We were overly impressed with this little sandwich shop. It's tiny but still a decent amount of both outdoor picnic tables and indoor counter seating. We were there at 12:30p on a summer weekday and there was plenty of seating available with only a short line. Drinks available in the fridge - sodas and iced teas. I was happy they had an unsweetened iced tea. We ordered the Fitzgerald and the staff were accommodating to leave off the bacon. The pretzel rolls are light in color and extremely soft in texture. Unlike most pretzel rolls, these felt much less heavy in our bellies and we were surprised to not feel stuffed afterward, although we wish we'd thought to split one. But all ingredients were high quality so it was worth the splurge since it tasted delicious and seemed very fresh. Bathroom is unisex. Even though there's only one, it was clean, with attractive detailing in the sink.

We loved this small town find before going to the dunes! We brought our pup with us and she enjoyed the sunshine at the picnic tables. The food was very good and quick!

Wow, this place is such an amazing find in a small town that doesn't have tons of options. We were there the week of the 4th of July at 11am. There was no line at the time and it was pretty quiet. We ordered and got our sandwiches shortly after. They were huge & the ingredients were of great quality. You could tell the bread was homemade, the vegetables were fresh and no shredded iceberg lettuce in sight. The artisan lettuce was a great touch! We also got a cherry chocolate chip cookie. It was crunchy on the outside and gooey in the middle. Perfection. The building itself is small and so was the parking lot. I'm sure during peak hours that would've been frustrating. We got the Fitzgerald & rouse Simmons. Only thing we wished we would've done differently was asking for extra Mayo/ horseradish. Highly recommend this place!

DELICIOUS!!! Packed with flavor, excellent amount of meat and fixings and the baguette is amazing. Definitely a stop we will make again heading north for the fall colors.

Don't miss this easy-to-miss spot if you're anywhere near Empire. This is my favorite sandwich spot - I go out of my way to get here when I'm up north but happened to be running the Sleeping Bear 5K yesterday. (The marathon makes for a Busy weekend so be patient if there's a local event- they're taking care with your food) The BLT sandwich is my family's fave- if you're a bacon fan, this is a star- I'm a veg so Griffon is my go-to- sandwiches are full full full of whatever you order and wonderful wonderful bread And the two girls currently working here are super sweet- had to make a new container of coffee for my one cup purchase with no bother- and also pros at making the sandwiches- tip well because they're worth it!

Got a roast beef sandwich in a pretzel roll, good flavor with a nice touch of pickled onion, bit too salty however. Pasta salad is too bland on the other hand. Would recommend overall! read more

The shop was very cool as an all and all. The counter that they had to eat at indoors had pictures and a news-article like description of an old ship to fit the name of the shop itself. The counter attendant was nothing but nice, but their food wasn't the greatest I've had. They can make a mean sandwich, but I wasn't a huge fan of their pizza. read more

Great soups and sandwiches but no masking or social distancing requirements. No signs. Owner and some patrons without masks in this small space today. When I asked owner why his business doesn't require masks he shrugged and said "some people have medical conditions" and he "can't enforce it." Whatever--typical anti-masker attitude. Almost every business in northern Michigan requires masks especially with Covid raging again. read more

Love this cafe! Great sandwiches, pleasant young staff that is friendly and (I assume with Covid mask on) smiling. The menu has a great variety of sandwiches to choose from. I ordered a wrap and was delicious and fresh. Others in our group ordered a panini, loved it and another always orders a pretzel roll sandwich. She absolutely loves these rolls! There is a great selection of chips and the homemade chocolate chip cookies are yummy. I would definitely recommend Shipwreck Cafe! read more

Small shop but works well for our take out. We had the 3 Brothers, Fitzgerald, and Tugboat (ham) sandwiches. All were very good and filling. We also had the soup of the day (Creamy Broccoli) which was ok but could have been a little more creamy. Overall a good experience and we would come back again. read more

The family was headed to the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and we wanted to grab a bite to eat after hitting up the visitor's center. We were able to walk here easily from the visitor's center. I had the Fitzgerald, and it was a really great sandwich. It is turkey, bacon, and some other toppings on an amazing pretzel bun they make in house. All of the sandwiches looked great. A lot of unique options and they had a pretty big drink selection as well. Definitely surprising to find such a great sandwich shop in a small town, but well worth a stop if you are in the area. read more

Phenomenal sandwiches and delicious frozen custard. We got the Fitzgerald, Italian, and kids grilled cheese. The breads they use are unique and fresh. The veggies in the sandwiches are very in season and flavorful. Clean, outdoor picnic tables to sit and eat at. Perfect lunch experience close to Sleeping Bear Dunes. read more

This place exceeded our expectations. We stopped on our way back from the Dunes and left very satisfied. First of all the bread is some of the best I have ever had. It's not your typical pretzel roll. It's lighter with a little salt on top. We tried the BLT/avocado and chicken salad and both were delicious. The chips were tasty too! (I don't recommend the cherry bbq that wasn't so good, everything else ) read more

OMG why haven't I gone here sooner??? I've been going to northern MI for 13 years and this was my first time stopping in this cafe. The BLT with avocado was to die for!! After visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes, we were starving and didn't want to waste anytime getting to the Platte Bay for a swim. Shipwreck Cafe was the perfect local gem. Their sandwiches were amazing! The Fitzgerald was fantastically crafted. It was so good everyone wanted a bite. The other mouth watering sandwich was a BLT with a twist, it had slices of avocados in the sandwich. I'll never be the same again! Did I mention, the sandwiches are huge. The kids had an amazing grilled cheese panini. Each sandwich (brown bag) comes with a bag of local Michigan Potato Chips. I cant rave enough about this tiny sandwich shop! We had just finished hiking the Sleeping Bear Dunes (6 miles!) and were starving. After reading the reviews, we determined we had to stop before driving home. The sandwiches dont disappoint! The bread was made just that morning. The veggies were fresh. The sauce was amazing. Hidden gem is an understatement. This roadside cafe is an unassuming, humble, genuine diamond in the rough. Don't let the adolescent workers fool you, this place serves a d*mn good sandwich. The Fitzgerald may very well have been the best panini I've ever had the pleasure of eating. Homemade pretzel roll, quality meats, proper cheese, and a delectable sauce will always and forever equal an amazing sandwich... these people know what's up. Came to the area to visit friends and they took us here immediately. I got the chicken panini sandwich and it was really good and the bread tasted very fresh. It was a nice touch to get a "sack lunch" combo and get some of the local Great Lakes Co. potato chips. Seating inside and outside. read more

Phenomenal family-run sandwich shop. Randomly found this place as we are visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes. Great place for lunch really small but the sandwiches were phenomenal. I look forward to one day going back and trying their paninis. They also had local made potato chips that were really good. I just don't recommend the Cherry barbecue flavor ones . My personal preference did not like them. They also had a seafood chowder that was off the hook. read more

We stopped here after hiking Empire Bluffs in the national lakeshore. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sandwiches. They were delicious! The bread was salty (in a good way) and the ingredients were fresh and interesting. There is limited seating inside, but eating outside on the picnic tables was the perfect location for our lunch on vacation. You could also tell the locals stop in too, which I think is always a good sign. read more

Save yourself time, money, and an upset stomach by going to literally ANY other lunch spot in Frankfort, Elberta, Beulah, Benzonia, or the surrounding areas. Even the McDonald's on 31 serves better. The owners should be ashamed of themselves for serving such crap in an area that has so many top notch restaurants.

Both times I went they had quite a line but got through quickly. The place itself has a nice vibe with plenty of seating inside or outside in a covered section that's well decorated. Wow! Stopped here today for the first time after a visit to the family clinic. I purchased the smoked brisket sandwich and the seafood chowder. It was too much food for one person, but both items were just so excellent I am sad that it's taken me this long to discover it. The flavors were interesting and so complimentary. The sandwich bun would have been a treat all by itself. I am looking forward to working my way down the menu! read more

We are from out of town and were looking for a good, inexpensive place to eat dinner. This place had amazing sandwiches. I had the Fitzgerald and my boyfriend had the three brothers. Both were great and worth the price. The $10 per meal was well worth it for a big sandwich, chips, and a drink. I will be going there again if we go back to the area and will recommend to others. read more

Modest from the outside but delicious homemade sandwiches inside! We thought the menu had a good selection for our tastes. Don't pass this place by on your way to Sleeping Bear Dune Climb!
