New Mayflower restaurant has always been a reliable choice for authentic Cantonese food although they also devote a page to the northern Chinese cuisine too. Don't be fooled by how small it looks and the lack of oriental diners in there and they tend to be seated at the basement where the larger tables are. The decor is the classic modern Chinese restaurant with its typical Chinese artwork scattered around the restaurant and the neatly dressed white tablecloths tables. Service is definitely a lot better and friendly then most Chinese restaurant in the area and most of them can speak English. Hot and sour soup (chicken) I think they used Chinkiang black fermented rice vinegar here which gave it that slight fermented taste in the soup. I much prefer white vinegar for a more cleaner taste but adapted to the flavour pretty quickly and end up appreciating the different textures in there such as the tofu and woodear fungus against the thick consistency of the soup. Seasoning was fine. Seasonal green, previous mushrooms and goji berry soup I love how the aromas of this soup and how light and comforting it was being a clear soup. It had a lovely subtle herbal taste to it sweetened by the goji berries whilst the shimeji mushrooms added delicate umami flavours. Very soothing. Pea shoots with preserved egg and salted egg The pea shoots were fresh and vivid green and seasoned perfectly. All its sweet flavours were still intact, boosted by the use of garlic. Both the preserved egg and salted egg added another dimension of saltiness where one added a more silky texture whereas the preserved egg added a nice bouncy texture. Mushrooms gave the dish a nice sweet earthy flavour. Ouch for being priced at £14.50 Shredded jelly fish with chilli This was okay but I would have preferred it more softer rather than crunchy. I also didn't find the V shape bowl suitable as all the sauce went to the bottom leaving the top lacking flavour. Those that were in the sauce were coated in a lovely aromatic chilli oil blend that gave it a good kick of heat as well as fragrant sesame oil notes. The roasted sesame seeds accentuated the sweet nutty flavour in the dish which was nice. Not worth £9.80 though. Pork rib in Chinese Herb soup Noodle (ho fun) Quite a generous portion. The broth was delicious and rich in herbal flavours. It's not for everyone's taste but lovely for those who liked that kind of bitterness. Tofu puffs were braised till soft, soaking up the flavours whilst adding a nice spongy texture and shiitake mushrooms added a sweet umami flavour. The pork ribs were very tender and still held a mild sweetness after being braised for broth. The noodles also came with a side of sweet soy sauce and chilli dipping for those who want to add a caramelised sweetness to the ribs. Shredded mushrooms and minced pork noodle casserole This dish was quite bland and lacked dimension even though seasoning was fine. Without much flavour or depth the egg noodles became quite lacklustre to eat. It was a shame as I enjoyed the textures of the soft tender mince pork and bouncy mushrooms coming together but none of it's taste were there, probably lost during the boiling process. The runny fried egg was nice though, giivng the dish a burst of yolkiness. I also added some of the kecap manis in there for flavour which made it more possible to eat. Shanghai dumplings These were delicious although the skin wasn't as skillfully made as some other restaurants being much thicker. However the stock inside was generous and fragrant with a nice juicy meatball inside giving it a burst of flavour when you bite into it. Came with a side of vinegar to add a nice zing to the flavours. For 3 dumplings it was heavily priced at £4.80. Prawn and chive cheung fun The rice pastry was thicker than some of the better ones and probably over steamed too giving it that slight stickiness. But a little coating of oil helped to smooth out the texture. The prawns and chive itself were wonderful, prawns being very fresh and plump giving it a nice bite and chive added a nice refreshing flavour across the dish. Came sitting on top a light soy sauce for seasoning. I did very much enjoy my visit to New Mayflower but the only thing that stops me from returning any time soon is the extremely high prices where I know I can get the same dishes in another Chinese restaurant in the area for 20%-25% cheaper. Better is the lunch deal where a few noodle and rice dishes are priced at £6.50 including a drink. However if you have the cash to splash and looking for a more authentic take on Cantonese cuisine than New Mayflower is a good choice. I suppose the more friendly service also makes up a bit for the deer prices.

Yes, you'll find loads of drunken people/tourists eating generic Anglo Chinese food, but what do expect at 2am on Shaftesbury Avenue when all the p!ssheads leave Soho?! The decor could do with a once over, but get past all of this & there is a genuinely authentic decent Cantonese menu, I've been coming here longer than I can remember! So my advice is to be adventurous, don't just stick to fried rice, sweet & sour, crispy duck, chow mein, you will be missing out. My lil bro is a regular here & the waiters call him Fei Jai(Fatboy!). Last time we were here we ordered, Prawn stuffed Chillies in Black Bean sauce, Pork Belly hotpot, Oyster & Japanese Tofu hotpot, Peashoots in Oyster sauce, Crispy sesame Squid, stir fy Cuttlefish with Garlic shoots & Lotus root, sizzling Veal on a hotplate, Chinese Broccolli in garlic & ginger, accompanied with plain rice......amazing. You won't find this stuff in your local Chinese. You see, there's another world of Chinese food out there, be daring, be adventurous, otherwise you'll be missing out & missing the point.

Considerably more talented at serving up a memorable dinner than dim-sum, it is nice to see that New Mayflower continues to be a splendid choice for a traditional Chinese dinner in Chinatown. The tofu (stuffed or steamed) is particularly well done. The fish (which is currently on a discount offer) makes for a healthy and hearty dish. The honey-glazed beef is ironically served on a cow-shaped hot plate and the portion of chicken is of a decent size. The only dish I had that could have been improved somewhat was the salt and chilli pepper pork chop that was a little too dry and sliced too thin. A welcome bonus comes at the end of the meal where you are given sweet oranges and a generous bowl of traditional red bean pudding. In essence, New Mayflower serves up a treat for dinner and if it manages to achieve dim-sum to the same standard it would be an all-round knock-out.

Nom! Nom! Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce, Duck and Rice, and Prawn Dumplings & Noodle Soup

Have not been here for quite a while, well not since it changed its name to New Mayflower. Used to come here often after clubbing as it is opened until 4am. We ended up here last night looking for a light supper, after Young Cheung has changed to Pho & Bun! So New Mayflower being one door away was the one, saving us a walk elsewhere. Not many restaurants do prawn dumplings in noodle soup well, and I was pleasantly surprised that the dumplings are huge here and you get a good eight pieces, and they were fresh and so delicious. It was like a bottomless pit, I was eating and eating and the bowl never seemed to finish. My companion had rice and duck, which I swapped some of my dumplings for, as it was too many, and the duck was really meaty and tasty too. We also ordered the Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce and these were nom, nom, too. Fresh and al dente, just how they should be. I find the vegetables dishes always comes at a price but the portions are large here and the quality so good, that you do not mind paying a little more. The service was friendly and brisk. They give you Chinese dessert and oranges after your meal, but we declined the dessert as it was quite late and we were also too stuffed! The waiter recommended their chili crab and fresh lobsters with noodles, and I remember, in the past, they are famed for their chili crab so will definitely come back to try them. It's been a while, but will try not to leave it so long to come back again, next time!

Black Pepper Beef on Sizzling Platter

Perfectly acceptable Cantonese style Chinese food in the theatre district. I recommend the salt and chili pork chops. The chops, black pepper beef steak on a sizling platter, steamed rice for one, and a large bottle of Evian water was £25.40 (including VAT and service). A bit pricy, but this place works if you're craving Chinese food while in London.

This was quite possibly the best Chinese food I've had. Every dish was prepared incredibly well, and with layered flavor.

It's definitely a young crowd/scene haha plenty of people on Friday evening and luckily were able to get seating upstairs Beautifully decorated but it'll be hard to hold a conversation since it's pretty noisy lol Pretty good variety of menu items, lots of Asian fusion dishes SO and I opt for their Crispy Aromatic Duck, Prawn and Chinese Chive Dumplings and Scallop Siu Mai Their Crispy Aromatic Duck was 5/5 -- crispy and not overly fried, great flavor too, SO and I really enjoyed it, funnily they bring it to you for display... then take it to the back to deconstruct, and then bring it back to you for grubbing afterwards haha Scallop Siu Mai and Prawn with Chinese Chive Dumplings were great too, a good filler for dinner, wishing it came with 4pc vs 3pc but I get it haha A pretty penny (or rather, pound heh) but it's London Worth a try if you like Crispy Duck!

Duck & Rice, Soho, London, England -- April 5…read more Our family of four with two kids ages 9 and 10 made our way to Duck & Rice after walking through the Chinatown area, which was absolutely packed and fun to explore, and we were looking for something lively with shareable dishes, and the overall experience felt energetic with some real highs and a few misses. Arrival and First Impressions The space has a strong personality with a mix of pub and restaurant energy and it felt busy from the moment we walked in, matching the chaos outside in Soho, but still relatively well controlled with a steady flow of service and a constant buzz that made it feel like a place always in motion. The Highlights Food came out quickly and leaned into that comfort style Chinese menu with a mix of dumplings and larger plates, and the soup dumplings were the clear favorite for the table with both kids fully on board which is always a win. The crispy duck with pancakes was also solid and more in line with what we expected, and overall the variety kept everyone engaged even if the kids stayed mostly in their comfort zone. The Challenges Portion sizes were a bit tricky for a family of four with several dishes coming in sets of three which meant ordering extra just to share evenly, and a few items missed the mark including shu mai that felt a bit dry. The duck and rice being served closer to room temperature was intentional to keep it tender but still felt a little off from expectation, and surprisingly there were no chili oil or similar condiments for the dumplings which would have helped quite a bit. The overall noise and energy level can also be a lot after a full day out. Final Thoughts This is a lively spot that fits right into the Soho and Chinatown energy and works well if you are looking for a fun fast paced meal with shareable dishes, but it is not without a few quirks and inconsistencies. We are glad we tried it and there are definitely things worth ordering, but with so many strong options nearby we would probably explore elsewhere next time, making it worth it for the experience but not a must return.

The staff and waitresses were all lovely, attentive, and made sure everything ran smoothly. We ordered a huge spread--pretty much the entire menu and then some--and everything was delicious. If you're sensitive to spice, I'd recommend staying away from the Sichuan soup. On the other hand, the clam-based soup was one of our favorites--comforting, flavorful, and perfect for balancing out the meal. Amazing food, amazing service, and a great atmosphere. Haidilao is absolutely worth the visit while in London.

Individual dishes are ordered via iPad. We got a large selection of meats, veggies, noodles, and some more unusual delicacies like beef cheek and colon(?). There are self serve stations for sauce making, and some small sides and desserts/fruits. I LOVED the seaweed salad there and got three helpings... not sure what goes into this but it was so yummy. Tissue boxes at the table are a nice touch for runny noses with the spicy broth! There's a bit of a show that comes with ordered hand pulled noodles! A staffer comes out and pulls and spins and dances with the noodles table side. I think they also sing for birthdays (seemed to be a couple of those around us).
