    Roasted duck Cantonese style
    Lexi M.

Best Chinese I've had since being in China. It's so close to the real thing that it's practically the real thing. Both the food and atmosphere are so authentically Chinese, I felt like I was back in Chengdu:) The roasted duck was fresh, fatty, and flavorful. The service was extremely fast. We also tried the dumplings, which were not as good as the ones I've had in China but they were still tasty. The egg fried rice added a shwae element to our experience as well. I'm so impressed by this hole in the wall!!!

Beef chow fun and seafood pan fried noodles

My husband and I decided to pop in here for dinner tonight as we were craving Chinese food. We ordered the 3 BBQ meats with rice combo, beef chow fun, and seafood pan fried noodles...all of which were delicious! However, the service was definitely the downfall as it was pretty dismissive. Not once were we offered any tea or water, and we had to continually ask for small dinner plates and condiments (since our waitress kept forgetting). If you can look past the poor service, this would be a great spot for some authentic Cantonese-style food. 3 stars.

I came here for dinner with a few friends when I was in London. I have been here for dinner a couple times now. There was a bit of a wait, but I expected this since we were a party of 5 people. They got us in as soon as they could. We started off with the crispy duck, which I must say, was excellent! The crispy duck is the reason why we come to this restaurant. It has great flavor, moist, and is crispy on the outside. The vegetables, wonton wrappers, and sauce that comes with it goes great with the crispy duck. We also started with the crispy wontons filled with fish. These were certainly interesting. They weren't really my thing because I didn't expect there to be fish in them, but they were interesting to try. For dinner, I got pork noodles. This was pretty good. The portions were very generous. I thought that all staff members were polite and nice, but the service was not so great. A couple of times we asked for more water and more wonton wrappers and never got them. We had to try and track down the servers. As far as price goes, it was fair for London. The restaurant was clean, but very crammed. The tables are very close together, so you have to move your chair whenever someone wants to get out. Overall, EXCELLENT crispy duck (highly recommend), fair prices, and nice staff but could have more attentive service.

I love this place and especially the crispy duck. I believe that's what they are know for. There's always a queue at this place so either eat an early or late dinner. We always get the crispy duck and the crispy shredded beef. The BBQ duck is also very delicious and so is the pork belly. You can actually order a three meat combo dish and have all these to try if you wish. A bit of a sampler dish really. The beef cooked in a hotpot is another favorite of mine as well as the Kai Lan with garlic sauce. Every time I come back to London I make dinner here a priority. The service is pretty typical of a Chinese restaurant... Bad. But the food makes up for it!

I finally relented and made the pilgrimage to Bayswater and Four Seasons. I'd been hearing about this place from friends, relatives and acquaintances...really anybody who'd spent any time at all in London. I was sick about hearing about how good the duck was and how there was no duck in Singapore like it. I figured that this was a relative impossibility. Also, I never actually thought that I'd actually go to a Chinese restaurant in London, one of the great restaurant towns, and in my book one of the greatest. So I finally made a detour from my usual stop, St John and made the trek out to Bayswater. Ok. It's all true. The duck is good, "to die for" good. The skin is crispy, the meat tender and layered with fat? How is this possible, marbling on duck flesh?? I am unimpressed by duck. It'll have to be a goose and then roasted and sampled fresh from the chopping block in Kowloon before I have anything worthwhile to say...ok, so I'm a roast fowl snob. Why cannot meh? But the duck at Four Seasons made me want to use words and lyrics that I reserve for pork belly. I actually closed my eyes, I'm ashamed to say...for duck?? But it is that good. Four Seasons is crowded and the service brusque. As I've said time and time before, ambience is entirely irrelevant if you came out for the food, because only the food matters. And yes, Four Seasons could afford to be more of a pit and a dive, staffed by harridans and lepers and I'd still be a devotee.

This is extremely important before I provide my review. I want you to order the correct duck. Order the Cantonese Roast Duck. NOT the Aromatic Crispy Duck. The Aromatic Crispy Duck does not exist in the Chinese world and it is a westernised deep fried duck like anything else that Westerners love to eat. I see a lot of people ordering the wrong version of the duck. The pictures that I have posted here are the ones you want to order. Not the one which looks crispy / deep fried. Continue... If you are ever in need of a juicy, fatty and flavourful Cantonese roast duck, this is the only place to go. I probably have been to Chinese restaurants around the world and the roast duck here is still world class and best. I want to say it is only my opinion but I think a few others say so too. I haven't tried most of the Chinese food as most of the time I am here, I am just after the famous duck. Order half of it with a steamed rice. Hell, just order the whole duck! The sweet and salty soya sauce gravy goes along with it really well. You need the steamed rice to cut through the fat. You can order it with bones like how the Chinese likes it or deboned. Although that said, I have been told off before during a peak time that I couldn't order it deboned as they won't have enough time. When you arrive go straight in past the queue if there is one and put your name down on their list with the person packing or preparing the food at the front of the restaurant. They will call you once they have a table for your party. However, I just have a word of warning for those who are new to this place. In most Asian countries, the restaurants lack customer service. It is the same here. Expect poor customer service with no smiles and rude head 'maitre d's who will take your order. It depends on their mood you know. They will only sit you once all your parties have arrived so make sure you get all your parties in before you ask for a table or you will get scolded. They are the best you know. If you don't like it, there is the door. You may leave anytime. It is not like they have no other customers waiting in line. Lol. That said, please look beyond the customer service for the food quality. When I say it is the best, it is the very best. It is also extremely good value. Half whole duck for £13.80 and whole duck for £23.80. Even if you go to the finest restaurant in London, they will be more expensive than these best ducks. Go ahead, buy the whole duck, go home and indulge! I urge you guys to come.

Legit. Came here at 9 pm on a Sunday, there was a short wait. Roasted duck (Cantonese style) was very good. Fatty, crispy skin, full of flavour. It's a little bit greasy, but tasted really good if you don't over dose. Crispy pork was ok, it wasn't very well presented (looks nothing like the photo). Too much meat, not enough skin. It's a very authentic Cantonese bbq restaurant. It's quite popular so expect to wait for a bit if you visit during rush hour. There are also two branches in Chinatown.

    Duck, mmm

I have been to Four seasons so many times, and I have never been surprised to find a queue of people outside and there is only one reason for this, the duck in this place is second to none, so succulent and tasty. Writing this is even making my mouth water. It honestly is delicious. However, in contrast, the service in this place is terrible, the staff make no qualms in letting you know that once you have finished your food (in my case it is always the duck), they want you out. It's a struggle for them to smile but even in me knowing this, I still go back, as so many do. The duck is out of this world. As for the décor, there is nothing special inside, just tables and chairs. It is a small restaurant, but I have heard that they will be expanding as there really is a demand for it. Simply, this is the greatest tasting duck I have ever had. I had a lot of duck growing up as my dad once had a shop on the edge on Chinatown, and I had it for lunch many a time, so I know what a good duck is. Thumbs up, 10 out of 10, go Four Seasons. My advice would be to go in a large group so that the staff do not give you looks to hurry you out.

One of the very many Soho Chinese restaurants on Gerrard Street. This is one of the smaller, less showy ones. It offers decent, though by no means spectacular food at competitive prices. Service is fairly efficient and, also, friendlier than usual in this area. But, then, as a frequent visitor to Chinese restaurants, you don't expect too much in terms of courtesy. When I ate there I tried three different dishes, all mains (Don't order rice at any of these places, it's a rip off and will only keep from eating enough of the *real* food): Cooked chicken with ginger (on the bone!), a mix of three types of grilled meat, and king prawns. See my photos. Everything was okay, nothing was outstanding. But in all fairness, the prices were on the lower end of Gerrard Street. After all, this is tourist area. When I was there, most of the other visitors were Chinese (might still be tourists of course). The decor isn't much to write home about, and because it tends to be busy, it may not be the best place to linger when you're a couple or a group. Drinks selection, as usual, is rudimentary. I would recommend Chinese tea over inflated alcoholic drinks like Tsing Tao. There are plenty of good pubs near Leicester Sqaure for a beer after the meal.

Their claim to fame: roast duck, roast pork and pork w fried skin.

One has to travel outside of London's touristy Chinatown district to get decent Chinese food. I did so with my hunt for decent barbecued meats and saw good Yelp reviews here. It gets 4 stars bc: - it's claim to fame, their roast meat special (roast pork, pork w fried skin and roast duck) combo is to not too shabby. - I didn't experience Asian on Asian discrimination, which happens very often. I actually spoke to them in Cantonese to try this and was treated ok-well, and they even took time to say goodbye to me and didn't try to rush me when I was there alone, hogging up a table by myself on a Sunday around 1pm. (A busy time) - they try to proactively manage the crowds and try their best to fairly seat everyone based on when they come in. - fast service. - easy to get to, located on the Central line, one stop east of Nottinghill Gate I have a mixed view to their claim to fame. Their roast duck is not the most banging thing I have ever eaten. Far from that, it is average. The skin was also not the greatest, I don't really eat skin too much but did it here to give an accurate feedback. However, their roast pork is banging! The sauce they serve on the barbecued meats is on the sweet side, but goes very well with this assortment. They do offer you a side of chili oil which is surprisingly also on the sweet side, but I actually found it to be very nice and dashed that on my entire dish. I can't rate the other foods, but why try anything else than this place's name to fame? Note: Everything is relative, so I'm not going to rate this based on other food I've had say in HK or other countries. But to date the best duck I have ever had is actually located in Philadelphia, PA called "Sang Kee Duck House". They have locations near the University of PA and Chinatown.

The number of south-east Asian people in a Chinese restaurant is usually a pretty good indicator of the quality. Last time I tried to go to the Four Seasons I couldn't get in because there was an hour long wait to get in. Good sign. This time we were lucky and managed to snag a table almost immediately, despite a substantial line starting to develop. This place is famous for its roast duck so we immediately ordered that, along with some hot and sour soup, beef with green onions, sizzling prawns, and some fried rice. I ordered a Tsing Tao beer which I was delighted to have delivered to me in a can with one of those old school pull top tabs. Awesome. The soup came quickly enough and was hot and delicious. The entrees shortly followed and were also absolutely fantastic. Nice fresh vegetables, tender meat, flavorful prawns. The duck took a while and we had to ask where it was but the place was absolutely packed so I can't blame them for taking a little longer to bring their house special. All I have to say about their duck is this: Stop whatever you're doing, and go. Now. Their duck is like nothing I have ever had before. I'm not sure what they do with it, and frankly I don't care. I'm pretty sure there's some addictive substance or something involved because I just couldn't stop eating it. Crispy on the outside, tender and juicy in the middle. Absolutely perfect. The service was quick and a bit stilted but as I said, they were jam packed. They did well, all things considered. A truly impressive experience, one which I will be repeating many, many times.

I guess this is because its the closest to the Indian-Chinese food that he grew up with. I ordered via Hungry House which had an offer of free prawn crackers for bills above 15, but if you call them directly, they offer free dishes on each bill threshold. The food arrived quite quickly and was piping hot. The crackers were packed separately, so they hadn't crumbled. Quantities are large & prices are low, yet it is high on taste and quality. A perfect combination for takeaways & home delivery. The only 2 dishes that fell in the middling range were the pork dumplings because their wrapping was on the thicker side and the Thai red curry, that was more of a side dish than a curry. They tasted good, but did not meet my expectations, especially compared to the rest of the food. The roast pork fried rice and the chicken chowmein were very good, with lots of flavour and tender meat. Not too oily (the bane of many takeaway chowmeins) The sweet & sour chicken hong kong style was yummy and the first time that I was able to eat pineapple added in sweet and sour dishes because it wasnt too sweet or sour or squishy. The kung po pork with chilli was the standout dish of the day. Just the right amount of chilli without going over the top. Really loved the food from May's & I'm guessing that we will be ordering in from here whenever someone is in the mood for Chinese :) #YelpEveryDamnDay

Sadly, it has been my WORST meal ever in a Chinese restaurant, and I might even add that no self-respecting Chinese person will dine here, but this might seem a little harsh. So I'll say.. if you wish for truly authentic Chinese cuisine, AVOID Gung Ho at all cost. The restaurant does however do an excellent job of bastardizing Chinese food to suit western audiences, so The place was reasonably empty (only 2 other tables were taken) when I first arrived, although more patrons arrived during later on. The restaurant claims to be Sichuan, but try as you might.. you will find very limited Sichuan cuisine on the menu. Most of the dishes are Cantonese, with the ever popular sweet+sour/black bean sauce selection. My guess is, they are trying to differentiate themselves from other Chinese restaurants by calling themselves Sichuan, but sadly, this is misleading because you can only find a handful (and I truly mean only 4-5) of dishes under that name. Worse, they are not even authentically prepared. The bang bang chicken was very bland, and portions were horrifyingly small (think saucer). The fish with rice wine was horribly fishy (I'm serious about it being the worst fish dish I've ever tried), and even the seasoning of wine and MSG could not disguise the foulness of it. The coffee beef was a bit of a joke, as there was nary a hint of coffee aroma or taste to be found. This was part of the Chef's Speciality too! Portions were very small for every dish, but since the food wasn't particularly good, I was rather grateful! In the end, despite knowing I would not be full from the meal, I was determined not to order more dishes, as prices were a rip off (approx £9-12) and I simply refuse to pay for bad food. What utterly disgusted me was the service. While the waiters were not exactly rude, their attitudes were hardly warm towards us. They took a long time to come to our table (which, considering only 2 other tables were filled besides ours, the restaurant is overstaffed at that point!), although the staff hovered and lingered around the tables of other patrons. I was not surprised to see this pandering behavior directed towards the other diners who were Caucasians. Gung Ho is obviously a restaurant that aims its clientele towards serving Caucasian locals living around the area (West Hampstead, Finchley Road, etc). Most diners do not appear to have travel far, and as the evening progressed, more and more families turned up. None were Chinese though. If you wish for good Chinese food, you're better off dining at Royal China, which gives you better cuisine at similar prices. You also get better service, and will be exposed to a variety of authentic Cantonese cuisine. I hate to admit it, but my local Chinese takeaway gives me better food than Gung Ho. As I pointed out earlier, I left the restaurant still feeling a little hungry, and definitely unhappy with the very poor meal. In the end, we drove down West End Lane, and ended up grabbing a burger at GBK for comfort food. The ultimate insult - my burger made a far more satisfying meal!

It's my local favorite Chinese. Been here at least 5 times. Always spot-on food and service…read more I really wanted to give them 4-star but just had to balance out the 1-star unjustified review in my opinion so gave them 5! Food is classic well executed Chinese with warm, friendly and authentic atmosphere Recommended both for non fancy family occasions and a nice romantic (casual) dinner
