    Tonkotsu Pork Ramen
    Kelvin Y.

2nd time in Shoryu. I had the Tonkotsu Pork Bone Broth Ramen at their Soho location so I wanted to try a different bowl. I was not sure whether Karaage Chicken would work in a Ramen Noodle Soup Bowl. Wow! The bowl was fantastic. The red Curry added to the Tonkotsu Pork Broth had great flavor. The Karaage Chicken remained crispy. I'm glad I came back and tried something new at Shoryu

The restaurant itself is pretty small, but we went close to closing time and there were only 2 other people in there when we were, so that wasn't that big of an issue for us. We started with 2 orders of sake. We asked the waiter to pick one of the more common ones and then we chose one that had gold flakes in it (HAD TO). This gave us something to keep us preoccupied while we waited for our ramen to come out. The ramen bowls were well presented with wooden spoons and nicely portioned toppings. It looks pretty and tastes even better... what more could you ask for? I wish we had ramen like this at home, as both of our choices were far from anything I have had before. The broth alone had an amazing flavor, but when combined with the soup additions, it was over the top. The service was a little slow and they never came back to check on us, we had to wave them down multiple times for things. They weren't even busy, so that's the only negative thing about our visit.

Shoryu Ramen Covent Garden is a few minutes walk from Holborn underground station. I went down for their soft opening. The restaurant is pretty small. As soon as you walk in there is a sizeable service station to the right and a small standing table to the left. A step down and there are a few tables for two next to the Japanese Bum Wall (see pic) and a couple of bigger tables to the right. Take another step and you're in the back room where the bulk of the tables are. Downstairs are 2 small toilets. We were sat on the first table squashed next to the bum wall and unfortunately experienced constant traffic from staff and customers walking up and down. The staff also constantly shout out in Japanese very loudly whenever people enter and leave the restaurant. It was all very annoying, you're constantly leaning away from people passing by and it's too loud for conversation. We ordered their classic Origin Tonkotsu ramen noodles with BBC pork belly, mushrooms and spring onions with a couple of sides. Unfortunately it didn't taste good at all, very bland and we both got sick from eating it. We noticed one of the waiters wasn't being unhygienic when dealing with the food too. The only highlight was that the staff were very friendly and the service was prompt.

Trying to not be bias as I am a massive fan of Shoryu. But once again this new addition to the Shoryu chain did not let me down. I can't say for all chains but Shoryu seems to be a few I know that remains consistently good, the same level of quality in food and service. I do love the warm modern decor in this branch, against the rustic exposed brick wall. It's a bit brighter than most of their branch. There is even a standing bar available for those who want a quick meal option like how it is in Japan. Staff seem really energetic and friendly. A great vibe! Kimchi seafood tonkotsu For me the spice level was perfect. Not too spicy but enough in there to build up the heat level as you eat it. The pork broth had depth and complexity with strong flavours of kimchi which is what gives it it's unique sour zing compared to the other spicy ramen available. The three prawns it came with could not get any fresher. They were plump and springy. The queen scallops were okay, a little dense as the heat of the broth probably overcooked it a little but still held onto its delicate sweetness. Squid was also quite average, not much taste in this one but tender enough to enjoy. But the highlight of this ramen was how light it was without the heaviness of the rich char siu pork. Noodles were perfectly cooked, al dente and bouncy and of course the kimchi and beansprouts in there gave it that lovely crunch for an alternate texture. Soft runny egg to complete it. Piri piri tonkotsu The heat was quite similar to the kimchi tonkotsu but this one was much richer with the lovely tenderise pork belly in there giving it that lovely fattiness and sweet umami flavour. The broth was superb, complex in its savoury flavour and seasoned perfectly. The viscosity was perfect too, thick enough to cling onto the ramen as you slurp. And that beautiful runny yolky egg that just gives it that rich thick creaminess against the ramen. Hakata Rei Shabu Salad If only all salads can taste this good. Being cold you can really appreciate the bounciness of the noodles here, giving it a nice bite to it. The sauce was lovely and thick, very strong in its sesame flavour, sweet and nutty which made it very moreish. The chilli yuzu was mild in spice and gave it that lovely complex sweet sour edge . The shabu pork was moist and tender, releasing more flavour as you chew into it. Lettuce gave it that needed crunch just to complete the array of textures. Char siu takana don Quite disappointed with them not using short grain Japanese rice for that authentic sticky fluffy texture. Although it was pretty cheap at £3.00 it wasn't very worth ordering as there was nothing special to it other than pre made pickled mustard greens topped on rice with three pieces of their BBQ pork which of course was the highlight of it all. Even in soft launch I was very impressed with the quality of ramen. Still think Shoryu is the most authentic tonkotsu ramen you can find in London compared to Japan. Even the atmosphere, the level of service, greetings and option to how you would like your ramen cooked matches up. Noodles made in house and perfected after many trails over the years. The only disadvantage of this branch is that it is smaller than the other branches and not many seating option for groups over 2 and staff needs to be trained further on what each dish looks like as one of the staff were convinced that Char Siu Takana don meant the same as extra Char Siu.

Being Japanese and having tried many different ramen places, I feel this place is not that special and quite overpriced. That being said, given that it's London, perhaps it's ok. Although in my view, there are far better ramen places nearby (such as Ippudo and Kanadaya) that are similarly priced. All in all, not a bad place for satisfying a ramen craving of you're nearby, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

The setting is very nice, I went with friend and service was quick. We each had a beautiful and delicious cocktail with their classic ramen. The ramen was delicious and they take 12 hours to make it. I wish I could go more to try more things as the whole menu looked great.

A boisterous restaurant that is much bigger than it seems, this restaurant is pretty welcoming with friendly staff, though it can be hard to hear them over the energetic chatter. The massive illustration of a ramen bowl is also helpful for those new to the dish. Do note that service can be a little slow. Took quite a while for the cold appetizer to come (at least 25 minutes). The Goma Kikyu Cucumber was beautiful presentation-wise but the cucumber was not marinated and was therefore rather dry. Not bad though, and the spices added a nice kick. Quite good with the sesame oil, but left something to be desired. Adding a little bit of soy sauce does the trick. The Dracula Tonkotsu had a wonderful thick broth and noodles cooked to perfection. The char siu was also excellent. A very good dish, but nothing in particular stood out. Overall, a pretty good restaurant, if you're willing to wait a while for the food.

First time at this Shoryu branch. Still find it weird that the staff greet in Japanese even though they aren't Japanese . We continued speaking Japanese after the initial 'irasshaimase' but that totally confused them . Shoryu's not too bad for a chain. The house tonkotsu is ok. We also got some takoyaki which was ok. The restaurant is actually bigger than what the facade makes it feel to be, much more seating inside.

We had a delicious soup. A bit expensive I think. Not for everyday takeaway orders. 14.00£ for one chicken soup...

Extremely expensive and not so high quality for the price. The soup was lukewarm and bad customer service even though they are Japanese.

Also they seem pretty Covid conscious with the screens dividing between the tables. I ordered the Menya Ramen which is essentially the regular Tonkatsu Ramen. I really appreciate the fact that this one already had a soft-boiled egg in it which I always think is the best part about ramen, and this one is no different. Wasn't the biggest fan of the chasu pork, but I did appreciate the seaweed as well as the rich broth. I thought the amount the gave was also quite a bit for the price, especially with the amount of noodles they had. Overall, pretty great experience at Menya. Will definitely come back for more!

I had the miso, very flavorful, chasu pork was perfect, just enough fat to be flavorful, very tender. Gyoza we're solid and the kimchee was very good. My son and I traded for a taste and next time I am going for the Menya Ramen, no spice. It was so savory, subtle, I wanted the bowl to be bottomless. Service was as prompt as possible for a Sunday afternoon after the museum. Line went fast. Thank you for the amazing meal.

Upon entry, the staff greeted you warmly and were on point to execute a perfectly designed bowl of ramen for your eating pleasure. I honestly felt guilty from the way I enjoyed my ramen given how much my oldest daughter loves the food. I appreciated how open the staff was to making my bowl "extra" spicy and adding yet another egg even though it wasn't specifically on the menu but satisfied my particular desire. What added to the "realness" of the resturant was the steady flow of what seemed to be true ramen experts coming in and navigating the scene, menu, and food at lightning speed with even better eating results. If ramen is your thing, then you NEED to check out this place. Definitely one of the top spots for Ramen I've been to in all my travels.
