As a local, it's so refreshing to get innovative, fresh, ethically sourced food that is absolutely delectable. One of the best restaurants in the region hands down. We come here anytime we are visiting Traverse City. It is about a 45-55 min drive away though. But, you can make a whole day in Glen Arbor after. This place has gotten very busy over the years. So plan to stand in line for a bit. Once you place your order the drinks and food comes out pretty quick! I like the style of this shop. It's very bright, clean, and rustic. You can even stay here! We only have come for breakfast and then later morning for sandwiches for the lake. The breakfast and sandwiches are always good. The show stopper are their pastries. They are all soo fresh and flaky croissant. Today I tried to Quiche. You can choose from gravy, bacon and jam, or veggie for the toppings. I went with veggies. Very good. During a heat wave: Hands down best ajo blanco soup and matcha lemonade of my life. FLAVORFUL! Got the (new to the menu) $14 cherry tomato salad.... amazing! Would get again and again. Easily one of the prettiest and most historic coffee shops I've been to! I opted for their vanilla bean oat milk latte, which was absolutely wonderful. I went shortly after open, so selection of pastries was abundant as well as wait time being short and quick. The service was great, but the deck and dock as the sun rose over Crystal River, which the Mill sits on, was just a perfect peaceful pairing for my morning sip. Bread was good, everything else is so-so. Really wanted to love this place but left disappointed. Outside of the building is lovely and the Website prepares you for a relaxed, good-food experience. Walking through the front door is a bit of a shock after that build-up of expectations. The main dining room is very dark, not nicely furnished, and not inviting (reminded me of a beatnik coffee shop). The ordering area is much nicer, light-filled and airy. Staff was helpful. I had high hopes for the food but alas, it was not to be: spiced pumpkin soup was barely warm oily, and filled with big pieces of nuts (disconcerting since I thought they would be blended into the soup) while the grilled cheese ($14) was not grilled (just dried out a bit) bread with cheese and jam. I think it was close to $28 for those two small items, without the tip. The loaves of bread were good, $10 for the batard and $7 for a half baguette. Batards are the best deal in the place. We did not try the pastries, way too expensive and many of them looked pale and undercooked. E.g. a 3" diameter cinnamon roll was $7 (we go to patisseries regularly and pay about 60% that price for excellent quality). Overall: Glen Arbor prices but the food is not worth the calories or cost. Absolutely best dinner experience! From the service to the incredible food and ambiance. Our table of 7 had the asparagus salad, cucumbers, scallops, duck meat balls, hash browns, sweet potato, a burger and a few orders of the teres major. For dessert we finished with the cheesecake, dark chocolate and the sourdough ice cream. Everything was nice and light with fresh ingredients. Each dish was made with thoughtful and cohesive flavors. We loved the setting. The crystal river is beautiful and the historic building has been restored perfectly! I am so thrilled this old building has been saved! Now the food... it was delicious but it was super expensive. We ordered two sandwiches for a whooping $41.00. The sandwiches were delicious but a bit over our lunch budget. I would have loved a flavored iced tea or a soda of some type but the options were limited to coffee, wine, or a couple of juices. We opted for water. The sandwiches were premade meaning we could not remove any items. The bread was fresh baked and delicious. Overall it was a good stop but expensive. read more

We stopped for lunch on a snowy Tuesday, and were greeted warmly in the cafe. The owners have preserved much of the old mill, including original beams, walls, and flooring. The person behind the counter explained the lunch setup, and answered all our newby questions patiently. The lunch menu offers some old favorites as well as novel selections. I had the Gruyère, collards, and mushroom sandwich, served hot. There is wine by the glass on offer, as well as beer. I had a rioja which was a good pairing for the sandwich. Speaking of which, the sandwich was super yummy and enormous. I'm a big eater and I couldn't finish it. When we come back in the summer we'll be back to The Mill for dinner. read more

We had a wonderful lunch here. I had the apple and celery salad. It was delicious just not enough dressing so make sure to ask for some more if it seems too light. And I had a Matcha latte and I had the carrots. And two of the pastries, the pine nut cookie and the cannelle pastry everything was fabulous. Our party of four were very excited to eat at the Mill in Glen Arbor, having heard good reviews of its Cafe and its dinner menu. However, on the evening of July 28th, we were in for a rude surprise. Our server was very nice but service was slow even though our reservation had to be one of the later if not last ones of the evening. The starters and "in betweens" that we ordered were interesting-sounding but came out uneven in execution. The starter of strawberry salad enticed us with spicy greens, a preserved corn vinaigrette and radish. Sad to say it was not a promising beginning: the strawberry pieces and radish slices were few and far in between, the spicy greens were anything but, and the vinaigrette added nothing to make the dish "sing". The charred beans were both undercooked (tough) and scorched, and although the crispy lardons might have saved the day, they too were rather burnt. The hakurei turnips (which I love) were offered with a wild ramp sauce and spruce tip honey, which would have been great if the turnips had (like the beans) been cooked enough to be able to absorb some of the flavor from the sauce. The mains were likewise uneven and that is putting it kindly. The golden tilefish - in half a century of eating out all over the world I have seldom seen this item on restaurant menus - came out dry. Actually, the piece on my plate felt barely warm to the touch, which suggested to me that the dish had been sitting around (and continuing to cook) long before it actually got delivered to our table. When I pointed this out to our server he seemed to understand and whisked it away immediately. Silly me, I thought I would get a fresh piece cooked up pronto - it doesn't take long to cook a small filet of fish (barely four ounces in weight) that is not thick, or dense in texture like swordfish. But no, I suspect the whole plate had simply been put in a warming tray or the microwave! For me, and one other person in our party who had also chosen the tilefish, our main was a really disappointing experience. Another diner ordered the pan roasted half chicken with sauce piperade. This beloved sauce was unremarkable, the skin of the chicken was barely crisp from roasting, yet the meat under it was dry, overly cooked. And, as if the chef's imagination had run dry, why were cherry tomatoes served as the vegetable when the sauce itself is tomato-based? The fourth diner ordered the Mill Cheesburger. Listed in a class by itself on the menu, this burger was fine, but what did stand out were the accompanying "tots" - nicely crisped tots that had deeply satisfying creamy insides served in separate dish. Now THIS would be something worth ordering by itself! Despite the above experiences, we were unwilling to give up when a wait person came to inquire if we would like dessert. We decided to share one sourdough ice cream with miso caramel. We inquired as to how such a flavor of ice cream was achieved and were obliged with an intriguing description of the lengthy and rather convoluted process it entails. Suffice it to say that the ice cream we tasted had no hint of tanginess - and no, no pieces of sourdough in it. It was, however, good vanilla-flavored ice cream. Mercifully we had the forethought to order the miso caramel sauce on the side. Everyone made a face when he/she sampled a small spoonful of it. I will end by saying that while creativity in cooking, as in most everything else in life, is to be encouraged, I wonder if there are some reasonably seasoned tasters to rein in the chef at the Mill when needed? And, equally important, some people in the kitchen who can be relied upon to produce a perfectly cooked piece of protein, be it fish or fowl, time after time? This is an establishment whose arrival on the food scene in Northern Michigan should be greeted with fanfare and fans. Not with reviews like mine. I wish the Mill and its personnel all the best and hope they can right the ship - soon. read more

This place has a great aesthetic and location and the food is good if not great. Our soup was lukewarm and the global offerings lacked the expected seasoning. For the price, I hoped for better. What should have been a 5-star review was marred by an inexcusable error in serving gristle for the beef course. For a $140 plus $50 wine paring tasting menu, a full 20% was inedible. This was not an instance of a bit of fat, rather it was hard, un-cuttable indigestible gristle that should have been trimmed in the kitchen by even an amateur chef. What were they thinking? It was both surprising and disappointing as every other serving presented was excellent, visually appealing and a lovely experience. I don't know if it was inattention or arrogance, but a tenderloin from Kroger would have been a better choice of meat than the hoof and tendon we were served. Supper at The Mill is a cool place, although many elements picked up from other places definitely made me ponder. Three things off the bat; the name 'Supper' and the 'smallish plates' are riffs on what modernbird has been doing extremely well since their opening nearly 2 years ago. Supper has a milk bread that is delicious, with a side of herby butter just like modernbird. We absolutely love modernbird, and this made us want to reserve there again. We tried multiple smallish plates at Supper, we liked the green asparagus, the cucumber dish was different, but tasty, our guests enjoyed the shima-aji and tartar, but didn't rave about either. We ordered the short rib and eagerly awaited this large dish with turnips. The presentation in the oven to table cassoulet dish was just what we had hoped- homey, yet upscale. We dug into this anticipated menu item, clocking in at $120, and the short rib was tough. Some of the turnips were undercooked, some were perfect. Both items left us disappointed. Short rib is a beast if you don't plan enough time. We wondered if the chef was out of their league. I'm sure he's great. But the simplest meals are often elusive. Growing up in a big family in Michigan, we ate short rib and many other cuts of meat regularly. They take time to cook to make them tender. That's why they are served as Sunday supper: time. They don't need fancy seasoning, properly salted and peppered goes a long way. Short rib is really all about the slow cooking for hours. And it should be fork tender. Supper is in the bottom level of the newly renovated Mill in Glen Arbor. The building is stunning overall, the renovation is spectacular. Any of us familiar with Glen Arbor for decades have watched this building sit idle, hoping for someone to rescue it. Turner Booth did just that. A restaurant and cafe make this place amazing. How lucky are we to be able to enjoy the beauty and the ambience; part Hudson River Valley, part Simon Pearce on the Brandywine(now closed). It's worth a visit just to take in the restoration and renovation. We looked around when we dined at Supper, there were many tables of 2 people and they looked confused. They were watching to see what our table of 6 was ordering and how we were reacting. We talked about the large plates and the lack of options for a table of 2. We personally will only go back in a group; the menu is simply not serviceable for 2 people. The menu online doesn't reflect the menu in house, either. So be prepared. We had 3 large plate options when we went, yet the menu online indicated 5 large plate options. Supper will find its' own identity, I'm sure of it. Right now, it seems to be sampling from other restaurants that are doing things really, really well. We'll come back when they evolve a bit more, understand that not every diner has to fit their perceived and preferred demographic. read more

We had "Supper" at The Mill which is a fine dining experience. The location has other food service at different price points. It's pricey and everything we ordered was creative, in the best way, and delicious. Our cocktails were great - a simple tequila, Campari and lime and a perfectly smokey mezcal concoction; I want the recipe. Portions are on the small size - the apps are for one and a bite or two and exceptional. The thought, care and detail of each was on a par with many of the best restaurants I've experienced. Because it was just two of us we were limited in our exploration of the menu but with two or more you could have it covered. They offer a tasting menu with wine pairings; next time. Our server was friendly, knowledgable and thoroughly professional. The location is so unique and peaceful right on a small river/canal. Make sure to go earlier in the day to avoid the crowd and long waits for your food. read more

Wow! This spot in Glen Arbor is in a primo location, beautiful setting, serene view of the mill stream during our dinner. We had a range of food between the 4 of us; a vegan, vegetarian, and two omnivores. All of it was fantastic. I particularly liked the snapper, and the cucumber dish. We had a monkfish snack to start. We had the chocolate dessert with cherries which was also fabulous. The Zebra and the - were both fabulous drinks. Our server was Oakley, who did a great job of explaining the layered sauces and what would pair well together. We wanted to lick all the serving bowls and dishes to eat every bite of the sauces. "Supper" - first the good - the scallops and sourdough ice cream were tasty (and unique in the case of the ice cream). The not great - the "blistered" tomato with pepper cracker did not give any "blister" flavor and was just ok. The steak was ok but basically tasted like a flank steak and was not worth $67. The terrible - the mushroom "entree" was described as roasted along with telling us it was a vegan entree option and they were known for their preparations and sauces. It was inedible. It tasted like they had been boiled (not roasted) and were topped with a broth that was so salty (and I like salt) that they were inedible. Even if this was executed perfectly there is no way a few mushrooms in a little broth should be called an entree To be fair when we mentioned the quality they did take it off the bill. The chocolate dessert was described as a thick chocolate mousse. There was nothing mousse like about this dessert. Just a very heavy, thick chocolate. Overall way overpriced. read more

We were hyped to come check out a newer spot in Glen Arbor, and from the photos it looked awesome. However, the only thing this spot has going for it is the atmosphere. The menu is very limited, expensive, and odd. There are almost no breakfast options, unless you want the keifer and granola, which is like eating pie and whipped cream for breakfast, a cookie, or a lunch sandwich. We opted for the keifer (which is not the typical liquid keifer - I kid you not, whipped cream I swear), a hand pie - bacon and potato ... no eggs, no cheese :( - and a shortbread... breakfast of champions, eh? Also the whole operation is really not conducive to efficient service. The coffee (drip) was fantastic, but if you want more than a cup o' joe on the higher end, I'd recommend a different spot. read more

Love the ambiance and the service but we didn't like the food. The burger is extremely salty and the desserts just weren't good. The bread is so crusty you can't bite into the sandwiches. My friends and I enjoyed our leisurely lunch at The Mill. The vibe was sophisticated hipster. You can sit inside or outside-- outside has several tables next to the peaceful river. To drink, we ordered the milk punch, which was an incredibly delicious beverage of matcha with pistachio milk and rhubarb jam--HIGHLY recommend. The spring lettuce salad was flavorful and refreshing, although I didn't taste any mint and think they might've forgotten it. My friends said their heirloom tomato and sopresatta sandwiches were just alright. The bacon jam hand pie was decent and warm, but kind of steeply priced at $7. The baked goods like bread and cookies all looked delicious, although we didn't try them. We'd return for breakfast and coffee or wine/beer and sit by the water, but likely not for a meal. So glad to have this new addition to the Glen Arbor business community. The staff is friendly and helpful, even in the summer when swamped with visitors, and the food is top notch. The molasses cookies are to die for and the blueberry jam that comes with the Toast & Jam breakfast is literally spreading blueberries on your toast. We loved sitting on the porch watching the fish in the river during the summer and now are loving the warm and cozy great room during the winter. Somehow, the online system had lost our reservation. Not an auspicious start. But the staff swooped in to rescue, found us a table with a lovely view of the river, and proceeded to make the evening memorable in the best of ways. After a couple of amuse Bouche, we worked our way through the fish small plates and the white wine. Eventually settled on a Hungarian tokaji which delighted with layers of goodness. The service was attentive but not hovering. And the chef inventive in both flavor and presentation. Looking forward to our next visit. read more
