We enjoyed lunch in celebrating our 49th anniversary here, with an outstanding view of the River. I ordered the sea scallops and she the lobster roll. Both were fresh and plentiful, well garnished. The views here cannot be beat, overlooking the majestic Hudson River with the Mid-Hudson Bridge in the foreground, probably one of the most scenic and romantic views around. The interior is modern, the inside bar is welcoming, the bartenders are friendly and accomodating. The outside Tiki bar is also a big hit, however being happy hour on a Friday we were unable to get a seat, we settled for the inside bar. After a drink at the bar we moved to our outside patio table for two, very nice views of the river and bridge. Everything was perfect, then the food arrived and I will not call it a disappointment but for such a beautiful location the food quality was lacking. I had the NY Strip steak and I must say I make a better steak on my grill, for the price this was not a good cut of meat, nor was it melt in your mouth steak. I gave this restaurant a 3 star because of the food, everything else was very good, had my steak been a better cut and cooked to my liking (I asked for medium/rare) it was medium to well, not much pink in the middle, I would have rated it a much better review. I would come here again, but only for the atmosphere and drinks, I doubt I would order dinner here again, maybe try just appetizers next time and see how it goes. read more

Had a very enjoyable meal here today. We Ordered the crab guacamole, lobster roll, filet mignon and chicken sandwich. Everything was pretty delicious, especially the lobster roll. The peppercorn sauce for the steak was a little thick but still pretty good. You can't beat the ambiance and views from this place. Shadows use to be the place to go to however the food and service has changed a lot. I don't feel you get your $$$$ worth and the lack luster service is just not worth a tip at times and that's most of the time. Plus several times when the so called white area was the place to book my family tried to book it, my mother really wanted to be there, we would book it and as we arrived stating we reserved the room, we were told no. Straight couples get the best tables while they put same sex couples (who made a reservation) in areas infested by mosquitoes. We asked to be moved and management had a full-on attitude. Our steak was mediocre. The octopus appetizer was terrible. The manager is friendly to straight couples while entirely avoiding our table. A straight Caucasian couple who came 20 minutes after us got a better table and got their dinner first. The manager spent a great deal of time chatting with them! We couldn't take it. If you are looking for great service, a fabulous view and delicious food, this restaurant hits on all three points. The fried chicken salad is delicious and the sangria pairs with it perfectly. The hot bread with the sun-dried tomato butter was an unexpected bonus that is delivered to every table complementary. I was staying in the area for a couple of days and was looking for a place to have dinner. Being from NYC I forgot that not a lot of places are open late during the week and I was so glad this one was. We arrive without a reservation and asked if it was possible to be seated outside, the hostess was nice enough to find us a table with only about a five minute wait. I'm so glad we came here since this restaurant has beautiful views. Our waiter was attentive and recommended I have the chicken under a brick since I had no clue what I wanted to have. Well he was right my chicken was delicious and super tender. My dinner companion had the filet and his meal was great as well but I think I liked mine a tad better. We didn't want dessert but did have some chocolate martinis, I wasn't too happy with this selection since they weren't good. I hate sending things back so we just sucked it up and drank them but next time I will stick with wine. I will definitely come back next time I'm in the area, my dinner was great. read more

I came to celebrate my birthday a day earlier with my husband . Everything was pretty good, appetizers , etc. After that while waiting for our dinner I requested coffee. I asked if they had stevia since I only drink natural sweeteners. The restaurant did not have it. I was disappointed so I used what they had. The waitress was kind and apologized for not having it. The entree stated that it came with seasonal vegetables. I asked her what type of vegetable it was and she said brussel sprouts. I love them so I was looking forward to them. When the dish was brought out the vegetable was asparagus . Everything looked tasty until I ate the Ribeye and the mashed potatoes. OMG, they were so salty. I ate a few more pieces and I thought maybe it was just me. I asked my husband to taste it and he agreed with me. It tasted like the salt shaker had fallen on the meat. I informed the young lady about it and she asked me if I wanted another one. I told her no because I had eaten about a quarter of it. I just could not eat any more potatoes or meat. The only thing I finished was the vegetable . I really did not enjoy the meal although a percentage was taken off along with 25% that was taken off everyone's meal which was advertised . I had not been there in a long time so I thought maybe i would return. For now I may give them another chance, but for now I will try some other locations in the area. read more

I trekked up here for a bridal shower. The food was excellent, the drinks were superb, the waitstaff was nice... so why only three stars? While we were perched right on the Hudson, the sights were beautiful even on an overcast day. I went to college in the Hudson Valley and miss these kinds of views terribly. My problems with Shadows, and at least with hosting a party there, is that there were two other parties in the same space, a birthday party and another bridal shower. And everyone can just walk in front of everyone's spaces. Additionally, there are casual diners as well, and they were on the left of us. The bridal shower was at noon, so there were lots of families with kids in their pajamas, etc. This isn't normally a problem, but when you're all dresses up nice and then turn your head and have other diners kind of included in your activities dressed down, it takes away from the occasion. In addition, these diners too would cross in front of our party. This wasn't a problem until our bride-to-be started to open gifts. We'd constantly have to strain our necks to see around people who were passing by, and often times bottlenecking as well. The noise of having two other parties right next to you and casual diners was also something to frown upon. Yes, our bride was shy, but even when her or the MOH spoke up to call out who had given her a present, we could not hear. And we were sitting no more than 10 feet away. Those were pretty much the negatives, but they did greatly affect my experience. The food was stellar, I ordered the chicken with the champagne sauce. It was a massive, perfectly cooked piece of chicken. Their mashed sweet potatoes were out of this world, sugar and cinnamon-y. I love that they put it on the plate with a piping bag. The asparagus on the plate were also lightly seasoned and cooked just right as well. And their drinks! I first got the white sangria, which was super, super good. I had originally wanted to get the Blueberry Lavender Lemonade (Mojito?), but the server wasn't sure if they had been made, so that's why I got the sangria. She did bring the lemonade to another family member and I ordered one too after that. And then another, and maybe another. I cannot tell you how much I loved that drink. read more

My husband and I went here last night for my birthday / wedding anniversary we had made reservations online which was very easy to do We started off at the bar and Jessica (who's first night it was ) was our bartender we were promptly greeted by Jessica and served swiftly Jessica was super sweet and very nice engaging us in conversation when time allowed as she was pretty busy and made the bar experience very pleasurable We then checked in for our 8pm reservation and were seated quickly and menus were left for us to go over as well as a specials list , and then our server (Raymond ?) came and greeted us with a wonderful smile and took our orders : lobster cocktail , buffalo calamari , surf and turf , and the raw sampler All of which were extremely delicious!!!! On a glorious, sunny day, there are only a few eating establishments in Poughkeepie that provide a dining experience with such a quality view! Yesterday was a crisp, clear autumnal day - perfection! My friends brought me for brunch this past Sunday bc i absolutely love brunch and mimosas and an overabundance of food on a lazy Sunday with a pick of breakfast and dinner-ish eats. Eyyo! I always thought Shadows was a nicer, ritz-y kinda joint and when we arrived there were mucho heads. As I start to study around and get a feel for the crowd, the food and service, its not quite the 4 and 5 star as I assumed. Our booth up by the bar had ripped upholstery and made this clunking noise if you leaned on it in a certain spot. Uhh ok, is this Shadows on the Hudson or The Old Country Buffet? The food was an enormous variety but quality wise, it was so-so. The eggs, potatoes, bacon and sausage were on par. I tried this stuffed pork with a spinach looking substance inside, wrapped in proscuitto and was hoping for a wow factor w that bc it looked great. It was mehhh mostly bc it was not hot at all and the spinach/cheese whatever mixed center was not melty and soft but just a big chunk. The chicken marsala was not flavored well and I could barely cut that biotch. My dude and I both thought it was old chicken and tasty off. As for the patrons, some were in their Sunday best and looking lovely, others were a part of communion parties, and then you had the lower end of the scale patrons who thought the Tilapia Provencal was a fish "Pro-Vink-ill." I couldnt stop laughing at that but also showed that this was more of a budget buffet than a brunch on the hudson fine dining afternoon. My other annoyance was the lack of certain foods like eggs benedict, turkey sausages, and wtf.... no mimosas?! I know you don't always have the luxury of getting bottomless ones but no even one effing bevvy was included? We asked the bartender if there were any alc drinks we could order by pitcher and he said no, making us all get individual ones... Two mins later I look at the beverage menu and see one cocktail sold.... BY.THE.PITCHER. Thanks a lot bro. Ya damn newb. I would still prob come back as I dont think this wicked stomachache and nausea I'm getting now is associated w the food from Sunday but rather the dozen beers I polished off during the day after. OK- I am not much of a brunch person, it's just too much pressure to decide which meal you are eating. Do I really want Crabmeat Stuffed Filet of Sole touching my eggs? It's so disturbing. After hearing quite a bit about their brunch decided to try it. Made a reservation , when we got there we were seated at a table next to the server station and when asked to move we were told there were no other tables available. That was not true there are plenty of tables available. Servers lacked interest or ambition. I think since it was a buffet they felt like there was less of a chance of them getting a tip.? The hostess seated us and then walked away never gave us any direction about what to do and where to go. The food was very good but the set up was very disorganized. The flow to get the food was awkward. At one point a waiter came over and asked if we needed anything? We didn't know what that meant! We asked for mimosas which they brought us but we were never told they were additional charge. Then we asked for coffee which they brought us and again no indication it was an additional charge. We came here for a surprise birthday party. First impression from the outside was that it was a swanky place. When you walk in, our impression was correct as the inside was also very elegant to say the least. We sat in their hallway and waited about 20 minutes because another party ran late. Usually would not be an issue except the surprise person was coming soon. That was a little nerve wracking. We were seated outside under their plastic dome in the back. Scenery was nice as you can see the large bridge sitting over the Hudson. Wait staff was also very nice. When our friend arrived and we yelled surprise it was time to eat. The buffet menu was not huge. It was on the smaller side. Eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles, potatoes and then goes into stuffed sole, chicken parmesan, pulled bbq pork and hit sausage. Don't forget fried chicken. Behind that was a carving station and donuts and pastries. The dessert table had nice little sample desserts. Food was good, not great. The selection is a bit weird as it went all over the place in my opinion. Desserts were good as well. Price I do not know since it was paid for already and so can't comment on that. read more

The bar seems like it is well stocked and really would be nice to spend some time. There were 9 of us, so our orders were across the board. Started with the corn and crab chowder. Seemed to have a hint of sherry and was very tasty. The menu kept me torn and we, as a group, went the full gamet of surf, to pasta, to turf. No complaints from anybody. Haven't been here in quite some time but was pleasantly surprised this afternoon when we stopped in for lunch. I had half a dozen fresh raw blue point oysters on the half shell with tasty cocktail sauce and a shallot mignonette - a steal at $9. My friend had a tasty Mediterranean sandwich with sweet potato fries. The fries were so good, light crispy and sweet, not drowning in oil at all!
