Yep, it's a Eurasian store on Allen street
    Kevin K.

Okay, so here's the cusp of this little Eurasian market - it's here for your convenience, and convenience is a good thing. Take this place. For instance. Where else can you find Belgian stoopwafels, Robinson's barley lemon concentrates, McVities Hob-nobs, Tim-tam-ohs, St Michel galettes (the official cookie of Air France), Malaysian Laksa mixes and Icelandic salted licorice all on the same roof? If you have done your share of globetrotting you would recognize a good chunk of the offerings here. "Oh, wonderful", you may say. Let's buy some stuff up and give due to this mistress of global commerce. Well, here's the issue - remember that class in human geography or anthropology you took back in freshman year of your undergrad to fulfill some core/Gen Ed requirement, and it was an easy survey class that was shallow low hanging fruit for your precious tuition dollars (you were doing it for the easy A)? Well, this store is like that. Yeah, it's got exotic thrills, but you sure pay more from your pockets for the McVities Hobnobs or the Ribena (clue: try Meyers of Keswick if you are forbidden by the terms of house arrest to leave Manhattan, or the Butcher's block in Sunnyside if you want to save more bucks). Just remember that if you really know what you are doing, there are better places to go for most of the items in the store, but that would require local knowledge. Well, in the meantime, here's that easy passing grade for exotic foods. Just don't make it a habit - blissful expensive ignorance is not a great way to live your life. Oh, and P.S: they don't allow photography inside the store. So comparison shopping is OUT.

Some snax along with my new year haul

I came here with a few friends not to long ago during Chinese new year. It is by far one of the best places to get snacks from. Has a large variety of UK, neatherlands and Irish snacks. Not to mention good old Asian goodies too from Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and even Korea. My fave thing is the crisps (chips) my friend purchased a bag of beer chips. And was really good. I walked away with a small bottle of elder flower lemonade, a box of Cadbury roses chocolate, 2 bags of chips some kit katz and other to yummiest. Well be back soon.

I used to go to this place when they were still in the LES at their former location. Always great to find a place that carries food from Europe, and the world, when you feel homesick. However... my last visit was very disappointing!!! It was overpriced, compared to other places in NYC that carry the same items. Still, I purchased a few things.. and to my disappointment my $6 chocolate/marzipan was OLD! Tasted dry and terrible, the chocolate was even discolored which I noticed only after I took a bite. Will not go back there!

    Imported Kit-Kat bars.

Check the expiration dates. I bought Cadbury chocolate that was beyond stale. The wrapper showed it was over a year expired.

They also have a vast amount of goodies, specifically chips, cookies and candy from Japan, Korea and China. There is also a section with stationary items and toys for all ages. The market has a small seating area which is great for grabbing a quick bite or soft serve ice cream, in my case, near the ice cream station. I love black sesame ice cream and put my colleague on to it, and she loved it as well. It was a nice treat on a hot 80 degree day in NYC. This space is in a great location in Cobble Hill, not far from transit and shops. The best part is it's clean and well lit. Will return to try some of their prepared foods and packaged salty items.

Hashi feels like an actual grocery store with aisles of Asian goods. While it's still a bit pricey, it's the next best thing without traveling to Chinatown. My favorite part of their ready to eat hot foods/sushi section. I decided to get a Sashimi/Sushi Combo ($23), which I also got to enjoy right away. They have a dining area for you as well. Plus, you get 50% off at Fujissa located inside with $10+ purchase at Hashi Market (just show your receipt when you order). And don't miss out on the 50% off discount after 7pm for the hot foods/sushi, which is an hour earlier than Ten Ichi Mart.

Nor can I get anyone who "does" the online service management or get relevant answers from the Contact Us link. Last night I got to the checkout, and then the site kept asking me for the order number. ??? That ended the order going through. Mohammed tried to help by doing it verbally over the phone but there were too many items to deal with. It had been a go-to-shop for me since it opened, but after an accident I can't easily go in-person and now apparently I can't shop there at all or find anyone who is responsible/helpful for the site's customer functionality.

What was once a family-owned, excellent grocery store run by wonderful people who cared is now a Key Food with a different name. I mean that literally; they were bought by Key Food during the pandemic, and they laid off all the employees (that we loved), brought in more self-checkout, and the quality of the produce has fallen off a cliff, while the prices have climbed to extortionist levels. For the most part, the replacement staff is quite nice and usually helpful (there are a couple bad apples that seem upset you need assistance). The guys behind the prepared food counter will do a solid job on your sandwich, and the cashiers are usually pleasant and almost always efficient. They still have a rewards program where if you spend around $250 and you get like $10 credit. (Hey, it's better than nothing.) The expansion of the store a few years back means they truly have just about everything, and the beer and ice cream selections are actually phenomenal (but overpriced). However, produce we buy is occasionally going bad already, and the prices are wildly out of control. I paid $7 for two onions last week. It becomes harder and harder to justify shopping here when it's more expensive than Fresh Direct, and vastly more pricey than the fruit and vegetable spots a few blocks away. I don't risk the meat and fish any longer (not with Paisanos and Fish Tales in the hood), although Bell & Evans chicken is quite reliable. Basically, Brooklyn Fare went from an incredible market to have across street to a last-resort for items I forgot to purchase elsewhere in the neighborhood, at reasonable prices. They know we're coming in when we need something, and we're going to pay for it. Despite these shortcomings, it's still great to have a corner store that has just about everything. I can still run out and grab some milk for my wife's cookies when I've finished the last drop and she looks particularly stabby. But it's going to cost $7 for half a gallon.
