We decided to go exploring today and ended up at Tonto national forest. We took the turn for Saguaro Lake on a whim and ended up by Shiprock for lunch. First, the lake is beautiful- just gorgeous view as others have stated. We knew what we were in for as far as view vs food, but we were really hungry. The tables on the patio are not quite socially distanced, but there was a nice breeze and so we didn't feel unsafe. As the lunch hour carried on, there were more and more people arriving without masks and walking pretty close to the tables. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with pepper jack cheese and a side of coleslaw and my husband ordered the fish tacos with a side of fries. The chicken sandwich was pretty bland, but that is because the cheese only covered half of the sandwich. The coleslaw was interesting, it has raisins in it, but it was pretty good. My husband ordered the fish tacos and felt they were almost inedible. And I quote 'worst fish tacos I've had in my life.' And that's saying something from the guy who is always telling me '5 stars!' The best part of the meal was the fries, they were crispy and yummy. Service was exceptionally slow. We had to get our waiters attention several times for simple asks, like a refill of a beer or our check. They do have quite a few food runners, so you did actually get your food when it was hot. There just isn't much hustle in the actual server team. The outdoor patio was overflowing with people by noon- so we hustled up and paid our $53 bill. By the way, appetizers are quite expensive (chips and salsa- $9.99), so no, you can't come here and hang out for just the view :). read more

This is a very nice place to eat, but you need to be aware of the timing of coming here with the cruise schedule. The restaurant & parking lot can get very crowded when the boat comes and goes. Dining outside is the best. The view is wonderful and the service is pretty quick. They have a nice menu selection, most of the time with standard pub type food, and recently we got a Reuben on St Patrick's day and it was delicious. Brad took care of us, flashy, upbeat, friendly, with genuine kindness and devotion to serving his costumers! The service of the customer seem to be his top pryorty, and we noticed his efforts. This spot is overlooking Saguaro Lake and it's the location that's the real draw. The good is good but pricey in my opinion. I took the family up this weekend and lunch for our party of 6 was $190 which included the gratuity which was added in by the restaurant per normal practice for groups. Service is good. I had the fried catfish po boy and clam chowder. The fish was not that good and soup could have been hotter. The others in my group all loved theirs so I am giving 4 stars. I brought a group of 12 seniors for lunch 1 hour before their boat cruise, forgot to make a reservation, and wow! The staff here at ShipRock MADE IT HAPPEN! They were short staffed and not ready for our large group to show up unannounced but they were so kind and accommodating and did everything to make sure all of my seniors had a great meal and a great experience. I'm being generous with 3 stars. The view was a 5 star but the food was just meh. We were there on a weekday and still waited 45 mins to be seated. My husband ordered the fish platter with cole slaw and fries. Fish was greasy and flavorless. I ordered the burger and fries. Food was hot but my burger had a strange flavor. I ate a third of it and gave up. It's a beautiful area but The Shiprock is not someplace I would ever eat again. We had 2 meals and 2 ice teas and our total was a whopping $65 including tip. We brought an out of town friend to venture about Saguro lake and look at the boat rentals. It was approx 9am and we decided to ascend the stairs to check out the restaurant for a coffee. We ended up sitting out on the beautiful patio overlooking the lake, had the Torpedo Burrito (chorizo and eggs) um YUM! And we had the best Bloody Mary's. Wow so unassuming, but so good! The food and the drinks were outstanding. The new waitress was darling. We had a good chat about the activities that the locals do around the lake (stand up paddle board etc.). What a pleasant surprise! We live off Shea so it is an easy 20 minute drive for a breakfast or meal with a view to wow your senses. read more

Okay so reviews on this place were so mixed I almost didn't go. We went anyway and I popped in the back to ask for a bowl of water for my dogs in the car. The man told me to bring them in to lunch with me on the patio and then they brought each of my German Sheperds a water bowl and a plate of chicken, bacon and beef without seasoning made especially for dogs!!! The waiter we had took great care of us and was an excellent waiter and the food we all ordered was good! The views were great and we had a lovely time. But the service for my dogs was over the top! I was going to take half of my sandwich and salad to go but when the gal finally brought me a box the box was placed halfway on the table and the food once I put it in there spilled on my lap she saw this right in front of her and had no concern so I left the food there so again it was a total waste. Just received a note from yelp needs pictures for this establishment, you don't need the gnats flying around the food , water and a stale soda . Shiprock restaurant advertises for the all you can eat fish fry but after 20 minutes of wait , food arrived and we haven't even touched the fries the bill came and the waitress was never seen again until a couple sat behind us and ask if I need a box for a fry , is she delusional !!!!! Ignore any bad reviews. Most of them say "too expensive". I don't know what kind of cheap people go here, or if they are used to McDonald's prices, but this place is priced just like any sit down restaurant in the area but with 10x better views. $15-$20 for a huge sandwich/burger and fries. We came a few days ago, sat outside on the deck by the misters, and enjoyed the peaceful view. The pulled pork was huge and delicious. The Reuben sandwich was huge and delicious. The BLT was exactly what you'd expect from a very tasty BLT. The fries were mouth watering. Even had a prickly pear margarita that was recommended and so tasty. Customer service was fantastic. We had a 4:00 pm. cruise on Desert Belle today and had planned to eat here prior to the cruise. Nowhere on your website, nor anywhere else, did it mention that you were closed for renovations. There really isn't anywhere else to go eat at yhe lake, so we had to hang out for almost 90 minutes until the cruise and even longer to eat. The notice on the door stated it was closed for renovations and under new management, which is fine, but your website should be updated to let people know. We weren't the only group who had planned to eat beforehand, then had to go to plan B, which was a restaurant 18 minutes away. It's totally unacceptable. Not a good start for new business. read more

We really enjoy having lunch outside with a view of the lake. Service was quite slow not very busy but hey we have beautiful scenery. Food was all right not great, but good. Call grossed out by the menus . The paper ones with food choices were all pretty well used and in this Covid time not overly excited with that, they had laminated drink ones on the table but felt like they had not been washed. Probably overly picky with that right now as I took my mom there that has stage four cancer and we're going through chemo, immune systems pretty shot so hyper sensitivity on that right now. If your looking for a good view of the lake you can't go wrong. I'd give the ambiance a 5 star, it ends there. I ordered a basic cheeseburger and it was probably the worst I've had this year. Just a basic frozen patty with zero flavor. The lettuce, tomato seemed fresh so that was a plus. The side of fries was ok but didn't stand out. Don't let my rating scare you away because there are other things that may be ok. If your going for the patio and view, you can't go wrong. Very casual atmosphere. Beautiful scenery looking over the lake. Every time we've eaten here, the food is excellent. My favorite is the reuben sandwich. Sweet potato fries are also great. Service is always attentive and quick. Best to get there by 11 am. on the weekends as the road gets backed up with vehicles going to the boat ramp. Kids joked that it was from the lake but it's actually just poor quality water with servers splashing rag water into the pitchers. No common sense in putting them next to each other. I ordered the fish and chips and received two very average sized pieces of fish and only a small amount of fries. Everyone else at my table received more fried than me. The fish seemed like it came from a package like something you could buy at a grocery store. Not fresh battered fish. My meal was either $18 or $19 which I think is way too high for the small amount of food I received. My FIL had a burger which was not a fresh handmade burger but rather a frozen premade patty. At these prices they really needs to do better and put more thought into their menu and preparation. Just because you have a great location is not enough reason to skimp on high quality food. Good service with a large, great patio overlooking Saguaro Lake. Really, the views are top notch and honestly makes at least one trip worth it... even if you simply order snacks and drinks after a day of boating, hiking, whatever. The inside seemed a little small but was very clean and full of quirky things to look at. Would definitely keep the little ones engaged, checking out the wall hangings and fish tank. We were quickly escorted through the interior to get to the patio, helped by a friendly face working the front. The food was just okay. We all ordered sandwiches- burgers, turkey sandwich, etc. They kids menu had good options and the prices were fair. But the hamburger was overcooked and the fries were cold. Server kept bringing fresh sodas, which was a plus. She also brought over some small binoculars for our 9 year old to look through, a major hit at the table. Place seemed busy, which was nice. The day we visited was rather windy and made the patio on the chilly side. No fault of the restaurant of course but a tip that, if you do go on a colder day, bring a jacket if you plan to sit on the patio and take in the views. read more

For a family that has 6 kids - who wants to pack/organize a meal at the lake? To save $ yes - but every time? No way! Yesterday we treated ourselves to a restaurant meal in the middle of our beach day. The Shiprock Restaurant is a wonderful and tasty oasis at saguaro lake. Yes, it is pricey. But worth it. The ladies working there kept our kids entertained with coloring contests while our food was cooking. The owner came out and the kids watch them feed the fish in the two large aquariums inside. The inside and outside seating have wonderful views. There's kids meals galore. All come with a drink and are served on an upside down frisbee! (See photo.) As of today - the menu is reduced due to the pandemic, but I'm told they normally have a much bigger/awesome menu. Adults their enjoyed chicken strips, a grilled chicken sandwich and a taco salad. All great! The kids had chicken strips, cheeseburgers, and grilled cheese! Call ahead for reservations. There seems to be a lot of regulars that eat there too. The staff knew many people by name. They have daily specials as well. What a great treat it was to enjoy such a yummy lunch and not have to worry about food during a lake day! read more

Shiprock was definitely more of a Shipwreck and Castaway experience. On the recommendation of our Desert Belle boat tour captain, we decided to try the Shiprock Restaurant. We had high hopes for a great experience but, they quickly sank. We were seated immediately on a beautiful Saturday evening at dinner time...(which should have been our first clue). We ordered a drink that we had to remind the waitress to bring. We then ordered chicken gizzards as an appetizer. Which were fantastic (I recommend asking for a side of horseradish sauce!)! It was pretty much a sinking ship from there. Some of the food was average. One person in our group ordered a side salad and twice baked potatoes. The potatoes were cold so she sent them back, and unlike Tom Hanks in Castaway...they never returned. I ordered medium rare prime rib, sautéed mushrooms, and asparagus. The mushrooms and asparagus were cooked perfectly. The prime rib definitely was not. It was cooked medium well to medium at best. (I'm pretty sure "Wilson" was more tender, flavorful, and had more pink on "him") Most appalling of all, I sent back the over cooked prime rib, only to have the same piece of meat abruptly brought back by the manager and plopped down in front of me, curtly telling me that it WAS cooked medium rare. Once our group picked our jaws up off the table, we asked to speak to the owner. She quickly came out and proceeded to reiterate what her manager had said that this indeed was medium rare prime rib (see uploaded picture) never apologizing or offering to make anything right. The only person who had sense enough to try to make things right was our sweet, untrained, "floundering" waitress (who actually paid for the prime rib herself!)
