Same price but charged $2 more/lb for (a lot) of the red
    Yvonne M.

Mozzarella four days past its sell by. Fiddlehead ferns that are brown and withered and disgusting. Wild mushrooms dessicated. Wide open tulips $4 more than better quality in the neighborhood. The high prices do not reflect this poor quality. And then I bought red and white endive - same price, $6.99/lb (which is high). But the cashier removed the red ones from the bag with her bare hands, that had just accepted cash, and weighed them out on their own. She charged me $8.99/lb for them. I said they were the same price, and that the red is not the long red treviso (maybe she was mixing them up). She looked at me, didn't reply. Rang me up. I said again, the endives are actually the same price. Her response? Just stared at me and handed me the receipt. Flat-eyed, no expression. Really? Bye, Union Market. I don't know what your problem is (bad management? poor training? contempt for customers? low staff morale?), but it's consistent. I have other options.

I use Union Market on a weekly basis to pick up specific items. If you are in need if pitted Kalamata Olives in brine, you will find them here. If you are in need of fresh Mozzarella they sell it in two different sizes. If you need Little Neck Clams they have them and they are very fresh. They sell Ladybird cakes at a lower price than Ladybird sells them herself. Steve's Key Lime pie is available for less than Steve sell's them himself. Nothing in this store is inexpensive, but nobody in Park Slope appears to be broke.

Hanging around Park Slope recently I was walking through a mostly residential neighborhood and was surprised to come across a "full feature" market right on a corner that wasn't a bodega or small deli. Peeking my head in I decided this place had potential so I went in for a visit. The first thing that greeted me were baked goods near a beautiful display of produce. That was enough to get my attention for about five minutes as I picked out muffin to munch on. I walked around the store and checked out their various sections. It's not the biggest store in the world, but these folks manage to cram a lot in there. Towards the back on the right hand side is a rather extensive cheese section, and near the registers is the deli area which includes whole roasted chickens (which smelled wonderful) and other pre-prepared foods. This store also carries a good assortment of organic goods from grains to snacks. I also noticed some fresh prepared pastas and higher end sauces in the cold section. The staff at the store was friendly and the cashiers efficient. I must confess however that the cornbread and sunflower seed muffin I picked was much drier than I expected. The flavor was okay, but really nothing to write home about. After eating the muffin top, I wound up saving the rest for later. Normally I would've devoured the thing in one shot. I could see myself re-evaluating this market if I make more purchases in the future, but for now I think "A-OK" sums it up nicely.

Berries at Union Market. Note: blueberries are listed at $3.99 per package, despite what they might tell you at checkout ($4.99)

Just saw somebody packing shredded cheese with their bare hands, I don't know, but I think that's just disgusting

This is a brilliant little grocery with all the essentials and quite a bit of Asian variety…read moreavailable too, along with a small produce selection. There's a lot packed in there! It's a good choice for coffee, snacks, but also fennel, vegan food, kimchi, or eucalyptus cuttings (and, like many small grocery stores, some things are better deals than others). Importantly for the neighborhood, Bad Wife also sell live plants and flowers at very reasonable prices. In the spring and summer, they'll often have flowering plants available. I've always had great interactions with the staff here, and am a fan of the place.

Earlier today, I purchased several plants. In the evening, I returned to the store to return those…read moreitems, for a refund. I no longer wanted those plants. Mrs. Lee refused to accept the return. She referred to a sign that read, plants are not returnable. That particular sign was displayed at at the back of the plant section, on a high shelf. Interestingly enough, at the cash register, there is a sign that states, "Refund policy provided within 2 days receipt." It is mandatory for stores to visibly display their return policy at the cash register. 'The Bad Wife' failed to do so. Mrs. Lee's attitude was rude and dismissive despite being told return policies must be clearly visible by the cash register.
