A smaller place with maybe 10 tables in a seedier section of Spitalsfield. The chicken tikka masala was not what I'm used to in the states - it was quite sweet. The lamb and vegetable samosas were very good, as was the naan and the biryani. They don't offer tap water, forcing you to purchase Evian bottled water which always gets my goat. Very good Indian place just a few meters of distance from Brick Lane. The restaurant is small, clean and nice. The food is really good. It takes quite a while to get your food but the reason is that everything is cooked on the spot therefore the food you get it really worth the time you wait. Just off Brick Lane, this little café serves home cooked Indian food. The menu is awesome and has authentic options. The waiter (I think the owner) was super friendly and asked how we found out about his place - Yelp of course!! We ordered tandoori king prawns (you get 4 big meaty prawns on a sizzling skillet), and sides of chana massala and sag aloo both of which were amazing. We also had a portion of pakoras (5) and 2 poppadoms to start. Go for a mango lassi to drink...the sensation of the sweet mango and spice from the dishes is always so good! Overall the food was amazing and that was enough for two people. The only comment I'd make is that the food was really salty...we were dying of thirst for the rest of the night. Described by the owner, Sam, as 'one pot comfort food, like we make at home,' Meraz Cafe is exactly the type of place I'd go when I'm missing my grandma's cooking. Though it's located a stone's throw away from my flat (and indeed, so close that I saw my landlord there when I went in for a meeting), I'd never before seen or heard of this delightful haven of Bengali cookery. When there, I sampled the chana masala, puri, and a cabbage and veg curry. The chana and curry were spiced similarly (with ginger, garlic, and mustard seeds - very much like home!), with a tomato and oil based sauce of medium-thickness, and no cream (!). The cabbage curry had evenly julienned slivers of carrot and onion, which allowed for a very nice distribution of different flavours and textures. Me likey. The only thing that I would have changed was that there was quite a bit of oil in the dish that pooled at the top (I suppose it was an oil-based sauce...), although that's not too different from the food we eat at home, as well. The puri was light and fluffy, but also a bit oily (puri is generally like that, which is why it's not my favourite bready thing to eat, and I always prefer chapati or naan). Lastly, the prices at Meraz Cafe are extremely fair, and even I can afford it on my student budget -- at £2-3.50 for a veggie curry dish, and anywhere from £0.75-2 for a vessel/carb (whether puri, naan, or rice), I have a feeling I will be back here over, and over, and over again. I told Sam he'd have to kick me out for coming to eat here too much, and I plan on making good on that promise. read more

I must admit that I'm not exactly a connoisseur of Indian cuisine, but that being said I really love coming here. The guys are great, and the food was delicious. Even though I have a pretty low tolerance for spicy foods, I managed to somehow clean my plate! The definitely pre-cook everything and just reheat, but I feel like most of their customers aren't coming here for fine dining. My favorite part of Meraz though? The prices are so affordable. The Brick Lane district had been recommended to us by friends so we ended up wandering around a bit but made a turn down a side street when we saw the reviews for for Meraz. We had a delicious meal and were treated very well by the restaurant staff. Each dish was full of flavor and aroma. The food is lovely, but the staff were incredibly rude. As soon as we came in for our reservation, he asked if the other people were coming because he wanted to split up the tables. As people arrived he kept asking if more were coming. Not only did the staff stare at us the entire time, they ignored my requests for two starters, often ignored the women at the table and generally didn't even attempt to serve us. We spent nearly £100 on food and they were continually staring or ignoring us. As someone who works in the industry I find this appalling. The way the staff act has a huge impact on experience; there was one friendly waiter who I sadly didn't get the name of. I was visiting from NY and had to give Brick Lane Indian food a try... and boy, this place did not disappoint! Ordered the Chicken Tikka masala, Lamb Curry, Roti, and Tandoori jumbo Prawns. Everything was great... Prawns were a good size and cooked to perfection. The sauce of the Masala was incredibly flavorful and probably the best I've ever had. I am not a big fan of Masalas in NY since it tends to be overly buttery and lacking, but the Masala here packed a very flavorful profile punch. It had a nice hint of sweetness while not being overly spicy. You'll see all of the neighboring restaurants in this area displaying their gimmicky banners and having their Waiters harass you to solicit business, but not this place. It seemed to have a solid reputation and was full of locals/regulars during Thursday afternoon lunchtime. Will definitely be back the next time I am in town! read more

Service was friendly, ambiance was clean and modern, and they have wall chargers. But the chicken korma was way too sugary and the chickpeas were incredibly salty. The waiter offered papadum like it was free, whisked it away before we were done eating it leaving us with flakes of papadum in our hands, and then charged 3 pounds for it. Come here for dinner if you're looking for a great meal! I made a reservation through Google and we were seated immediately when we arrived. The ambience is casual and the place is small. It is BYOB and there are no fees for bringing in wine. We ordered a selection of appetizers which were all excellent. I would highly recommend the lamb appetizer at the top of the menu! For entrees the saag paneer was good but not excellent but we also had a lamb dish recommended by our server which was amazing. This restaurant was on my to-do list for a while to stop by for lunch sometime while in the Brick Lane area. I finally stopped by for lunch with not too large of an appetite so I ordered the chicken curry with pilau rice. Seeing as I was the only person in the restaurant, the service was good as far as ordering my food goes. Upon placing my order, the first thing I noticed was seeing the pilau rice go straight into the microwave. My immediate thought was, alright, understandable as business is quite slow right now, but I could already sense it wouldn't be anything in the way of exquisite. Both dishes came out, and in comparison to several other surrounding curry houses the chicken curry dish was fairly small (approximately 6-7 pieces of chicken). Overall, the taste was very mediocre; nothing to write home about. I'd recommend spending your money elsewhere for a quality tasting dish. read more

A great cafe/resto. No frills but the food is fabulous. Suggestion for two: share a Karai Gost main with sides of runner beans, red dhal, spiced new potato and one of the breads. You can always add more dishes as you go if you're hungry, greedy or just in love with the food. If you want something different but great try the sundried spinach side dish. Excellent food, very nice staff. All the food I had seemed very fresh and flavorful. I liked the naan bread a lot here. Also the portions were very fine. I enjoyed the atmosphere and watching the chef add the different sauces they had for different types of flavors. I lived in London for a couple of years, but moved away several years ago. Of all the places I missed, Meraz is what I really craved when coming back for a short business trip. Whilst living and working in London, this was a frequent go-to place for take out or a sit down meal. The kebabs are amazing - the sauce is the right amount of sweet, savory, and heat. I think I have eaten more than my weight in kebabs, particularly the ones cooked in oil. The currys, meats, biryani - everything is just what I remembered and satisfied a long held craving. That on top of the warm, welcoming staff and owner make this the type of place you will want to come back to again and again. I debated reviewing this place because I don't want it to get crowded. This is the best Indian on brick lane - well it's actually a block off brick lane but close enough. I give this place 5 stars for food, service, and cleanliness. The place is clean and small. The host/server/owner(?) welcomed us, but not in a desperate way, unlike the hundred other Indian restaurants one street over. He seated us and made sure we were comfortable. We asked what he recommended and he thoughtfully asked what types of flavors we liked. Then he recommended a chicken special and biryani with king prawns. I've had homemade Indian food many times and this was even better. The dishes were rich in flavor, but not overwhelming or heavy. The rice and naan were perfect as well. The sauce they served with the biryani was also delicious. The host/server/owner was friendly and had a conversation with us asking where we were visiting from etc. We loved it so much, we went back the next day. They don't serve alcoholic beverages, but we saw people bring their own, which they're totally cool with. We're definitely going back the next time we're in London. read more
