Was in the neighborhood looking for scallops for dinner, and stumbled upon Demu as a place I've never been to before. The reviews looked fine. There weren't many, so I figured that maybe Demu was a new place. I walked in, and there was no ice or fish on display. When I asked the owner (Demu) he said he was just restocking, but the fish was in the back, which was fine. After asking for a pound of scallops, he grabbed a kind of dirty looking bucket from under the table, went into the back, and it sounded like he washed the scallops which was very odd. He came back and began weighing them, and something began to smell. I wasn't close enough to the scallops, so I couldn't tell at the time, but he wrapped them up, I paid, and I walked out. After walking out, I opened my bag to look at them because I was suspicious, and they smelled HORRIBLE, like noticeably very bad. The same smell as in the store, but 20x worse. I don't know how he didn't smell that when selling them to me, or if he did, it was complete neglect. The worst part was that the place was cash only, and a "no refund" sign was clearly hanging on the wall, so I just took the hit and tossed the scallops in the garbage down the street. After looking back, there were a lot of odd signs, and who knows, maybe I caught them on a bad day, but no fresh fish/meat seller should ever sell someone something that can make them extremely sick or worse. Again, the smell was absolutely horrible. If you are looking to buy here, make sure to check your stuff before you pay. read more
