Cannot believe how substandard this place is. The concept of modeling a BeniHana style gourmet should be taken with more intention and sincerity. The "chefs" are mediocre and obviously "trained" on certain tricks but have zero skill and definitely zero showmanship. The food is haphazardly prepared by throwing excessive butter and oil on it and in the end you are served a bunch of side dish portions of cheap meat and cheap seafood. Worst experience yet, been going there 10 years once to twice a year, really pissed me off last night, between the hour wait, can't make reservations but as I'm stating there waiting I hear reservation for Smith, WTF... First of all if it wasn't for the chef "Johnny" I am not sure I would keep coming back here. Don't get me wrong the food is amazing. And of course its pricey, however, the drinks aren't refilled nearly enough, and I had a not so pleasant experience this time. I received a gift card that I was applying it towards my order. I also had a $10 off my order, the lady did give be cause I had a coupon for the San Marcos location that they would not accept. So they made good there. When I went to pay for my food using the gift card, coupon, and to finish it off with my ATM I was informed I couldn't use the gift card and the coupon together. I have never heard of such a thing. My mistake though, I didnt read the back of the gift card which did say I couldn't use it with any other offers or discounts. I have never been to a place that would not allow you to use a gift card with a coupon. Anyways, other then these two reasons I stated my visit was alright. We wait until "Johnny" can cook for us. Fell involve with his personality and his skills. Very friendly and accurate, makes the food absolutely mouth watering. My recommendations: Don't restrict the customers from using gift cards and a coupon at the same time. If you are given the gift card as a gift, why should you be penalized. read more

20 minute wait to be seated for teppan grill. No one else here? Desperate or short staffed?

if there was a picture next to sticky in the dictionary this place would be there. first things first we didn't have a reservation. understandable that we'd have to wait a little while to get a table. not a problem. the issue was that the person who took my number and told me the wait time, didn't actually put us onto the waitlist. so we were there waiting and waiting and the wait time had passed. my boyfriend goes in and asks what's going on, to which a girl proceeded to tell him that we weren't even in the system and that she'd just go ahead and seat us anyway. the table was sticky. the menus were sticky. the shot cup for my sake...was sticky. it's ridiculously loud in the restaurant. there are people whistling as if we're at a high school football game and shouting as if they were there too. although we ordered an appetizer it came with the rest of our food. so we kind of just sat there hungry until they brought everything out. overall I wouldn't recommend to anyone and I certainly wouldn't come back read more

I've been here before and have enjoyed it however today's experience made me never want to come back. It isn't a fast food priced meal so I'd expect some quality of service, and we received below average service. Our cook was arguing, yes arguing, with the waitress. Requested the manager to come to our table to 'handle the situation.' All of us thought it was a joke? But it wasn't. He kept apologizing because none of his 'tricks' were working, it seemed as if he was really new- which that's fine.... but to argue with our waitress in front of us and cause a big scene ruined our meal. Order the hot mess. One of my faves. I made the mistake of ordering a half roll on happy hour with my hot mess and boy was I full. If you like sushi and other Asian foods this is a great spot. I love this restaurant! Just not the one in Temecula. I go to the Shogun in Corona. I had been bragging about it to my mother so one day we decided to take her to this one since it was closer. That was a mistake. Our chef was drunk I swear. He was slurring his words, not making sense, and didn't get anyones order right. Its not like he couldnt ask us, i mean we were right there! It was awful. My rice was overcooked, my boyfriend asked for noodles and he got vegetables. He made a whole other dish no one asked for so he split it up and gave everyone some of it. He sang the whole time. Made a "train" while playing sea noises. Mind you I know how this act goes. I've been many times. Oh and don't get me started on the waitress. The girl next to me asked if they had some kind of orange chicken. She responded "well we have teriyaki chicken but its not orange." Really? I laughed at her quietly then the rest of the meal she was rude to me and only me. This girl had no idea about anything on the menu and it was just the worst service I'd ever had. Not that great the last few visits. We have been to shoguns a dozen or more times since it opened. It's been 3 to 4 star until recently. I am probably being nice giving it a 2. Service has been way lame. Started late, smaller portions (it seems), little or no service. We have to waive someone down. Last time we ordered Sushi to start with as the chef was going to be a while. We waited, then asked, finally the Sushi came towards the end of the actual dinner. We refused it and had to argue about it being taken off the bill. I wish it was better. Maybe I just got a bad deal twice in a row. I don't know. The place is not cheap and you expect a little more in service. Food quality is pretty good. No complaints there. read more

Wow, I am so happy I found this place. My Fiance' & I were looking for a place to go for our 4 year anniversary, & I am glad I ate here. Reasonable prices, sat by the sushi bar in our own quiet booth. Beautiful decorations. We usually go to Sushi Boat for cheap sushi, or KoKoRos if we wanna spend a little more. We shared 3 rolls, (THEY WERE AMAZING!) Crunchy Dragon, Salmon,& Caliente & we had assorted tempura. We usually never get full with sushi but we actually needed a to-go-box! The food and the service was very good. Quick and efficient. Eat in the dining room, unless you want the whole Japanese grill experience. You get the same food, it is much quieter and you can enjoy your dinner partner and not the cacophony of noise in the grill area. My problem with the restaurant is their advertising. I found an add for them in one of the coupon magazines that I receive in the mail. They advertised $6.99 sushi rolls, which I thought was a good price. When I got there I was told, no they didn't have $6.99 rolls, they had gone up to $8.29. This isn't a huge increase, but it is not what is in the add. I asked our server if he they would honor the price in the add, he said he would ask the manager. He came back a short time later and said that they would not honor that price, but they would take the coupons in the ad (not expired, by the way). Then the next week the same ad came out in the same magazine, with the same $6.99 price. Doing it once, is a mistake, doing it twice after it has been brought to your attention is bait and switch. read more

One of my students had recommended the place so I figured let's try it out. My boyfriend and I were looking forward to find a place that I will enjoy their sushi and he can have something else. I had the yakisoba which was decent. I also ordered yellowtail and salmon nigiri; that's where I went wrong. The fish was thicker than I have ever had anywhere else the rice was not meant to be sushi rice so it was hard. I asked for eel sauce to cover the horrible slimy taste the fish had but it took the waitress forever and a day. I figured I can try to tough it out but I couldn't cause I was still waiting for my drink after my boyfriend asked a different waitress for refills on our drinks. I was telling my boyfriend that was the last time I'm going there and the girl next to us was related to the manger or something cause that's when I started getting quicker service. When I finally got the eel sauce and tried to make the sushi appetizing but the fish was mushy and gooey, which was a first for me because I eat at different sushi restaurants and the fish is always thinner and fresher. He ordered the teriyaki lunch combo with fried rice. He said the rice taste like a bowl of onion. My sister ordered the same thing and hardly touch her plate. All I ask from the manager or whomever reads this is that you pick better staff to work on busy days, because the response I got after asking for my refill and eel sauce for the 3rd time was "oh yeah, that one!" Please use fresher fish and proper ingredients when making sushi, the whole walk to my car I was gagging from the thought of the texture that fish had. read more

We been coming for years. I was there yesterday and it was a very disappointing experience. After finishing our dinner at the sushi dining area, we look up and noticed 2 of the 4 sushi chefs blew their nose and continued cooking without washing their hands or moving away from the cooking area. Another one was changing the tv channel and proceeded to rub his eyes....talk about food contamination and health and safety issues. This really need to be corrected and they need to be trained to be clean and the area needs to be sainted. read more

Love the food. Though when I walked in for an early dinner with my son Destiny the hostess was very rude. Kept cutting me off when she asked a question. Her whole demeanor was horrible. Management needs to reevaluate the type of personality they want welcoming their guests. Only rated 2 stars because of the customer service. Well let's just say we changed our mind. I love the food but service was horrible from hostess Destiny to waitress and manager Alyssa. I can see why employees have no care and concern food their customers when their leadership displays the same qualities. Pretty sad after waiting for 15 minutes to be seating we sat at the grill for another 15-20 minutes and still never received the water I ordered. So we got up and left. I have been here many times but this time in particular was my best experience. Not only was the food amazing but our cook Harry was very much so on point. He kept us laughing and kept the mood going while he cooked for us. Sometimes it can be uncomfortable sitting by strangers but he kept us all engaged. We went here yesterday for my birthday, I had never been there. I had a party of ten with me, and we came close to closing. I was excited because I heard great things about this restaurant And was very hesitant to go but decided to give it a try. Our chef didn't talk to us, didn't preform a show, and took a long time cooking so I was very disappointed. We bought it to the attention of our waitress and she did apologize and tell us that he was new. I understand that, it happens. However she did tell the manager of the issue and all they did was take 20% off. We didn't even see the manager at all, they could have at least came and apologized personally. If you have a new guy, don't send him on a first time if he isn't comfortable and with a party of ten. Really disappointed with my first time experience at this location. read more

Great food and if you make reservations you won't wait more than enough time to have a drink at the bar, if you don't make reservations, your night will be wasted sitting around for an hour. The food is tasty but it does vary depending on what chef makes your food, if you're savvy you'll ask for extra this or that to make your meal exactly how you like it.
