First time here. Food was good! Service was on point. Staffs were very friendly and respectful. Braised eggplant - my fav dish so far! The skin was crisp and the sauce was flavorful. We decided to expand our circle for trying different Chinese restaurants and ended up in NW Mesa. Friday evening, restaurant was busy and live music. The restaurant was very clean, as evidenced by the numerous health department "A" signs on the window. I always check those out when entering a restaurant. The inside of the restaurant is kind of old school. Definitely a throw back vibe as far as atmosphere goes. Super friendly service, there were a few slight language barriers which led to a couple of ordering errors. They did a great job keeping water and soda glasses full. Now the food part of the review. We had a party of 8, so we tried a good sampling of their menu. Let me just say, this is an authentic Chinese restaurant.the menu is huge and there are some extremely unique offerings. The food was flavorful and the portions where appropriate. The prices were in line with other Chinese restaurants I have been to. The quality of the chicken was a little lower than I prefer. I did come across gristle on a few bites. Glad we tried a new place, but not sure it will be part of the regular rotation. read more

Been craving roujiamo (Chinese shredded meat on bread this is like a dense English muffin) and this place offers 3 types. I opted to try their cumin lamb & spicy pork ones along with an order of spicy cumin lamb biang biang noodles. I went in right when they opened for dinner service and they already had a few table come in and be seated. This place is a fairy good sized (medium to large) restaurant and beautifully decorated with a few large tables, several table that seat up to six folks, several booths & 2 person tables. The staff was friendly and professional. The took my order and it only took about 20-30 minutes to be packed and ready to go. Everything was seasoned well, cooked right and tasted great. read more

It's been a while since I last visited so I tried some different dishes. The good: The biang biang noodles were pretty good and the meat was tender. The dried eggplant also had a nice savory and spicy flavor. The bad: The Shaanxi style burger stewed pork was extremely dry and tasteless without any sauce or chili oil. It was 6.99 which could have paid for an actual gourmet burger. Lastly, I noticed later that I was charged for the complimentary fortune cookies (listed as "crispy bread") after the meal. The taste of the food here is indisputable but the customer service, price and portion could be better. We come here often so this is a collective review of those experiences. The prices here are outrageous. I got a hot and sour soup and it was almost $9! On top of that, they charge the credit card surcharge of 2.5% to their customers, so that all their transactions are free for themselves. And on top of that, this soup took almost twenty minutes to make. Despite all this, I give a solid three stars because the soup was hearty and delicious. It was also spicy, which is rare to find, so they are true to their word there. I do wish it had shiitake mushrooms, as that is a key ingredient and I didn't taste any. Great place to come with the Fam. For a couple days a week, a girl comes play the traditional Chinese violin for the crowd. We had the Mapo Tofu, braised chicken with noodles, cumin lamb, seaweed egg soup and hand wrapped cabbage. Highly recommend the soup and cabbage for any meal. Located in Mesa, Shaanxi Garden (家在陕西) specializes in northwestern Chinese cuisine. If you frequent Panda Express, most of the options available here will be unfamiliar. If you are accustomed to authentic Chinese food, you will be delighted by the menu. The number of Shaanxi specialties on offer here is something I doubt you could find elsewhere in the Valley. Xi'an, situated in the northwestern region of China, was the first capital of China and the starting point of the Silk Road, however, the region also boasts a unique cuisine that combines Chinese and Middle Eastern flavors. Historically, people of this area tend to enjoy noodles and bread more than rice, so noodle and bread options abound. Flavors tend to be different as well with cumin emphasized as well as chili and Sichuan peppercorns. Shaanxi Garden represents these dishes and flavors well, although they also offer hot pot and a few other dishes from other Chinese regions. I loved the coziness of the dining room. If you've ever been to China, you will get the same vibe when you walk in here. It's cutely decorated and conveys warmth. The Terracotta soldiers that greet you when you step inside say it all. They were recently featured on Mark Tarbell's PBS program "Check, Please!" which meant that when I visited on a recent Friday around 5 p.m. they were already hopping. Portion sizes are large. One of my go-to orders with restaurants like this is spicy green beans (干煸四季豆). Here, it is well executed. Not overly salty as it can be and spicy without it being overpowering. Likewise, the lamb skewers were the best I have found in the Valley. Surprisingly, the ròujiāmó, perhaps the best-known of all Shaanxi foods wasn't great. It looked uninspired and tasted average at best. If it was anyone's first experience of trying one, they would not order it again. To be fair, I will go back and try more of the menu. Overall, I would give it 3 out of 5 for food as there is room for improvement. Unfortunately, booze options are limited. They do offer bottled beers, including Qingdao and a range of sake (from their online presence it seems at one point they had cocktails but those days are sadly over). One thing I really appreciated was the warmth of the staff. Everyone seemed genuinely pleased you were there, service was fast, and it was a place where you could linger for a while. Likes its name, Shaanxi Garden serves food in the region of Shaanxi in China. Lamb dishes, biangbiang noodles are some of the specialty in this region. Although Shaanxi Garden has a very modern decor, the food is very authentic. What's more, they have a live person playing Guzhen(Chinese Harp) every Friday and Saturday. Taichi Squirrel Shaped Fish with Two Flavors- fried fish served two ways - sweet and sour sauce and cumin, salt and pepper. Hands down the best fish dish I've had this year. Both flavors were phenomenal! The sweet and sour sauce was perfectly sweet and tangy with pieces of fruits throughout. The cumin, salt and pepper side was perfectly fried and the seasoning was so tasty that you wouldn't want to stop eating. The portion was huge and such a steal at only $18.99. BBQ Squid - the squid had good texture and the seasoning was nice. Biangbiang Noodles - the noodles were thick and had a nice bouncy texture. We ordered mild. It'd have been even more tasty if we ordered spicy. Be sure to check this place out with great authenticity, quality and portion with very reasonable prices. read more

Whether here for a quick lunch of their handmade noodles or a family-style dinner with their prolific menu, I've stopped by Shaanxi Garden a few times now and am a fan. First off, you'd be remiss if you did not try their wide handmade noodles, dressed with the intense, savory cumin flavor typical to the Xi'an province. I'm used to finding the more common and well-loved Sichuan-style dishes in the U.S., so I was happy to find a greater variety of dishes here. The noodles themselves are thick, a little chewy in the best way, and flavorfully coated with the spicy cumin sauce. My favorite is the cumin lamb! The menu can be a little confusing - I've often gotten the P07 "Stir Fried Noodles" and P04 "Oil Seared Noodles" mixed up. I prefer the P04, which comes in a deep dish with potato and peppers, but both are good. In truth, I usually only come in for their noodles, and I've only had their other dishes on one occasion, when I brought my dad. He was delighted with the menu (*cue the asian dad forward head tilt, glasses pushed down*) like a kid in a candy shop and ultimately decided on the Dongpo Pork Knuckle. Apparently there are some historic parables about the dish, but I honestly do not remember as I was too busy stuffing my face. Anyways, 10/10. They also have a great ambience with a lot of thought put in (they have cultural guzheng nights), but the food is the real star. Highly recommend. We had seen a glowing review of Shaanxi Garden on PBS, so we really looked forward to trying it out. We walked in on a Saturday afternoon when about ten tables were occupied. The place did not feel absolutely clean. The table was sticky. The menu is large, printed on both sides with many choices in each of several categories. Service was not fast, and our food did not come out at the same time. There was a full 5 minutes between mine and hers showing up. Her orange chicken with white rice was tasty-meaty, crunchy. My hot oil noodles with vegetables was cooled on the top by the time her food arrived and we started eating. It was good but not great. The noodles, highly praised on tv, were just noodles. And the dish was way too salty. We don't think we'll return. read more

Our server didn't even clean off the table before telling us twice to sit down. If you like authentic Chinese food and were wondering about trying this place, please DO! You see the $$ signs and you start to question it, then you glance the menu and notice most dishes are $10 and up. To me, the food is moderately priced. I hate how Chinese food gets the stigma that it is cheap and should not cost much. WELL, you get what you pay for. A lot of other Asian cuisines are on average on the "high end", but people don't have a problem paying for those other types of food. This place is a little more on the upscale side, but I think the quality and flavor is there. Don't expect huge portions for cheap. However, we actually ordered 3 dishes and it was enough for 4-5 people and it only came out to about $45. How much would it cost to feed 5 people at "other" restaurants? N1 Biangbiang noodles were just right. It was light on the saltiness but to me that was nice because I don't need all my dishes soaked in sodium. It wasn't greasy and the fresh homemade noodles won me over. S4 Shannxi Delighted Lamb Soup was delicious. The broth is so clean and savory. And the rice noodles with the tender lamb slices and bok choy was so good in the soup. I recommend the '4 Bowls of happiness'. It's $18 but you get 4 different dishes and could easily feed 2 people with a nice pot of fresh steamed rice. So many atypical dishes brings a fresh taste to Chinese food in AZ. Wanted to try this new place with the family since we all love spicier food. Ended up ordering the green beans, stir fried pig intestines and a noodle dish. I really loved the green beans as it has a good combination of spiciness and garlic flavor. The hand pulled noodles were good texture wise but really lacked flavor and the inconvenient part was the strands were really long...Lastly, the stir fry intestines which is usually my favorite anywhere we're again cooked well and cleaned well. They were REALLY spicy but still wasn't overly for me. However, they felt under seasoned completely. My experience was honestly so unnerving and disappointing. This was my second time coming in and my friend and I received terrible and concerning service. If you're a person of color please steer far away from this place. We came in, a few guests were already eating and we were ignored until we asked if we needed to seat ourselves. The waiter, in question who I attached below just motioned for us to sit with his hands and didn't acknowledge us verbally. After about ten minutes of waiting he quite literally threw the menus on our table again with no words and walked off. After that, my friend and I were waiting for 30 minutes while multiple tables came in and were sat and served at their table. At this point I was genuinely confused and when my friend attempted to tell him that we were ready to put in orders for food and drinks he literally would not speak to us and only motioned for us to come to the counter to order. The whole situation was very odd. We saw him serve multiple people at their tables but he was overtly refusing to come to ours after we had already been sitting for around 40 minutes at this point. I understand business do have the right to refuse service- but he would not even talk to us like we were human beings let alone paying customers. This is only my second time in however it will genuinely be my last. Not servicing people of color in 2024 is just absolutely insane. Shaanxi Garden is a Chinese Restaurant located in Mesa that specializes in offering Chinese Dishes from the desert region of China.These dishes are large and are meant for sharing. We ordered one specialty dish and one vegetable dish and that is too much food for two people so we brought the leftovers home. Not all but some dishes that are offered spicy may contain Sichuan Peppercorns but these dishes don't run so stingingly hot and fiery as Szechuan Dishes. This restaurant also offers some Americanized Chinese Dishes. It's an attractive restaurant with lots of stained wood and Asian motifs. I particularly liked the unique dish ware that the tables are set with that looks like stone but isn't. We tried the #22 Braised Chicken with Noodle. I believe that this is the well known Chinese Dish called "Big Plate Chicken" in China (Da Pan Ji , Dapanji). This is basically a somewhat spicy Chicken on bone stew with potatoes, bell pepper, (jalapeños here),star anise, sweet chestnuts and this really LONG WIDE delicate noodle. I thought it was very good. The chicken was developed with flavors. I liked when I hit a chestnut because it was a sweet note that added another pop to the dish. I've had this dish before at another Chinese Restaurant and there they used Sichuan peppercorns and hot chili for the heat instead of Jalapeños. I do prefer the Sichuan Peppercorns and hot chilies to the use of Jalapeños. For me the dish is more exciting with more dimension with Sichuan Peppercorns but then on the other hand I never had this dish in China so I don't know how they serve it there. We also shared the A Choy in Garlic Sauce. WOW this might have been the very BEST A Choy I ever had! It was so fresh and so tender crisp. I never had A Choy that was this great before. Shaanxi Garden is my favorite restaurant IN THE WORLD. I've lived in NYC, Spain, and I'm from Miami and I've never tasted anything like it. You simply MUST try it. My boyfriend and I have brought several people and they have all agreed. I'm vegetarian and I always order the seared noodles with veggies (P01) (I think it's the only vegetarian noodle) and a vegetable, or two if I'm balling. The hand-wrapped cabbage (L02) is transcendent somehow. I love cabbage but would never think it would be the star of the show, but it just is. The dried green beans (L05) are my other fav. My boyfriend is obsessed with the walnut shrimp (J05). I haven't even tried many dishes (I come for special occasions to keep the romance alive) but the fact that it's my favorite restaurant still - as a vegetarian and having tried limited dishes - is really telling. read more
