I ordered an 8 oz. steak sandwich & sweet potato fries for $25.00. The fries were good but the steak had no taste except while chewing I sipped on the steak juice which made it better. The waiter was very pleasant and conversed with me about my meal. I would not return because the food is not comparable to the price they charge! read more

Awful. Booked a reservation for our anniversary dinner only to find out the menu that was advertised online (one we were familiar with) had changed. When we asked the waiter, host and manager about the menu, we were simply told "Oh thanks, that needs to be updated". Well GeeWiz I guess I'll take my business elsewhere permanently. If you're going to run a business do it right, update your info online if you want to hold on to your patrons. On a side note, the beer and wine were wonderful, thank you for the hospitality. Came in for an early dinner with my better half and our daughter who lives in California. 5 star it's all I can say. The missus & I had the Prime Rib. Our youngest (21) ordered the fish & chips. To top it off, we finished with the bread pudding. EVERYTHING was great, with plenty to take home. Frank ( Francisco) has a great sense of humor, aside from being a great waiter. We have eaten at Ship Tavern many times but something has gone wrong. I have a nostalgic reason for going there but last night will be the last time. Their signature item, prime rib, was tough and it felt like it had been sitting under a warming lamp for a long time. Drinks were ok but pricey, nothing special. Our guest, who had never been there, is very experienced with wines and their suggestions were essentially undrinkable. Our waitress (server, not pc to say waitress) was not a quality server at all - first time for that. She was scattered and disorganized and not up to the former standards of Ship Tavern. Went with friend for Thanksgiving dinner. It was terrible. Food was cold, turkey was fatty, leg of lamb was not leg of lamb but possibly yearling sheep. Asparagus was weedy and inedible. I expected more from the Brown Place. Will never go back. read more

Had a lovely dinner with family. Excellent server. Had a tour of the hotel, which Is beautiful, hopefully soon can spend a weekend there in the Beatles Room. Cool environment in the Brown Palace. Decent menu. Typical inflated hotel prices. I had the salmon salad, which was awesome!!

Prime rib was undercooked with no flavor- onion soup should be described as a bowl of salt. It was loud & staff was stretched. Overall it was worst meal we had in Denver. The only thing we could think of was is there another Ships Tavern in Denver & we missed it read more

Francisco made our 28th Anniversary dinner very special. We ordered the crab cakes appetizer and the Prime Rib for dinner. The potatoes were supposed to be Boursin mashed but I couldn't taste the Boursin at all (and I love this garlic herb flavor) but the succulent meat overrode any shortcomings. It was a tender, choice cut and was served with a hot horseradish. The chocolate gateaux Francisco brought was ample to split and we enjoyed it very much. Nice little bar in a historic hotel. The staff is well educated on the history of the hotel and happy to share. The hamburger was good. My husband ordered steak fries, they had some batter or something on them, not so great, not bad. My seafood chowder on the other hand was amazing! They brought out warm bread and whipped butter. This review is for Kristin Ercoli, bartender, and hostess. They completely treated us with respect like we were their guests. And turned my perception of the brown palace around. Let me tell you I've stayed in my fair share of 4 Star and 5 star hotels globally so I know the kind of service you pay for. The lobby was nothing like the "luxury" they advertise. We had a HORRIBLE experience at the lobby for 1 hour we waited for food and drinks and had to keep flagging down different servers to inquire about the status of our order and after that 1 hour we get a "oh we ran out the beer and oh the kitchen is backed up" mind you everyone around us seated AFTER us was given food and drinks promptly. And we were told Ship Tavern had no room for us. Well when we went over to Ship Tavern ourselves because we were starving, Kristen heard us out and placed us at the bar. She was so kind and quick. Took care of the first round of drinks for us when she didn't have to deal with the other side of the hotels poor service. She is amazing. I hope your upper management reads this review and promotes you. And the bartender and the host. read more

Onion soup and a glass of wine. Good soup nicely accompanied by brioche (a bit dry) and toasts. Wine improperly kept. A $16 glass of white wine served way too cold (47). Not the way to treat your expensive wines, plus of course, it masks any taste. read more

Delicious food and it's on the Denver Dining Passport! We came on the weekend for lunch and it was pretty empty but still took a little while to get service. I had the lobster roll which was really good! Overall a great experience and would be back. read more

We've always loved the Brown Palace! We stayed there on our wedding night and several subsequent anniversaries. It was elegant and beautiful. We returned today to eat at the Ship Tavern. Such a disappointment! We took my mom there for lunch so she could see the hotel. The service was terrible - slow and inattentive. Our drinks were never refilled. The chicken sandwich we ordered was so overcooked, we couldn't even cut it. We sent it back and the replacement was also overcooked and very spicy without being described as such on the menu. The Mac & cheese was OK, and the homemade chips were good but those were the only positives. Definitely NOT worth the cost or the trip. We won't be going back. read more

3-4 years ago we came here for the 5280 special. It was fantastic- so good that we made another reservation and returned in 4 days. The prime rib was perfect. Juicy, thick, tender, perfect temperature - all that you would hope for from the Brown Palace. Yesterday (March 12 2022) we returned for the 5280 special. The cut of the prime rib was as thin as they could carve it and maybe get away with it. It was maybe a hair under 1/2 an inch. It didn't look like the 10 oz as stated on the menu. It was cooked as ordered, med rare, but it was cold. Not even warm. We sent it back, which we have never done anywhere, and their 2nd attempt was just as cold. They did give us a new cut, and added maybe one sprig of thin broccoli to the plate but it was just as cold as the first serving. The dessert was great. Some sort of chocolate moose bar with raspberry sprinkles and mango sauce. The rolls were mediocre but there was a large paper thin piece of something w/ seeds on it that was good. We were pretty disappointed and won't return. Del Frisco's for the exact same price, never disappoints. We don't go out often but when we do we expect it to be a treat. read more

Just wanted to leave some feedback. I'm a guest at the Holiday Inn Express across the street from Ship Tavern. The Tavern does all of the in room dining for the Holiday Inn, as I am told they are linked somehow. Today was very cold and snowing, and after the work day, I really didn't want to get out in the elements. I turned to Yelp to help me make a selection for a delivery that was "near me". I first looked up the Tavern, as that would be the easiest, and was concerned with the plethora of bad reviews. I mean, the average reader walks away thinking...this place really sucks. In the end, I opted for convenience, held my breath, and ordered anyway. How bad can it be, right? I ordered the Prime Rib (Medium Rare) with extra au jus and horseradish. The order was taken promptly and delivered to my room in under 30 minutes. It was cooked to order, NOT fatty, and overall a delicious meal. The service and the food were outstanding! I don't ever post reviews, In fact this is my first, but felt they deserved better than what I had read. That said, I do deduct a star for the food being a bit over priced. While the building and the service of the Brown Palace are first rate Ship Tavern food disappoints. We started with the New England Clam Chowder which was a congealed mess lacking both flavor and any significant amount of clams. The Main Lobster Roll was questionable in freshness and again was not properly seasoned. I had the croque monsieur which came on good enough bread but the ham was a sliced deli disappointment. Denver has plenty of first rate establishments in every budget and this would not be a place I would recommend or return to. If they didn't have a constant supply of hotel guests Ship Tavern would have failed long ago! Time to step up your game Ship Tavern. SAD... read more

Once a great tavern, on par with New York's 21 Club, Bill's Gay Nineties, PJ Clarke's, and King Cole Bar, LA's Musso & Frank, Chicago's Drake and other classic saloons, the Ship Tavern has lost a lot of its unique style. The food is still excellent, classic Americana, but the ambiance has slid. It's too bright and feels more like a diner than an old world tavern. The staff, once a conglomeration of professional waiters and barmen in classical attire - ties, captain's jackets, etc., - are now indistinguishable from any of the generic chain restaurants and "craft beer" pubs that have infested downtown Denver. Ironically, on a recent visit there was an excellent jazz trio playing the hotel lobby during Friday's afternoon tea. At night the bar was quiet - a lonely un-played spinet piano sat at the end of the bar, and not even any recorded music. No wonder it was mostly empty. The Ship Tavern should be the last bastion for "adults" to hang out in downtown Denver. They seem to have conceded to the homeless shelter playground Denver calls "the 16th St Mall," and the very contrived "LoDo". read more

I've been coming here for years. It's one of my favorite places to go when I'm in Denver. Took a friend here two nights ago, was really looking forward to it. Service, via Ian, was outstanding and personable. Our salads were great. We ordered a filet and a buffalo rib eye. Can't speak for my friend's filet but my steak wasn't very good. I suggest the kitchen TRY the food they make frequently to avoid complacency. There was nothing special about it. It was slightly tough, not thick and expensive. A bit unusual for me, but I had a ribeye the night before in some random restaurant on the Western Slope and it was outstanding, and it was $12 cheaper. This is DENVER! There's supposed to be great meat. My benchmark for great steak is Peter Lugar (I'm a NY'er). They consistently nail it every time. I really suggest the kitchen look deeply into their repertoire and make sure they really believe things are up to snuff. Now, here's something else. What's with serving these entrees in bowls?? This isn't just some picky afterthought. The tables in ST have low slung seats, that means that you have to raise your elbows to eat. Putting steaks in those bowls means that in order to clear the rim of the bowl to cut your steak you have to raise your hands beyond what is comfortable. Steaks belong on plates, not those bowls. Oh, why didn't I return my steak?? I was enjoying a mini reunion with my buddy and was loathe to alter the vibe of the meal by sending it back. I hate to think that on my next visit I have to find another place. The Ship's Tavern is a classic spot and I'll return, but with considerable scrutiny. read more

So disappointed, I ordered what i thought was a ribeye and i got three little pieces of meat. I tried one and it was awful. The bartender said i can bring the Chef out and he came out and told me he was busy and would take the steak back. I will never eat here again. Great classic little pub/restaurant. Food was good. "Fish and Chips" I ordered was actually fish, shrimp, scallop and chips. Missed that on the menu if it was indicated - but I'm not picky. Not worth the time. We are staying at the Oxford Hotel (excellent hotel I must say!!) and wanted to check out the Brown Palace Hotel, so we walked a mile to grab some dessert at The Ship's Tavern. The hostest, once finding out that we were only there for dessert put us on a two seater table claiming that it was the only one available, when there were clearly many regular tables open. This was at 10pm and I'm thinking there aren't many guest rushing for dinner at 10pm.... well the waiter was just as marvelous. Almost snearing down on us for wasting his time with "just dessert". Then apparently they had to swim to Hawaii to go pick up the pineapple for my upsidedown cake because it took FOREVER for them to bring it out. This is the first and probably the last time we'll eat here. read more

My first visit was less than stellar so I decided to try again a week later. On my first visit (a Thursday) I was given a happy hour menu. $5 wells sounded really good for this locale. The bartender was less than attentive and not talkative or friendly at all. I ordered two well drinks before happy hour ended but was charged full price when I cashed out at 6:20pm. I asked about it and he claimed he must have rang them in after 6 but still only gave me happy hour price for only one drink. My second visit was on a Tuesday. This time I was told there is no happy hour menu. Not the same bartender but same indifferent attitude. Did his job but nothing more. I ordered food this time. Prime Rib was about average at best. I live nearby and really wanted to find a place with great food and service which I am willing to pay for. $10 for a well drink, no friendly interaction and mediocre food....needless to say I won't be back. Would give a 3 star review but the extraordinary prices drop it to a 2 star. read more

Ships Tavern apparently has some serious history. The place has managed to avoid being outdated though. While the service is pretty slow, the staff is friendly and everything I ate there was very good. I wasn't expecting haute cuisine and I didn't get that, but I was pleasantly surprised with the stuffed salmon, New York strip, and several of their salads. Avoid the fish and chips, as one of the waiters advised me that it wasn't very good. read more

Ship Tavern serves up a great lobster roll and french onion soup. Both are highly recommended. I'd give a better rating, but the grapes and oranges that come on the side with the lobster roll have arrived rotten and mushy. Kind of makes you wonder about the quality of the lobster, doesn't it? This place is very cool old school with a nautical theme. They have a good food selection...something for everyone. I recommend the baked Camembert cheese and the French onion soup. Friendly staff. The Brown Palace Hotel is a great old hotel in Denver...so it's worth there visit just to see this place. read more

SO disappointed! The Brown Palace, one of Denver's crown jewels historically, really needs to step it up. I hate when places use their history to overcharge & under-serve. On a recent trip, our party of 4 had to wait 30 minutes past our reservation time. When we finally were seated, it took a good 15 minutes before we were acknowledged by our server for a drink order. The service continued to be extremely slow through the remainder of dinner. On top of the slow service, was the extremely inflated prices. A bare-bones burger will cost you $15. If you want to add cheese or other toppings, that will cost you an additional upcharge for each item. The burgers came out over-cooked & underwhelming. I ordered the halibut ($31), which tasted more like a frozen fish filet- rubbery & dry. The side accompaniments were just as bad. This is the 3rd time I've been at the Tavern, and will not be back unless some radical changes are made. read more

The service is pretty good also, but the food is just not up to par with the price. It had a loud din which was to be expected but we were seated in a louder corner with an obnoxiously loud threesome next to us. The crab cakes were more like crab salad. The iceberg wedge was great, the lamb chops were just "aah" (should have known when my wife said "cooked to chefs preference" -presumably medium rare - waiter gave a blank stare) polenta was good, prime rib sandwich good. Waiter disappeared at end and we had to chase him down to pay - we should have just left but too honest for that - i bet we would have been miles away before they noticed. Made a reservation for 6 people - 2 weeks in advance. Showed up 5 minutes early and checked in. The 2 people in front of me walked up and told the hostess (Madison) that they did not have a reservation. So, she said let me see what I can do and sat them at the middle of 3 empty four-tops. Then, Madison came back to me and said she just had to make a table for our group of 6... I assumed she realized that she had effectively split up 3 available tables for our 2 week old reservation... Madison's next idea was to try and move some small tables in the entryway into a table big enough for our two week old reservation of 6. She would be glad to seat us in front of the hostess stand in the entryway to the restaurant/bar/and bathroom hallway. When I explained to Madison that this was unacceptable - she took extreme offense and said that this was all she had for our two week old reservation. I expressed my confusion with her practice of sitting the 2 people who walked in in front of me w/out reservations in the middle of three tables - instead of using the tables more wisely to accommodate everyone. Or, perhaps using emergency entryway seating for 2 people w/out reservations instead of for 6 people with. Still Madison was offended and explained that if we didn't want the makeshift table in the entryway, we would have to wait 30-40 minutes for them accommodate OUR decision! Then, suddenly, it dawned on Madison and she said maybe her manager could do something for us... We sat in the hotel lobby and waited for a real table (you know the kind they use for people w/reservations) and were comped a bottle of wine for our trouble by Andrew the manager. 30 minutes later, we sat. Dinner was nice, and our server Francisco? was friendly. The lesson here is 1. Make a Rez. 2. Call ahead and explain that you don't want to sit in the entryway (or the bathroom - do not assume the staff will anticipate this) . 3. Do not interact with Madison. 4. Andrew and Francisco? are nice people. 5. Do not interact with Madison. read more

I have to say I was disappointed the last time I was there. I used to go there regularly when I was planning my wedding at the brown and it had been a few years since I had been. I felt that the prices had gone up and I just frankly didn't feel it was worth it! I ordered a hot toddy that ended up being $12. Really folks - $12 for hot water, lemon and some bourbon? Also the food prices were just too high to justify. $9 for a side salad is just too much. I like the casual ambiance there so I think they need to lower the prices to match the feel of the place. I know it is the brown palace but there is a reason that people go to the tavern and not Ellyngton's, they want a casual place with prices to match. Even though I've been a regular over the years, I don't think I will be back to the tavern for awhile. If I could give half stars, I would give 2 and a half because I do like the location and the ambiance. I do love the brown palace and love going in the lobby area for a cocktail in the evenings. I martini there was $10 for straight liquor! That seems more reasonable to me and I will be return for drink there. read more

I stopped by twice. The first time was later in the evening for dessert and after dinner drinks. The restaurant was not crowded and we were seated at a table in the back corner. The bread pudding dessert was amazing. However, I went back for lunch the following day with a group. We sat at the bar. The restaurant was packed and while close tables were fine for late night, I'm not sure it works for a lunch crowd. The portions were huge, but my cheesesteak sandwich was just ok. For the price, you get more than enough food. But the food is just average. read more

So disappointing! Had to show my daughter the beautiful Brown Palace. We were hoping to sit at the bar and learn a little history, but instead we got an extremely rude bartender. Condescending! We decided we didn't want our tip to go to him, so we asked to sit at a table. We ordered the calamari and it was pretty bad. It said lightly breaded - but it was heavy and tasteless. The dry aged burger has been excellent on previous occasions. Today the food was fine, it was the bartenders service that was questionable. Sitting near the taps, a keg emptied and I was showered with beer. Down my arm...in my hair...the bartender apologizes and hands me a bar towel. Then my burger comes sans one of the toppings. The Sunset Wheat ran $5.75 a pint. A little high considering I left wearing one. This is fourth experience, and by far the worst experience there so far. The burger is typically a 4.5 of 5. I'll probably be back, but will be wearing my slicker. read more

We enjoyed the Brown Palace and spent the day admiring the beautiful hotel. Sadly, it seems the renovations will not preserve it's future. Glory of the past is being dimenished slowly. Some of the floors had cheap looking furniture added and nothing to resemble the hotels statis. It is over rated at this time. We ate in the Ships Tavern and it was very nice. Ordered a lunch meal and we all got soggy buns. No one wanted to mention this to each other and finally a younger one did. If we go back we will order our sandwiches with the bun on the side and build it ourselves. This really was a shock. Ruined the sandwich. Then the cake came. Beautiful in looks and big. It had the taste of any store bought economy cake and was a total disappointment. Just overall it was disappointing. Waiter was pleasant but the food is far below standards of any restaurant for a lot less. Doubt we will ever eat at the Ships Tavern. Why hasn't anyone mentioned the bread on the sandwiches.
