I had a wonderful first visit to Sugar to Salt and will definitely be back. I ordered the breakfast risotto with a side of the cast-iron cornbread. The risotto was outstanding--loaded with incredibly fresh vegetables, smoky tasso ham, creamy raclette cheese, and one of the best pestos I've ever tasted. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about risotto for breakfast, but it absolutely worked. The cast-iron cornbread was also excellent, especially the honey butter glaze and the whole kernels of corn throughout. The service was warm and friendly, even during a very busy brunch. This is definitely on the pricier side, but I felt the quality of the ingredients, the creativity of the menu, and the care that went into every dish made it worth it. My only food-related criticism was that my poached egg was just slightly overcooked, but it was a very minor issue in an otherwise exceptional meal. My biggest suggestion for improvement would be the acoustics inside the dining room. When the restaurant is busy, the noise level becomes overwhelming and takes away from what is otherwise a fantastic dining experience. I ended up sitting outside, and the patio was peaceful and relaxing. I hope the owners consider adding some acoustic treatment because the food deserves an atmosphere that matches its quality. I'm already looking forward to coming back and trying several other dishes on the menu. read more

They don't have an espresso machine but they brew a really good espresso blend. For breakfast, we ordered the carrot cake pancakes, the toast, and a side of turkey sausage. Everything is farm to table and made fresh. The food is incredible. I ordered the carrot cake pancakes. The attention to detail with the candied ginger and homemade rosemary simple syrup was noted. My belly was so happy. The side of Turkey sausage was so good. It's not your basic sausage. They are homemade with roasted onions, leeks, and herbs. This changes every season, which is so exciting. They look like the haystack onions but they're potato very good. Very good service. We had the best way to Claudia. Everybody was very nice. They were quite busy. And the coffee was wonderful. They serve higher grounds coffee definitely recommend. They also offer awesome desserts. They also sell some of the desserts upfront in the cases. Our visit to S2S was deeply disappointing, and it's important to speak honestly about what happened. From the moment we walked in, we experienced what felt like clear racial discrimination. While white customers were greeted kindly, escorted to their tables, and menus waited them on tables with care, the owner herself treated us very differently. She handed us menus while we were still standing and simply told us to "go sit over there," without guiding us to a table. It was incredibly disrespectful. Once seated and ordered, the waitress was nice but we waited nearly 50 minutes for our food, just two people with a simple order. Even for busy sunday , it was unlikely specially that a larger group who arrived around the same time were served much sooner. After the 50 minute, when we politely mentioned the delay and requested to leave and pay for drinks, we were spoken to in a disrespectful tone under what seemed like a fake smiles and we were told, "This is not a fast food place," as if we were unreasonable or lacking understanding, a response that felt insulting and belittling. We weren't demanding fast food service; we were simply asking for clear communication and fair treatment. We were not informed about the wait time would be this long, and nothing on the menu indicated it either. A small biscuit was brought to our table during the wait, but we still weren't told how much longer it would be. If the breakfast food typically takes this long, guests should be given a heads-up so they can decide if they have time to wait. Overall, the lack of proper hospitality, the tone used to speak to us, and the differential treatment we received make it hard not to believe this was racially motivated.Being treated this way by the owner herself made it even more horrible experience! We expected to be treated like valued customers, not like a trash in the corner. Discrimination has no place in the service industry. We hope S2S seriously reflects on how they treat all guests not just those who look a certain way. Also, they should consider mentioning the expected wait time for orders if they are likely to take a long time. read more

We were visiting from Los Angeles and decided to pop in here to have breakfast and what a pleasant hidden gem. It's a farm-to-table restaurant where all the ingredients are locally sourced and the menus change every so often to reflect seasonal offerings. We met the owner, Stephanie, who is a breath of fresh air -- so warm and welcoming, and very accommodating. We fell in love with the cinnamon rolls at first bite -- it just melted in our mouths. They use cream cheese frosting, so much better than the usual white sugar frosting! Stephanie said they do all their baking from scratch in-house. We enjoyed the risotto with beef dish, the beef & potato waffle, as well as the pancakes. Everything was delicious! Olivia, our server, was superb, attentive, and understanding. She came back for coffee refills without us even asking. Loved her professionalism! We came back the next day for more cinnamon rolls, 3 plates of risotto and then this this time a beef pasty, and corn bread in a cast iron skillet. Unfortunately, we found the risotto a little heavy handed on the salt this time (all 3 plates), and the beef pasty very bland. There were too many potatoes in it, which made it heartier than it needed to be, and the gravy that came with it had no flavor whatsoever. I think a a mushroom-based gravy could be good. Stopped in for breakfast before my hike. Pretty chill Friday inside which was nice so I was quickly seated at the bar. The waitress was a great help bc I'm indecisive and we went with the chicken sandwich. I didn't realize that it can feed a family of 4. That sandwich was massive but I was able to take it down. Chicken, bacon, eggs, ham and I know I'm forgetting more. Each bite kept getting better and better. The fries were nice and crispy and the pickled carrot was a nice cleanser. Great local breakfast/brunch/lunch spot in the Grand Traverse Commons complex. They make everything, from the baked goods to the ketchup, in house and focus on local ingredients. They do not have alcohol, but a good beverage menu from coffees, chai, apple cider. The chai is fantastic. The food menu has some the basic items, but they have so many more interesting plates that are worth trying. The presentation is lovely as well. We stayed in the Traverse City commons for a recent trip and Sugar 2 Sale was within walking distance from our air bnb. If you plan to go here for breakfast, I recommend getting there as soon as they open. We were just a few minutes after they opened and they already had no seating inside. It had rained in the morning but cleared up so they didn't have any outside tables ready however they did offer a table to us, which we accepted and they had set up for us in just a few minutes. Our waitress was phenomenal. Very busy but did a fantastic job. We ordered the quiche and porridge. The quiche was very good, the tuna on top was a nice touch and was not overly fishy. We visited Sugar 2 Salt with my cousins, and there were three of us. We called ahead that morning to secure a table since they don't take online reservations. From the moment we arrived, the experience was wonderful. We were warmly greeted by Vanessa and promptly seated. She was also our waitress and was very attentive. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. I had the bánh mì, and it was spectacular -- the bread is homemade, which truly makes a difference. One of my cousins ordered the steak and grits. We normally don't order grits when dining out, but Vanessa recommended them, and she was right. They were incredibly creamy, with Parmesan, and so flavorful. The dish also came with collard greens, which were amazing as well. My other cousin had the brisket toast and loved every bite. We also enjoyed fresh, great-tasting coffee. My cousins ordered orange juice, which was freshly squeezed -- real orange flavor, not the artificial taste you get from commercial juices. It was very sweet and refreshing. This was the last meal of my bachelorette trip this weekend - originally we wanted to go to a crepes place downtown, but with the cherry festival and parade going on, everything was slammed. We called Sugar 2 Salt and they said they had 5 barstools open for us, so we headed there. This place is a little hard to find - on Google Maps it makes it look like it's next to the Ales place next door, it's actually around the corner. Everything here was plated beautifully! I do wish service was a little faster - we waited maybe 30-45 minutes for our meals. I ordered a bunch of sides: multigrain bread, pork sausage, and a blueberry bread with lavender. The blueberry bread was out, and they didn't tell me until right before the other food was delivered; they asked if they could get me anything else, I decided on the French toast bread, but they were out of that too, so I asked for a side of potatoes. My sausage was really good; the multigrain bread was crunchy but needed butter, and they eventually brought me some, but it took a while. That being said - the meals my friends got looked and tasted amazing, per them, including the gluten-free pancakes, cornbread skillet, and risotto (although apparently the pancakes were served cold). I also got a GF brownie with peanut butter for the road and that looks really good too. My friend let me try her cornbread skillet - it was crunchy on the sides and delicious. I'd definitely come back here (and probably would get the cornbread and sausage!) but it WAS a little disappointing how long everything took to come to our bartop. read more

My experience here was disappointing. Walk in with such high hope because of reviews and recommendations. I was going to order duck and they ran out, risotto is the next best thing. Which is wrong. Risotto itself is done well, it is creamy and not soupy. The problem is chef use ham in the risotto. Ham cover all the taste of risotto and other ingredients, basically I was eating ham with plain risotto. They should sub it with something else more mild like mushroom, or white meat. The thing is pancake is bone dry. It is multigrade but come on. Can't you put more eggs or milk into the pancake mix. The food looks very aesthetic and appealing, but I never had pancake so dry before. Had to try something else on the menu next time, since everyone give it such high reviews. read more

My husband and I came here for brunch during a quick 24 hour trip to Traverse City. He had never checked out the Traverse City State Hospital complex so we bopped around here for most of the day, starting with a delicious meal here. The spot was a little tricky to find in that we kind of had to hoof it around the building since we thought it was on the the other side. The space itself isn't anything super fancy but it's comfortable and cozy and on a random November Sunday we had no trouble finding a table. For my meal I went with the breakfast risotto which was so incredibly good! The dish itself appears to be on the menu year round, though they do seem to tweak it seasonally, this time leaning into more fall flavors like golden beets alongside the risotto, pesto, goat cheese, and a poached egg. It was a beautiful presentation, as well. My husband went with the porridge which also changes seasonally. This variety featured a base of hearty grains with gooseberries and was topped with half a poached pear and bee pollen. He also said his was fantastic. The table next to us got the cornbread and it looked fantastic. I regretted not ordering some ourselves and the pastries in the case also looked delicious though we were too full to indulge. I had one of the most upsetting and disappointing restaurant experiences of my life at S2S Sugar to Salt. From the moment my wife and I walked in, we were treated with clear disrespect, and the way we were handled compared to other guests made me feel deeply uncomfortable--and yes, racially discriminated against. We arrived before a group of four people, yet the owner personally prepared and welcomed that group with care and attention--setting their table with menus, utensils, and walking them over with a warm tone. Meanwhile, when it came to us--just two people--we were handed menus coldly and told to go sit in the corner table. No effort, no courtesy. It felt humiliating and frankly racist. Things got worse from there. We waited almost an hour for food. An hour. This is a breakfast spot, not a fine dining restaurant. We were hungry and had other appointments to get to. When we finally decided to just pay for our drinks and leave, only one of the two dishes we ordered had shown up. The timing was unacceptable. And when we said we no longer wanted the food, they responded with the incredibly condescending and dismissive remark: "This isn't a fast food place." That was insulting, especially considering how we had already been sitting for nearly an hour. That kind of response only made the situation worse, as if our frustration wasn't valid--again, as if we didn't matter. This wasn't just bad service--it was blatant disrespect, and it felt clearly racially charged. It's 2025, and no one should walk into a restaurant and feel like a second-class citizen because of the color of their skin. I will never return to this place again. The experience was unprofessional, unwelcoming, and downright infuriating. If you care about basic decency, fairness, and respectful treatment--go somewhere else. When we finally were able to place our order, we waited over an hour for the food. When we asked to check in, the person who appeared to be the owner/manager came over and stated "Your order has been in for 37 minutes and that is how long it takes" without any consideration and as if into her version of reality was true. No apologies or statements based in fact. We had to wait for almost 70 minutes for our food, while tables Sat after us ate and left. If she had come over and said the truth (your server didn't actually put in your ticket until later which we found out later to be the case) I would not have cared in the least.
