Originally I was going to meet family here for a meal (most likely Chinese food) but life happened and it wasn't logistically possible this trip. Before leaving London, I had to have Chinese food at least once. My relatives living here mentioned it was pretty good so I had to see for myself. I looked on Yelp and found Gold Mine. It wasn't too far away from us and the pics looked good. Reviews were mostly all good too so we decided to dine here as our last dinner in London. It'll also be a month before we get to eat rice again so we had to get our last fix in. The restaurant is spacious and a typical looking Chinese restaurant. Staff here all speak proficient English and Chinese. Most of the customers were Chinese so that was a good sign. Mink and I took a look at the menu and ordered Hot & Sour Soup (Chicken and Seafood), Half Roast Duck Cantonese Style with no bones, Salted Fish Fried Rice with Diced Chicken and Hot Tea. It didn't take long for our order to get to us because we ordered as the restaurant started filling up and beat the dinner rush. By the time our order got to us, the restaurant was full. The food overall was quite good so we can see why. We did add gratuity but felt a little pressured to do so when paying but overall, it was a good experience dining here. read more

We decided to go to Chinatown to ensure authenticy and found this family-owned restaurant that specializes in Hong Kong style Chinese food. Gold Mine did not disappoint. Gold Mine specializes in BBQ roasted meats. So of course we had to try it and their BBQ roast duck is about the best as you can get. It was succulent and nicely seasoned for that perfect bite. We also ordered the traditional Cantonese style fresh steamed fish (sea bass) with ginger and green onions. Perfectly prepared and delicious. The place definitely gives me vibes of eating in a Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong. Service was attentive and good. Ambiance is as you would expect for a typical simple family owned Chinese restaurants, but the food is undoubtedly top notch. After a trip to Italy and Malta with full of pasta and pizza food, I was ready to enjoy a different style of food. My mom chose this restaurant's before it was a short walk from Piccadilly circles. We waited for 5 mins and we was called. The place is not big but we seat comfortably with a table of 3. Service was great and food delivery was quick. They did a great job to get turn around. We ordered won ton noodles soup; fired rice, beef chow fun and Sui Mai. All food came out hot and delicious. Tea was hot and all comfort food in our stomach. This is a great place if you are staying near Bayswater and in the mood for some good Cantonese food. The service is efficient and the menu is diverse and not overly complicated. I ordered the roast crispy pork belly over rice, with some stir fried Chinese broccoli. My daughter got the same dish and when she didn't finish it I polished hers off because it was so good! Had dinner here on a Saturday night at 7pm and the place was JAMMIN'. Waited about 10 minutes for two of us but the entire time we were there, the dining room was FULL. Incredibly authentic (and crispy) duck seems to be the specialty here. Very reasonably priced in a great neighborhood. Also tried the beef and noodles (my personal favorite) and the vegetable spring rolls. Most dishes here are served family style, meant to be shared. So many reviews extolling the roast duck at Gold mine on Yelp, that I had bookmarked it eons ago. For some reason, I'd never eaten here though. (I have lunch in this area every 7-10 days and end up at My default picks for Thai or Spanish food most of the time) This time I set out determined to eat the roast duck at Gold Mine and check what the fuss was all about. Oh my! That duck was gorgeous! The fat melting in the mouth was like a beautiful piece of pork fat - I've never tasted duck fat like that & at the same time the skin was crispy too and the meat ever so tender. My favourite meat is pork, but the barbecued pork (also good) did not hold a candle to this roast duck! I chose the Singapore vermicelli noodles to go with my meal. They were just what I wanted - really thin fine noodles, fried up street food style and just perfect with the fat of that perfect duck. All 3 dishes for 22£. I've got to take the family here to try this duck. I was lucky to not have to brave a queue at 2:30pm, but the restaurant was quite full. However, I must say that standing in line would be worth it for this roast duck. Just the duck & a side of noodles or rice would be perfect. read more

Ah, its been a while since I've been to Gold Mine, and after my recent meal I kicked myself for not coming back earlier! They've now expanded to take over the next door restaurant, so they have loads of tables and space, so while you still have to wait without a reservation, the wait is much shorter. Talking about famous Cantonese Roast Duck. This restaurant has also one of the best cantonese roast duck in London. Rumour has it that the chefs from Four Seasons actually worked here for some time before going back to Four Seasons again. Unsure the reason. Dispute?? Anyway, I have to say the tenderness of the duck here is equal to the one in Four Seasons. No difference. The difference lies in the ratio of the fat of the duck and the sauce that accompanies the duck. The duck fat here is less compared to Four Seasons and is more lean. So healthier. That said, who in the right mind would want to eat Cantonese Roast Duck and be healthy. So this is negligible. The sauce which accompanies the duck here however seems to be more to the savoury side compared to the one in Four Seasons. The one in Four Seasons is slightly sweeter. I prefer the Four Seasons slightly sweeter version. I do not see much difference in the duck to be honest. Both of them were cooked similarly. The other chinese food here I cannot comment much as I haven't really tried much. But probably a bit slightly better than Four Seasons. The staff here are also much nicer and more polite compared to the one in Four Seasons. You expect to be scolded and shouted at in Four Seasons. To those who cannot stand rude staff and long queues, I would probably recommend Gold Mine. read more

A friend of mine took me there two weeks ago. He said they had really good duck, and I was like, oh, well, you know, I've had good duck before. My Vietnamese aunt actually makes the best duck in the workd. But sounds cool. But that duck is AMAZING (almost as good as my aunt's). The place is quite successful so you might have to wait a little bit but it is worth it (I don't say that very often, sadly for someone who lives in London I'm not a huge fan of queuing for food). We shared a £8.50 portion of duck (obviously), some garlic veggies that were just crunchy and savoury and perfect, and some salt and pepper squid - very good but I could never eat a whole plate of that by myself, it's not very light! You are either a Gold Mine duck fan or a Four Seasons one and I'm definitely a die hard Gold Mine fan. Gold Mine ducks are usually fattier than Four Season ducks which make them much juicier. I have transported their duck by hand via plane for family members who just love it so much - if you let the Gold Mine staff know, they will make the necessary arrangements for you so it still tastes good after 12 hours across oceans! This place does excellent duck off the bone. The interior is clean and pleasant. Each dish is good for sharing. The spinach we ordered could have comfortably fed 4-5 people. The curried lamb was quite delicious too, lots of cinnamon and star anise in it. Soup was a simple chicken and sweetcorn and there was nothing wrong at all with it. In all, this place is special not because it does anything extremely well, but because it does almost everything right with little fuss. The limited dessert range was disappointing, but it's likely because they were about to close when we wanted to order this. We managed to order a red bean pastry dessert which was probably frozen and a little oily without the normally customary sago pudding dessert. In all, if you're looking for some decent Chinese around Bayswater and don't want to risk disappointment, then Gold Mine is the safe bet. There are a lot of cantonese people that eat here. A good sign. Otherwise there are plenty of Malaysian restaurants around due to the ex-pat community, and the nearby Malaysian hall, but the quality of these places aren't close to the cuisine you'd actually find in Malaysia. I love roast duck and gai lan, so I had reasonably high expectations and fortunately it did not disappoint. A little surprise bonus was the extra sauce they gave me... BEWARE DISHONEST RESTAURANT! PLEASE AVOID AS YOU CAN BE POTENTIALLY RIPPED OFF BY THEM. WILL TRY TO MAKE YOU DOUBLE TIP AND SERVE YOU UNDERSIZED PORTIONS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. They gave us a non itemised bill and immediately asked us to add service charge. Wasn't until we questioned them and tried checking the bill with no prices that they finally gave us an itemised bill showing it was already added which they clearly tried to hide while trying to trick us into paying double/additional service charge. Roast duck was deboned even though not asked which is a typical known way to disguise a way smaller portion than the half we ordered which they plump up with hidden vegetables below. These tactics are unfortunately are known for ripping off westerners and still around but am Chinese yet they still tried these obvious underhand tactics. Check other low scoring reviews and you will see the same comments. Unfortunately food is quite good (albeit reduced portions) and I suspect most customers are too trusting/good nature to known they have been ripped off hence the high google rating. Disgraceful owners to allow this, hope they get called out more often. You should be ashamed of yourself and change your ways! read more
