SCW and I stopped into Shad Indian Restaurant while we were staying across the street for our London travels. I read the reviews on Yelp and we had to try it. The food here really is amazing. We were warmly greeted when we arrived for lunch shortly after they opened, had our choice of tables and ordered. We ordered veggie samosas for starter, SCW had the Channa Masala, and I ordered the Aloo Pak and some garlic naan. We also ordered two beers. The samosas came out first with some raita. They were incredibly good. So well cooked on the inside and bursting with flavor. I wasn't quite expecting the heat that slowly built but the raita was a good balance. SCW's Chana Masala was excellent, so well spiced and cooked to perfection. My Aloo Pak was incredibly flavorful and delicious. The spinach was so tender and melted in my mouth. The garlic naan was excellent as well. The interior is nice and warm and welcoming. The service was great as well. I definitely would come back here in the future given the chance. One of the best Indian food restaurants I've enjoyed so far. read more

Cute restaurant. When you walk in you feel like this is a very fancy and elegant restaurant for the way it is set up and its dimmed ambiance. Food delicious but portions are ridiculously small. Literally my entire meal was the size of a small cup of soup. I should have taken a picture. Very expensive for its portions. Most of the staff were really nice and friendly except the actual staff that took our order. We felt rushed ordering even though the restaurant was practically empty. read more

Very impressed with this place. We visited London and had to try the local Indian food. We decided to stay in tonight and take advantage of the delivery service offered within 3 miles of the restaurant. First, the attentiveness of the host who took my order on the telephone was outstanding. I told him that we were staying in a hotel and would like the food delivered to the hotel. There was some miscommunication due to different delivery address terminologies between the UK and the states. I was sure he was going to tell me to find Indian food elsewhere. He was pleasant to talk to despite the miscommunication--once we got the address situated. Ordering was easy. We received our food timely, hot and delicious! We will probably go dine in while we are still in town. Very impressed with the taste of the dishes. The quality of the food is very good--fresh, non greasy and delicious. AVOID! SCAMMY WAITER, SHADY PRICES Maybe the most unprofessional restaurant experiences I've ever had, which is why I've never felt the need to post a yelp review till now. We came in as a party of 5 and after placing about £40 worth of food, the waiter tried to pressure us multiple times, asking "are you SURE that's all you want to order?" which felt odd right off the bat. He offered us papad with chutney, which we assumed was free as its not only customary at many Indian restaurants, but he also phrased it as "do you guys want papad" and not "would you like to ORDER". We then asked for water, and he asked us to specify still/sparkling, cold/room temperature, and came back with two bottles, which again felt strange. Within a few glasses the water was finished and I asked for more, to which he clarified "the bottle, correct?" And as I started to ask what he meant by that, he walked away mid sentence and brought a bottle back. The food itself was decent enough, but the bill came, and turned out to be over EIGHTY POUNDS! We asked for a more detailed receipt, as well as the menu to look over again. He had charged £5 for five papads (fair enough, maybe we should have asked to make sure it was free, and £1 a papad isn't too crazy). But he had also charged £4.95 for the chutney! Which we not only didn't ask for, but in menu it is listed as £0.95 per person, for which we only got one chutney total. Not to mention that £0.95 x 5 doesn't even add up to £4.95. And finally, the waters totaled £13.95! We asked him why he never said there was a price for the water, and his explanation was that he did tell us it was going to be cold water, and when we mentioned it doesn't say anywhere on the menu a price for water, he said it was "customary". We decided to just pay the bill but definitely will never be back. To the owner/manager/whoever was in charge tonight, feel free to reach out and let me know if this wasn't a normal experience, because I would like to believe most people who come here aren't getting ripped off by scammy waiters. read more

Great spot with an owner who really cares that you get the dish and experience you want from Indian cuisine in London. I do eat there often and their diverse menu makes each time a new experience. The staff (well, all but one but that's to be expected) are friendly and helpful. If you're in the Tower Bridge area, it's worth visiting. read more

3.5* (but I am rounding up since The Shad deserves an overall rating higher than 2 stars. The interior is quite nice, although it could stand to lose on table from the middle row so that it is easier to to get to and from the back tables, and we found the service to be friendly despite our fourth running really late, and then having to cancel, so that we tied up a table for a LONG time. We started with papadums for the table; the onions could have used a finer dice to make them easier to eat, but the mango chutney and the mint sauce were excellent. The highlight of the meal was the Nazakat, recommended by the waiter, which was the most tender chicken I've ever had, hands down. For entrees the Lamb Grilled Bhuna was tasty and the Tandoori Chicken was decent, but nothing amazing. All in all a good meal; and while I'm sure you can find better Indian in London, this place is decent enough. read more

This is located near the Hilton Tower Bridge where we stayed. It looks cozy and sheik from the outside and when you enter it is. BUT if its crowded thy will take you down stairs. It was dark and empty until some loud guys came in. The price looks higher but OK for the restaurant BUT like many nicer Indian restaurants I have been to in England, the rice and the naan bread are separate. So a £9 meal is now £16....not cheap ($25). Service was not included as it normally is in Europe. The food was not authentic Indian in my mind as it used heavier cream, but it was good. We got Chicken Tikka Marsala (which is English and a great dish), Tandoor chicken and a curry dish.....all were good. There is allot if food competition in the area but if you sit upstairs and are looking for a good meal and want to spend the money worth a shot. This place had a bangladeshi chef. I think that might be why I wasn't into the food here. It was acidic and sweet - sweet like sugar was added. I didn't like it at all. The rest room was down a set of very steep stairs and wasn't the most beautiful sight I've ever seen. Someone in an earlier post mentioned the menu requiring that you order both naan and rice. Let me clarify here: it's a typo on the menu! The waitor kindly explained that you must order simply one or the other - otherwise it would make no earthly sense. In America, rice comes free with food orders so I'll admit this was strange to me. It was very dark inside this restaurant but pretty classy looking. We walked a pretty long way to get here so we were relieved to sit and eat pretty quickly. We got a chicken and onion dish (this was pretty good) and a paneer (soft cheese dish - this is one sugary sweet one). We were sort of disappointed because we even asked the waiter for recommendations and he suggested the gross paneer dish. If we lived in London we wouldn't return here. It made us a bit more homesick and didn't seem particularly friendly. Amazing food! We're visiting here from America and were drawn in while walking by. I've never had a better Indian meal! I absolutely loved the salmon korma, the mushroom rice was amazing, the spinach a nice compliment to the meal, and last but not least the pashwari was delectable! We went there on Friday evening while staying in the hotel next door, the restaurant looks and feels pleasant. Quite a lot of people, seems mostly from the offices around the area. The menu is rather extensive with dishes around India, one could even say too large since there's so much interesting on offer! We sampled three main dishes: chicken tikka masala, chicken curry and chicken jalfrezi with rice and naan bread. All were good if not superb as such, jalfrezi could have used some more "power" since it was documented to be hot & spicy... Level of service very good. All in all this one's certainly better than an average Indian. Would come happily back! read more

Shard is a new Indian restaurant attempting to bask in the reflected glory of the as yet unfinished sky spike of the same name an arrow shot away at London Bridge. The interior is birght and very modern Hmm.... The popadoms are served with a very nice spiced raita, but there the good news ends. The pulao rice was almost indistinguishable from plain basmati, the tarka dhal was thick and bland, the tomatoey blandness of the chicken jalfrezi was only lifted by the inclusion of crunchy fresh green chiles. The service was prompt and with a smile, but I'm afraid this is really an Indian restaurant for people that don't really want Indian food. In summary: great decor, dire dinner. read more

We were in South Bank looking for a good place to have dinner between daytime and nighttime visits to the Tower Bridge. We were looking for somewhere good enough to have a birthday dinner at the same time toddler friendly. Couldn't find anything suitable near Borough Market area. The market itself was empty in the evening. Finally we came across this restaurant on the way back to the bridge. The atmosphere is slightly formal, as is the case for dinner in most restaurants in London - I noticed. Overall, it was slightly expensive compared to similar Pakistani restaurants in US, but food was way more authentic. Everything tasted great. You are in safe hands with the guys from The Shad. When we got here it was virtually full, but they shuffled us into our seats pretty quickly, gave us a few tips about the level of heat in the curries, as I do like mine on the spicier side. Even though my dish was hot, it had a beautiful mix of flavours, no greasy top like you get in some inferior curry houses. I was surprised at the amount of staff as the place isn't massive, but was about half a dozen fellas working, all really friendly and full of character, had a good laugh with them. 5 minute walk from London Bridge station, so worth popping in for some food if you are waiting for a train, all reasonably priced considering where it is. read more

Had a great meal at The Shad (not to be confused with that Barad-dur-esque building 5 minutes walk away...) last week; it's a shame I don't live in the area anymore because I would love to go again. The decor is pretty lovely, quite red, very classy looking despite the reasonable prices. The food is all what you would expect from an Indian restaurant. Our group chose lots of dishes to share, though my favourites were the mixed grill and the lamb bhuna. The chicken tikka masala was also quite good, and I'm normally not a fan of it. The house wines were pretty tasty and the servers were diligent in refilling our glasses, though I wouldn't have minded refilling my glass myself! It was still a nice touch. Between 6 of us we had lots and lots of food and four bottles of wine and it came out to £30 each including service, which is more expensive than I usually like to pay for dinner but it was a special occasion so I can live with it! And it was mostly because we overdid it a bit on the food and we had so much wine. More restrained patrons will definitely be able to eat for less. There are definitely better Indian restaurants out there, but this area doesn't have much in terms of good food. Especially for the attentive service I'd definitely recommend stopping here for a meal. read more

Worst Indian food I have ever had! The restaurant is conveniently located across the street from an upscale Hilton and I'm sure, survives on many hotel patrons that are unsuspecting of its inferior cooking. My husband ordered tiki marsala and I ordered my favorite, butter chicken. My dinner was so spicy hat I had to turn it back. Butter chicken is typically not a hot dish. It has some chili but the crème/ghee typically makes it more of a mild dish. The restaurant did replace it with another butter chicken with no heat but it tasted terrible. And wax left uneaten. The nan, my husbands plain and my garlic was hard and reminded my of microwaved day old bread. My husband's chicken Marsala was ok but certainly not something to be proud of as a restaurant. The staff was friendly enough but nice staff doesn't make up for poorly cook food. Overall, a total disappointment. They took my entire off the bill but 1 tiki Marsala and / bans still came to a whopping $36. Not a good value for overall lousy food. read more

A good Indian restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere. I've eaten there several time and service is always friendly, although it can be a little slow when it gets busy. If you're not in a rush this shouldn't be a problem. Food is good with a full range of the usual Indian dishes with a number of specials. This Detroit girl was wowed by the service, believe it or not. On a week-long business trip, I visited the Shad because it was across the street from my hotel room and it seems curry is to London as Mediterranean food is to Detroit. The food was good. Not amazing. Not terrible (pretty much typical for UK food, I've found). But the service puts it over the top for me. I'd originally ordered "take away" but quickly changed my mind when I discovered how cozy and welcoming the place seemed. This threw a bit of a wrench into things and these Brits weren't quite sure what to do with me. But that soon got sorted out. After all was sorted, I enjoyed a nice meal and good service. I was even given a Preferred Customer card for my next visit, which affords me 10% off my bill. I'll take it! And though London is expensive in general (especially this downtown area) the meal was reasonable: curry chicken, rice and a vodka and OJ for about 14 pounds (or $20). read more

I wish I had written down more of what we had there, which makes me a very bad Yelper, but I really am a fan of this place! The service wasn't top notch for us, but the food was delicious. I had lamb rogan that was filled with tender chunks of meat and had a fantastic flavor, and though I don't recall what my husband had specifically it was well-cooked and wasn't light on the meat, either. Given the price range guide I'm seeing, this is a moderately priced place for lunch-- we spent about $40US but that seems to be about what you can expect around here. If I recall more details, I'll be sure to update, but I would definitely recommend the food here! I stopped by for a lite bite with my husband. We had a late lunch and weren't very hungry. He menu said you must order one main,nan AND rice per person otherwise you get charged 7.50pp. I asked prior to ordering that if it was ok if I order one main,one side and one naan since we weren't too hungry. We told him we're staying at a hotel and don't have a kitchen to take leftovers back. He was like no sorry it's or policy. I asked if they are byob because the only other place I've seen a policy like this is at byob restaurants. He said no it's not byob but it's just our policy. I asked to talk to the manager and he said he was the manager. He was really rude. On principal I decided not to eat and go to simply Indian around which has better staff and really good food. read more

Delicious. Had the KHALA LAMB BHUNA (from the menu description) Cubes of New Zealand lamb slowly cooked with fenugreek, lentils, green peppers and tomatoes. This dish is cooked slowly to bring out the smoky aroma. Agreed. Of course, I needed some lamb, and hey it was from NZ...where the best lamb on earth comes from. Dish was light, meat was superbly tender, green peppers and tomato base was devine. Plain naan was perfectly weighted, not too heavy, not too buttery, not too light. Rice, did the trick. Poppadom, with mango chutney, raita, spicy onion etc...lovely. First night in London and dining alone, so couldn't sample much - I expect with some local knowledge guiding me over the next two weeks, I may find something better, but this was very good. Service was great, easy, attentive yet relaxed. Caught the front of house mention that the curries are done without artificial colourings and additives, and I beleive it...very fresh. read more

Sorry Jason i would disagree with your comment about the the pilau rice, i am a big fan of Indian food and to be honest most restaurant put colouring on their rice and add flavoring that is not necessary as original Basmati rice has its own beautiful natural fragrance and if you ever had the privileged of tasting the dhall how they cook it in the homes of Asian family you will see that dhall is cooked thick with the special butter that they use. Anyway going back to my experience at the Shard restaurant was very pleasant and truly authentic, cant wait for our next office party as we are definitely going back there again.
