Donkey Roll
Cindy C.

Ambiance - Small and feels crowded. It is one of those shared stall - multiple food. Sheng Jin kept it's limited space clean and tidy. Service - I went around 3pm ish- they were getting to closed the shop, so they only had limited food. The lady sounds rude, but sturdy - guess she was getting ready to go home. Their food are mainly breakfast, grab and go type - I am sure the morning time, will be super busy! Food - The Menu on the wall was only in Chinese, no pictures to order - the local / regular will know what to order with their eyes closed. Thankfulness to Yelp and ppl's pictures, showed the lady the donkey roll pictur, which was why I went there for - so I was pretty happy they i got my hands on. I got the donkey Roll and an egg pancake, total of $5.50. The egg pancake was cold, since it's been out for long hours - will try it again next time when I am there for breakfast. The Donkey Roll was pretty good. It is soft and not sweet at all - but it is very filling after eating the 2 pieces, after all it is filled with red bean.

I've been exploring Flushing specifically searching for a northern Chinese dessert called rolling donkey, which is a soft mochi-like rice cake roll with a red bean paste filling. The name comes from the soybean flour that is dusted atop the dessert, which resembles a donkey rolling in the sand. I had a particularly delicious version at Juqi, and wanted to look for a street food friendly option. My friend recommended Sheng Jin, which was incredibly tricky to find. All I can say is look for the yellow awning and walk all the way inside the cramped little mall to the back where you will find Sheng Jin. Their rolling donkeys are all packaged neatly at the counter and they are comically huge. They sell for $8 for 4, and will comfortably feed 2-3 per slice. Great bang for your buck, but I thought the hefty size of each slice, coupled with the chunky red bean paste made for an incredibly rustic version of a rolling donkey. Overall, not my favorite version, but if you like large portions and texture, this would be a great choice! I'll also add that there are a lot of other snacks available at the stall, though I did not get a chance to try anything else. There is limited seating available inside but everything is quite cramped.

One of the only spots that serves dofunao ("tofu brains", savory tofu soup)!! I feel like I tried to come here 10 years ago but couldn't find the shop, now 10 years later I was finally able to satisfy my tofu cravings. The main menu is Chinese but there is also a menu in English with pictures on the side with their main items. Between two people we got 1 small tofu soup (dou fu nao), 1 small soy milk (dou jiang), 1 fried dough (you tiao), 2 pork buns (zhu rou bao), 1 scallion pancake roll (jian bing guo zi) and 1 donkey roll to go (lu da gun). It came out to be ~$17. Honestly the only actual good thing was probably the tofu soup and the donkey roll. They add sesame paste to the soup which I've never had before, it was interesting! They didn't add cilantro by default so I should have asked. The pork buns, scallion pancake roll, and fried dough stick were simple and homey, but nothing special. I wish the fried dough stick was fresh but they were just sitting out on the side. The scallion pancake roll is made fresh, it's basically a crepe with egg and either fried dough stick or a crispy cracker thing in the middle. The pancake is $7 here which is quite pricey! (Maybe because of the eggflation ?). The donkey roll I ate at home - I'm a sucker for mochi so this was right up my alley. Apparently this is a popular Beijing dessert but I've honestly never had this in China at least. They also had shao bing which is another classic breakfast bread, but I didn't try it this time. It shares a space with other small restaurants with some seating but it gets busy. There is also a restroom. I love that it was affordable and reminded me of my childhood, but I'm not sure I'd go back. Maybe next time I have the craving or want to purchase shao bing to go!

Doufunao, Guobacai

My favorite Tianjin food in the city! My dad is from here and it tastes exactly like it does in China. I always get the doufunao, guobacai, and jianbing guozi, which I crave every two weeks since I grew up coming here. However, it is a very small stall at the back of a narrow alley and I would be prepared to speak Chinese and bring cash. Everything is super cheap and affordable in addition to being incredibly delicious!

The food is so great in Shengjin. The Tianjin Tofu jelly is the most authentic local food ever seen

Egg and Scallion Pancake

I found myself in Flushing craving scallion pancake breakfast. Having no idea where to go, I yelped and found Sheng Jin. Good thing yelp had a pic of the storefront and "stall", because I would have never have found this place. Being that I don't speak a lick of Mandarin or read Chinese, I got really lucky that they just brought out a fresh batch of scallion and egg pancakes. I pointed and handed over a $10 bill and was handed back $8.50. What a bargain for such a uniquely tasty experience! The scallion pancake was steamy and fresh with a good amount of chew and flakiness - just perfect! I couldn't help but smile, as I sat on a folding chair, at a folding table with strangers knowing that this was my first time here. I got back in line to try this "donkey roll" that everyone on yelp seems to like and I wasn't disappointed. It was a unique combination of flavors - slightly sweet red bean paste, rolled/wrapped with thin mochi paper, dusted with a toasty powder. I've never had this dessert before, but I would do it again. I really enjoyed the chewy texture and the "not so" (if you're Chinese, you'll understand) sweetness. Overall, it was a great "no frills" tasty experience. Take it to-go, if you're not into the fast (really) casual communal dining. I'll come back for a quick breakfast the next time I'm in Flushing.

my last day in nyc and my flight was at 7am the next morning but my friends were like let's do last weekly dinner minus one and yet we went far. bro i feel so humbled cuz why did i go with people who know chinese and I DONT. ugh i hate myself. because i kept asking them to translate and i genuinely felt so stupid. but anyways i had this place saved for the rolling donkey and then we found the place and they only had one left. it was $8 for 4 pieces which is lowkey a scam given we are in flushing but whatever. i bought it and my friend mingled with the owners. and then we left and ate other food in flushing! but on the subway ride back i ate it. and it was okay. it had the injeolmi powder on it and i think red bean inside? anyways it was fine. but not awesome amazing i would get it again. but i'm happy i got to try it at least once! 3.5 stars!

This spot was insanely outside of our comfort zone & a wild card in our Flushing foodie ventures. We came here bc of a foodie vlogger's recommendation.. and boy were we in for an experience! The place itself is located at the very back of a narrow space with restaurants alongside the left and minimal community tables (found this out when a random gentlemen pulled up to our table and started feasting..) on the right. The workers didn't speak English, so I pulled out yelp pictures to order. They were extremely kind despite our language barrier, which we greatly appreciated! We can't fairly comment on the food, as it was just another realm of chinese cuisine that we've never had. Though, I can say it was not our preference in chinese foods. We ordered rolling donkey (was most excited for this bc love red bean & mochi, red bean flavor was subtle & mochi soft), tea eggs (eggs were overcooked & dry), jian bing (chinese crepe wrapped in donut- a little bland & dry) , doufu nao (tofu 'brains'- slimy, gooey texture w wood ear mushrooms & silky tofu), and soy milk (did not taste like regular asian soy milk from grocery store, we only had a few sips bc flavor was a little off putting). There were many elderly asian customers that seemed to be regulars and enjoyed the food, so can safely assume this cuisine is familiar & comforting to many. Indeed was an unforgettable, unique experience!

Got the rolling donkey since they are known for this. I really loved it with more red bean and less mochi! It cost $2 for each, worth it!! Will come again to try the other food and get one whole box of the rolling donkey

Chinese crepe - 煎饼馃子
Tom P.

To all my non-Chinese speaking homies out there - don't be afraid to check this place out despite the lack of English signage! Find it by my outside picture and then walk to the back past the fish balls place. I was following a recommendation for trying a "Chinese crepe" and "tofu brains" (doesn't actually have brains - just called that because it looks like it). These are both, from what I understand, classic northern Chinese breakfast street food items. The pro tip, I heard, was to dunk your crepe into your brains. And I can confirm that that was a great call. Especially because the doughy stuff in the crepe was kind of dry (not in a bad way, just in need of sauce) - it was basically fried dough sticks. They also just complement each other separately. I looked up the names of these foods in Mandarin to show the person at the counter and that worked out well. Here they are for your reference - Chinese crepe - 煎饼馃子 Tofu brains - 豆腐脑 The only question I was faced with aside from tofu brains size (I went with small) was how spicy - and I said "very." I'm not sure if she toned it down for me or if it just wasn't very spicy, but I didn't find it to be particularly intense. Although I do have a fairly high tolerance, so your mileage may very. But I think anyone who likes spicy would have no problem with the "very" spicy I received, at least. I will admit this is the first time I've had these foods, so I'm not, obviously, as good of a reference point as those more experienced in these reviews, but hey - maybe there's value to saying that to a foreign palate, it was great! The place is definitely a little grungy, but no problem, it's still fun. There are seats, but I took my food and brought it to the nearby James Bland playground / park, where there were some tables for eating and it was a nice break from the hubbub. Glad I did. Also found the woman working the counter to be super nice - it was very busy and she was still happy to go through the language shuffle with me. Also a great deal - it was $8 for both of these together. This was a small tofu brains -- as in, they also had a large -- and it was plenty big. I only ate half, especially considering the gigantic crepe and that I had plans for further consumption throughout Flushing. The deli container they used was absolutely leakproof so that worked out super well.

Cuisine: 6 Service: 7…read moreDecor: 4 Value: 7 I have not been here in a long time. Maybe because the prices are no longer considered cheap eats. Or maybe because my taste buds have evolved over the years. Or maybe it's just not as good as it used to be. The answer is maybe all three and somewhere in the middle. I have never came here, or any other Latino-Chinese restaurants in NYC, for service or decor, so let's set that aside. The value is still somewhat there, but the food did not hit that nostalgic note I was looking for. I wanted to get the Fried Pork Chops (Chuletas De Cerdo Frita), but our server suggested the "juicier" Broiled Pork Chops (Chuletas De Credo Asada) instead. Sorry to report, if that's juicy, then how dry is the fried pork chops? I shutter at the thought. It was also under seasoned. I substituted the House Fried Rice for my side at an $4.50 additional fee. It was just okay and not worth the upgrade. Boneless Crispy Fried Chicken (Chicharron De Pollo) was also a disappointment. The batter was more hard than crispy, but the idea that boneless dark meat isn't more juicy simply tells me that the chef over fried the pieces. It came with Fried sweet plantains, which could have been a but more ripe but not bad. I'm not sure how I feel about the Beef Stew (Carne Guisada), which had relatively tender meat, but the sauce was so weak and lacked any real flavor. The black beans and white rice that came with it was decent. What might bring me back to this restaurant sooner rather than later was the Shrimp Egg Foo Young (foo Young Con Camarones). I felt that the eggs were cooked extremely well, but the star of the show was that delicious brown sauce full of umami. Having this over white or fried rice made this meal much more acceptable. I'm not sure when I'll have another craving for this type of food. If I do, I'll definitely get the egg foo young again. However, the other dishes were misses for me, so maybe I'll try the Fried Pork Chops and Shredded Beef in Tomato SayceRopa Vieja.

It's amazing to step into this restaurant, it's like stepping into another world where anything is possible. I feel like home whenever I come here. I ordered the cured pork with garlic shoots and dry fried green beans. The cured pork was quite salty, and paired well with the buttery, tender leeks it was cooked with. The dish was not overly oily, and was pleasant over white rice. I enjoyed the chewiness of the pork which allowed you to experience the complex flavor. The green beans were well fried, with characteristic texture signature to this dish. The seasoning was very well balanced and not overpowering to the natural sweetness of the green beans. I would recommend either dish. They were both slightly toned down iterations when compared to the times I've eaten these dishes at other Sichuan restaurants in flushing, but still well seasoned and well cooked. The service was very warm and friendly, and many other customers seemed to be returning regulars.

Warning to all with a pineapple allergy like me: do not eat the duck sauce. If you like spicy ask for hot mustard instead. Orange chicken was crispy and flavorful. I did not find it spicy, but my spice tolerance is very high. My fiance had the chicken with broccoli and it looked amazing. Try the cold noodles. They are chewy and delicious. For me the fried dumplings were good, but not great. Worth a try but nothing to rave over.
