sponge was light and not too heavy. I probably could have eaten the whole thing in one sitting!!
Have always heard great things about this place and especially their cakes. Visited one day, and decided it would be a good option for a birthday cake! Ordered it online and was a very smooth process. I ordered the chestnut earl grey cake and it was the most delicious combination I've had! The balance between the two flavors are really good, as nothing truly overpowers the other. The price is reasonable and it is pretty standard compared to other specialty bakeries. I will definitely be back to try other cake flavors when there is another birthday to be celebrated!
I would say that these are as sweet as they look. I think the best flavours are the matcha and chestnut. Some of the flavours taste a bit different than what I imagine but that's because it's a little different from Chinese bakery flavours. The chestnut choux is more earthy compared to the chestnut cake at Chinese bakeries. Great service and they have cute like toys you can buy in the shop
I love the texture of their choux pastries: light and airy with a bit of crisp.. like a cream puff but in an easier-to-eat shape of an eclair. You can get any amount but they have boxes for 1, 3 and 6 pastries. We found some flavors more difficult to distinguish between. Like chestnut and Jasmine were both lighter flavors (delicious nonetheless). Looking forward to trying more flavors and their cake! They sell whole cakes but it needs to be ordered a day in advance. The staff was so helpful in explaining everything and giving her recommendations.
Seems to have Japanese theme but FYI it is chinese operated and the items didn't seem to be very japanese. I expected they were just doing that to jack up the prices, but the prices actually were reasonable... just over $4 each, and no tax for a purchase of 6 We tried the cream puffs (not sure about the name, but they look like eclairs). Plenty of parking
Stumbled upon this place while dropping by the area to do some grocery shopping. We came at a Sunday around 4pm and they still had lots of options available. All of the flavours looked soo good, but we went with the matcha choux and the kinako mochi. We also ordered a strawberry latte. The interior of the bakery is super cute with cat motifs throughout. The latte was delicious and tasted very refreshing. It had chunks of strawberries at the bottom covered with a strawberry jam. The matcha choux was absolutely delightful with the perfect creamy matcha taste. The kinako mochi was the same and I loved the actual mochi pieces on top. At 4 dollars each, it was a bit expensive, but definitely worth it. We will for sure be back to try the other flavours. The cakes also looked really good and not too bad at about 48 dollars for a 6 inch.
Surprisingly satisfied - as I am always suspicious when bakeries/patisseries advertise themselves as "Japanese inspired" for profits. I have found that many of those places are totally fake-branded. But Kanae cafe is different, NOT one of those places. What I liked about Kanae Cafe was it's focus and simplicity. It does not waste their energy to be overly-flashy. I felt that they are making genuine efforts in how to entertain customers with their unique cookie choux with a variety of "Japanese inspired" flavors. We ordered: Cream Choux (cookie choux) #1. Kinako Mochi: It has distinct Kinako flavor with perfectly chewy little mochi with crispy/eggy cookie choux. Nice combination. I liked it. #2. Chestnut: straight forward with distinct, pure chestnut flavor. #3. Mini Bucket: A bite size, cute. Want to take a box to a home party! Cakes: #1. Chestnut Earl Grey Chiffon: A bit too much cream, but the quality of the cream is good. Chiffon's texture is good. Wished to have more earl grey flavor but OK. #2. Yuzu Cheese Cloud: LOVED this. Light, airy, melt-in-your-mouth Bavarian cream with appropriate cream cheese profile and citrus flavor. It could have more Yuzu flavor over lemon's and my partner wanted the lemon piece to be smaller. But refreshing. Nice texture. I like the cakes. They do not look gorgeous but down-to-earth, no pretentious, with nostalgically homeliness looking with good taste. The combination of flavor is delicately thought-out. These days, I am kind of sick of many "Japanese inspired" bakeries/patisseries which are totally missing the point - these places are just putting too much efforts in "looking like Japanese" but no delicacy on the palate. Kanae Cafe is simple and focused - they know what they are doing. Unique. No frills. Leaving true simplicity with authentic, no-show off but authentic efforts. Price is reasonable. I am very pleased to find here!!!!
Was looking to get Asian cake flavours for my brother's birthday and stumbled upon this place! Price $4-$60 Items ordered: Cakes - Nama Choco Oreo - Yuzu Cheese Cloud Cream Chouxs - Kyoho Grape - Lychee - Pistachio Rasberry - Ube Cheesecake - Mango - Uji Matcha Food Quality (Menu, Taste, Portion size) - 5/5 Great variety of cakes. They have a lot of cream chouxs to try and it's a great treat. A good combination of flaky, soft and filling. They're really tasty and my favourites were the Grape, Ube and Pistachio. My dad LOVED the Yuzu cake that he said it's his favourite cake ever. The Nama chocolate cake melted in your mouth. The portion size for everything was great. Atmosphere - N/A Take out place but had a cute small bakery vibe Service - 5/5 The staff was very nice and helpful. They were great at recommending which cream chouxs to get. They made the process of picking up a pre-order seamless Will I go again? Of course!!! Will probably be where I go to get cakes for friends and need to try more of the cream chouxs! Lash's Recommendations - Everything (not joking)
Got the try the cake from Kanae Cafe . This was Grape flavored cake. Very light and not very sweet. Great for dessert after dinner with a coffee/tea. The cafe is by the new plaza on Mcnicoll and Midland Ave. They sell other smaller treats too. Service was good, helpful staff to explain some of the goodies .
I'd give it a 3.5 if possible. Environment: It was a small area but it was used nicely with lots of cute cat related decorations and other adorable things for sale. Of course, there's a lot of cakes and choux, too. I think it was the owner but she was very nice, welcoming, and told me about the details and deals they had. I was not very interested in the choux but the sponge cakes did! I ordered their sesame in black for $7.85. I think the prices was reasonable as slices of cake in my hometown can cost even more but I had to remind myself that tax was not included yet. It was a beautiful slice but the part with the most black sesame flavor was the top roasted black little paste, right under the orange colored mochi. The cake was light, great texture but I wish it had more black sesame flavor. It was a bit too subtle for me.
We have driven by Kanae many times when we go to Daimaru Sukiyaki. We even went in once to take a look but honestly felt it was quite expensive for us (and we weren't hungry after AYCE lol) I did end up ordering them through Uber Eats as I had a coupon so I figured I'd give it a try. We ordered the 3 pieces of cake with the 3 pieces of Choux. For cake, we chose the chestnut earl grey, the yuzu and the ube taro. For the choux, we chose the chestnut, the Kinako Mochi and the hazelnut crunch. Cake wise, they are all done beautifully. The texture is a balance of jelly and cake. Our favourite was the yuzu. It is quite strong and sour (especially the top layer) but we thought it was super well balanced and well done. Not overly sweet. The taro ube was decent in its flavour and texture. The chestnut had a good cake but being fans of Chinese style cream chestnut cakes this one didn't hit the spot for us. We were more blown away by the Choux. Very delicate and artistic and delicious. The Choux itself even after having it delivered was crispy and fresh. Our favourite was the hazelnut crunch. The texture was incredible with the crispy outer part and the chewy inner balanced with the crunchy top. The kinako had the Mochi on top and the chestnut a paste. Those 2 were still delicious but didn't stand out as much as the hazelnut crunch. Similar to most other reviews, because this place is soooo expensive, we probably don't plan to visit or patronize more than once or twice a year. Good product, not saying not worth it necessarily but in todays economy, very difficult to justify.
As soon as I walked into Kanae, my sense of smell was heightened with the wonderful smell of a bakery. There was a small line even though the weather was snowy. After a short wait, I was greeted with a friendly face. I opted to order 13 of their cream choux. They didn't have all the flavours there (went around 4:30 p.m. on Chinese New Year) so we got one of whatever was there and had to double up on two flavors. The choux was crispy yet light and airy. I loved the Asian flavours as it is not as sweet as some other eclairs. I personally tried the Ube cheesecake and the mochi one. Both were nice however I enjoyed the mochi one better. My husband had the raspberry & the Kyoho Grape. He is usually a raspberry kind of guy but he said that the grape was even better. At $4 per or 6 for $22 ($3.67), it is quite expensive as they are quite small however since it is so delicious, I would buy these as a treat occasionally.
I love the concept of Kanae's Discovery Cake instead of choosing just one flavour, you get to enjoy 10 different flavours in one beautiful cake, making it perfect for sharing with family and friends. Every slice has its own unique flavour and texture, so there's something for everyone. The cakes are beautifully made with light, creamy layers that's aren't overly sweet. The bakery is bright, clean and the staff were super friendly throughout my visit. I'll definitely be back to try more desserts and seasonal flavours. read more

We got three cream choux and three cake slices, and they were all fantastic. You definitely have to try the Nama Chocolate cream choux and the Chestnut Earl Grey Chiffon cake--both were incredible and balanced in sweetness. Will definitely be back for more! read more
We got a cake for an event last minute from kanae cafe. Everything from ordering to pick up was pretty seamless with no issues. We got the earl grey chestnut cake. It had good earl grey flavor in the cake itself. The chestnuts on top and pureed chestnut were pretty good though could have been a bit sweeter. The cream in the cake was light and not too sweet. Overall, a good cake if you enjoy earl grey and chestnut. Price is pretty good for what you get and the fact that you can get it same day is great! read more

My gf and I stopped by for dessert on a sunday evening. I would call it more of a shop rather than a cafe since they have like 2 seats and most ppl take their orders to-go. It's located in the same strip as Daimaru Sukiyaki. The parking lot is huge and there's always a lot of spots. The plaza itself is located off the well-trodden path so to speak. When we arrived, there was not much left in the window. We settled on an ube cheesecake cream choux and a slice of yuzu cheese cloud. Both of them were tasty imo. My gf really liked the ube cheesecake but wasn't a big fan of the cake because of the top layer of yuzu (she thought it was too strong for her liking). She liked everything under the top layer though. At $4 a pop for each choux, I personally think the price is MAD steep but the presentation is nice and there's a lot of technique that goes into making each one, no doubt. Would definitely be open to returning to try some of the other flavours but I'm definitely not making this place a regular visit due to the price. read more

Found this cute little bakery when going to Daimaru Hotpot. I decided to try this place as the website showed an amazing variety of cakes and cream choux. Got a variety of cream choux to go along with the cake and they tasted amazing no complaints. The Kyoho grape cake I ordered came out so nicely and tasted so good. The cake wasn't overly sweet and the grape inside the cake was so good. After this my family ended up always ordering a cake from this spot so far we've tried the Kyoho grape cake, Yuzu Cheese Cloud cake, and Sesame in Black cake. The black sesame cake was by far the best as it came topped with black sesame candy and delicious mochi on top of it. Definitely recommend this spot for getting your cake craving fix. Forgot to take photos of the other cakes but the pictures on their cute website are a perfect match. read more

New to the neighbourhood, I would say this cafe has selection of Japanese fusion pastries. They have a lengthy choux which is a French pastry but fusioned with different variety of Asian inspired flavours. Personally this shape is probably easier to eat than the normal circular puffs you see choux pastries as. I was able to try their matcha latte. It had good flavour. It tasted almost like a blend of a jasmine tea with matcha tea as well. All the pastries are pretty and they have a no tax if you buy 6. The staff was very nice. Something to note: the cafe is small, so you can't really sit and dine in with lots of people. read more

A Japanese cafe specializing in choux pastry and cakes. This is a must visit whenever you're in the area. Their choux pastries are too pretty to eat. They are doing a no tax promo if you buy 6 choux pastries and get 1 free on the house right now. We got the ube cheesecake, jasmine, kyoho grape, momo peach, lychee and the free one was the kinako mochi. They were light, not too sweet and very addictive. Super nice with a cup of green tea. We also got a slice of the chestnut earl grey cake with pieces of real chestnut and strong flavor of earl grey, definitely a highly recommended item to get as well as the kyoho grape gelee which was delicious as well. read more

I had the Yuzu choux pastry. It was really really good. It was beautiful looking and it had a perfect taste. The cream inside was an amazing texture. It's small but well worth it if you take it slow and eat it. Simple cute walk-in place with some stool seating facing the window. Some novelty items for purchase. I recommend this place and I look forward to returning one day. The staff is nice and lots of parking is available. read more
This cafe is popular for their choux pastries and while they were pretty good, I actually preferred the matcha red bean cake! It was not too sweet and had a good balance of matcha flavour and sweetness. Their cakes are not as visually appealing as the cream choux which I think would be more of a crowd pleaser. I tried the Uji matcha, chestnut, and hazelnut flavours which were all pretty yummy. read more

Spontaneously found this spot and decided to try their cream choux pastries! They also have slices of Japanese cakes. We tried four different flavours of their cream choux pastries: raspberry pistachio, uji matcha, jasmine and chestnut. They were all really good!1 The choux was crunchy and the cream was light and not too sweet. Our favourite was definitely the raspberry pistachio and the matcha! As for their cakes, I tried the chestnut earl grey and I loved it. The chiffon cake was soft and not too sweet. The earl grey and chestnut flavours paired really well together! read more

I kept seeing posts about Kanae Cafe on my IG feed so inevitably I ended up there during their grand opening. They specialize in cakes and crunchy choux pastries. Think cream puffs and eclairs but with a crunchy sweet exterior. During the grand opening, Kanae Cafe had a buy two, get one free special on their cake slices, cream puffs, and eclair type choux pastries. They had limited inventory during the time of our visit. Granted we came towards the end of the afternoon. Flavours of cakes included ube taro, and strawberry shortcake. We were able to purchase slices of each of these cakes, as well as the mango choux pastry. The cakes were airy, light yet moist. They use fresh whipped cream for the strawberry shortcake. The ube taro cake was a little denser, owing mainly to the taro that they use, but it too was not too sweet and the cake layers were light. The mango choux was very good and had a nice crunchy texture with lots of pastry cream and tiny fresh mango pieces. Hubby and I returned on New Year's Day and their display was stocked with a full assortment of at least 8 choux pastry flavours and several flavours of cake slices. We also enjoyed the hazelnut and pistachio raspberry choux pastries which each had prominent nutty flavours in the pastry cream. If you like cakes that aren't too sweet and fresh crunchy choux pastry, you should definitely check out Kanae Cafe. read more
Relatively new Japanese dessert spot! Tried a variety of their products including cream choux, cake slices, & drinks. The flavours were all amazing & super tasty! My favourites were the cream choux balls & chestnut earl grey cake def eat them fresh!! Service was also super friendly & welcoming! The store is clean & well-lit with super cute decor. read more
Ordered the Kyoho grape cake and matcha latte and what an amazing treat! The kyoho grape cake was *chefs kiss* - so fluffy and not too sweet, every bite was perfection! Matcha latte was also good but not anything special in my opinion. Would definitely be back to try their other cakes and cream choux! read more

A friend brought me to this place. Didn't know what to expect, but give it a try anyways to my surprise, it's not sweet, lots of different flavors too. No wonder my friend have been there many times. Currently they have a special going on six cream choixes for $24, but they have different varieties of dessert for you to choose from as well. read more

New spot in Scarborough. Just opened up not too long ago. Not too many people know about it yet. The staff is really friendly and helpful. I did not get their cakes so I can't speak on behalf of how tasty they are. Based on what I got the cream croux is really nice. They have a variety of flavours. The raspberry flavour was probably my least favourite. The matcha and Yuzu were nice. I tried out the cream puff based on the sample given out. It's really nice and hits the spot. I didn't end up picking up a box as I already picked up this small box already. Worth coming back for another visit. They do have a few seats for dine in. read more
I got the choux even though I was eyeing the cake slices lol. They had a buy 2 get 1 free deal. The pistachio raspberry and the chestnut were good... but I felt the flavour in the ube one was lost. I do appreciate that they didn't taste too sweet... let's hope there's not a lot of sugar in a choux lol. Have definitely been a bit more indulgent in December!! A few bites and the choux is gone though! A good light pastry if you're not looking for something dense. Give a try today! :) read more
Solid 3.5 stars. Their cakes are quite nice - not too sweet with nice flavors. They have a huge selection of flavors! We've tried a few flavors so far - kyoho grape was very nice. Chestnut, strawberry shortcake - all good! Their mini choux balls are also really tasty - a bit pricey but they are pretty tasty. We've also tried a few flavors of their choux pastries - matcha was nice. Not really our thing as much. But we will definitely keep coming back for their cakes! read more
