Nope, I've traveled for work my whole adult life of over 25 years, visited more pubs good and bad then the barmaid is years old and rarely felt a need for a less then good review, kinda felt bs'd by a gaming pub that obviously doesn't know shite. I travel a lot, for work and I'm usually alone. So I tend to wander in places that I think I'm going to have a good time and depending on my mood either find people to talk to you or be left alone. This is definitely somewhere you want to wander into you if you want people to talk to you. From the staff to the patrons everyone is extremely friendly several times I was asked to join different groups of people who were doing shots. There must be a music venue nearby as people started piling in later on at night all talking about a show they had seen. Even has the crowds got bigger the service didn't waver. My husband and I go here on our kid free nights, which can be like, once a month, but when we walk in the door the bartender still pulls out two High Lifes and is happy to see us! This place is rough. I mean, rode hard and put away wet, rough. It sports an Irish name, but it's about as Irish as the bar in "Always Sunny in Philidelphia." Beer bottles are stored in massive vats of ice, so most of the labels end up coming off. If the bartender isn't paying much attention, they could grab a completely wrong beer. It clearly attracts solely locals and they--seemingly--don't have any intention of attracting the tourist crowd. So, if you're new in town, it may take some time before you feel comfortable there. With only 24 hours in Reno, what's a girl to do in the late afternoon in a foreign city? I plopped myself down on a barstool here and don't think I moved for 5 hours. It was amazing. I really loved the Friday daytime crowd better that the Friday night crowd (I guess that's usually the case for me). The drinks weren't cheap, but they were decent. The bartenders were cool. Riley was especially cute and friendly. Jukebox could use some work, but maybe I'm just picky. If I ever find myself in Reno again, I will have to get drunk here again! I was determined to go out last night but I wasn't interested in going to the college bars or casinos. So I drove around until I found something. I happened past Shea's Tavern and it's exactly what I was looking for. It's a small bar, but all of the people were friendly. Even though I had gone alone I found myself talking to people all night. It's dive-y and definitely a locals bar. This is not a bar that serves food. The most food they have is popcorn. But the drinks are priced fantastically. Shea's is a family owned small bar where a lot of locals hang out but everyone is welcome. The bartender keeps the place running smooth and keeps everyone happy. The dance floor is real small and a pool table takes up part of it. Everyone should feel safe and not hassled at Shea's Tavern. When a local invited himself to sit at a table of ladies without being asked. The bartender politely asked the local to return to the bar. This did not go well with the local but he was told to respect the ladies right to not be hassled. An extra "star" for that act which was not easy. Reno's favorite, well used to be at least, shithole dive bar. Proprietors Jerry and Michelle Shea have managed to grind through at least 15 bartenders since i've been going here, so you can tell what a great clientele and repeat business they have...not. Bartender Crystal is pretty cool, considering how much her hands are tied by the owners , and the Shea's daughters, Nicki and Lacy are pretty good, they're allowed to get crazy. One of the best wells in town too, surprisingly. They make sure to offset it with a weak drink, unless you're one of their regulars. Enough about them, onto the bar itself. Long wooden bar with video poker machines, pool table in the back, comfy booths to kick back and drink pitchers in, gay-ass internet juke box (like I said, USED to be cool- they had a rad juke box before) ,and an electronic dart game- thing. Strong comfortable stools that can withstand repeated throwing and knocking over - A fact I can personally vouch for. Green beer stained, cigarette- burned carpet along with faux brick walls make for a comfortable atmosphere than you can chill in. Unless the drunken idiot next to you tries to hit on your ol' lady and you have to administer a beat down. Which happens every now and then. There's been some memorable fights go down here, but now that nobody really goes here anymore, not too much of anything goes on. More a sausage fest than poon party most times, but still gets hoppin' every now and then on the weekend nights. So the first couple of times I ended up at Shea's was in the middle of the afternoon, midweek. Rando. Years ago I went in and they didn't have Guinness on tap, which seemed ludicrous considering this is supposed to be an Irish pub (there's a clover on their sign, so c'mon). Happy to report this oversight has been fixed and now Guinness flows in abundance. Went back for an evening here a few weeks ago. The initial crowd was older, the typical Reno barflies were hovering around. On first broach it seemed like a biker bar, but then around 10 pm something happened and very attractive young people started arriving. It was an interesting shift from neighborhood dive bar to hipster joint. Drinks: there's 2 for $12 car bombs and other such specials. Ketel One and tonic costs $6, which is in the acceptable range for me. Pool table and darts and all the staples of a pub towards the back of the bar. It can get smokey as all get out and sometimes the music runs a little Metallica-heavy. Bartenders were the owner's daughter and owner's son's girlfriend when I went and they were both super friendly. The owner's son (who I guess is the acting manager) kind of looks like Christian Bale if it's dark enough, you've had too much to drink, and you're squinting with one eye closed. Good enough for me. This is the kind of place where I would not be embarrassed if I puked in their bathroom. And sometimes that's just the kind of place I am looking for. read more

Came here with my family to celebrate two of our group members' birthday and it was the worst mistake ever. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with dirty looks and bad energy. We sat down at the bar and some were playing on the machines, we spent at least $300+ on the machines. The whole time we were there the bartender Kelly was rude and in a bad mood, seemed like she didn't want us there. Paid most attention to the other side of the bar and when our drinks were empty would just look at them and not ask if we wanted more. Seemed like everyone there new each other and were probably regulars so thats why they looked at us crazy the whole time wanting us to leave. We put money into the jukebox to play some music and we picked a song to play then the bartender switched over the music to her phone on purpose and turned off the jukebox that we still had money on. We told them can we get our money back and they looked at us like they could care less and said they couldn't do anything. Whole time we were there everyone including the bartenders were doing coke and who knows what else. Our group got asked for coke and cigarettes multiple times. Everyone there was a weirdo tweaker, and basically you can't go there unless you do coke and are a white supremacist. read more

Now my review will be skewed because I am not a drinker and don't usually go out to bars. But Shea's has always been kind to locals, and has really dug in its heels amongst the gentrification and hipsterization of Midtown. They serve them cold and quick with friendly service. They are most known among my friends as a great place to catch some fantastic bands, my boyfriend's band being a regular player there. The dance floor area is blocked off by a large pool table and the place has a modern electric jukebox and a snack/smokes machine. Let me start by saying this is a dive bar with very interesting lively patrons. As long as you know what you're getting yourself into, you'll be fine. Smoking is allowed inside and is pretty heavy so if you don't like cigarette smoke, it's probably not the place for you. Bartenders were friendly and drinks were cheap, but weak. I'm not from Reno, but I go there often. Shea's is absolutely perfect if you're into the dive bar scene. I had been looking for a good place downtown-ish to get cheap drinks with a good vibe and this place is by far the best. Punk rock and not douchey, plus they have a stage and promote local bands. I'd almost rather say don't go here, because it seems to be a good spot for actual locals and not tourists. I am a fan of Shea's! Okay, so it might not be the best place to take a first date... but it's a heck of a fun time for people who are just looking to have a fun night out with friends, or maybe you're in an established relationship and you just want to have a good carefree time! First off, everyone who works here is extremely friendly. The second you walk in the door, regardless of what you are wearing or what you look like, you are greeted with a warm welcome. They are always upbeat, willing to strike up a conversation and overall a load of fun. There is always a wide variety of people in here and everyone is mixing and having a heck of a time. Secondly, the bar tabs are cheap! Every-time we have ever gone they have a few specials going and we can get a good buzz going for a group of us with $20-40. There's nothing better than that, a lot of bars in town charge you $10 a drink and you end up blowing all of your money in one spot just on yourself. Thirdly, the atmosphere is always positive! They usually have some fun classics playing, there are people playing pool, groups that don't know each-other are interacting and having a good time... it's just a very relaxed place. The last time we were here we had people holding the door, inviting us to play pool and even paying to bum a cigarette. You aren't going to find groups of snobby people sitting in booths giving dirty looks to those around them, you're going to find a lot of people who are out to have a good time and meet new friends! read more
