We arrived on a Sunday evening after being away in Vernon for a weekend camping trip. It was considerably busy, we were quoted to wait 15 minutes. It seemed like forever cause we were starving but the quote time was accurate. This place is a little gem. Yes, it's very small and some may consider it to be quite cramped but it's a good place to check out if you you're craving quality sashimi. The menu is simple, there are only a few special rolls. We ordered 4 rolls (spicy tuna roll, special scallop roll, crunch roll, alaska roll), salmon sashimi and BBQ squid. No complaints, they were all very simple and just plain delicious. I'd like to emphasize how fresh the sashimi was, it was melts in your mouth. Ahhhh. Service was very friendly, the servers were very sweet. Shout out to the boyfriend again for showing me this awesome spot! Recommend :) P.S. This may be too much information but the women's washroom has a bidet attachment and it made my dining experience all the more better (please don't judge me) read more

This is the place with worst service and lowest quality I had ever in my life. I had come here for couple times because this is the only Japanese restaurant near from my home. Tonight, I went Shiro sushi with my boyfriend and we ordered "Tuna&Salmon Sashimi 9pcs". Honestly, the quality was pretty good, however, the amount of each salmon sashimi was not even half of tuna sashimi. My boyfriend and I doubted our eyes...and I asked the waiter if they changed the chef or not. He said "No." I told him this amount of salmon sashimi is not acceptable. He said "ok , I will tell my boss" and he would never come back for my concerns. Or moreover, I felt he tried to avoid the topic. My boyfriend and I are in love with Japanese food, eventually we still gave him the tip. But we felt extremely unrespectful treat, we were not happy when we left. This is my honest experience I had in Shiro sushi. We won't go there again anymore. * If I can update the photos, I would like to post it. Please help me to upload the photos somehow. I created Yelp account just for reflecting this situation. You can imagine how bad it was. read more

My love for sushi cannot be expressed in words. I'm glad I finally tried out Shiro because they make one of the best rolls I've ever had. We got the spicy chopped scallop, dynamite, and the negitoro roll. All the rolls were perfectly made. I especially like the dynamite roll-a freshly deep fried prawn wrapped with sprouts and lettuce. Bite sized deliciousness. The appetizer tempura plate was also good, not too overly battered, and the warm dipping sauce was a great complement. Service was excellent, the hot green tea was always refilled. A simple spot, with awesome rolls. I need to come here more often. read more

Bang for your buck Shiro is one of my favourite sushi spots in Vancouver. Some of the highlights include its intimate setting, the freshness and quality of not only the sashimi and sushi but the tofu and all else, how they always have hamachi kama on site and the great service. I highly recommend this sushi restaurant for its value, the uni and unagi are always my favourites. Check out my pics! read more

Shiro has been around forever. Their sushi is still to this day high quality. This is an authentic, Japanese owned restaurant that concentrates on providing fresh sushi. The pieces of sashimi are a tiny bit smaller/thinner than other places for the same price, but it's not the farmed stuff. Come early to avoid the wait and a spot in their parking lot. Otherwise, there's plenty of street parking. They do get pretty busy and you feel obligated to eat quickly so other patrons can get seated. Our bill came before we asked for it as a subtle hint, but they never forced us to leave. read more

We had sushi takeout for dinner last night. Edamame Miso soup Shrimp tempura Philadelphia Roll Crunch Roll Kazu Roll The quality of the sushi was tasty! Each package came with wasabi and ginger. We got the shrimp tempura sauce and ponzu sauce. Super delish! Very simple and straight to the point. read more

Very high quality sushi and sashimi. They serve a very nice, well marbled, Toro Skip everything else. Tempura lacks that panko crunch; The rice dishes are kind of on the Osaka-mushy side (you know what I mean if you've done food tours of Osaka) I come back here when none of my other favourites are open. read more

We tried this place last night based on the yelp reviews and we enjoyed our experience there. The weather has been hot and we weren't super hungry. The servers there were cool and didn't pressure us to order more (even though we did later cause the food was good). We have the deluxe assorted sushi, bbq salmon belly and ebi mayo to start. The sushi was very good and fresh, the bbq salmon belly was quite good and tasty, we ended ordering a 2nd one. The ebi mayo was pretty good, fresh and hot. They had some sort of clam in the sushi, the server explained it is a twisted looking clam, it was tasty. We then ordered a Ten Zaru Soba, cold noodles with tempura on a hot day. It was nice. Thiis place has good food, casual atmosphere and I noticed several Japanese patrons having sushi, so it must be good! read more

They always have attentive servers and good lunch deals! We always get the lunch special G that has tonkatsu (mini size), sashimi (3 pcs tuna, 2 pcs wild salmon), Tekka maki, bc roll, appetizer tempura (2 prawns, 3 veggies) and a small egg plant dish. The last call for lunch is at 2:15, and I've had times when they have sold out of bc rolls and salmon. The lunch set g in the case came with California roll and tuna sashimi instead of the BC and Salmon :( They didn't warn me about the replacement so I wasn't too thrilled, but now I just make sure I don't show up near closing time. The sashimi quality is always excellent. The tempura batter is nice and light. The rolls are excellent. I've tried some of their other lunch combos but always go back to lunch set G :) read more

A straight-up, down-to-earth, Japanese joint! Even if you have never stepped into the realms of this neighbourhood restaurant, you have undoubtedly driven past the unremarkable strip mall which houses "Shiro". Can't remember how long this restaurant has been around,... "it's an oldie, but a goodie". Offering all the standard Japanese fare found at most other similar restaurants in the city. Variety of offerings are not overwhelming. Which is a good thing for those who are indecisive. What makes this restaurant 'stand out', is the QUALITY of the food. The nigiri sushi and sashimi are fresh fresh fresh! And you will not find any 'farmed salmon'... no siree! Can get quite busy here during dinner hours. Don't be surprised if you are waiting outside in the parking lot for a table. The restaurant has even placed a heat lamp outside their door for their "waiting" patrons. How thoughtful! To experience the same great food and bento specials, make a visit during LUNCH time. Less wait! Great specials. As noted by other fellow "yelpers", BENTO BOX G is a good choice - quality + quantity for a great price of $11.50. Other bento box specials start from $8.50. Overall portions of the rest of the menu is pretty average. Prices are equally average. Not cheap, but not expensive. Atmosphere is not fancy but "homey". It is an unpretentious restaurant with fresh and fabulous food. read more

Delicious sashimi, rolls and nigiri. This is one of the authentic little gems that we have in Vancouver. I would highly recommend that you go for a plate of assorted sashimi and then order your favorite nigiri, which would be: uni, seabream, hamachi, yellowtail, salmon, toro, red tuna, sweet ebi, scallop and tomago. I love them! I also love their unagi don as well. I would recommend that. Lunch is less people and I would recommend going there for some sushi and sashimi as well as getting their tuna avocado don which is amazing! Dinner will be a bit harder as it is quite packed and they don't take reservations. if you want to go with more than 2 people then put your name down and walk around to shave off some calories before the feasting and then come back, might be a 30-40 min wait sometimes. They will always end the meal w a delicious pocky snack as well. I really loved their fish as it is beautifully and skillfully cut and fresh all the time. It is not v pricey maybe just a level above average but completely worth it. If it is not in your budget then i would recommend Sushi Mania. There are a couple of spots in their little lot of parking. However just turn down 11th or 10th and find parking on the side streets there or even on the side ones parallel to the restaurant. Just within a 5 min walking radius and you will find your free parking:) Enjoy! read more

I stopped in for some take-out on my way home yesterday, and after looking over the menu I was surprised at the lack of combos offered. Most sushi places have a list of combos that you can get since you obviously aren't going to eat just one roll, unless you're on the "supermodel diet," and even then you'd be eating a sushi roll with kleenex in the middle of it with no rice. Tasty! I ordered an oshinko roll, a veggie roll, a cucumber and avocado roll, a broccoli and miso dish and miso soup. I had a long night ahead of me, so I wanted to be prepared, and well, I like to eat. The prices were around the same price as other places, so I paid just over $14 for all that, but since I got it to go, I didn't leave a tip. (I don't usually tip when I get take-out, since I am not being waited on, not sure what the protocol is for that, but that's how I roll.) They brought me some tea for while I waited, but I was too busy on the phone to bother, and then my food arrived and I was on my way. Everything was good, the broccoli tasted kind of like it had been frozen and then thawed, it didn't have that extra crunchy freshly chopped taste, so I probably wouldn't get that dish again. I was bummed that there was mayo in my cuke & avocado roll, because it tastes so good without mayo, it seemed kind of an unnecessary evil. The veggie roll was meh... but I guess I have high expectations because there are so many veggies you could throw in that roll, but most places just seem to stick in lettuce, carrot and cukes. When I order a veggie roll I want a fat roll with the works in it, if its a vegetable, throw it in! One bonus, when you order at Shiro, you get a small pack of chocolate Pocky with your order. Yay! Honestly, after eating all that I was too stuffed to eat the Pocky, but it was a pretty cool free dessert! I'd probably be more apt to go back if they had veggie bento boxes or some kind of veggie combo, since trying to put one together for yourself requires too much brain power (for me anyways.) read more

This is our go-to spot for sushi. Amazing staff and chefs; simple and fresh ingredients; and just really great, good-quality sushi. FYI: This is a more authentic sushi spot. This is not the lunch combo box, $3 California roll spot. So yes, there is no "crunchy awesome roll" with mayo and deep fried bits, and expect a bit of a higher price for a really great tuna don. read more

Good local joint, yummy food. But I agree with some of the previous reviews that this is not a hidden gem or anything mindblowing. More like homey small restaurant serving good staple fare lol. Shiro - Japanese Near Me - Vancouver, British Columbia

Shiro is a small hidden gem tucked in a shopping plaza on Cambie next to Vijs. The restaurant may be small but the food is wonderful. My first encounter with Shiro was 30 years ago when my bff & her family lived in the area. Shiro was our neighbourhood hang out. Fast forward to 2019 & the food is just as wonderful (if not more tasty) as it was 30 years ago. Try the eggplant to die for. We had blue fin tuna which was a feature, pieces were large and ever so fresh and delectable. Thanks to the food gods that Shiro is still around & that there's another at least 30 years of providing Vancouverites with food pleasure. Remember try to get there early as the place is small and fills up quickly. Staff is awesome and welcoming. I promise to not wait another 30 years, I'll be back very soon! read more

Been to this place 5-7 times over the years. I think the food is decent but it's not my favorite Japanese restaurant for its lack of cooked fish on its menu as I'm sadly cutting down on my fresh fish intake. You may need to wait a bit on weekends because the place is not big, with limited tables and they don't take reservations. Weeknight is slower and we didn't need to wait for our table of four this past Thursday at around 7pm. Ordered the wild salmon teriyaki and I find their teriyaki sauce way too salty. Also ordered two pieces of red snapper and yellowtail sushi and they truly have fresh sashimi and good wasabi. I learned from the Japanese to eat my sashimi by first putting wasabi right on the fish than dipping the fish lightly in the soy sauce with a bit of radish. So I don't mix my wasabi in the soy sauce and have my wasabi as it :-) Over the years of Japanese food dining, I am able to smear more and more wasabi and my friends joke that I can eat wasabi like green tea ice cream. All in all, I know my wasabi and I appreciate it when it's fresh wasabi. The spicy scallop hand roll is just OK though as I find their mayo sauce overpowers the ingredients. I like how the chef's choice of ingredients like using wild salmon, real crab, etc. and I would recommend this place if you are a big fan of fresh sashimi. They also have couple sake choices on the menu so it's a nice little Japanese restaurant for sushi and sake in the Cambie area. read more

Colene and I trekked to Shiro for a post-Christmas dinner before I starting work in the new year. It is a small place, but was packed with hungry customers. There was already a healthy line when I arrived. Fortunately, the wait was fairly short. I felt the pressure as I could tell the waitress wanted us to order quickly and provide a fast customer turnover. She asked us three times if we were ready to order before we finally were and the first time she asked was only a few minutes after being seated. It was a little annoyed that we had to ask for tea. I do, however, understand they were quite busy. And now onto the food. The spicy chicken karaage wings were quite delicious. I really enjoyed the spicy, tangy sauce. I would have preferred the boneless style karaage some restaurants have but that's just me. All the sushi dishes were good including the chopped scallop and spicy salmon temaki. The fish tasted fresh and was well cut and arranged. Everything was clean and pleasingly served. The sweet potato tempura special was fine, not sure what I was expecting. I do like the simple, basic portions and style of Shiro. Everything was good and it ended up being a satisfying dining experience. The sushi and cooked dishes were pretty solid and I left with little to complain about. read more

Isn't it incredible (it should actually be unacceptable) that of the slew of casual sushi spots in Vancouver, there are so few run by Japanese and that are actually good. Maybe it's because they either run the Tojo-style high-rollers or the Guu-style izakayas. Which explains the Bieber-like fanaticism over spots like Toshi. And so, when I don't feel like getting trampled by the queues of committed Toshiphiles, I sometimes recall the existence of a backup maki supplier: Shiro. Stick with the lunch boxes and rolls and you'll be okay. Friendly service and nods from the Japanese chefs; usually not too crowded. read more

Yesterday I was here for lunch and it clear from the staff changes and the walls void Mr. Shiro Awards and trinkets the new owner has taken charge. I ordered a lunch box the sushi fish was very fresh of good quality and flavor. The Tempura was Outstanding but the noddles and spring roll that round out the box were cold. Service was good but not really warm and friendly. Price to quality ratio for the sushi was still very good and restaurant has had a through cleaning which it needed. Really 3.5 stars but not a fan just yet. read more

As usual, we come by here on every visit to Vancouver. I think it makes a difference whether the chef is in or not. I didn't love the rice this time. The fish was still amazing though. Quality and freshness. I'm giving Shiro 4 stars (I would actually give 3 stars but I'm averaging with my previous 5 stars). I know there are tons of sushi places to keep trying but there's a bit of nostalgia associated with this particular restaurant. We're keeping the tradition! read more

Came here for the first time on a Saturday night, table for 4. Knowing how busy the restaurant gets (they don't take reservations) we got there at 5:30. Restaurant was already full, had to wait for 30mins for a table. The menu isn't overwhelming and is easy to order from. Shiro is a Japanese restaurant run by Japanese. They have a nice selection of sake and some wine and beers. Started off with prawn and Yam tempura, batter was light and fried through, probably some of the better tempuras I've had. Fresh sashimi and delicate nigiri and rolls, highly recommend. Sweet prawn nigiri was by favourite, super fresh and sweet indeed. I hate waiting in a restaurant, but if the food is amazing , I may make an exception. In this case, Shiro is definitely a restaurant worth waiting for. read more

The first time I came here I thought this was one of the best sushi places in Vancouver. After this time I think it's just good. The roll quality during peak dinner rush is not as good. We got there early for dinner knowing that there is usually a long wait if you get there around 7. They had seats available for us right away. The moment we sat down it smelt quite fishy and the seats we had were in front of the door so we got a nasty chill whenever someone came in. Not a great start to the meal. We ordered the Spicy Agedashi Tofu which I would give 5 stars to on it's own. For rolls we each got a tempura roll and then a tuna roll, salmon roll, scallop roll and a real crab california roll. The rolls were perfect looking and the first bites of our tempura rolls were really good but, as we kept eating all of our rolls lacked freshness and flavor. My Scallop roll in particular was dripping with mayo (watery mayo) and was very fishy. I was quite disappointed considering all the great reviews but I have to say, I don't think i'll be coming back here for a second shot. read more

The sashimi was fresh but they should pay more attention and care 'cause we got a bone in our mackerel and a scale on the hamachi. It wasn't anything major so we didn't report or complain about it. The shiro special roll was indeed special. It has 6 kinds of fish rolled inside with rice and seaweed on the outside. I've never had this anywhere else. I'd recommend getting this. It's also quite filling. Aburi Battera Saba was such a hard dish to get. There must be some language barrier between the waiter and us 'cause she didn't get what we wanted to order and kept on telling us there's no more bluefin sushi box. After several attempts we got what we wanted and it was good. I'd say 4/5 for a very reasonable $9.99 price tag. This place is rather small and it gets busy. I don't recall our wait time but there was a constant line since we got there. Too bad they don't take reservations. I also noticed their nigiri's are a bit higher in price compared to the usual sushi joints so we didn't order. read more

My family and I came here a couple of weeks ago after seeing the reviews on Yelp; Shiro's quality of food did not disappoint. Their sashimi was fresh, and you can taste the different components in their rolls (the sauces were not overpowering nor was there an excessive amount added). Their dishes were so flavorful, and their butter fish sashimi was melt-in-your mouth, to die for!! I would definitely recommend: - Eggplant nibitashi - Salmon sashimi - Butter fish sashimi (This was a "Today's Special") - Special scallop roll A bonus: the Pocky packages given at the end was unique - giving a cute ending and sweetness to the end of your meal! =) Will definitely be back to try out other things on their menu! A tip: This restaurant is better for small groups as the restaurant is fairly small! Highly recommend coming here! read more

Apparently I've been missing out on the parking lot sushi in Vancouver. Apparently, this little gem has been hiding on Cambie all of these years, just waiting for me to pop in. Apparently, Shiro don't work here no mo'. BUT, regardless of that fact, this is good damn sushi, y'all. Yes, there is a minor queue to get in, but the 'write your name and number of people in your party on the list' thing they've got going on is not only efficient, but lets me know where I stand in the grand scheme of things. Also, here's a tip: why would your party of two want to sit anywhere but at the bar? That's where the action is, people. Admittedly, the prices are a bit high, but considering Shiro offers such fresh, quality sushi in a sit-down setting, I find them to be fair. The sashimi is skillfully handled and of high quality (minus, surprisingly, the salmon. I'd skip that one next time), especially the amaebi, which is buttery-sweet, and served with Shiro's fresh wasabi and the shrimp's head, deep-fried, on the side. Delicious. The BBQ salmon is perfect and greasy and some kind of sin, I'm sure; and the tuna tataki has just the right sear to allow the flavours to filter into the raw centre. And the rice, such a silly, simple thing (seemingly), the rice is perfect. Not too sweet, not too sticky, not too much vinegar. Perfect. Also, bonus: the wine, filled to the brim, is cheap. Like five bucks for a full glass, kind of cheap. You are so very welcome. So for that, the super insanely friendly service, the clean bathrooms, and the pretty underwhelming interior, I'd absolutely go back. This will undoubtedly become a backup in the wild sushi west that is Vancouver. read more

* Good neighbourhood Japanese restaurant * I finally made it over to the Cambie Village to try out Shiro, which came highly recommended from several people. I got the lunch box G, as recommended. It includes a LOT of food: Overall the sushi and sashimi was very good (4 stars): - The tekka maki was made with bincho, as is common in many places in Vancouver. The bincho was fresh and there was a generous amount. - The BC Roll had a generous amount of salmon skin, which was nicely crisped. - Minus 1 star on both rolls as they were slightly sloppy in their rolling/presentation. - The salmon sashimi was wild salmon, and very fresh. - The bincho sashimi was the best of the fish and had a nice buttery texture, while also being very fresh. The sushi and sashimi were the highlight of the meal. Here is what else came with it: - Tempura was nicely battered. But the shrimp (2 stars) had a slightly mealy consistency (as if there had been a defrosting issue). I also noticed that the shrimp had not been properly deveined (a pet peeve of mine - I'm not a big fan of shrimp poo). The veggies (carrot, eggplant, and zucchini) were fine (3 stars). - Katsu-don was my least favourite dish of the set (1 star). The meat was extremely tough, as if it had been over fried for WAY too long. There was also a lot more salt in the sauce than I normally would want. Overall I wouldn't get this dish again. - The broccoli gommae could have used a bit more sesame, but was ok overall (3 stars). So overall I think that all averages out to around 3 stars. I would certainly visit again if in the area - but I likely would focus on the sushi and sashimi only. read more

After numerous noshes here, I think I can safely say that I'm a fan of the freshness, the sweetness in the service and, wow, the unagi! Well priced sushi and sashimi and a small assortment of gyozas and such, this is the place for your basic fare. Don't come expecting AYCE, or even those large specialty rolls that take up pages on other menus. This is as simple and fresh as it gets. Orders that woo me on the regular? Negitoro, BC, and Tempura Rolls, salmon and tuna sashimi, unagi. Done, and full! Other perks? Free parking, and while it's a titch tight, I'll take it over meter parking any day. Pocky, served as dessert. And they only have one choice: Wild Salmon. Awesome! My one pet peeve: Why do some Japanese restaurants feel the need to leave the faucet running? Like constantly? The wastage of water makes me feel eel, I mean ill. read more

Best sushi I've had in a long time. Shiro makes other restaurants' sushi look like it came from a can. Everything had the feel of handmade freshness, from the rolls to the appetizers to the wasabi. They also use real chopsticks. There is a house special roll and a couple of fancy rolls, but no menu of gigantic carnival-style specialty rolls that you see in other sushi places. This menu is simple and authentic. We had: agedashi eggplant - fried eggplant and sauce, delicious special tuna sashimi - marinaded sashimi kazu roll - stuffed with fish and seafood spicy scallop roll - huge portion of scallops negihama roll - way tastier than negitoro This was enough for two people to be full but not stuffed. The total bill came to about $35 incl tax and tip for the two of us. read more

I'm so lucky that this is the closest sushi place to my apartment, right across the street from what will some day be Vij's. In an unassuming location that's usually full they serve up the freshest tasting sushi in town. The wasabi is real, the crab is real. The prices for lunch are super reasonable (my favourite is lunch box g). Dinner is a lot busier and more expensive, but still a fraction of the price of Tojo's. If you're looking to take an out of towner to a place to show them what Vancouver sushi is all about, take them to Shiro! read more

Wow. BEST KATSUDON EVER! It's been a few years since I've been to Shiro, and after today's spectacular lunch I don't know why I haven't been back more. I ordered the Lunch Box G (see Erin I's photo), an enormous tray consisting of tuna and salmon sashimi, tuna roll, salmon skin roll, shrimp and veggie tempura, and a mini katsudon that had the fluffiest, most perfectly made rice I have ever had in a katsudon dish. It was so good I felt obligated to eat every single grain in the bowl even though I was pretty much stuffed from the rest of the box and the other dishes we ordered. The pork chop was also excellent, lightly battered, crunchy and juicy. The sashimi was just the right cut and temperature, fresh and cool, and the freshly made wasabi went perfectly with it. Tempura was done well, light and crispy, and not too heavy or greasy at all. This box is an exceptional value at $11.50! We also had the BBQ Oyster that came with an addictive garlicky dipping sauce, which I ended up pouring on my rice after finishing the oyster. Other dishes of note: The Spider Roll, loaded with crunchy soft shell crab and a nice sauce. The Zaru Soba noodles were well presented, simple, fresh, and springy. The Cheese Isobe Age was a nice little sharing plate with cheese wrapped in seaweed and fried in tempura batter. Sorry I've been away for so long Shiro, I promise I'll be back more often, and soon! read more
