This is a brilliant little grocery with all the essentials and quite a bit of Asian variety available too, along with a small produce selection. There's a lot packed in there! It's a good choice for coffee, snacks, but also fennel, vegan food, kimchi, or eucalyptus cuttings (and, like many small grocery stores, some things are better deals than others). Importantly for the neighborhood, Bad Wife also sell live plants and flowers at very reasonable prices. In the spring and summer, they'll often have flowering plants available. I've always had great interactions with the staff here, and am a fan of the place. read more

Earlier today, I purchased several plants. In the evening, I returned to the store to return those items, for a refund. I no longer wanted those plants. Mrs. Lee refused to accept the return. She referred to a sign that read, plants are not returnable. That particular sign was displayed at at the back of the plant section, on a high shelf. Interestingly enough, at the cash register, there is a sign that states, "Refund policy provided within 2 days receipt." It is mandatory for stores to visibly display their return policy at the cash register. 'The Bad Wife' failed to do so. Mrs. Lee's attitude was rude and dismissive despite being told return policies must be clearly visible by the cash register. read more

I've lived around the corner from this place for years, and had assiduously avoided it, pretty much 90-95% due to its ridiculous name, which I still struggle with. Nevertheless, as the pandemic has settled in and local shopping has been our only option, I've begrudgingly started to incorporate it into my shopping routine more frequently. They definitely feature some of the best and freshest produce you can find in this neighborhood, and also specialize in sauces/materials for Asian cuisine/cooking as well as plants and flowers--you'll find stuff here beyond what you would--or in a higher quality than you would normally find--in most similar neighborhood markets, at least in this area. Beyond that, a pretty standard market--you'll find your good deals/interesting assortment of products (hummus, craft beer, nice selection of coffee beans) as well as areas where there selection seems sparse or overpriced (milk, bread, canned beans/veggies). They're careful and assiduous regarding COVID protocols and service is efficient and friendly. Now if only they'd do something about that name... read more

I'm on line at 8:44 pm and the workers are wrapping everything up and it's even difficult to walk down the aisles. They close at 9. I'm being given a difficult time because I need to pay in cash and they already put "the cash in the basement and have to get it". Why have a sign that says you close at 9 and say you close at 9 when asked but they are closed for business well before that time? All this lack of appreciation for customers and their prices are higher than inflation prices and surrounding grocers in the area. The Bad Price! I've been going to this place since May this year when I moved back to Park Slope from Cali. They have just what I need most of the time. Everyone is so friendly and helpful there. I love that they have tons of eco-friendly, organic & non-chemical stuff and I'm very pleased with their selections and how organized and clean this place is. I don't know what I would do without this small but mighty store. It has all the staples I need so it's super convenient for me to run over if I've forgotten something (like an onion, lemon, parsley, etc.). The prices are very reasonable, and the quality of the produce is excellent. I once saw a staff member going through the boxes of cherry tomatoes to throw out the bad ones! They also have a very nicely curated selection of Asian ingredients and specialty products that you might not find at a typical supermarket (Tiger Sugar boba popsicles, anyone?). It's family-run from what I can tell, so I have the impression that everything is hand-selected and "vetted" by the family that runs this place. I've usually been able to find what I need, although the other day I had trouble finding dried anchovies for making dukbokki (Korean rice cakes), which surprised me because this place stocks frozen rice cakes. That said, the staff did their best to try to help me find what I needed, even going downstairs to ask the boss. Besides groceries, I've also gotten planters and flowers here. I've lived in the neighborhood since 2008, but I really appreciated Bad Wife during the Covid 19 pandemic. I prefer Asian food and have not felt confortable going to the larger Asian grocery stores in Sunset Park or Manhattan. So I was excited to find homemade kimchi at Bad Wife. I also picked up Japanese curry, dashi, seaweed, kombu and fresh mint. They also have a large pack of amazing vegetable siomai for around $7. Lunch! Their frozen section has the different dumplings, special seafood balls that are included in ramen and hotpot. They do have small packs of rice, pad thai sauce and noodles. Of course, they have the healthy vegan items and different cheeses, fresh produce, snacks, etc that most Park Slope families prefer. I stopped in here to pick up some produce and was highly impressed by the offerings--organic apples, verdant bundles of asparagus, plump tomatoes on the vine, real miso, and more. I was also impressed with the frozen foods section, which boasts a variety of Asian foods, vegan and organic food, non-dairy ice creams, and fancy gelato. The dried fruit and chocolate selection was also impressive. The cashier (possibly the owner) was very friendly. When in the southern part or Park Slope, I always try to stop by here before heading home because this is a nice spot for me to pick up a few items, like Kimchi and some fruit. It's a two room store that has a economical layout without making it like a claustrophobic maze. There's staples and Asian imports miked within the shelves What I love the most is that they make their own Napa Cabbage Kimchi and even have vegan versions of it. It's pretty good Kimchi in my opinion, I like buying it when it's made by small shops like this, and even at HMart. Sometimes I get sick of the same bottled brands that you can find most everywhere. Since it's something I am always eating, I love 'The Bad Wife' because I think she is like Michael Jackson "Bad' If I am wrong then I don't want to know the story behind the name. read more

I love the Bad Wife grocery, name and all. They have everything you need for an Asian household, which is rare in Park Slope. I just got a ton of their homemade kimchi, gochuchang, and wrappers and all three of those things would be next to impossible to find unless I went to Whole Foods - where they would be up-charged and "artsy". Just for fun, i went to 3 markets in the area looking for a few regular items. There was some time to kill and the curiosity was killing me. So I went to Peppermill, The Bad Wife, and Food Train (the one a few doors north of the bad wife). The bad wife was cheaper by sometimes up to 33%. But then again, Food Train seems to be notorious on yelp for overcharging so this may not be the best index. The service was amazing. The girl at the front door gave a sincere greeting which can be shocking. I was looking at dish soaps, feeling entertained by all of the options when the guy who working towards the back of the store eagerly ran downstairs. 30 seconds later he popped back up with a box of a completely new flavor! (Ok, new scent). I think that's all that needs to be said. read more

3.5 stars, really -- I can't really be a 'fan' of a grocery store, but in the context of small neighborhood bodegas, this is a good one. I really like this place, it's friendly, has, for the size, a great selection of merchandise, good, high quality organic and asian specialty items in the dry goods, the best prices on good chocolates, etc. Really a very wide array of delicious foods. Nice selection of plants, flowers, pumpkins, etc on the outside racks (depending on the season). I like supporting a small business, and when I can I try to shop here over the other, less friendly stores in the area (why, there's one just a block down the street), or the ones where they let things go moldy (why, there's one of those in the other direction). Not perfect. Wish they didn't have the 10 dollar credit card minimum, but there you go... Would be nice if they had more organic fresh veggies more reasonably priced. But everything seems to be selected and cared for well, never have gotten a bad item, and some of the prices are the cheapest in the area. Great store, really good produce and selection, prices are reasonable for a small shop and FANTASTIC plants and flowers. I have picked up really beautiful houseplants and now visit every week to buy the cheapest and most beautiful flowers in the neighborhood. Best produce in South Slope. Everyone who works there is friendly and there's always great retro music playing (I want that playlist!). Can be a little pricey, but no more than Whole Foods. I live just a few blocks from this store, past the Union Market. But I do almost all of my food shopping here. Why? Well, the simple reason is that Mr. and Mrs. Lee have done a super fantastic job running this store. The produce has great variety and is always very fresh. More importantly, they pay great attention to the quality of produce. They only sell what is good. They would spend time to re-package strawberries, for example, taking out the rotten ones. So what you are buying are not just some pre-packaged mass-distributed product, but well-curated products. I have seen them do this to green beans, blueberries, tomatoes, etc. And the best part is that the price is in general cheaper than other stores. They are also one of the best places in the neighborhood to buy plants. In the summer their store front becomes a beautiful nursery, full of colorful flowers. Mr. and Mrs. Lee also take the time to know their customers. I can see that many other people who shop there, like me, chit-chat with the owners at the register. They really do care about their customers and their motto is truly "customer is number 1". Another example is that they always check the eggs at the register to make sure none was broken! Mrs. Lee also started selling her own homemade organic kimchee in recent months. She sells the regular kind, a vegetarian kind, a non-spicy white cabbage kind (only lightly fermented), and a spicy daikon kind. I've tried all of them except the vegetarian kind, and they were all very good. This store also has a great selection of ingredients for Asian food cooking. As you can see, I really like this place. I feel that I can buy great products here at a decent price. And I really treasure the great relationship established between me and the owners. I need cilantro and this place is less than a block from my apartment. I've had lees than perfect experiences in the past, but really needed the cilantro for a dinner party. I don't know how I never noticed this place before. I've walked past it many times but it somehow has always escaped my periphery vision. I used to frequent Union Market, but now I think this is going to be my goto place. It doesn't have meats (well, it has packaged deli stuff), but it has a great selection of everything else, and FAR cheaper than Union. Love this place. It's a little bit expensive for some things like toiletries and plants, but no more than your typical Park Slope market. The produce is always fresh, they carry Halo Top in a bunch of flavors (hard to find in Brooklyn!), and they have a great selection of beer. I also appreciate the tasteful choice in Asian imports like their frozen Daifuku, Nori, tons of noodle varieties, and seasonings. Not to mention the cheese selection is divine. Variety is a central element to this place and I'm always running into new things to try. Good products, terrible service. Generally overpriced. I called in advance to ask if they carried a hard-to-find product, carrot seed essential oil, which they did, and quoted me a price. My mother went the following week to pick it up, and they said they didn't carry it. I immediately called, to find out that they did carry it, but told me she was looking for an oral suppliment, which she absolutely wasn't!!
