After 19 years of enjoying this local spot, I'm saddened to say I won't be returning because of the bar manager, Carter. In our recent interaction, I found him to be smug, impatient, and condescending. We genuinely tried to smooth things over directly with him and salvage the evening, but he seemed uninterested in resolving the situation and only made the experience worse. He talked about us to his bar patrons, pointing and laughing. Our only offense, coming in too late? (45 mins before closing) After nearly two decades as loyal customers, it was incredibly disappointing to leave feeling so disrespected. This was my second visit to Shinsei and I think it was better than the first visit! The side we sat on was with the sushi bar, although we sat at a table, I did notice this time that they put some sound softening elements on the ceiling, which did seem to help the noise level was very good. Our waitress was amazing!! It seemed she had been there a while and knew everything!! I loved her! We started with the pork dumplings and Hamachi and Pear appetizer along with Katina's Sticky Rice... think the sticky rice was my favorite with Hamachi coming in a close second!! Ive been to Shinsei a few times for work dinners and they have never disappointed. The quality of food is fantastic, the vibe of the restaurant itself is moody and relaxing, and the service has always been quick and efficient. We always order family style here so Ive tried most of the menu at this point and everything is delicious. My favorite is probably the wagyu dumplings which were mouthwateringly delicious. I really enjoyed Shensei. The location of the restaurant itself is pretty cool, as it is tucked into a strip of other establishments. I recommend car sharing as there is limited parking. I really like the interior of Shinsei. While it is tight as far as space between customers, it's not so tight that it's uncomfortable. The interior is more akin to an east coast restaurant, as opposed to a Texas restaurant. Onto the food! It was also amazing, and our waitress was great. She let me have a half portion of fried rice as opposed to a full portion, even though the half portion wasn't on the menu. The drinks were awesome too. I'd definitely go back to Shinsei. I think we have found our new go to place for Asian food. A co-worker of mine recommended this place, and we decided to try it out one Saturday night. Upon walking inside, the ambiance was city casual with Asian flare. Very welcoming. Our table was upstairs and the decor did not disappoint on the second level. It even had a very well stocked bar, which was convenient for their fabulous cocktails. We started with the Modern Seaweed Salad and Gochujang Cauliflower. The Gochujang Cauliflower was simply delicious. My SO, who is not a cauliflower fan, could not get enough of it. The seaweed salad was not my favorite, but that's because the texture of the large pieces of seaweed is not ideal to me. The flavor was spot on and was delicious. My SO ordered the Slow Braised Short Ribs with noodles. When I say his eyes rolled back into his head upon first bite, I am not exaggerating. He said this is simply the best short rib preparation he's ever had - period. There was not one single drop of food left on his plate when he was done. He also tried their Old Fashioned Flask cocktail and absolutely loved it. He had at least two and still talked about how much he liked them on the drive home. For my main entree, I had the Kendall and Dragon Lady Press rolls. They both were divine, fresh, and flavorful. Probably some of the best sushi I've had in a long time. It was so good that my SO, who isn't the biggest fan of sushi (especially raw), gladly ate up all of my leftovers. He, too, thought they were amazing. While I was stuffed to the brim, my SO was dying to try their State Fair Fried Cookie Dough and Ice Cream. As full as I was, I forced myself to at least eat one piece, and I'm so glad that I did. It is like having the state fair delight without the crowd, blistering summer heat, or the crazy parking. Definitely a must try - even once. All in all we cannot wait to go back. Both had similar salty/tart undertones and both drinks weren't very strong. We ordered the Amanda roll 9/10 which was amazing and perfectly balanced, the Spider roll 8/10 which was a bit bland, and the Dragon Lady 2/10 which tasted like it was torched but had a leftover butane flavor on the salmon which was off putting. I can't believe I have never been here before! 5/5 stars hands down! I would say I may like it even better than Uchi. The price is unbeatable for the quality and amount of food you get. A separate area for the bar section that is separated from the restaurant area. So it keeps things very well separated. The food is good overall. The selection is large. The best part of this restaurant is its ambient. The music is nice but not loud, so you can actually have a conversation. The place is on the darker side (as in less light, not as in Darth Vader). This place exceeded my expectations. It's an absolute gem. Dark lighting, dark wood, a classy joint indeed. Tammy was a wonderful server. She's been doing it for a long time and knew how to treat her patrons right! In fact, my dad was mentioning that one of his favorite servers usually was there at lunch, and then Tammy came around the corner to serve us. Her ears must have been rining. She suggested the Old Fashioned to start and it did not disappoint. The additional of vanilla bean added a bit of sweetness that I prefer in my Old Fashioneds. PLUS, it comes from a flask which is the cutest, but also hilariously un-classy presentation there is. I had two. We tried a variety of items including the short rib potstickers (get them), fried rice (oozy egg, yes please), the Kendall Roll, the famous Tammy Roll (with deep red tuna, lime and jalapeno), pressed sushi (layers of fish and rice, no nori) and octopus. The octopus was served thinly sliced with equally thinly sliced lime that brightened the whole presentation. They also served a new Chicken Karage which was damn good and had the comforting vibe that you can't get from cold fish. Tammy was sweet and brought us out a bit of Katina's Crispy Rice to try because it was one of her favorites. A nice touch! We finished with a white chocolate bread pudding that was ridiculously tasty. My dad loves this place and I can understand why. So happy we were able to try it! read more

After some mixed reviews I decided I wanted to give Shinsei a chance and chose it as well the venue for another birthday dinner after being tempted by the menu. I just want to say this review is in not a reflection on our service; Teddy is awesome and friendly- he was very helpful and fun. As a seafood and sushi lover I was really excited to order various things to taste and I did. We were told about "Chef Elvis" who does have epic hair, But I actually ended up not choosing any of his "specialty" menu items and opted for these - super white tuna sashimi- 5 nice big slices of buttery white fish. I asked if it was actually escolar (which is technically the same just another name for "white tuna" and actually not tuna at all but snake mackeral!) Ironically had just asked Teddy what "forbidden rice" was and then mentioned to Teddy that escolar is forbidden on some menus especially in Japan as it can cause tummy drama for some patrons! I'm grateful this is not the case for me. The more you know, right?! Moving right along I also had the following; Prime beef hot rock; this is a fun experience I've never tried prior to this night- a big hot stone in a bed of huge salt crystals and your raw meat slices on the side. I recommend first dipping your meat in the salt and then placing on the rock for just 5 seconds or so and then flipping it and splashing some soy sauce or au jus (which we had left over from our short rib potstickers which were packed full of meat; tasty but wish they had a little mushroom or some veggie to lighten the bite) and I splashed that on top for a nice seared finishing touch! Rounding out my selections I was excited to try the shishito peppers but definitely a bit disappointed they were not charred and the sweet sauce they arrived with I don't think was ideal; I decided to eat a few and take the rest home so I could grill them and get more roastiness which is what I'm used to from other restaurants. The snow crab spring rolls were also just okay; I was surprised they seemed over stuffed with basil and hardly enough crab to make them memorable or different, the peanut sauce was also just a standard type. From the "bigger plates" side of the menu I also tried my moms grilled beef tenderloin with red onions, scallion whipped potatoes which was very delicious- I simply did not notice the citrus marinade mentioned on the menu. My babe could only have soup and the white miso soup with mushrooms, tofu and kelp was okay. I very much loved and appreciated my birthday surprise, a huge MASS of pink cotton candy on a copper baton served on a plank with deep fried chocolate ganache, fried bananas, vanilla ice cream, with caramel sauce on the side. Super sinful and yummy! Overall I just hoped to be more pleasantly surprised subtle flavors that could be unique to this restaurant, for me I don't think I would venture all the way back here to try anything else (except maybe a few Elvis specials perhaps?) and I could see how the acoustics are also a turn off as the noise level is pretty loud and I saw that mentioned a lot in other reviews. I really want to give it 3 1/2 stars. This is a great place to go if you want to see and be seen. It kind of has the vibe of a good place to take your girlfriend if she's 15 years younger than you. Lots of conversations about stocks and transactions. That was kind of weird. The drinks are OK and the service is excellent. Music is loud -almost clubby. Oh yeah, the food. Definitely not one of the best sushi restaurants in town infinitely edible. The sashimi dish is really neat. The waiter asked me if I would like the fish decoration fried after we were done eating the dish.
