This was our first time visiting Novella's, for a party of 200+ people. The room where we were seated was a reasonable size while it was easy to pass and move through. The menu was quite large with a lot to choose from, and the chicken parm I ordered was pretty decent, but I wouldn't call it the best in the world. Depending on the party size, the food takes time to come out. The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout the whole party and there when needed. I hope we get to use Novella's again for another event. read more

Had the opportunity to dine here last weekend while visiting New Paltz for a reunion. We rented out the party room (party of 40) and throughly enjoyed the experience. From the bartenders to the servers the service was attentive and warm. I had the New England Clam Chowder for my appetizer and it was a bowl of pure comfort food. Perfect consistency, not too thick or thin and nice pieces of clams. After eyeballing the steak option, I pivoted to the salmon dish and was totally satisfied. The fish was cooked well, with a nice crust and the Yukon potatoes were complimented with the artichokes. Had a bite of the steak and it was also done right. Great food, solid service and an 80's/90's throwback party in the other room that we were encouraged to join, yes! Looking forward to trying some more items on the menu next time I'm up there. Easy parking right in large parking lot. Nice building with nice decor. Service was top notch from walking into the door to our waitress. Water very good. Wine choices excellent. Go Malbec !! Bread and olive oil with olives very good. Tiger shrimp appetizer was perfectly cooked. Dipping sauce was ok. Salad was fresh and balsamic dressing on point. I'm up in New Paltz for a job interview and have never been here before. After walking around town and looking at a bunch of restaurant reviews, I decided to come to Novellas, as it's right near my hotel. I am SO glad that I did! First of all, the place is elegant and romantic, but still casual enough to play Fleetwood Mac and not be overly dim. My server was very helpful and attentive. Small detail yet very impressive - the olive oil to dip the bread in was very tasty, having two green olives at the bottom for extra flavor, and some garlic flavor as well. I ordered the caprese salad and the flatbread. For a place that feels this fancy, I was very happy at the larger-than-expected portion sizes. The salad had three thick slices of tomato, all different colors; deliciously salty (but not too salty) mozzarella between each slice; all on a bed of greens, to catch the extra balsamic dressing. Note about the dressing - tart with a bit of a honey taste. I loved it! The flatbread came with pesto, sun dried tomatoes, pine nuts, and goat cheese. It was pretty salty, but I really enjoyed it. The pine nuts added a really nice crunch to balance out the softness of the cheese and pesto. I took half of each plate with me back to the hotel...but they definitely didn't last long! :) If I move here - or even just come back to visit - I will surely be back at Novellas to try more dishes. read more

A great place to go with family and friends. Ample space in dinning room area and lounge so that you can enjoy a delicious meal at a safe distance from others. If you want to order take out, it is just as good. Some of my favorites are their Parmesan and truffle fries, BEC burger and Octopus appetizer. They offer brunch 11-3 on Sundays and the eggs Benedict and waffles are so yummy! Come in to get mimosas or spicy and flavorful bloody Mary's. read more

So pretty. So great. Conveniently located off the thruway, lucky us to find this attractive, clean delicious oasis I enjoyed the butternut squash stuffed with farro and goat cheese. It was moist with a beautiful balance. Not salty. My husband said same could be said for his french onion soup He took advantage of their happy hour six dollars for delicious meaty chicken wings with homemade blue cheese dip and crudités. I dined here a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night for the very first time with 3 others in my dining party and we were all VERY delighted with our experience! Ryan, our server, was very attentive, amiable, knowledgeable and courteous. The cocktails were expertly crafted - we all agreed on that - although one person in our party had draft beer only. The beverage selections were very good - something for everyone. I was in the mood to eat "lighter" that evening, so I chose the tiger shrimp for an appetizer, the soup of the day (a creamy butternut squash) and then the arugula and beet salad for my main meal. Everything was exceptional. Like, I stated earlier, we were ALL very pleased and satisfied with everything - the ambiance, the hostess, our servers, and the food and drinks. When we left, it looked like there was a lot of fun to be had over at the bar area! Everyone seated at the bar was laughing and/or smiling. The area was filled with people that appeared to be really enjoying themselves- including the bar tender! Novellas, right next to the Hampton Inn in New Paltz, looked like a sure bet; semi-fine dining, with "Lobster Lover's" specials in August. Let's start with the cleanliness of the bathrooms, a strong indicator of the restaurant overall. The bathroom looked very clean, that is, until you look up! A quarter inch of dust can be seen on the stall walls separating each stall; so visible, it's a wonder why they waste $ to pay someone to clean! The ceiling fan blowers were so clogged with dirt that the edges of the registers could not be seen ‼ The mirrors by the sinks, and the pictures on the wall were just as dusty. Next, the Ambiance was awesome; very relaxing. Menus very nicely displayed, and service impeccable, though slow. Drinks were interesting and delicious; the salad was wonderful. I ordered the 2 stuffed lobster tails, one of the specials. They were broiled, and seemed cool & undercooked under the stuffing. I sent them back; they returned so hard & rubbery that I couldn't chew them! The wait staff was very understanding and took that off the check. She also have us a dessert free to make up for the inedible lobster. My wife had the petite fillet mignon ; which was superb. I would definitely avoid the Lobster at Novellas; stick with a steak. I would have given Novellas 5 stars, but for the visible dust & dirt on high (but reachable) surfaces! read more

After moving to New Paltz from Manhattan a year and a half ago, I was looking for a good go-to place in town and The Grille absolutely filled that void. I can't say enough about their incredible happy hour from 4-7 with unbeatable prices for specialty cocktails, wine and more- including delicious bites. While town has great casual spots, it's great to enjoy an affordable night in an upscale environment. The staff makes everyone feel like this is their home away from home which keeps folks coming back. Some favorites include the mussels, flatbread, brick pressed chicken- just to name a few. My fiancé and I had our 1st meal here last night to celebrate Valentine's Day ....ironically we also had our first date here, at the bar on 3/29/2019. I'm so happy we chose Novella's to celebrate our love. With not many real restaurants in New Paltz we often find ourselves at a casual pub with mediocre food! It was a so nice to have a surprising change...first, we were greeted with a warm welcome by Michael...we were seated at a cozy table for 2 by the window, with pretty lights outside reflecting off the snow...the ambience was warm considering the place could be cold and generic as it also serves as a catering hall...dim lights, tables lit by candlelight, and a gas fireplace. Michael was also our waiter...he was extremely attentive, knowledgeable, and helpful in his suggestions...he has a true knowledge of food, a quality many waiters and waitresses lack these days! Let's talk food...we started with the Ahi tuna and cucumber salad appetizer perfect portion size, high quality, and flavorful! I had the salmon with a lemon risotto and fresh string beans! All I can say is delicious! My fiancé had the surf and turf that his mouth was watering over...he said the steak was cooked to perfection..." a little crisp on the outside, leaving a medium-rare inside" something he claims is hard to achieve, I wouldn't know as I don't eat meat! Finally our dessert! A creme brûlée cheesecake in a raspberry sauce with a Riesling jelly on the side to dip in! I'm usually not a fan of cheesecake but decided on it as it sounded interesting and my guy is a cheesecake fan,and I do love creme brûlée...all I can say is wow! I believe a torch flame was used to char the crust which really gave this dessert a stand out taste! I can't wait to go back and try more! My friend and I stayed in New Paltz for a few days and Novella's happened to be right across from where we were staying. We went for some drinks and dessert, which were DELICIOUS! We went back again the following night to try new items. I highly recommend the creme brûlée cheesecake, peanut butter and chocolate cobbler, lavender lemonade, mango fizz and blueberry mojito. The patio was decorated with beautiful string lights and they had a large fire pit for people to sit around and still be 6ft apart. Michael, Caroline and Isabelle took excellent care of us. Michael also described the owner as a "true team player" who takes cares of the employees. The employees seem so happy and are glad to be able to serve. I would give this restaurant more than five stars if I could. The restaurant is quite hidden (it's next to the Hampton Inn), but is an absolute must visit!! read more

We stopped on our way home tonight after searching on Yelp. We are a complicated bunch with MULTIPLE food allergies: gluten, dairy, eggs, nuts, peanuts, fish, and shellfish. First of all, they have a gluten free menu, but more importantly... when my daughter found out that the fries would have been safe except for the fact that they are fried in peanut oil (in a dedicated fryer), they were happy to pan fry her some safely in soy oil. Each member of our party was happy with the food they received. No reactions. Attentive service. I couldn't ask for more. Stopping for food with allergies is always a huge process. This time, they made it a pleasant experience. We will definitely return when we are in the area. read more

I have gone to this restaurant before about a year ago. Well today March 12 2020 was an absolute nightmare. I usually order the pork chop dinner. Came out raw in the middle and waited another half an hour to get another that tasted like a cup of salt was poured on it, the mashed potatoes tasted awful as they also had a pound or so of salt as well as the French fries that my son ordered. I'm so ooo disappointed. The prices are high for the caliber of food offered and in my opinion it's not worth it. Save your money and go elsewhere because in reality the food really sucks and so does the servers. Three thumbs down!!!! either get a real chef or close the place down! read more

I had my socially distant micro wedding dinner at novellas in October. The restaurant was across the street from the hotel my wedding group stayed at. Food and drinks venue everything was excellent. Stopped here based on another Yelp review! From the first step inside, we were met with warm welcoming smiles. Our group had a guest with severe food allergies and the chef couldn't have been more accommodating! They have a terrific Gluten Free menu and the food was top notch. Our waiter, Jonathan, went above and beyond to answer all our questions, check in with our meals. They even willingly split an entree for kids with loads of hand cut, pan fries. My wife and I came here on August 21st. Let me start by saying the place is beautiful... We were seated right away by the friendly bartender/hostess. I had the Berkshire pork chop and my wife had the spaghettini. We had ordered the arancini balls as an app but there was some confusion and it came out with dinner. Well everything was fantastic, no joke. The owner/manager (not sure) was so sorry for the mistake that they gave us free dessert. We had the berry crumble and we both agreed that this is probably the absolute best crumble we have ever had. Yeah, it was that good. Anyway, we'll definitely be returning! read more

First time I've gotten food here and was really disappointed. I usually don't complain but I literally threw it out. Lobster and lots of fettuccine was as chewy as a boot with uncooked cherry tomatoes and a ton of oil and the French onion soup was so salty like it's sat in a pot just condensing all day. We as a group of 8 came into your restaurant and immiediatly asked if we had reservations instead of how can we help you (and we did) there were only 3 out of 10 tables occupied. Even though it was almost empty it took a good hour to get our food and then when mine came out it was cold. So as high class as they want to be perceived the attitude left a lot to be desired the food would have been good if it wasn't cold, we asked for separate checks and those were all messed up. Admittedly, I drank more than I ate at The Grille but it will be the first place I visit for dinner when I return in October. This review is mostly for the bar which was fabulous! We spent five days in NY and The Grille was walking distance from our hotel. First my bartender critique. Tyler is THE queen of bartenders. He is welcoming, warm, and friendly with a sense of humor that was just right for us. Young guy but tolerated our gushing about our childhood love of Dino as we reminisced about The Flintstones...named after Dean Martin (?). Now my critique of the adult beverages. The mixed drinks were excellent .... the combo was just right. The Espresso Martini was beyond delish! Nice selection of top shelf as well as lower priced selections. Bottom line is this .... if you want a special place to go for a drink, this would be my choice hands down. Great atmosphere....no need to sit bar side as there are nice tables to sit and enjoy. Everyone staying at the Hampton Inn should mosey on over. The restaurant has been newly reopened so it was quite quiet when we came by. It was quite highly rated so we wanted to give it a try. We were amazed. Service was patient with us because we wanted a nice and slow dinner. The yellow pepper ginger soup was delightful. The Belgian endive salad was to die for. We will have to learn how to remake it when we get back to NYC. The old fashion made a great companion and I think they ought to add Negronis to their cocktail menu because they made it really well. Salmon with crispy skin for my entree was well done - I think they may try to make the salmon in the future pinker but the skin was nice and crunch while the accompanying lemon mascarpone risotto simple made the dish. I finished every bite. For everyone staying at the hotels nearby - don't sell yourself short by only trying the places downtown - Novella's is perfect for a nearby option in case you don't want to drive downtown! And it's definitely worth the trip if you are staying in downtown New Paltz! read more

I overheard from the bartender (she was telling someone else, she has not paid me much attention at all) that they are changing menu soon. The service is lacking. Hands down a WONDERFUL experience! From the atmosphere, to the service, to the food, this place did not miss a beat! We had the pleasure of having the manager John take care of us. Even though the establishment was anything but empty, He was so attentive that we felt as though we were the only people in the restaurant. I had the steak frites and my love had the arugula salad and truffle fries. The steak could not have been prepared better. It melted in my mouth and the flavor was amazing. I joined my close friends, who live close by, for dinner here. The manager waited on our table, and was beyond excellent, making sure that we were satisfied with every detail.
