I stopped by an hour before closing so I didn't really get to try the things that I wanted to like their matcha and sushi. I did however pickup a few things. I bought custard filled Taiyaki for my daughters and some crab chips. I also purchased a personal sized brown sugar latte and brown sugar milk tea. I didn't really like the milk tea because it was a bit too sweet for me but everything else was good. The store is very neat and clean. Everything is organized well which made things easy to find. It's a nice addition to the neighborhood.

New Japanese grocery store in Downtown Brooklyn! I was super impressed with the quality of the sashimi, nigiri, and onigiri and am eager to try their other bentos. For matcha lovers, they also have a whole matcha bar inside (decent quality!) for $6.80-$7. The store is bright and neatly organized, and has such a great variety of everything you could need: Rice, ramen, cooking utensils, and even cute miffy tote bags. Will definitely be back to shop here more!

Hashi Markets have been popping all over Manhattan and this one follows suit in Brooklyn. While there are a couple of smaller Japanese marts a few blocks away, this one definitely feels more like an Asian Supermarket. The space alone is quite large with generously spaced aisles and even a matcha dessert bar with some seating in one section. While the packaged food, produce and novelty goods aren't the cheapest compared to the larger grocers in Chinatown, this place offers a large variety and convenient access for locals without having to travel into Manhattan. A welcome addition to the neighborhood!

The store is new and very clean and organized. I was able to purchase some snacks that I tried before in South. They have an extensive ice cream section, sandwiches, salads, and some hot food. They also have a small dining area for eating. I will be back to purchase more things but today I was just scoping out.

So this was completely full of sushi boxes a few hours earlier and when I came back, it was pretty much all gone

Welcome to the hood, Hashi Market! This store literally just opened this weekend and I'm pretty sad that I missed the first opening day celebrations as apparently there was a live giant tuna cutting session. I would've loved to have seen that! My friend and I happened to walk past by chance (on Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Smith) on our way to the movies and knew we had to check it out with all the grand opening decorations. I had never heard of Hashi Market before, but my friend told me how it's really popular and there's a few in Manhattan. I really love Asian specialty stores because you just can't find some of this stuff anywhere else and I love the unique food items. I wanted to check out the sushi and hot food section immediately. Not only were they offering 20% off for these, but I figured a Japanese specialty store would probably have amazing sushi. They certainly did! There were rows and rows of freshly packed sushi, which looked incredible plus trays of sashimi, bowls of sake don, and even trays of Hokkaido uni (sea urchin)!! I will definitely be coming back to buy a tray so I can make some delicious uni pasta! There's also a hot food section with bento boxes and unagi don that looked mouth watering. Oh, and don't miss out on the variety of onogiri (rice balls) that they offer. They had salmon, tuna, tuna salad and I think I even saw crawfish??? That's wild haha. I should've picked one up, but I was content with just having sushi to start. I purchased a spicy tuna roll and a mixed tuna and salmon nigiri tray to take home. Both were excellent and honestly if I ever want to get sushi or a don bowl or bento box on my way home, this is definitely where I will be stopping by from now on. In addition to all of the fresh food, there was an aisle dedicated to ramen packets and other snack items. I also saw freezers of Japanese desserts and other frozen foods. I didn't go down every aisle, but there are definitely tons of skin care products, and cutesy stuff for children like Pokémon plush. I even picked up a Pikachu decorated hand cream! This place really does have it all and it's definitely more than just still convenience store. The aisles are very well spaced so you don't feel cramped and the cashiers were really friendly when I checked out. Such a great addition to the area and can't wait to come back!

    Hashi market tax on kimchee

Really excited when this opened nearby...great selection of grocery items as well as hot food items. However there are some shady practices when it comes to charging taxes on grocery items. They randomly charge 8.8% sales tax on certain grocery items that should be tax exempt. I'm not sure if this is also happening at the Manhattan locations. Unclear if this is being remitted to the state tax authorities. Someone from the city or state finance department should definitely take a closer look at their tax filings. In the screenshot, you can see that they charged sales tax on the kimchee but not the char siu sauce. When I asked the cashier, he said there's nothing he can do about it and the manager isn't available. I didn't notice this until recently, because I don't often ask for my receipt and the cashiers here don't proactively give you the receipt unless you ask. This happened again last night when I went to restock on kimchee.

Their prices are noticeably more expensive than other places but no one should compromise when it comes to eating seafood. As someone who has had food poisoning a few times, I like to subscribe to this mindset. From Swordfish and Tuna to Shellfish and Filets, I was told they make the trek to Fulton Fish Market (in Hunt's Point, the Bronx) daily. That's good to know. There's also a freezer packed with frozen selections such as Snow Crab legs and Calamari. I would like to see more varieties of fish ( like Skate and Monkfish) while envisioning an addition of upscale gourmet items/seafood accompaniments other than Soy and Teriyaki Sauce. If you want to be assured of eating fresh seafood knowing you're paying slightly more, check them out. (I bought two Branzini for $31).

In my opinion, there's nothing like a stand alone fish market (as opposed to those that have a little fish section in a gourmet shop) unless it's Fairway or a similar store. I absolutely adore seafood and it's also my favorite animal protein. I've been shopping here since forever and I really like their variety of seafood. There's even a sushi section (although I've never tried) that appears to be appealing and fresh. On my favorite food holiday--Christmas Eve--when the Italian (and my family) tradition is everything seafood (no less than 7), I always find myself shopping here. This market is very crowded around that time of the year. This store has fresh and frozen assortment of both shellfish and seafood. Mussels, clams, scallops, squid, shrimp, Branzino, trout, filet of sole, filet of trout, filet of whiting, sea bass, lump crab meat, king crab sticks, salmon, crab cakes and a lot more. I tend to stay away from Tilipia and Basa. You might notice at any fish market, it's the cheapest fish by the pound. And that's because it's imported from murky waters. At least that's what I've read and believe. In addition to a variety of seafood, there are various accompaniments & condiments such as cocktail sauces, Panko breadcrumbs, tarter sauce, fish fry batters, etc. I don't think they carry every variety of fish, but there's enough. And it's fresh. One thing to note---at times, they will sell out of certain fish. That's when you put plan B into place after the disappointment. BTW, I bought one pound of clean squid ringlets. I made a fresh sauce to accompany my squid ink pasta :) Good stuff here.

What was once a family-owned, excellent grocery store run by wonderful people who cared is now a Key Food with a different name. I mean that literally; they were bought by Key Food during the pandemic, and they laid off all the employees (that we loved), brought in more self-checkout, and the quality of the produce has fallen off a cliff, while the prices have climbed to extortionist levels. For the most part, the replacement staff is quite nice and usually helpful (there are a couple bad apples that seem upset you need assistance). The guys behind the prepared food counter will do a solid job on your sandwich, and the cashiers are usually pleasant and almost always efficient. They still have a rewards program where if you spend around $250 and you get like $10 credit. (Hey, it's better than nothing.) The expansion of the store a few years back means they truly have just about everything, and the beer and ice cream selections are actually phenomenal (but overpriced). However, produce we buy is occasionally going bad already, and the prices are wildly out of control. I paid $7 for two onions last week. It becomes harder and harder to justify shopping here when it's more expensive than Fresh Direct, and vastly more pricey than the fruit and vegetable spots a few blocks away. I don't risk the meat and fish any longer (not with Paisanos and Fish Tales in the hood), although Bell & Evans chicken is quite reliable. Basically, Brooklyn Fare went from an incredible market to have across street to a last-resort for items I forgot to purchase elsewhere in the neighborhood, at reasonable prices. They know we're coming in when we need something, and we're going to pay for it. Despite these shortcomings, it's still great to have a corner store that has just about everything. I can still run out and grab some milk for my wife's cookies when I've finished the last drop and she looks particularly stabby. But it's going to cost $7 for half a gallon.
