I was excited to go to this restaurant. I had heard about the Carlotta and hydesville location for years, and made a special reservation to go for my out of town guests. Our server was out of it.... She interrupted our toast to ask us to order, forgot our appetizer and left our dirty plates on the table until we left. I guess a little patience, cleanliness, and eye contact was too much to ask. I was also confused about why every other table in the restaurant got a basket of warm corn bread muffins, and we're going without, except she didn't return to check on us through our meal, so how would she have known. My pulled pork BBQ sandwich was good enough, but the ribs were sub par, and the corn on the cob was ick... I loved the decor and cozy barn feeling, beautiful view, and low corkage fee for wine/$3 domestic drafts.... Won't return, sure eurekans will like it, but good BBQ is hard to come by! Shamus... What happened? I used to frequent the place, whenever I was in the area (prior to moving back to the region in which its located) in its previous location (Carlotta, CA). This was the pinnacle of my Humboldt-County Dining. I would go there with family, we'd all order something different, and share around... because literally everything was great, and worth sampling. Friendly customer service and great ambiance added to this. Then, the Bayshore Move. So here's my setting: I drop in as a non-reservation walk in, in March of 2013. I'm with a Date, and I'm reallllly excited to try the spot out, having not been to Shamus' since they were in their prior location. I have been talking the spot up for a couple hours at this point. We're greeted coldly by the girl acting as Hostess. We're shown to a center table in an over-populated section, flanked by two tables full of overly-loud kids. I ask if we can be moved to a more private area, free of screamo's. The waitress flat-out says, "no, we're not seating anyone out of this section." "Ok" says I. Not 2 minutes later, after giving our drink orders, the same waitress walks two older's (50+ year olds) past us, and sits them in the side-room we had asked to be seated in. So I ask her on her way back by (being that we were in sardine-seats, she had to walk within 5 inches of me anyway) "Hey! Why can they sit there, right after you told us no?" "They wouldn't take no for an answer." So I"m already not super stoked on this spot. The waitress is then even-more-cold, and eyeballing my date like she's done something wrong. We blow it off. We're having a good time in spite of the nonsense. Wine comes. Warm. Not like, Pinot-at-room-temp... but more like stored-too-close-to-heat warm. Ok. Forgivable, and hell, it's wet. Food comes. Half-rack for the little lady, and what is touted as "Grilled Snapper" for me. (George Carlin, wink wink). So I tuck in, expecting the phenom food I'd come to expect... and so does the companion. Nearly in unison, disappointment set in. For the sake of brevity (To make a long-story slightly-less-long), $65+15% should really come with some semblance of quality. We had an employee appreciation party tonight! The service was fabulous...Glenn was super attentive to everyone's needs! The grilled artichoke was awesome as it always is! My 2 year old devoured her cup of Mac and cheese, and the kids tri-tip was perfect! I had the appetizer clams! Great spicy choppino broth. The house oysters were great too. I wish they had a little more garlic and butter, but the crispy parm on top worked! My husband enjoyed his brisket, he said it needed a sauce, but there was plenty leftover for him to make a french dip tomorrow! A+ meal and service! read more

Great atmosphere. Service was excellent from Server 6. We had the blackened catfish and the pulled pork. The catfish needed to be spicier but was very flavorful and tender The pulled pork was good but not much flavor. Tasted better after I used their sauces, which were excellent. I had a side of Mac and cheese and chili. Both were bland and lacked finish The apple turnover was good for dessert. The two muffins (bread) they bring were good but not very flavorful. HMMMMM-I think I get it now. Everything was bland except for the excellent Black Butte Porter I had. I know of some sites this gets a 4 * but nowhere close on a four. Maybe for Eureka it's a 4 but not anywhere else. Find somewhere else to go if you can. read more

Superb food & drinks. Steak was sublime. Don't be shy if you don't get waited on right away - just be nice & speak up a little. We we're at bar. Oysters we're just as good as any I've ever had ( Acme House in New Orleans) except you could taste the California in them. Ribeye cooked perfectly. I forgive the tepid baked potato. All of the oakies who have given this place a bad review need to go back to the fast food restaurant where they came from. Look around Eureka -- where else are you going to go!? You should be delighted to have something like this in this Podunk backwards town. Guess what -- you may have to pay a little extra... and their food tastes smokey because that's the point! If you don't like it please don't take up space here. Enjoy your microwaved dinner at any of the other pits in town. Great food, service is sometimes a bit spotty (but its busy so get over it... at least this restaurant has a pulse), and reasonable prices. I decided to get the prime rib which was pretty good. sides still are lacking . Eureka needed this resturant, but its a little over the top. BBQ is meant to take the cheapest cuts of meat, and cook them super slow so they get tender and taste good. Notice I said CHEAPEST. Brisket is not an expensive cut of beef, for example. At this place, you are seriously paying alot for the decor. And sadly, it just isnt worth the money. I love BBQ, both cooking it and eating it...and this place sadly misses the mark on the staple BBQ meats of Brisket, Ribs, and Pulled Pork shoulder. I would never pay $28.00 for a rib eye, as I would never expect some one to cook a rib eye for me as well as I can for me...so I am not commenting on the steaks or chicken dishes here. They have good sauce, sides were just 'ok', and the service alomst had me give this place 2 stars...but some of them are pretty cute. read more

I came here for my birthday in October and forgot to write a review, so I'm doing it now. My family and I had never been here before and we had heard that the food was pretty good so we decided to give it a try. We were seated in a quiet area, which was nice. I didn't have a problem with the decor, but the rest of my family were turned off by the throngs of dead animals on the wall. The food: nothing special. Certainly nothing I couldn't make myself. I mean, I enjoyed my food. I got the grilled chicken skewers with vegetables. They were pretty good, but again, nothing I couldn't make myself at home. The rest of my family were completely dissatisfied with their meals. My mom had ordered the brisket which had come out to the table cold. I tried some of my mom's dish and it was almost slimy. My mom didn't want to make a fuss while we we were there, but her brisket looked downright disgusting. My dad and stepmom were underwhelmed by their meals as well. I don't know how a restaurant could stand to put out such a poor product. I remember that day-the restaurant wasn't busy. There was certainly no rush in the kitchen to get food out to the customer because our food took forever. They could've taken the time to at least make sure everyone's food was warm. So although I personally liked my meal, my family was disappointed and that is something I cannot ignore. Hopefully they've improved the quality of their food since then. Maybe we'll go back and give it another chance someday. There aren't a lot of good restaurants in Humboldt. This place has a lot of potential, but they're just not there yet. read more

First the building is amazing and beautiful, and the staff is always friendly. we have ate here several times so its not a one trip review. I have had a good steak here on one occasion. I have tried the brisket more than once its was dry. I normally love smoke flavor but was let down by the prime rib flavor. For me the biggest let down are the sides they are Lacking the OMG factor, entirely forgettable I keep trying this place and all ways wish I had gone to the Sea Grill instead. Sorry Guys let me know when the flavor matches the price. Maybe if I sit at the bar for and hour drinking first, the food might tastes better read more

I've been here twice, both times were horrible. The first time we sat at the bar to begin with. The bartenders were struggling to keep up with everything and you see the owner come from the side walking behind them, pays no attention to them or customers and strolls down to the end of the bar with his ridiculous look at me look at me cowboy hat on only to take out a glass of wine FOR HIMSELF. Completely unprofessional. The wait staff is terrible. They wander without knowing what to do, none of them are dressed the same, and they all look like they're about 12. The food; bland, my rib-eye was inedible because of the amount of fat on it, my potatoes were from a box. The second time I was served a burned turkey burger, I figured that would be impossible to screw up, but I was wrong. Even the waitress was appalled when she saw it. I sent it back and they offered another one, but at this point with both of these bad experiences I figured I should just cut my losses. The place is beautifully decorated, definitely spent some money on taxidermy. That's mainly what you're paying for, the prices are stupid compared to the food you are served. This Tesla Machine they have is probably the dumbest thing I've ever seen too. It's going to give an elderly person a hard attack, and I don't even want to think about how much energy it must take to run that thing. They crackle it off at least every 30 minutes. I will absolutely 100% NOT be going back to this place. Ever. read more

I like it. I've been here 3 times opening week. They are working out the bugs of a much larger operation. They'll get there. Wasn't pretty that first week. Great beer on tap, like the ribs and really enjoyed the great lamb rack. Get the balsamic drizzle on the side. Lamb is great without it and good to use sauce sparingly. Had a bite of the prime rib which was cooked well, lots of flavor from the dijon and oak pit. Not too overwhelming. Pulled pork is technically cubed but also very good. Really liked the Brisket soup! The first time I went here was with my in-laws from out of town. I remember it being awesome. The food was great and the atmosphere was just the right amount of cooky and wtf. The second time I went here was again with an out of town relative. We hyped it up because of our previous visit. But this time it just wasn't as good as we remembered. My aunt was kind of creeped out by the dead animals everywhere. The third time a friend of mine who's in town for business occasionally (Chevron facility right behind shamus) had always wanted to try it so we went. We went tonight after waiting some time to give this place some time to settle in. We got there at 5:45 on a Sunday. We waited about 10 minutes to be seated. Our server was on it almost immediately. She took our drink order and brought water. I love the atmosphere. Everyone was happy, including the customers around us. I got the two item combo with beef and pork ribs with a salad and chili. Beef ribs were perfect. Very good bbq. Pork was a close second. The chili was complex in taste and texture. My lady had the salad and steamer clams plus garlic bread. The bread was immediately noticeably awesome. Smoky and obviously cooked on the grill. Very nice. Clams were really tasty. Lots of garlic and white wine. We asked for a little more bread to soak up the broth. They brought out an additional six pieces and didn't charge. I had two nice martinis. Our server was cool, professional and not verly friendly, which I liked quite a bit. Not fake. The view is really nice. They fired up the Tesla coil. I loved that too. I can't wait to go back. I'll be enjoying my leftovers for sure. read more

This place was awesome when it first opened, but has been getting progressively more disappointing. The teenaged hostesses are definitely not customer-service oriented, but most of the servers we have had have been great. The food is good, but the portion size leaves you wanting. My husband got a burger, and ten french fries. My macaroni side dish was cold in the middle. Been here before and wasn't impressed. Only came here tonight for a friends aunts bday party. Waiter took 1:40mins to get us the food. When it arrived, it was cold! The steak was cold, vegetables were cold, and mashed potatoes were cold and hard. There were 22 people in our group with only ONE waiter. Who does that? When I went to complain to the front staff, she blew me off said "okay" and walked away as if she was put off that I had a legit complaint to state. What started the night off rough is when I went to order and everything I wanted to order involved mushrooms. I stated to the waiter, "I'd like ..... But with no mushrooms." He said "that's the way it comes sorry." I've never in my life been to a restaurant that told me no. So I didn't order my own plate and split my friends plate with her. Maybe I'm just use to high class restaurants in the Bay Area, or maybe the waiter just didn't know what the heck he was doing and was rude. Service and food was miserable. I have never had a bad experience here. Until now. I asked about happy hour & if we needed to be seated in the bar. Waitress just said yes. No "did you want to move there? " Got grilled artichokes. Flavor good, undercooked. Salad good. Cocktail good. I got BBQ chicken breast & steamed veggies. A piece of broccoli, 2 onion layer pieces, 2 coins of yellow squash, 4 small pieces of red bp and 2 cauliflower florets. I could have cupped them in one hand and had plenty of room. Over cooked, soft and unseasoned. Chicken looked boiled & smashed, and then someone dumped BBQ sauce on it. My bf burger & fries looked great. I decided to go for blackberry cheesecake. She brought a tray to show what they had. Before she served the slice she heavily drizzled it with what appeared to be Hershey chocolate sauce. I said I didn't think the one she showed me had chocolate sauce, she thought it did, but offered to replace it for me. I said no thinking that I must have not noticed and felt like an asshole. Nope. I was right and it ruined the fruity dessert. Scraped it off. So disappointing. Will I go there again? Probably, but will be more careful in my choices and hopefully not sit in her section again. read more

So I've been here three times now. Twice the food was pretty good. Once the food was terrible - like day old dried out barbeque. In fact, I think it probably was. This place can make some very good barbeque, but at best it doesn't seem consistent and at worst they might be serving up some leftovers from the night before on occasion? The good: The wings have a cool and yummy and unique sauce. The dino bone (cool to be able to add a few ribs to a meal). The cornbread. The meh: Their homeade barbeque sauces aren't as good as you would think they should be. The bad: Salads seem to be served quite often with no effort to remove browned and wilted lettuce. The bbq sandwiches are way way too saucy. Occasionally the meat is dried out and tough like maybe its from the night before? Overall: Interesting atmosphere. Good service. Hit or miss food. I stayed a t the hotel next door for a week and ate at shamus t bones 3 times each meal was fantastic. I am a good cook myself and very critical when I eat out, I seldom think to myself I could not do this dish or this dish better. That being said I had the best ribs ever served to me ANYWHERE, and I get around ALOT. The New york steak I was brought was not only cooked perfectly medium rare but was easily as good as the one I do at home...ok it was BETTER. The chili was so good it could be a main course. And who doesent like yummy cornbread The service from the greeting staff to the wait staff was excellent, I was never made to feel rushed, and was offered refills promptly more cornbread often and a smile all the time. Tell me where you can get a wait staff that notices you looking at the owners tesla coil, and puts in a request to fire it off for you. Who does nice stuff like that.... SHAMUS T BONES. I saw the owner there, and possibly his wife, both were serious about their place and I felt like I was more at a gathering of my extended family than out alone far from home. Its a loud place, no denying it, which is good cause ina month or so when I'm camping up the coast I'm bringing my wife and three boys here, over an hours drive. I was very disappointed with the quality of all their food. The Cesar dressing on the half salad was bland and nearly flavorless. The pork and beans had pulled pork and tasted like they were burnt, not smokey. The mashed potatoes were again very bland. This is a trend. Finally to the steak. I ordered the 16 oz New York cooked medium. The tips of the steak were medium and the middle was medium-rare. The bigger issue is that the steak was nearly flavorless. It was as if they didn't season the steak at all and expected me to just coat it in butter to add flavor. Again, very disappointed with the quality of the food. We love coming here for happy hour. The beers are cheap and selection is good. The happy hour menu is also really good and we always end up eating dinner just off that menu. I hope I don't regret giving them 4 stars later on but I have had some great meals here. First off this is the most beautiful restaurant in Eureka by far with great views of the bay. The service isn't the the best but they are by no means rude just unorganized and untrained I am assuming. Hopefully they will get better. The problem I find with the place is how inconsistent everything is. It always tastes and even looks different both entrees and sides. I have eaten there quite a few times and I only have disliked my food maybe one time. My favorite is the brisket sandwich. I have heard some horror stories from employees saying stuff like they throw moldy old meat in the chili to save money, but I hope thats not true or an exaggeration but I have a feeling it might be considering how inconsistent the flavors and appearance of the food is. read more
