Stopped in for some quick veggie food. It was quite good. The guy behind the counter was calm and friendly. I left my phone there by mistake. My entire travel plans flashed before my eyes as I rifled through my tiny hotel room, first slowly and then very quickly realizing it wasn't with me anymore. I sprinted blocks back through the muggy London heat (it's 2022 - the new world, muggy and hot northern europe (?)) arriving sweating the minute they were closing. My impression is, Masala is a popular take out venue. The food is ready made, and only in need of heating. The place was very casual and typically where you go for food, not anything else. Nestled in the Earl's Court area of London, Masala is a perfect place for Indian food. I would say this is Indian home-cooking at its best. The service is very good. You can order at the counter for take out or be seated in the restaurant. The lady working the counter was really friendly. I waited for some customers before me, and when it was my turn, she answered all of my questions. I tried a number of items including chana masala, chicken tikka masala, onion bhaji and garlic naan. The food appeared to be hot in the case, but it was heated even more in the microwave to take out. I was provided with utensils as well, which was very helpful because I was taking the food back to my hotel room. The taste of everything was spectacular. Each dish had its distinct flavors, and the basmati rice it came with was cooked well. I liked the garlic naan, and the pieces were huge. I couldn't eat it all in one sitting, and I had left-overs for breakfast. The price was good too. I spent less than 20 pounds for my meal which could have fed at least two people - probably more. I highly recommend this place, and I would probably come back myself if I was ever in the area. I was happy to find such a welcoming place that really caters to the locals and doesn't feel pretension. This is where locals eat, and where you should go on your next stay in the area! read more

I ordered a curry based dish with rice. The dish was acceptable. Masala is one of those pre-prepared restaurant/take-aways that reheats food in a microwave. As a person who values freshness and made-to-order meals, this is a rather disappointing practice that has been embarrassed by Indian and Middle Eastern restaurants throughout London. Great food and service. We ordered a variety of items including the chicken tikki masala which was just perfect amount of spice. Rice was great. Chicken rice dish was excellent. We booked a hotel not far from Earl's Court and wanted a late afternoon meal upon arrival. We stopped by here, and returned two more times before our trip was over. We dined in, though a majority of customers seemed to come for take-out. We tried a variety of things. The lassi were delicious - and freshly made, as is the chai. The naan and chapatis were great. We particularly enjoyed the garlic naan. The reheated element of the food did not take away from its flavour or consistency. The food is rich and a little heavy on the stomach - as curry often is. It didn't help we ordered too many things and overate... repeatedly. I wouldn't recommend if you're looking for refined food (we have another favourite for that), but if you're looking for a decent price, delicious food, and amiable service -- I couldn't recommend this place enough. read more

Actually went to the restaurant based on the Yelp reviews and then watched as they scooped cold food onto plates and then proceeded to microwave the food in the four microwaves behind the counter. Walking up and down Brick Lane is always an experience. Apparently the men standing outside the restaurants are all old friends who want to buy me drinks if I come inside their restaurants! You have to take their enticing offers with a grain of salt- only once was the promise of discounts honored for me when I ventured over to Brick Lane. And that would be here, in Masala. I don't have a favorite eatery here simply because there are so many to choose from and I want to try as many out as I can first. However, Masala is creeping up close to having the title. The food was absolutely delicious and amazingly didn't send me straight to the bathroom downstairs (usually a sign of a delicious curry). From what I remember, the staff was much more attentive and pleasant than I was expecting. I think our server may have even made a joke! The upstairs area isn't as decorative as the restaurant below, with people seated close together in an almost cafeteria style setting. It's all right, though. It's a nice little cove and might be where where the discounters are shuffled to. I'll gladly sit up here again if my bill comes out to what it did the night I went. We were given a decent, free bottle of wine and shockingly, a slight reduction in price on our food, too. We walked out of there tipsy, curried up, and happy we had an extra 20 quid in our pockets we weren't expecting to have. Okay. Now I want curry.... Got take out from here while staying at hotel nearby. The dining space was quite basic. Got the feeling that it was more of a takeout place. Chicken tikka masala and lamb korma was quite good as was the aubergine dish. I forget what it is called. All the food is basically pre-prepared and they nuke it for you right there. Because of this the naan and the samosa were also pre-made and cold. (The blatant microwave on the counter was a shocker. You don't normally see that in the U.S. They hide it in the back and pretend that your food was freshly made) All in all it was fine since curry and rice reheat well. Curries were very nice. Portions were decent. If I had a oven to reheat it properly, I might even order the samosa again. I would go back. read more

As stated in another review, the food was microwaved for us when we ordered it. The restaurant was very small and cozy, but obviously popular (unlike the other Indian restaurant across the street). As a big fan of Mughal cuisine my mother told me that London was the place to experience it. This place was a little different that most Indian places I've been to in the States. The dishes are prepared and presented in a case near the entrance. We received menus, ordered and our items were scooped up and warmed in a microwave. The naan was made to order in the kitchen and brought to us. They seem to do quite a brisk business from walk in take-away traffic. Everything was satisfactory here and on met my expectations based on the Indian cuisine that I have grown to love at my home in central Iowa. In 2004, I spent a summer in India. We used to get samosas and a coke on the way home from English class. They were fragrant and spicy. We would cry through the chilis and scream about how good they were all the way home. I only got a samosa here, but it was just like those. I won't say I didn't enjoy my dinner but I do have some comments which made me take off stars from my review. First the service felt rushed when the lady took our order, she didn't even let me finish and left. After that we finally got her to come back so we could order drinks. Our pot of tea never arrived, and we had to remind her of our drinks. Our drinks arrived when we had already started eating. Also don't expect food that comes fresh out of the kitchen, it is microwaved before it's served to you, because it's sitting in a display. "Wonderful Vegetarian/Vegan Dishes Here!" Fantastic vegan/vegetarian Indian food! Extremely flavorful and spicy, we ate here three times during our stay in London, and we would have gone back more if we had stayed longer. All the vegetarian dishes are on one side of the case so it was easy to order just by pointing at what you wanted. I tried a different dish every time I went and each one was better than the last. The owner was very friendly and gave us good advice on other places to eat inside and outside of Earl's Court. There's a similarly named Indian chain called Masala Zone and he suggested we try there, kind of hinting that once we did, we'd be back at his place. Wink, wink. Had some chicken tiki masala, yellow curry, basmati rice, garlic naan and a drink to share all for two people under 20 pounds. Not bad at all came out to less that $10usd per person! Great family run restaurant. Loads of choices and Grandma REALLY makes the food! I don't think you can get any closer to homemade than that! Don't let the fact that there are microwaves lining the back wall behind the counter throw you. The dishes are chilled to keep them fresh. Then heated for you as you order them. That's safer than keeping them in a water bath all day. That's when you can get into problems. We had the Chicken Tikka Masala (Butter Chicken), Garlic Naan, Spinach with Chicken, plain basmati and the owner gave us a sample of just-out-of-the-fryer veggie pakora. Everything was delish! Good Indian cuisine in Earl's Court, just a couple hundred feet away from the tube stop. Used to come here at least once a week when I was living in South Kensington. Can't say anything bad about any of the dishes I've had here. The only thing that I found strange, as an American, was their use of the microwave out in the open, to heat food. I later saw this at another restaurant I went to near by as well. Regardless the curry is still very good and worth a go. Also try their Masala tea. read more

The lady at the counter was super nice and very helpful but everything in the display is cold until it is put into a serving dish and microwaved prior to coming to your table. I was searching and here I found a gem, right down the street from my hotel. Don't be put off by the fact that your take out order comes in microwavable tupperware (I'm American). Don't be taken aback by the fact that they may ask you if you want it warmed up. Eat in or take away, this stuff is good. This stuff is decent Indian food and it redeemed my faith in London cuisine. After two days of misses, this was a hit. I had the yellow curry chicken (called something else, but that's what I call it at home), these mashed lentils, and an eggplant and potato dish (oooooh it's so good). The test of Indian food is the oil & spice level yet keeping the taste authentic.
