After 10 days in the UK, we were ready for a break from pub food and stumbled upon Lanzhou Noodle Bar in Covent Garden -- such a great find! Definitely not the place for a long, lingering dinner -- this is quick, tasty, and casual dining. The noodles are made fresh on-site, and you can actually watch them being pulled, which is really fun to see. The main floor seating area is small, with three 6-person (if they're skinny) picnic bench-style tables so you WILL be seated with strangers. In the wintertime they keep the front door open so everyone eats with their coats on (besides, there's no place to hang them). But the noodles and soup are delicious, the service is fast, and you're in and out in minutes. Once sat was given NO WATER, yelled at some more, told them to cancel the soup and they yelled at us about the soup. Did I forget, they were yelling at us? I saw way too many positive reviews of this place and knew we had to go there. Its quite a small place and turns out they had more seating below. My girlfriend wasn't thrilled that we had to share a table, but once she saw the dishes coming by, that thankfully faded away. We took a shot at their chicken fried rice which had snowpeas mini corns and chunks of carrots in it. The next dish was a beautiful chicken chow mein which freshly made noodles that we witnessed made as you walked in. We also ordered pan fried dumplings which was crispy perfect and amazingly delicious. The beef dish we ordered was the green garlic fried beef that was out of this world amazing. We took the rest home and definitely recommend this place, which isn't officially in Chinatown, but close. It honestly takes the prize as numero uno in my opinion of any restaurant in London. The next day we were walking in Chinatown and the food and restaurants were pretty busy. So, I remembered this restaurant which actually has Chinese letters for the business name, so I am happy to understand what the name is here on Yelp. Anyway, I ordered a two entree plate with an egg roll. It was lo mein with chicken and black bean sauce and chicken and mushrooms. We each ordered the same meal. I thought it was very good. The food was served hot and stayed that way despite us sitting outside in the chilly air. They have inside seating but it was very crowded. The egg roll was pretty good. Prices were reasonable. Totally rad hole-in-the-wall restaurant. They've got genuine food (served by genuine people) at a very reasonable price point. Servings are very generous. I typically order the stewed beef noodle soup with dao xiao mian noodles, and they have chili oil/crisp at the table that you can add to give it a kick. Their noodles are hand-pulled/hand-made/hand-cut, and you can SEE the staff making your noodles/dish after you order it. Wok fired goodness as well; if you don't want soup they've got wok noodles, fried rice, all of it. THE MENU IS ABSOLUTELY GINORMOUS- if you're confused ask someone in line or the staff for a recommendation. All around 10/5 stars, I highly recommend that you avoid nearby tourist trap Chinatown if you're in the mood for some good noodles and head here. I must warm you: the servings are HUGE. The teens loved their food (Dan Dan noodles, which was a soup dish, not just noodles) and red oil wontons. The spring rolls are LARGE and very bland; the steamed dumplings were just "porky" to me, also bland. My chicken with garlic sauce was fine but husband's prawns were also bland, with very little flavor. Worst experience of my life. The staff yelled at my table of friends and scammed us, stole our credit card information, and charged us for things we didn't even ask for. Quick noodle place if you're at Rio. I love their hot sauce located by the self service sauce bar. I usually love oxtail, but found it quite hard and overcooked here. My favorite is the tendon knife cut noodles soup. Tendon always melts in your mouth and I love the chewiness of the noodle. The broth is perfect too. It doesn't make me thirsty afterwards (unlike some noodle soups at other establishments) and feels light and not oily at all yet packed with flavor. The noodles are quickly delivered right after your order so you may have to eat fast or your soup will get cold. I wish the bowls were more insulating. When I saw this place I knew it was it!!! They had all the sauces on the tables like I like it! I ordered the Dan Dan noodle- which in Taiwanese kitchens is a dry noodle and not with soup like they prepared it. It was very different than I expected but still delicious.
