If it's not already overwhelmingly, obvious my husband and I love Asian food so when we came to London and found out there was a Chinatown there was no doubt we had to stop by and grab some food. At first walking through Chinatown, I was overwhelmed with all the options and all the delicious smelling food but the very nice people at Shanghai Modern came out and helped us review their menu. With a party of five we decided we would just order several things that looked good, I can confirm this was 100% the right decision. We ordered some dumplings, we ordered some entrees, we even ordered some pecking duck and everything was delicious and the staff were so helpful. My favorite dish was probably the spicy chicken and the soup dumplings. This place was excellent for bigger groups. I would absolutely go back to Shanghai Modern!

Went tonight after a show to grab food waited in line for about 15 min. Overall the food was good and would go again. The dumplings weren't anything special just standard dumplings missing a tad of flavor and only 4 dumplings. I would not order the dumplings again. The house fried rice was light and fluffy and had pork and shrimp. Would order this again. I had never had this shrimp dish before. It does have a strong shrimp taste from the shrimp paste but I really enjoyed it. The beans were crisp and fresh which I really enjoyed #117 House Fried rice 4/5 #40 Pan fried pork dumplings 2.5/4 #305 shrimp with green beans and Malaysian shrimp paste 4/5

This is now called China Modern. The food is great with many veggie options. Service is also great as they don't rush you to order. Very good portions and the ambiance is great. The restrooms are clean and decent. It did not disappoint! They charge for the house tea, which is a traditional Chinese jasmine tea. I would love to be back and visit again when I'm back in London.

While I have to preface this review with a update on the name of the restaurant. It is now called China Modern. My review is for the newly named China Modern. What ever you want to call it this restaurant gave us such amazing food that we ate here three times in as many days. It is situated in the middle of China town and we had the best Chinese food I have ever had no exaggeration. I used to live in San Francisco which has really good Chinese food and I have travelled extensively throughout Asia. This place was amazing. The hot and sour soup was spectacular. The shrimp dim sum was delicious. The spicy beef was off the chain. We also had hot Chinese tea with each meal which was really good. This place is a place I will dream of when thinking about our trip to London. The service was excellent and the recommendations the staff offered were always spot on. The restaurant is a good size and can accommodate groups of up to ten people. I can't wait to visit again next time.

To end our first day during our London honeymoon, my wife and I decided to go to London's Chinatown for dinner. Even on a Sunday night, most places had long waits or were too crammed indoors for our comfort. Luckily, we found Shanghai Modern that had outdoor seating which was not taken yet but the staff agreed to serve us outside anyways. We ordered veggie dumplings, lamb with cumin, and brisket noodle soup. We also drank their delicious mocktails, one which had banana and another which was a punch. For the Queen's Jubilee they served custard and pork buns with the Union Jack on top and we ate the custard ones which were delicious. We highly recommend this place for their great food and service. In fact, it may be the best Chinese food we ever ate.

Everything was amazing. The atmosphere was relaxed and fun. The food was all super fresh...especially the seafood. The chicken satay with curry sauce was out of this world. Give it a try.

Food wise, I wouldn't it is the best Chinese I have ever been to but it's very good food and worth going if you want upscale Chinese without the crazyness of central London/Chinatown. We shared for starters the spicy sechuan aurbergine (a must order), mushroom buns (as nice as the ones from aWong) deep fried green beans (also a must) and the crispy duck ( Im never a fan but aWong and Kym's probably have the best ones and amazing plum sauce) For mains we tried the three treasure (soya chicken, iberico pork char sui and crispy pork). I think my favourite was the crispy pork. Its a good way of tasting all the rotisserie but if you are super hungry I would recommend ordering 2 of the rotisserie separetely. As for desserts, we tried the Pineapple bun and the cherry ice cream both lovely. Awong is definitly the king of custard. although I think the custard bun from aWong just beat everything lolol.

Victoria set the stage and steered me to a sampling that did not disappoint. Egg roll - not your typical egg roll, enshrined in a crispy rice shell, lightly fried to perfection, accompanied by a tangy sweet dipping delight. Followed by the mushroom steamed buns, and capped off by the most spectacular pork and shrimp boa boa, perfectly spicy, fully satisfying, a work of art. The service was spectacular and matched the experience. Make this a stop on your foodie tour of London.

It is an unassuming little Chinese take away place squashed between a men's barber shop and a second hand watch store and until I stopped in front of it by chance, I thought the barber shop and watch shop were direct neighbours! When I walked in I instantly thought of 2 films: 'Big Trouble in Little China' and 'Blade Runner'. Why? Honestly, I couldn't put my finger on it but I think it was because this is a tiny, teeny, place that looks family run and authentic. Not sure what I'm babbling on about here, I'll just get to the food... They have a lunch menu that is just £6, for which you get a starter and a main course with your choice of boiled or egg fried rice or noodles. The food is cooked freshly in front of you, is quite copious and tastes pretty damn good. I can thoroughly recommend the prawn sesame toast as a starter. Oh, important to mention that they have trouble getting more than 3 customers in the place at a time, be ready for a tight fit while you wait. A good take away lunch spot for those not wanting to settle for a sandwich, crisps and a can of pop - let's face it, that will cost you more than £6 at lunch in this part of town!
