Cozy Chinese Grub! With Soy Milk to Boot! This eatery specializes in a variety of 'shao bing', meaning griddle cooked roast cake -- think Chinese pitabreads, tortillas, naans. It offers day-to-day flour-based staples indicative of Northern China. There are delicious steamed cabbage buns, leek filled breads, rice-flour red-bean rolls (named 'the rolling donkey'), corn-meal griddle cakes, a variety of dumplings, leek stuffed breads, and even savory hot and spicy 'tofu flower' soup (a sort of silken tofu that must be eaten with a spoon because of its high moisture content). Try the sesame crusted roast bread, the scallion roast bread (they're cooked as large flat rounds, sold by the slice)....and just about anything that looks warm. I came here to try their jian bing and rolling donkey. The rolling donkey seemed to be red bean rolled in a material like mochi, and it was delicious! I really enjoyed it. The jian bing was just okay; the Chinese donut wasn't crunchy or anything, and the entire meal wasn't hot. I wasn't a super big fan of it and actually was pretty disappointed by it. The rolling donkey though is definitely worth a try; I've never seen that anywhere else in my life before. Both items together was $4.75 including tax which was super cheap! Not sure whether to bump this up to 4 stars - 3 stars for the jian bing and 4 stars for the rolling donkey. Place is quite small and cramped and it's not super clean though, so I'll probably leave it at 3 stars. read more

Enter the dark door into a narrow hall full of steam and dirty tables to find a worthwhile Chinese breakfast at Sheng Jin. I first went here approximately 2 years ago with a Fujianese friend, but only found the time to return recently. I think few expats return from China and miss breakfast time. Chinese lunches and dinners will always have a draw on me, but my memories of Chinese breakfast are mostly along the lines of "why am I eating dinner at 7 am?" or "mantou and congee again..." Sheng Jin makes me remember the better parts, like the youtiao (油条) eaten while squatting outside the bus station and the Shandong da bing (山东大饼). Unfortunately, Sheng Jin doesn't totally live up to my memories, but that is perhaps an impossible task. I've gone to Sheng Jin a few times in the past few weeks. The Youtiao, while good, are not the best I've had. The jian bing guozi (煎饼果子) is a better bet. I'm not really sure how that translates, but it is a bing (pancake/omelette) with a youtiao (cruller) wrapped inside of it with a sauce (hoisin?). Also on the list of things you ought to eat is the rolling donkey lv da gun（驴打滚), more of a dessert than a breakfast. Place is not all that clean and getting a table is hard. I would recommend getting it all to go and walking to a park to enjoy your oily breakfast. Eat the youtiao hot, but don't let the rolling donkey hot. They melt (trust me on this). read more

Tianjin flavor 天津味 street foods can be found here. Damn it is good and price is reasonable. For my fellow Americans who are geographically challenged, Beijing and Tianjin are close to each other like around 75 miles, 40 minutes on high speed rail is all it takes. Food is very similar, wheat flour is main staple, and yeah Beijing and Tianjin can get damn cold in winter. If you watch food ranger, then coming here is like "going deep with street food scene". No fancy thrill here, it's honest food with awesome taste. Give it a try my fellow Americans. read more

This place is so overrated. I read online that they have the most authentic 煎饼果子in ny, so I tried one. It didn't look delicious at all, and it doesn't taste good. I don't know why ppl say it's authentic and delicious online.... very disappointed, and as someone else mentioned in their review, the hygiene condition is really below standard, way below read more

I found this place is overrated, my visit was disappointing. The taste of the food can't make up for the poor hygiene conditions. We tried the recommended items such as Chinese fried dough, soy milk pudding, chive stuffed pancakes and lv da gun. "Lu da gun" is probably my favorite since you can't find it anywhere else in NYC, the other items were just meh.... read more

hands down my personal fav restaurant in the USA. nowhere else do they make my hometown food items they have here.. deep breath, here's what I order when I come here: 1. jinbing guozi (egg omelette wrap with spices inside as well as a fried dough, sometimes I ask for it w/o the fried dough - the way I've always liked it in China) 2. tofu nao - tofu soup meant for breakfast. with a million flavors, also a little spicy. 3. dumplings 4. buns Mostly I'm just wildly crazy about #1 and 2. I think and dream of these items all the time, and can't wait to have them when I go to NY. I'd travel 4 hours on bus + 1 hour on subway to get there just to have these items. God bless you for existing! read more

This place is AMAZING for someone who gets homesick for authentic northern Chinese breakfast food. Flushing is truly an incredible place, I'm so happy I found this place and tried it, even more pleased with the fact that the food is SO GOOD. We had the jian bing (they do tianjin style here), tofu soup, and chive pancake. The jian bing was very good and I like the batter mix they use for the crepe, not sure what's different about it but it has a unique taste to it (in a good way). Full disclosure that I'm partial to Beijing style jian bing with the fried crisp, and this place does Tianjin style, with fried dough stick. For carb lovers, this is a great choice! My friend loved this style of jian bing, so that just comes down to personal preference. But the star of the show...the tofu soup. Oh my god. First off, it's damn near impossible to find a place that does this very popular, very common Chinese breakfast dish from the north. But this place has it, and it is SO. GOOD. This soup made me want to call my grandparents, that's how nostalgic it was. Magic. Chinese cooking magic. I want to come back and just get s large bowl of this and a fried dough stick. What a perfect start to the day. Best of all, of course, the price is incredible. Especially given how good the food is and how hard it is to find some of the items they offer, it is insanely cheap to get a meal here. I have only been once but it was love at first bite. I hope it stays open forever. read more

This place is serving the authentic Northern Chinese food, mainly for breakfast and take-out. Their most impressive food to me is the scallion pancake. The size is like a pizza pie, thick and very tasty. We always ordered the whole pie, cut into 8 slices, then warmed them up with microwave as our breakfast each day. In the good old days, they only charged $4 for the whole pie. As they increased the pricing while the food quality was going down, now we order this food less frequently. Their sesame pancakes and egg/chive pancakes are also good. As for their Jian Bing (Guo Zi), which is a popular street food in Northern China, I don't agree with some reviewers opinion that the Jian Bing made here is authentic. This place may be the first restaurant serving Jian Bing in Flushing, if not in the whole NYC, so I ordered it many times before. I believe the dough recipe and sauce(s) they use are not right. Now I have better places to go for Jian Bing in Flushing, and don't have to order from here anymore. The dinning area is small and shared with another business, you would see majority dine-in customers take their food. Always long line in front of the reception desk, but moves quick. read more

Love the breakfast here, so authentic, makes me miss home. Try the rolling donkey it is the best treat in the world. It is so good that I miss it every single day. I also had the soy curd, it wasn't as good as the donkey but I think it's because the donkey is too highly rated in my brain so everything else just tastes plain. They do have some other good food but I didn't have a chance to try them all though. Jianbingguozi（煎饼果子）, Zhagao（炸糕）, Guobacai（锅巴菜）, different kinds of Baozi（包子）, Xiaomizhou（小米粥）are all good choices. read more

Amazing. I come to Flushing just to get the food here (even after breakfast time). I usually get their sesame pancakes (芝麻烧饼), red bean buns (豆沙烧饼), Jian Bing (煎饼), and the rolling donkey (驴打滚). Also, their Zha Gao (炸糕) is very good. It's not usually available early in the morning but it's available later in the day. It's very crispy and not too sweet. I can eat three of those a day. Their Dou Fu Nao (豆腐脑) is great also, and the portions are huge. Very authentic TianJin food. read more

After looking for a place to buy Jian Bing I finally found it. While the food was good, the line was insanely long and unfortunately instead of the good crunchy noodle in the middle like they give you in the Jian Bing in China, here they give you a You Tiao (fried dough). While it's not bad, it's not as good as others I've had. But at least I finally found one in NY. Definitely will go back. But keep in mind their english is NOT good. read more

How anyone can rate this low is beyond me. You pay $1.50 and get a bowl of delicious Ga Ba Cai (that is a soup thats like... soury.... and thick... with sesame paste, some red stuff that tastes good, etc and has strips of green bean crepe sliced into it.) and you pay $1 (or 1.50) to get a YouTiao (its a "fried dough" but its really light and airy, dip it in your soup!) the size of your arm! If you're a visitor and don't know what to order here they have the following delicious items. Small bowl of "Ga ba Cai" (gah bah Sigh) which is the soup described above Small bowl of "Lao doufu" (Lao tofu.) which is a delicious aged-tasting tofu soup You Tiao (Yo Tyow) which is a delicious dough stick the size of your arm. Dip it in your soup or dip in your soymilk for a sweeter vibe. The "donkey roll" which I have no idea the name of in Chinese because I don't speak much, is also super delicious. Don't be put off, I got a bowl of soup, a fried dough stick, and a donkey roll for less than $5. You can't get that deal anywhere else for breakfast. Skip the buffet, come here, enjoy the tastes of Tianjin. read more

Food is only Okay, i am surprised this place got an A from health department. It's quite messy inside. The garbage bean was full and things were falling out. Service was horrible. They probably don't have million dollars but they sure have the attitude as if i owe them that much. Never going back. They wouldn't care any way, if they did they wouldn't be so impatient even rude to all the customers, right? It's new york, i am not the customer they depend on to make money, they are not the only place serve breakfast. Goodbye for good. read more

I walked by this place many times and didn't even know it exists. This is truly a hole in the wall eatery. I was their last customer as they wrapping up. All sold out of lamb soup but got a rolling donkey to try out. It is very soft and the red beans mixture just right. I do wish it was wrap in saran wrap beside just dump into a takeout plastic bag. Also with so many new eatery popping up, it could use some cleanup or update on the sitting area. However, next time will try other items as many yelpers suggested. read more

The worst experience. The lady boss inside this store is the worst ever! Not just about her attitude to customers, but also her attitude to her employees! I have witness the worst boss ever in NYC! Best breakfast place in Flushing. Period. Forget your dim sum and go here. Check out other reviews for what's good...but this place is bomb.

I discovered this little gem one day and this place is my go to breakfast place when I'm in a rush to go to school! The food is cheap and authentic! I really enjoy their chive pancake, 煎饼果子, pork buns, and their rolling donkey! I'm a ABC and I love that I get to explore Northern Chinese food in NY!! Their chive pancake is the best I've tried in Flushing and their 煎饼果子 is made fresh right after you order! High recommend! There can be a long line in the morning when you come but the line will move quickly! read more

This place has great Northern Chinese food! They have great fish ball soup, vinegar peanut butter noodle, and pancakes.

Every time we come to flushing, we always come to buy scallion pancake, the big one, $4 each, we order at least two, bring home , put in freezer, toast it when we eat it, so good. Their fish in the box, smoked chick is very good too. read more

I ordered the Dofu Nao and the Jian Bing Guo Zi. The Jian Bing was gigantic and the the Dofu was a messy swirl of black and brown slop. By the looks of the food, my hopes were not high. However, they both tasted pretty good. Especially the Dofu's savory and peanutty goodness. The place looks dingy though, and makes me worry about how sanitary the food is. read more

Dang I was so excited to try this place after craving the jianbing I used to always have in China when I studied abroad.. But I was sadly disappointed~ the amount of food for $3 is really good but I didn't even wanna finish half of it because it just didn't have much flavor and the fried dough was just really thick and hard for me to keep eating... I had such high hopes! Maybe it was an off day but I don't think I wanna try it again. read more

Delicious food here. I got 发面的葱油饼( scallion pancake), it's a thick version but so delicious. The 蒜肠(garlic sausage) is sooooo good, i will buy 2 pounds of it next time. Being from Beijing, I was super stoked to find out there were places in the States that actually sold jianbing guozi so I had to try this place out. I was in town for a day and staying at the Sheraton on 53rd street so it wasn't exactly convenient to get food in Flushing but considering the only place I've had this dish was in China, I thought it would've been worth it. I don't know if there's any point to get into the atmosphere, it's Flushing - so the place was grungy and there's short old ladies trying to cut in front of you - that's to be expected so I'm not dinging them for that. Also, make sure you're with someone who speaks Chinese or are a master of non-verbal communication, otherwise you may be there a while longer than you want. But to the actual dish? Highly mediocre. Whenever I've had it in the past, it's always been made to order - piping hot. I showed up around noon and there was decent number of people there already so I was expecting the food to be somewhat fresh but it was barely warm. They could've at least put it in the toaster oven for a few minutes. read more

The best 煎饼果子 I can find in the NYC area, although the place isn't as clean as you'd hope.
