Not cheap and a little small but the produce and meat are of decent quality. I often come here to buy fruit and other meats and they have a great cheese selection. I come here to peruse because they carry some fancier items you'd see at Whole Foods. Service here has always been warm and attentive. I was working in the area and feeling a bit under the weather, so I stopped into this store in search of some kind of healthy juice that would give me a bit of a boost. The store itself is beautifully arranged and felt extremely clean to me despite what some of the other reviews mentioned on here. I can't comment on the service because ultimately I had sticker shock looking at everything in this store including the juice selection. I know that Park Slope is one of the pricier places to live as far as the boroughs go but damn. The only thing I considered buying from here was a drink that was made out of sea moss because it was on sale...but the idea of it turned my stomach and I left. read more

The unusually rude cashiers are more remarkable than the fading produce, the rancid ground lamb (I opened it at home and the smell sent me across the room. Threw it out at once.), and the well-expired sell-by dates on perishable cheese (mozzarella). The cashiers ignore a greeting from a customer, keep customers waiting while they chat to their cashier-colleague, and flat out refuse to engage when asked a question. There must be an exceptional cashier who tries to be professional but the culture at all the Union Markets is uniformly and remarkably hostile, and the pressure to engage in the same behaviors must be intense. Why? Look up the chain. Only exceptionally bad a management at Union Market would tolerate or foster this kind of culture. I read all the bad reviews for UM and am kinda baffled. I live near there, go there often and have NEVER had a problem with the quality or freshness of their produce or meats/fish/dairy. The store is very clean, they even wash the sidewalks out front regularly. The staff is courteous but I don't expect them to act like my best friend. If you do, I suggest you work in retail for a while and see what that experience is like. It's like all the complaining has more to do with trying to punish a good neighborhood grocery store for some perceived slight. Quality has gone way, way downhill over the years. They're constantly selling items that are either past their sell-by date or rotten - you can't trust what you buy. Have had to return items dozens of times and no longer will buy produce, meat, fish or cheese here. It gives the appearance of being "upscale" but for perishable items it is not. read more

Incredibly rude cashiers. At this location, multiple cashiers (who all happened to be African-American) literally YELLED AT ME while waiting on line. Yesterday, while waiting on line, a cashier with dreadlocks screamed at me "EXCUSE ME!" when i did not move out of the way fast enough. (He was behind me and I could not see where he needed to go). Racial tensions seem to be at an all-time high in NYC. Me being a white male, this is one of many incidences I have had with African-American cashiers at this location (and another Union Market location on Flatbush in Prospect Heights). Aside from the astonishingly bad experiences i have had with cashiers here, the prices are astronomical. For a 24 ounce Rao's Marinara Sauce, you are paying 8.49 here at this location. Key Food on 7th Avenue charges $5.99 for the same exact Rao's Marinara Sauce in the same exact size. So basically, you are paying $2.50 higher for the same bottle at this location than you would at Key Food, a 10-minute walk away. Manhattan prices with a plethora of attitude thrown in on top of it all. For deli or fresh things, they have top-quality products. For anything packaged or sealed, you are paying about 30% higher than a Key Food in Park Slope for example. Makes no sense to buy sealed cookies, marinara sauce etc. because of the huge price increase at this location or chain. I just want to mention that the incident I had yesterday, I went back to this location and complained to the managers DIRECTLY about how badly I was treated, AND even confronted the cashier himself for screaming at me. My point being, I am not hiding behind my computer. I physically went to this location and said my peace. I have no reason to lie to anyone about what transpired. To make matters worse, over 90% of the time I visited this location, all the cashiers refused to say "hello" or "thank you" Like almost NEVER. All you hear is a condescending "Would you like a bag, sir?" Actually, you can leave out the "sir" and simply say "Hello" and "Thank you" That is all I ask, but I guess the cashiers here think they are God's gift and above a simple "Hello" and "Thank you." Would love to know what the hiring process was here, based on the treatment by cashiers here. I just want to make clear that when I complained about the horrible treatment i got from multiple employees here, I spoke to 2 managers and the cashier who screamed at me. However, I did not leave my name and number and want to speak to any other manager. My point being, I did not make a formal complaint, because it goes against my grain, but believe me it would have been deserved. This place is pretty damn expensive, but you get what you pay for, and in this case, I don't mind paying a little more if I can get QUALITY. I truly have grown to lower my expectations regarding grocery shopping in New York City. But the Union market in Park Slope is among the worst places to buy groceries in my experience. Their dairy products are consistently aged to one or two days prior to expiration. Their produce is really terrible. I came home with some fresh raspberries, blueberries, and other fruit. Literally all of it, $20 worth, was rotten. I saw an employee standing there opening cartons of blueberries, picking out the ones with mold on them, using his bare hands of course, And combining packages with what was left. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and got mine home, only to find they were full of mold. And God for bid you need some thing from behind the counter. They really could not care less whether or not you are there. What a shame that a place as beautiful as Park slope, has no reliable place to purchase groceries outside of Amazon's Whole Foods. read more

I love coming to Union Market, they have an extensive variety of Specialty and organic food items. They have everything from a large Organic fruits and vegetables, a variety of imported cheeses, Olives, Grass Fed Meats, Fish etc. My favorite part about coming to Union Market is that they always allow you to sample their cheese and olives. They also have a nice variety of artisan breads, focaccias and fresh pastries... Love Love Love buying bread from Union Market. Union Market has a nice section of prepared hot foods and meals to go, sold by the pound, food items such as Rotisserie chicken, Grilled salmon, couscous, lentils, asparagus, and even hot soups to go are always available and always Fresh and high quality. I have purchased freshly prepared lunch & dinner to go often, best part is that you can choose from a variety options. They are a little more expensive than your regular supermarket, but I do find the food to be very fresh, and the best part is they have a large variety of whatever you are looking for. Specific to the 7th avenue location, I have recently noticed the string beans were bad, they trick you and put the good ones on top with expired ones on the bottom. Had to throw them away. I noticed that whenever I ask for 1lb of anything from the deli area, they go over on purpose i.e. $11.99 per pound and then $13.00+ actual. I noticed that their pre-made sandwiches (french bread with ham and cheese) are old, the bread is stale, lettuce wilts, and one piece of ham. Lastly, customer service is always mixed, I am either met with attitude even when I am friendly, or I'm ignored, or they are friendly. As a long-standing friendly customer, I will go elsewhere. read more

Gorgeous store! I walked in and immediately saw a beautiful display of stone fruits. I got some nectarines, which were perfectly ripe. The whole produce section was beautiful. And a really nice selection too. I saw some baby romanesco, and heirloom carrots, sold by color. Every time I go into a store like this 50$ magically rolls out of my pocket. I was able to control myself and only spend 20$. They had pecan butter, which I resisted the urge to spend 18$. The cheese section was nice. All these fun cheeses to try and not too expensive either. I got a nice wedge of 8 month raw milk manchego for 4$. It was the best manchego I've ever had. The layout of the store is awkward, very narrow aisles. I had to do a lot of dodging of strollers and obnoxious children. I will definitely be back. I need to get more of those nectarines and buy up more of their cheeses. read more

I'm generally satisfied with this market, as they offer things that you can't get at an average supermarket, though at the prices they charge, you can't make this your source for staples. However, I wanted to write about something else, something that I witnessed: I was standing on line on 6th Avenue to get into the store on Monday, June 17, at around 6:30 p.m. There were three or four people in line ahead of me, and there was a young guy, a store employee, who was regulating when the next shoppers on line could go in. He was standing there, facing the line, when a tall, bald middle-aged man with glasses walked behind him and went straight into the store. The store employee seemed oblivious to this. Maybe there was a backstory to this. Maybe the middle-aged man had waited on line, reached the front, and told the store employee that he had forgotten something in his car. Maybe the employee said something like, "Don't worry. Get what you need, and when you come back, you can go right in. I won't make you wait again." It could have happened that way. Or something like that. But most likely not. In my disgust, I walked away. I felt like a coward not saying anything, but I didn't know for a fact that that middle-aged man was cheating, although that was the likeliest scenario. Also, that guy slipped into the store pretty fast, and by the time I'd have gotten to the doorway, who knows where he would've been in the store. This was no mischievous kid who did this, but an older guy who should have known better. And that store employee should have been more observant. I'm sorry. This store so easily could be a better store but the manager is irritable and gets annoyed when I ask her (every time) where are the prices?? Today I had to ask her again (none of the store workers could help me) what the price on the bread was. She was very annoyed by this question and said, "Can't you see? The price is on the back of each bread. I pointed out 2 or 3 breads that had no price on them and she reluctantly went to the cash register to find out. I wouldn't complain about this, if it wasn't an ongoing issue. I think that they do this intentionally. There doesn't seem to be a reason either as to why she is so nasty when you ask her the price. I really love Union Market, and find that I simply cannot walk by without stopping in. Overall, their stuff is significantly more pricey than any of your chain grocery stores. That's to be expected though from any gourmet or specialty food market. They do have awesome sales every week, and while they usually only apply to 2-3 items, they are really really good. You have to search for the Special Offer signs around the store. The cheese selection is excellent, there are always samples, and always 1-2 cheeses on sale. Lastly, their eggs are really good and are cheaper than surrounding grocery stores. read more

I don't think I can go another day without writing a review for Park Slope's Union Market. My experience there today is fresh in my mind and mirrors nearly every experience I've had at Union Market: good food, rude workers. The food may leave a good taste in my mouth, but my interactions (or lack thereof) with the staff does anything but. I want to support Union Market, because they support local businesses and farmers such as Ronnybrook, Bread Alone, Red Jacket, Beth's Farm Kitchen, etc. When I do shop at Union Market, on a day like today, when I can't make it to the farmers' market, I try to make sure to only buy the local products. Union Market's prices are reasonable and the layout, while cramped, makes sense. My pleasant shopping experience has always come to an abrupt halt each time I interact with a Union Market staff member. The checkout staff is rude. They never address me or 'ask me if I found everything'. They ignore the customers, until the customer has to make the assumption that it's their turn to check out. Today, the two check out girls were talking and laughing with each other, while I stood in front of them for nearly a minute. I finally just unloaded my basket. The girl roughly handled my merchandise and shoved a receipt in my face. She didn't help me load my bag; she didn't exchange pleasantries. She didn't answer when I asked if the credit card machine was broken. It is a disheartening experience to go to a market that promises to be the next best thing to a farmers' market. While they certainly sell the best products, they are missing a key element that you will find with the farmers: kindness, attentiveness, and customer appreciation. When it comes to price consciousness, I am the first one to raise my hand and give my opinions. The descending customer however must distinguish between product availability, quality and price. Union market fails on many points to deliver decently priced goods, especially the fresh produce. However, it does also provide a very good selection of decently priced products. Select few comments, by no mean exhaustive: Cheeses: actually imported cheeses. Great selection, in the $10-13/pound range. To name a few Taleggio, Toma piemontese, Piave vecchio, many french cheese which in my ignorance i'll call 'soft cheeses'. Breads: freshly baked. Great tasting from pugliese to baguette. They are not overpriced. Dry goods starting with pasta. De Checco, actually made in italy and equivalently priced to (produce of US) Barilla or yet another nameless italian pasta that you'll find at Target, Traders and Costco....and you taste the difference. Locally grown stuff: Vermont Creamery, featured at the early feb Yelp event is stocked here. Meat counter (here comes the best of): I read other reviews, who clearly have not been at this counter. It is manned by actual butchers. I ask for Veal and Pork cuts to make pot roast, in my latest endevour to prepare home made agnolotti. He takes out the whole leg of veal from the back and cuts a chunk, effortlessly using three different knives. I ask for bones for stock and he proceeds to carve out the whole bone of the leg, perfectly cutting around it, perfectly skilled at his job. He cuts it in pieces, puts in all in a bag, labelled: 'No Charge'. I go home, not only I got veal bone, I get enough meat to make my roast from the bone and bone marrow too. So here I am, walking out with Veal Roast, Pork Roast, bones, cheeses and italian pasta from a local grocery store. Go with your eyes wide open and you will not be disappointed. I may as well make out with other customers or jump in someone's stroller and have them chauffeur me around. What the hell happened to this place? It used to be so friendly and well run. The once professional and courteous staff seem to have been replaced by untrained workers who either don't care, or don't know how to provide good service. Example: I bought several bottled beverages and they were clinking in the bag. I asked politely if they had cardboard or paper to separate the glass -- much like a wine store offers. The check out worker stared me in the eye with disgust and said, "You can get a magazine near the exit, rip out pages and stuff them between the bottles. Next ..." Seriously, this used to be a great market. With Whole Foods opening up nearby, I expected Union Market to up it's game. Sadly it's gone the other direction -- fast. read more

What's the deal? Trying to compete with Trader Joe's and Fairway? How about competitive prices and a positive attitude? I have had had so many bad experiences with the employees, which makes me think they undertrain, understaff, and ultimately, underpay the employees! The butcher obviously hates his job as does the baker and the cashiers. Union Market is basically a market that sells good cheese and olive oil, and is closer than the other two markets I mentioned. Fairway hires from the Projects, which is amazing. The employees may not eat the higher priced products, but they are nice, they are learning about better foods, and they're doing their best. Trader Joe's has an incredibly upbeat, well paid staff with great benefits who know their product, and it speaks for itself! Now, Union Market tries to look like Dean & Deluca, but I doubt they have ever had a training for the employees to try the cheeses, organic fruits, oils, meats, or fish, etc. I don't blame the employees, but I don't like the dirty looks or indifference I feel when I shop there. It's a last resort kind of market. The owners should step it up for the employees to be NICE to their customers. Again, you're my and many of my neighbor's last choice of market. read more

Yes, this place is expensive. A similar price point to Dean and Deluca or Whole Foods. However, if you want a good cut of beef, or some nice quality vegetables, go here. Everything else is superfluous, and would probably even be cheaper at Whole Foods (like eco-friendly house cleaners, stock pantry items, etc). This is the kind of place where you need to pick and choose. I usually go in to pick up some nice cheese, or some good apples, or a nice cut of steak...every once in a while. Sometimes the staff can have an attitude and seem preoccupied when asked for help. That's why this place doesn't get 5-stars. Even though I do the bulk of my shopping at the Food Coop up the street I always enjoy coming to this Union Market, they have what really is an incredible selection of foods from all over the world packed into a small space. The baked goods, cheese, olives, chocolate and produce are very well sorted. I also love how everything is presented in tidy rows, even the fruits and veggies... everything looks so appealing, you kinda just want to buy everything in the store! Often a new brand or quirky product will catch my eye and I'll end up taking something new home... Also they have a special deal right now - free coffee with purchase of any baked good, and there's a nice bench outside to sit while you munch. read more

So gross: This place has upscale products, yes, but they don't know the first thing about hygiene. I'm surprised the health inspector hasn't shut them down. I'm afraid to buy deli meat here after purchasing literally rancid deli meat here once. And prior to that, all their deli meats had been clearly very old and dry. AND every time my boyfriend and I come here we play "What Prepared Food Looks the Most Disgusting". There're always a decent selection of candidates. Deli meats are off the list of things I can purchase there. Now, I'm utilitarian enough that I won't begrudge an entire store for having one disgusting section. So I went back. The other day I came in here to buy bread, only to find that as soon as I picked up a loaf a small city of fruit flies flew off various items in the bakery section! I literally stood there for a minute looking at all the fruit flies in complete wonder and disgust. The image of fruit fly larvae in my break was so gross I left the store immediately!! Bakery goods: SO clearly off the list of things I can buy there. Still slightly hopeful for the...wrapped foods. I agree with everyone who says the morale is terrible. Not only that, the employees have no decency at all. I once went in there where an employee was just standing in front of the guac and chips sample table and eating his fill. Rude! read more

I'll be honest. I used to be a huge fan of Union Market's several years ago but the quality of the items has gone downhill fast. The produce routinely looks like it's been run over with a truck two times before it's put out. We have gotten mixed mesclun green salad boxes home on several occasions, only to discover that the lettuce at the bottom is completely rotten. The gentleman at the fish counter tried to give us some old, smelly tuna (my husband had to ask him, "now would you eat that?"). My husband has even tried to address his concerns with management. He tried e-mailing. He tried calling (and left a message with a staff member), but no ever called or e-mailed him back. This used to be our main grocery store because it was just a few blocks from our home. We were so frustrated by the decline in quality and their inability to manage their inventory properly (they always seem to be out of the things you need), we started to shop at Fairway in Red Hook instead. read more

I wandered into this market on a rainy weekday afternoon, partly to shield myself from the thunderstorms outside. Partly to scope out some ideas for dinner. Upon picking up some guac and and tortilla chips, I happened upon the meat counter, full of fresh rack of lambs, chops and other beefy cuts of, er, beef. "Can I help you, dear?," yells the man from behind the counter. I tell him I'm just browsing. Seeing my hesitation, he asked if I was searching for dinner ideas. I nodded. "Feel like cooking?" Not really. The man proceeds to tell me about these fresh roasted rotisserie chickens that just came out of the oven ten minutes ago. Offers up one, throws out some ideas of sides (broccoli rabe, potatoes). Mentions to get "maybe a larger one" so I can have some leftovers for lunch. It sounded like a good idea. "Dinner for how many? Two? You get the chicken and HE can do the dishes!" noticing my receptiveness to his suggestions. In fact, it now sounded like a great idea. In the end I walked out with a juicy lemon herb marinated bird, some chips and guac. (I had veg at home). The bill totaled just a bit over $20. Was it cheap? I'm sure there's cheaper. But the guac was fresh, and the bird was tasty. And the man behind the counter left a friendly impression on me that should I ever be in that part of town, and am looking for dinner ideas, I'd be sure to head over and ask him for some suggestions. read more

Union Market has an amazing assortment of food/produce, best oatmeal in the morning and great selection of certain products; however, sadly, the staff is the most unprofessional I have ever dealt with in the neighborhood. The salespeople, cash register staff are repeatedly rude, talk as they 'help' customers, at times openly obnoxious.. I stopped going to UM only for that reason, even high prices were less of an issue. Mostly staff. Thats sad, miss the good chocolate and peach pies. A gourmet place, of course expensive but I would suggest to buy food which is really worthed like meat or fish or in any case "special" food. If not necessary I would avoid regular sugar and things like that. Scallops were fantastic as well as the ribeye and the salmon. Excellent selection of olives ans cheeses. Prior to Union Market, living in Park Slope meant you had to hop from store to store the old fashioned way - if, that is, you're really into cooking and prefer to buy quality ingredients not otherwise found at C-town. With the Union Market, there's a more convenient way to buy quality ingredients. Good coffee beans for 6.99 a pound, excellent bread from the city's best bakeries, good vinegars/oils, nice selection of cheese and olives, and a reasonable fish/meat counter with very nice guys who will get you what you need if you ask nicely(and insist). Of course, not everyone is willing to pay $4 for a few pounds of King Arthur flour, and I'm certainly not paying $3.49 for a can of San Marzanos, but this does not diminish Union Market's other good qualities. Union Market has not replaced cool stores like Blue Apron, or the Pork Store - and you'll still have to do some store hopping, but it has certainly filled a much needed 'gourmet' niche in the neighborhood. read more
