Visiting London from Chicago and of COURSE we had to try some of the town's famous East Indian-Pakistani cuisine, but friends' recommendations were all for high-end and/or chain places. So we did some research. Somewhere along the line we found Meraz written up as one of the 12 best Indian restaurants in England. Okay, so we trek over to the East End (pretty wild neighborhood that we enjoyed) for dinner at Meraz. My husband was disappointed not to find a particular dish on the menu, but the waiter didn't hesitate to offer to have the kitchen whip it up special for him. My husband also went a little wild ordering all sorts of appetizers and side dishes. Now I don't like to deal in hyperbole. A five star rating should be sufficient praise. But I'm going to go overboard just this once: BEST INDIAN FOOD I'VE EVER EATEN IN A RESTAURANT. EVER. I've eaten in Indian restaurants at home in Chicago, in L.A., New York, St.Louis, Atlanta, San Francisco, etc., etc. etc. Many have been good, but none approached this. We ate every scrap of all the food we ordered, and only because we had a tight timeline and a busy itinerary for our brief visit to London did we not go back for at least a second meal. read more

Went here tonight for dinner and it was all very good! Got the mix platter for the appetizer, all was good but the chicken tikka was the favorite. Also ordered chicken curry, chicken korma, lamb tikka biryani, garlic naan...all very tasty. Mango lassi was great too, one of the best I've had. My husband, I and our two sons thought it was very good. Our 11 year old is pretty picky and gave it a 10/10. The service was great too! Highly recommend. read more

I was excited to try some Indian food while in London and this place didn't disappoint! I knew I wanted to have lamb and the waiter recommended one of their spicier dishes. I would definitely recommend ordering some sort of bread on the side. The lamb was very flavorful and I loved scooping the gravy up onto the bread. The portion sizes aren't too big, so I'd advise coming with a few people and splitting some dishes. read more

How do we give this place more than 5 stars? We ended up here thanks to Yelp and as others have said it's a welcome reprieve away from the clamor of Brick Lane vendors. We started with Sami Lamb appetizer, chopped up lamb with onions that tasted very good. We then shared Chicken Achari, King Prawn biryani (came with veggie side), Saag paneer (think it said Sog Ponir on menu, not sure what correct spelling is) and garlic naan. Every dish was SO good and flavorful. We had a sudden epiphany that we have been going to too many mediocre Indian lunch buffets back home and that THIS is what real, good food of this cuisine (Indian, Bangladeshi) should taste like. Tasty, quiet Indian restaurant just off the bustle of Brick Lane. The interior is crisp, clean, and modern, and the service was friendly and prompt. We were there in that odd hour between lunch and dinner and so were the only people in the place, and I'm fairly certain that the man who served us was also the chef/cook. Not being wildly hungry and not wanting to lug around leftovers, we ordered one chicken tikka masala along with a garlic naan and a pilau rice. It was the perfect amount of food for two people and we cleaned our plates. The masala was a little on the sweet side and could have been a little spicier, but overall it was a great meal. We had an amazing dinner here last night. The owner/manager was very pleasant and friendly. We did not have a booking but he was able to accommodate us. He wasn't bashful about helping us order and making some recommendations. The food was hot, fresh, and on point. Our first meal in London set the bar REALLY high for the rest of the trip! We had curries, korma, naan, biriyani, kebab, samosas, and everything was absolutely delicious. The flavors were intense, with a varied level of spice between the dishes. The naan was so soft and wonderful. Although everything was very good, we all agreed that our favorite dish was the chicken korma. I could have eaten that all day! The service was spectacular, very friendly and offering great suggestions for us to try. Came here based on reviews from yelp. Let me just start off by saying I'm glad I followed the ratings because the food here was bomb. Went with the Sami lamb appetizer. My husband had the tandoori prawns and I had the prawn tikka. Both were very flavorful with the perfect amount of spicy. What I love about food in London is the portions are perfect (as opposed to Everything-is-bigger-in-texas portions). This restaurant is hard to find without word of mouth. It's nestled amongst tons of other restaurants that serve similar food. But it's clean (I think they recently renovated). read more

On a rainy Tuesday the touting is not quite as extreme along Brick Lane, but I dragged my friend up the road to my secret Indian cafe ... my heart sank when I didn't recognise the old Meraz. Luckily the decor is the only thing that changed. Service is still just as friendly and the food just as tasty. We opted for the daily special which today was a medium-hot chicken dish, or so they said - it was very spicy and delicious! Meraz looks less than a greasy spoon and more like a trendy soup kitchen now, they know their hipster clientele and recharging stations are added to every table - nice touch! We were visiting London and were walking through its famous Brick Lane searching for amazing Indian food. I was surprised to find it touristy and crowded. It reminded me of Little Italy in NYC, hawkers outside restaurants hollering at you to come in and eat at their restaurant. I didn't like it. I think... if your food is good, you shouldn't have to beg people to come inside. So I got on Yelp and found this amazing, humble, little place off Brick Lane that was just perfection! We wanted a special experience. We wanted to eat curries that we don't usually get in Los Angeles or NYC. The owner spent time helping us order the perfect meal, and advised us to eat the curries separately so as to really enjoy the taste and depth of each sauce. We melted. MELTED. 100% completely different curries from anything we'd had before. We got a perfect culinary tour of India, and we truly appreciated the time they took to guide us through. read more

They might have put sugar instead of salt in the chicken Tikka Masala. Either that or they meant for it to be sweeter than most cake. I've had the dish many times, and it had never tasted so strange. The other thing I ordered was a tomato curry (buhni?) It was good but not fantastic. The naan we ordered was okay, and be warned that you have to pay for water. I was craving Indian and London is known for having excellent options, so when we set out for dinner, we let my temporary Londoner niece lead the charge. We made our way to 'Little India' and were bombarded with amazing smells of curry. We ordered some garlic naan and the chicken tikka to start. We must have been hungry because it all disappeared quickly. The naan had just the right amount of garlic for this group. I know we shared our entrees, but can't remember exactly what we ordered. I know we had at least one order of Chicken Korma floating around and my husband ordered something with lamb. Super Indian restaurant, relatively cheap compared to other choices. Bear in mind that here alcool is not served, so bring your own beers or wine bottles. Great choices of curry and tandoori plates, personally I had a lamb tikka masala and some tandoori starters. In the end of the day, all of us were more than happy: good meal and good price. It was hard to choose where to go on Brick Lane with all the many curry options and hosts beckoning and reviews blurring. I'm so glad we chose this place. A little off Brick Lane made it nice and quiet, not quite as in-your-face. And the food-the food! It was all really excellent. The curry and pakora were both really great. Tip: get something with their unique special red sauce on it. My wife got a lamb "snack" with it and it was superb. The server was also really great in a nice, distant joking kind of way. I'm not sure it's the headlining curry place on Brick Lane, but I'd be surprised if the food was any better elsewhere. read more

Traveling from San Francisco, California and everyone kept mentioning all these fancy Indian restaurants, however I just wanted some authentic good Indian food, don't care about the fancy stuff. This is a hidden gem in the bustling Brick Lane area of London. My husband and I decided to dine here -- we were attracted by the fact that no one trying to convince us to come in, tourist groups were not dining there, and that it looked clean, humble, and had a delicious menu. We clearly made the right choice! The owner, Shamim, was personable, passionate about his business, and helpful in guiding us through the menu, making wonderful recommendations. Very clean interior (also had USB charging outlets!?), the service was super and food was really good too. I was so happy to find this place after walking down Brick Lane and had so many restaurants offering special offers with 20% off on a meal with a free drink. This place was on a quiet street, no one offering anything but good food and service. I had paneer masala, the owner said it was a baby food - no offense, I laughed and agreed!, thought it was too sweet compared to what I had in other places, but it was good. My friend had spicy prawn curry, and THAT was really good. Their chickpea rice was good too. The owner was more proud of the prawn curry, wish I asked for his recommendations! The only downside was the owner's friends who wanted to keep talking to us while my friend and I were eating. They were friendly, but too talkative.
