Shanghai House has been on my to-try list for quite some time, as Chinese restaurants on Eastside are usually pretty solid - I grew up eating Shanghai food, so I was excited to stop by and see how it is done in the greater Bellevue area. We went on a Wednesday around 6:30pm and had no wait to get seated. The restaurant has parking that is shared with many other vendors along a line, and I can definitely foresee parking becoming a issue during busy hours as there aren't a ton of parking spots - just to note during peak business hours. We were the only diners during our visit, so service was focused entire on us - I personally felt that the service could have been better as the waitress made us feel a bit rushed when ordering. The ambiance is casual dine in, with Chinese inspired decor. The lighting was a little bit off as it was pretty dim with a fluorescent color - unfortunately felt a bit like they were at closing time with the ambiance vibes. We ordered three dishes, which I'll review down below: Lions Head Meatballs ($25): I've had lion's head meatballs at another Chinese establishment on Eastside, and these are decent meatballs in comparison for very slightly cheaper. Tender and nice light flavor, it is nice that they are supplemented with bok choy as they are quite hearty. Salted Egg and Shrimp Tofu ($20): I think this was my favorite dish out of the three. Better quantity and the salted egg gives a nice creamy and subtle savory flavor, and goes nicely with rice. Tofu is cooked well, and there is a small scattering of shrimp throughout the plate. Shanghai Style Braised Kaofu ($15): A cold Shanghai kaofu is a classic dish that I've tried many times, and I think a restaurant should serve if they are Shanghainese. The kaofu has nice flavor - not too sweet and not too salty with a pleasing spongey texture. I only wished that the quantity was bigger for $15 - the spoon for scale really gives the impression of how large the plate was, and underneath the initial layer of kaofu you see in the picture, there unfortunately wasn't any more, just other components like bamboo shoots and woodear. Though most of the dishes had good flavor, the pricing was steep considering the amount of food you get for the price you pay. I left still feeling a bit hungry as Shanghai dishes are usually lighter and don't fill you up as much. Though there aren't too many other Shanghai restaurants to compare to on Eastside, I'll probably put Shanghai House at like a 3.5/5 in all things considered. read more

Only Shanghai restaurant in Seattle area. Have many very shanghai dishes. But they moved to this much smaller place, so that it seems the options of dishes are less than before. I recommend to dine in, the dishes take-out is not as good as fresh cooked. Some dishes are pricey. But this is the only Shanghai restaurant, so we have no choice. Free Parking. My friend and I came here for dinner a few days ago, and I was pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem in the Factoria area! With ample parking and few customers inside, my friend and I were seated immediately (well she got there first but that's what she told me). My friend mentioned that staff kinda just look at you and give you either the Korean or Chinese menu and since she's Korean we got the Korean menu - I don't really have a problem with this but maybe I wanted to check out the Chinese food too! I saw some other reviews complaining about the service but I didn't encounter any problems! They were prompt, checked in on us, and very friendly! My friend and I definitely felt bad though cause the restaurant closed at 8:30 and we were there until close just chatting. In terms of food, my friend and I split the black bean noodles and sweet and sour pork - both of which I HIGHLY recommend. I personally like how the sweet and sour pork came separated between the pork and sauce, so we could either pour the sauce over or just dip individual pieces. The sauce came in a massive bowl with tons of toppings, and the pork itself was perfectly crispy! I also really enjoyed the sauce for the black bean noodles - good seasoning and not too salty! Went with a large group (reserve a room in advance) and was able to try a lot of dishes. Although it was hit or miss, I would definitely go back just for the stir fried rice cake with shepherd's purse, the fried pumpkin coated with salted egg yolk, and Shanghainese yellow eel -- so good! Service is also fast and a bit no-nonsense. A spot with some very delicious and unique dishes that you can't really find anywhere else in the area. I can see it becoming one of my go-tos. read more

The food here was pretty flavorful! It is more Asian fusion with a Korean menu as well. I went with a party of 4 and we ordered 4 dishes and white rice for the 4 of us. The rice was nice and fluffy and it was tasty! Always a good idea to have a side of it because it goes with everything. We also got the noodles which had beef and it had a lot of flavor. We got the string beans with garlic -- delicious and full of garlic flavor. The fish was flavorful as well. The fish is a more numbing spice so if you are sensitive to spice I would not get this fish. We also ordered a pork dish that I did not eat and forgot to take a picture. It had a good amount of pork for 3 people and it also had a lot of tofu curd string type thing in it as well... which kind of seemed like a filler to me, however it may just be how the dish is supposed to be! tldr; delicious food with great portions, quick service Visited today for lunch around 1 pm - not many people in the restaurant and ample parking. Our party of 3 was seated at a booth immediately. We ordered off the Korean menu, and got the classics; (black bean noodle) (spicy seafood soup) and (sweet and sour pork). The Pork came out first, and I could tell it had been freshly fried - some places pre-fry and reheat, but it was so good here because it tasted fresh. The sauce was not too sweet or sour and had a great amount of toppings inside as well. The other two dishes were surprisingly delicious too. The black bean noodles tasted a bit overcooked, but the sauce was really good and not too salty. The spicy seafood soup had a fair amount of seafood in it, and the broth tasted really clear. Wasn't super spicy. Overall, I would recommend if you're looking for some good Korean-style Chinese food. They also have a regular Chinese menu for Shanghai dishes, but we only ordered off the Korean menu. read more

Not sure why Yelp also has this place listed as Korean in addition to Chinese but it's definitely wholly Chinese lol. We came on Chinese New Year and it wasn't very busy. Service was pretty fast too but the dishes each came out in very distinct intervals. For 3 people, this was a perfect amount (we finished everything) - kao fu, veggie fried rice, salted egg yolk covered pumpkin, red braised pork belly, and green beans. We weren't originally going to get the fried rice but rice was $2 a serving anyway so we figured might as well. I've never had kao fu before but it's this seitan dish thats's saucy and sweet. Quite good. Green beans were good as the standard, and I love any salted egg pumpkin dishes anywhere so that was good. The pork belly was quite thick and sweet for me but I'm weird about not liking that. Others definitely did. It also came with tofu skin knots in it which was good. Overall good taste but a bit expensive and it's weird we were able to make our way through so many dishes. Could probably do with slightly larger servings. read more

Food This is my family's go-to jjajangmyn place in Bellevue. We love eating here because the food and kimchi are so good. Our regular order is jjajangmyun, jjambbong, and tansuyuk (Sweet & Sour Pork) with sauce on the side. Value The value is pretty good, especially for lunch. We always order off the Korean menu, but the jjajangmyun is always bigger than I can eat myself. The jjajangmyun is pretty decent for the price. The sides look expensive, but it's worth it if you're sharing with the group. Service I've come here for several years and always has great service. The waiters/waitresses can take Korean orders and check in once in a while to refresh the tea or kimchi. They also can accommodate most requests, like removing eggs or getting sauce on the side (for some dishes) Setting The restaurant is really clean and pretty well spread out. There are two sections of the restaurant that can accommodate larger and smaller groups. The larger group area features circular tables with a rotating platform and the smaller area features tables that seat 4-5 people. The hot and sour soup was delicious, they had added a sweetener, perhaps sugar... I would have called it a "hot and sweet and sour" soup. A crab Rangoon appetizer is standard with the meal, it was very tasty. The Mongolian beef was rich in flavor, the meat was supple, and there was a lot of sauciness. It was a mediocre place. They have unique plates here that you probably won't be able to find anywhere else (or you'd have to look pretty hard to find them). The staff are generally nice and attentive but I think you get better service if you speak their language (Mandarin, I unfortunately only speak Cantonese). The other person in my group is also Chinese and they communicated in Mandarin together. They assumed the other person uses chopsticks and that I didn't. The taste is so authentic it gives me flashbacks to my childhood, when I ate these food growing up in Shanghai. I'm amazed by the "shanghai double cooked fish" （古法熏鱼）, and wined chicken (醉鸡), tbh haven't had this kind of authentic food for a long time. So I went to Shanghai House instead as it's just across the street. We ordered Jajangmyon and Jjampong and Tangsuyuk. I was pleasantly surprised as the taste of Jjajangmyon was much better than I remember that of New Peking. Also the other two dishes were so good as well. Authentic shanghai cuisine in greater Seattle area, some dishes are only seen here not anywhere else. The fried shrimp was my favorite. The sweet and savory sauce was poured on top of crispy jumbo shrimps (shells on). The deep-fry process was different from that to make fried chicken. There was no crust outside the shrimp. I liked this way much bwtter - less carbs and more shrimp! The sauce made me home sick and I finished the WHOLE plate by myself, no exaggeration. I also loved the soup, the taste was authentic. I liked the bamboo and tofu inside. The only thing was that the pork cubes were only lightly cured, so the meat wasn't as firm as that in the authentic yan du xian. I come here atleast once or twice a week during lunch time from work. Their lunch specials are awesome... well that's why I keep going back there so often. I usually get their fried rice (chicken or veg), make sure to mention "spicy". It smells super good. Also, try out their moo-shu chicken, that's amazing too. Stumbled upon Shanghai House in Factoria/Bellevue after The Homie's DOE interview (5/16/17). We were so hungry that just about anything would taste good. However, we noticed that the restaurant's dining room kept filling up with lots and lots of Asian groups. Good sign. Long story short, here's the lowdown: Beverages: lots and lots of ice water, hot tea, and an icy cold Coke Starters: cup of Hot and Sour soup, 6 piece Gyoza, and 2 person Appetizer Plate with BBQ pork slices, fried shrimp, crab cream cheese wontons, and a giant veggie egg roll. Entrees with steamed rice Beef with Pea Pods and Water Chestnuts, Broccoli Beef and Carrots, and Lemon Chicken. Mostly hoovered everything...loved that veggies weren't overcooked and everything wasn't overly salty. Even tasted great as leftovers the next day. Straightforward Chinese cuisine. Unobstrusive wait staff. If I return, definitely will look closely at the noodle entrees. Not a very positive experience at this restaurant. One of the only good things about this restaurant was the service. Our food came quickly! We ordered the Lions Head, black bean noodles, Shanghai double-cooked fish, bok choy with seitan, and Shanghai noodles. The best dish was definitely the fish, which I recommend! Good crispiness and flavor. Now onto the bad parts. The Lion's Head was still frozen on the inside when it was brought to our table! Once they brought it back, actually cooked, we could barely eat it because the sauce (which there was a lot of) was so. dang. salty. The bok choy had no flavor, it was so bland. The black bean noodles were lukewarm and the noodles soggy. The Shanghai noodle dish came with only two pieces of bok choy. Usually, at other restaurants, a noodle dish comes with either a lot of vegetables, or some meat. Nope. This had nothing except two measly bok choys and the noodles (which, by the way, were meant to be "thick" but were just normal noodles...) Will not be going back anytime soon. read more

I have heard so many good things about this place for so long and I finally got to try it today! They're hot and sour soup is delicious! They are known for their famous homemade noodles! I tried Chinese pork tacos and fragrant chicken and both dishes were unlike anything I've had before! Incredible! This place was owned by a traditional Chinese family for years and years and recently was sold and bought by a new owner who you can tell absolutely loves running this place! Best jjamppong I've found near Seattle! It's nice and smoky from the sauteed vegetables and wok hei, but the broth still manages to be clean and refreshing. Their kung pao shrimp is also great, the shrimp are perfectly plump and succulent, while the sauce is a blend of sweet, sour, and savory. We also tried the tangsooyuk, but it was just okay. I grew up eating the one coated in sweet rice powder instead of flour, so it wasn't as crispy and light as I wanted. Overall, would definitely come back again, since the location is great and it's pretty hard to find good korean chinese food in the area :^) read more

You don't get the food as advertised - they said the lunch menu comes with appetizer but you can't choose from the options - need to be clarified so you are not misleading customers. Food takes a long time - I waited for about 30 minutes for a Mongolian beef we ordered and since I had a meeting I wasn't able to eat there so i took it to go. We got charged for a really small take out box. Thought that was really petty of them. So many good restaurants in town we will not return.
