First time visiting this location. My daughter suggested we go here on a Monday. We sat at the sushi bar and were greeted immediately. My favorite thing was the chicken lettuce wraps which were a great starter. I liked the short rib potstickers as well but didn't care for the beef reduction sauce it came with but that's just personal preference. We ordered miso soup, tempura sushi rolls, spicy tuna sushi rolls and sashimi tuna. Also, we had steam rice and broccolini. Over all the food was very good, the only issue we had was miso soup was cold but they corrected that quickly and too it off our bill. The place was busy for a Monday, possibly with half price bottles on wines and sake. They had a good wine list so this was a bonus for me. Loved my first experience here last night! It's got a great upbeat vibe and we had great service - thanks so much Sathan!! Celebrated our anniversary last night and he rolled out the red carpet. Super helpful, friendly and made some great recommendations for a first-timer. The drink and food menu is extensive and lots of options for all palates. Loved the Seaweed Salad with blue crab and all our sushi was so delicious and super fresh. Especially loved the Spider Roll and the Tracey's Special Roll. Such amazing flavors and it all came out fast. We arrived at 6pm and it was quiet for Thursday night at first but then really picked up! We enjoyed our whole experience and even met a wonderful couple next to us that were celebrating a birthday. I can't say enough good things about Shinsei. I've been on two separate occasions and both times have been great. The staff is so friendly and makes recommendations. My family's table had a little wait and the manager was very communicative and accommodating by making sure we had drinks and appetizers while we waited. Outstanding service. Making a reservation was simple. We arrived 10 mins early and the hostess was very sweet and accommodating to seat us early or even grab a drink at the bar until we were ready. We've eaten here quite a few times over the years and the food is always incredible! I had dinner with friends on my last visit and everyone ordered several different things and we all shared. There wasn't one bad dish! Plus, the server was kind enough to refill our water glasses after we paid and were finishing our conversation - this never happens. We tipped very well, but I think she would have done it regardless. The valet setup could use some improvement, so I'd recommend carpooling (?) or arriving 20 minutes early for your reservation regardless of what night it is. read more

My most memorable dish is the salmon (so if you're a salmon fan, you gotta try it). This one normally comes with forbidden rice and broccolini but I requested the Brussels sprouts instead. I've heard nothing but good things about Shinsei and after my visit, I have to say this is amazing. The downstairs was packed and even though I wanted to sit at the sushi bar and watch the chefs prepare all the orders, we opted to go upstairs and sit at the bar and I'm so glad we did. It was a bit more intimate and quiet and made for a better date night feel. Evelyn was so kind and friendly and knowledgeable. She recommended the Braised Pork Steam Buns, the Short Rib Potstickers and the Modern Seaweed salad and we loved every one of them. The Steamed Buns were so soft and had a pleasant heat from the thai chili hoisin. The Potstickers we the perfect texture and the dipping sauce really brightened up the richness of the short rib. The seaweed salad...Amazing. It has definitely ruined seaweed salads for me. I can't think of anywhere else that has come even close to how amazing that salad was. After the shareables, Evelyn walked us through the sushi selection and helped us to pick out 4 rolls (Rebecca, Caterpillar, Purple Rain and the Dragon Lady Press) along with an order of Yellowtail sushi. All of the rolls were so great and had great contrasts between them. I really loved the Yellowtail. It was perfect. We ended the night with an espresso martini(with no vodka) and it was heavenly. I haven't been here in a few years after there was a roach on the wall next to my table in the terrace and the service was so terrible that most of our meal was comped. Sad to say that this is exactly what happened again after my year hiatus. It seems they cannot get their dinner service together. When I came a year ago for lunch it was fine. Dinner 2 years ago was not and same thing tonight First waiter was fine at first and then we never really saw him again. Then this other waiter came and was like why do you have 3 soy sauces on the table? You shouldn't. Well we don't know it just happened we didn't even ask! Then she poured from one soy sauce containers into one and put another in another table even after we told her we already used it and not to do that. She totally ignored us and was weirdly fixated on this situation. Next, the sushi was so subpar. The crispy rice was so crispy that you couldn't even really taste the actual rice it was so crisp. The fish on our rolls was so fishy. The avocado on our rolls was hard so clearly not fresh We also order fried rice which never came even after we asked THREE times. We waited so long for this. Finally we said, just cancel it. They go ok! Don't say sorry or anything. When we asked for the check we expressed our disappointment with the fried rice he was like yea sometimes the kitchen just runs slower than the sushi. So so so disappointing. We absolutely loved coming here. I called on a Friday night because it was my husband's birthday and he wanted to come here the hostess was so welcoming and let us get a table. And only did they'll ask us what kind of table we wanted but they also ask what kind of dessert my husband one for his birthday. When we sat down at her table our waiter remembered that it was his birthday as the hosted told him... I have to say our waiter was one of the best servers we've ever had... Shout out to Kelly kelly. He made sure that we had everything we wanted and checked on us constantly... He's also the beverage director so we had the most amazing amazing beverages that night. Had dinner reservations here thursday & it was packed-I had not heard of this place but it seemed like a mid-upscale sushi restaurant, and although the interior was decorated nice I was surprised to see the packed bar all watching football & cheering, & the waiters wearing football jerseys. There were a few tables that were pretty loud/drunk as well. I'm not sure if this is typical but it just made it feel like a sports bar rather than a restaurant. Apparently there is another part of the restaurant that is more of a restaurant feel than a bar... The food was fine but really nothing special in my opinion for the prices- we ordered the miso soup, yellowtail nigiri, the short rib potstickers, and 3 rolls: rainbow, lynae & dragon lady press. Really disappointed in the food. For such a fancy looking place, I thought the food would match, but NO. I ordered the Dragon Lady roll which is basically salmon and fried onions for $19 big ones. I was definitely expecting something well made and delicious but what I got was something equivalent to the sushi at Albertson's. It just seemed sooo pretentious. My rolls broke apart immediately when I picked them up and were small. I left feeling hungry and really insatified not wanting to spend even more money there for such little food. I really didn't even enjoy the taste of them so I can't say the test warranted the cost. My friend ordered Shishito peppers and enjoyed them (really mild not spicy). This review is about the DFW Airport Terminal D location. This place needs much work; Had to wipe my own table. My whiskey came with a small fruit fly in the bottom. The fried rice dish was cold and tasteless. The noodle dish was equally unappetizing and without any memorable character. The waiter was however fairly attentive and offered to replace the whiskey. Overall $75 for what amounts to something that is better served at the food court is not acceptable. read more

To start off the service here is always phenomenal. And I mean every single person goes out of their way to ensure you are treated like royalty. Tammy, is everything you could want in a server. She is kind, incredibly knowledgeable, and just an all around joy. The restaurant feels intimate and sophisticated without being pretentious. And then there is the food...everything we've tried is delicious. The crispy tuna appetizer is mind blowing. And believe it or not they have a wonderful filet which is really nice for those that may not be into sushi. I personally love the scallop dish, the flavor is outstanding. The Shinsei sangria is such a treat! Love that the ice cube is sangria itself although I think it would've been a nicer touch to have it contain a lychee or some sort of surprise once it melts. Trendy place with good portion size and service! Free valet (but always remember to tip). We had the blistered shishito peppers to start- none of them were spicy for any of us so for once it didn't feel like a game of Russian roulette. I'd suggest skipping on the crispy rock shrimp as it was more batter than shrimp. The most order- the shrimp dumplings were incredibly tender and juicy. We should've listened to our server and gotten two orders of these to begin with instead of trying the other potstickers. Also the chicken lettuce wraps! Plenty of meat with great flavor. Hoisin baby back ribs just fell off of the bone and the miso cod melts in your mouth. Some other things we ordered which were all good- fried rice, unagi, grilled beef tenderloin, and some sashimi.
